Finite difference schemes for the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation

We propose a new finite difference scheme for the degenerate parabolic equation \[ \partial_t u - \mbox{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u) =f, \quad p\geq 2. \] Under the assumption that the data is Hölder continuous, we establish the convergence of the explicit-in-time scheme for the Cauchy problem provided a suitable stability type CFL-condition. An important advantage of our approach, is that the CFL-condition makes use of the regularity provided by the scheme to reduce the computational cost. In particular, for Lipschitz data, the CFL-condition is of the same order as for the heat equation and independent of $p$.

On asymptotic expansions for the fractional infinity Laplacian

We propose two asymptotic expansions of two interrelated integral-type averages, in the context of the fractional $\infty$-Laplacian $Δ_\infty^s$ for $s\in (\frac{1}{2},1)$. This operator has been introduced and first studied in [Bjorland, C., Caffarelli, L. and Figalli, A., \textsl{Nonlocal Tug-of-War and the inifnity fractional Laplacian}, Comm. Pure Appl. Math., \textbf{65}, pp. 337--380, (2012)]. Our expansions are parametrised by the radius of the removed singularity $ε$, and allow for the identification of $Δ_\infty^sϕ(x)$ as the $ε^{2s}$-order coefficient of the deviation of the $ε$-average from the value $ϕ(x)$, in the limit $ε\to 0+$. The averages are well posed for functions $ϕ$ that are only Borel regular and bounded.

The one-phase fractional Stefan problem

We study the existence and properties of solutions and free boundaries of the one-phase Stefan problem with fractional diffusion posed in $\mathbb{R}^N$. In terms of the enthalpy $h(x,t)$, the evolution equation reads $\partial_t h+(-Δ)^sΦ(h) =0$, while the temperature is defined as $u:=Φ(h):=\max\{h-L,0\}$ for some constant $L>0$ called the latent heat, and $(-Δ)^s$ stands for the fractional Laplacian with exponent $s\in(0,1)$. We prove the existence of a continuous and bounded selfsimilar solution of the form $h(x,t)=H(x\,t^{-1/(2s)})$ which exhibits a free boundary at the change-of-phase level $h(x,t)=L$. This level is located at the line (called the free boundary) $x(t)=ξ_0 t^{1/(2s)}$ for some $ξ_0>0$. The construction is done in 1D, and its extension to $N$-dimensional space is shown. We also provide well-posedness and basic properties of very weak solutions for general bounded data $h_0$ in several dimensions. The temperatures $u$ of these solutions are continuous functions that have finite speed of propagation, with possible free boundaries. We obtain estimates on the growth in time of the support of $u$ for solutions with compactly supported initial temperatures. Besides, we show the property of conservation of positivity for $u$ so that the support never recedes. On the contrary, the enthalpy $h$ has infinite speed of propagation and we obtain precise estimates on the tail. The limits $L\to0^+$, $L\to +\infty$, $s\to0^+$ and $s\to 1^-$ are also explored, and we find interesting connections with well-studied diffusion problems. Finally, we propose convergent monotone finite-difference schemes and include numerical experiments aimed at illustrating some of the obtained theoretical results, as well as other interesting phenomena.

Convergence of dynamic programming principles for the $p$-Laplacian

We provide a unified strategy to show that solutions of dynamic programming principles associated to the $p$-Laplacian converge to the solution of the corresponding Dirichlet problem. Our approach includes all previously known cases for continuous and discrete dynamic programming principles, provides new results, and gives a convergence proof free of probability arguments.

Estimates on translations and Taylor expansions in fractional Sobolev spaces

In this paper we study how the (normalised) Gagliardo semi-norms $[u]_{W^{s,p} (\mathbb{R}^n)}$ control translations. In particular, we prove that $\| u(\cdot + y) - u \|_{L^p (\mathbb{R}^n)} \le C [ u ] _{W^{s,p} (\mathbb{R}^n)} |y|^s$ for $n\geq1$, $s \in [0,1]$ and $p \in [1,+\infty]$, where $C$ depends only on $n$. We then obtain a corresponding higher-order version of this result: we get fractional rates of the error term in the Taylor expansion. We also present relevant implications of our two results. First, we obtain a direct proof of several compact embedding of $W^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ where the Fréchet-Kolmogorov Theorem is applied with known rates. We also derive fractional rates of convergence of the convolution of a function with suitable mollifiers. Thirdly, we obtain fractional rates of convergence of finite-difference discretizations for $W^{s,p} (\mathbb{R}^n))$.

On the two-phase fractional Stefan problem

The classical Stefan problem is one of the most studied free boundary problems of evolution type. Recently, there has been interest in treating the corresponding free boundary problem with nonlocal diffusion. We start the paper by reviewing the main properties of the classical problem that are of interest for us. Then we introduce the fractional Stefan problem and develop the basic theory. After that we center our attention on selfsimilar solutions, their properties and consequences. We first discuss the results of the one-phase fractional Stefan problem which have recently been studied by the authors. Finally, we address the theory of the two-phase fractional Stefan problem which contains the main original contributions of this paper. Rigorous numerical studies support our results and claims.

The Liouville theorem and linear operators satisfying the maximum principle

A result by Courrège says that linear translation invariant operators satisfy the maximum principle if and only if they are of the form $\mathcal{L}=\mathcal{L}^{σ,b}+\mathcal{L}^μ$ where $$ \mathcal{L}^{σ,b}[u](x)=\text{tr}(σσ^{\texttt{T}} D^2u(x))+b\cdot Du(x) $$ and $$ \mathcal{L}^μ[u](x)=\int \big(u(x+z)-u-z\cdot Du(x) \mathbf{1}_{|z| \leq 1}\big) \,\mathrm{d} μ(z). $$ This class of operators coincides with the infinitesimal generators of Lévy processes in probability theory. In this paper we give a complete characterization of the translation invariant operators of this form that satisfy the Liouville theorem: Bounded solutions $u$ of $\mathcal{L}[u]=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ are constant. The Liouville property is obtained as a consequence of a periodicity result that completely characterizes bounded distributional solutions of $\mathcal{L}[u]=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The proofs combine arguments from PDE and group theories. They are simple and short.

An extension problem related to inverse fractional operators

It is well known from the work of Caffarelli and Silvestre that the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ_x)^{\fracσ{2}}$ for $σ\in (0,2)$ can be obtained as a Dirichlet-to-Neumann map through an extension problem to the upper half space. In this paper we emphasize that the inverse fractional Laplacian $(-Δ_x)^{-\fracσ{2}}$ has a similar property: it can be obtained as a Neumann-to-Dirichlet map via an extension problem to the upper half space. We also show an explicit formula for the solution of the extension problem. Moreover, we deal with powers of a more general class of second order differential operators defined in open subsets of $\mathbb{R}^N$ using the results of Stinga and Torrea. From this characterization we show possible applications among which we mention the numerical analysis of a wide class of nonlinear and nonlocal equations.

Uniqueness and properties of distributional solutions of nonlocal equations of porous medium type

We study the uniqueness, existence, and properties of bounded distributional solutions of the initial value problem problem for the anomalous diffusion equation $\partial_tu-\mathcal{L}^μ[φ(u)]=0$. Here $\mathcal{L}^μ$ can be any nonlocal symmetric degenerate elliptic operator including the fractional Laplacian and numerical discretizations of this operator. The function $φ:\mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ is only assumed to be continuous and nondecreasing. The class of equations include nonlocal (generalized) porous medium equations, fast diffusion equations, and Stefan problems. In addition to very general uniqueness and existence results, we obtain $L^1$-contraction and a priori estimates. We also study local limits, continuous dependence, and properties and convergence of a numerical approximation of our equations.

Finite and infinite speed of propagation for porous medium equations with nonlocal pressure

We study a porous medium equation with fractional potential pressure: $$ \partial_t u= \nabla \cdot (u^{m-1} \nabla p), \quad p=(-Δ)^{-s}u, $$ for $m>1$, $0<s<1$ and $u(x,t)\ge 0$. The problem is posed for $x\in \mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 1$, and $t>0$. The initial data $u(x,0)$ is assumed to be a bounded function with compact support or fast decay at infinity. We establish existence of a class of weak solutions for which we determine whether the property of compact support is conserved in time depending on the parameter $m$, starting from the result of finite propagation known for $m=2$. We find that when $m\in [1,2)$ the problem has infinite speed of propagation, while for $m\in [2,3)$ it has finite speed of propagation. In other words $m=2$ is critical exponent regarding propagation.

Transformations of Self-Similar Solutions for porous medium equations of fractional type

We consider four different models of nonlinear diffusion equations involving fractional Laplacians and study the existence and properties of classes of self-similar solutions. Such solutions are an important tool in developing the general theory. We introduce a number of transformations that allow us to map complete classes of solutions of one equation into those of another one, thus providing us with a number of new solutions, as well as interesting connections. Special attention is paid to the property of finite propagation.

Finite and infinite speed of propagation for porous medium equations with fractional pressure

We study a porous medium equation with fractional potential pressure: $$ \partial_t u= \nabla \cdot (u^{m-1} \nabla p), \quad p=(-Δ)^{-s}u, $$ for $m>1$, $0<s<1$ and $u(x,t)\ge 0$. To be specific, the problem is posed for $x\in \mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 1$, and $t>0$. The initial data $u(x,0)$ is assumed to be a bounded function with compact support or fast decay at infinity. We establish existence of a class of weak solutions for which we determine whether, depending on the parameter $m$, the property of compact support is conserved in time or not, starting from the result of finite propagation known for $m=2$. We find that when $m\in [1,2)$ the problem has infinite speed of propagation, while for $m\in [2,\infty)$ it has finite speed of propagation. Comparison is made with other nonlinear diffusion models where the results are widely different.

Finite difference method for a fractional porous medium equation

We formulate a numerical method to solve the porous medium type equation with fractional diffusion \[\frac{\partial u}{\partial t}+(-Δ)^{1/2} (u^m)=0.\] The problem is posed in $x\in \mathbb{R}^N$, $m\geq 1$ and with nonnegative initial data. The fractional Laplacian is implemented via the so-called Caffarelli-Silvestre extension. We prove existence and uniqueness of the solution of this method and also the convergence to the theoretical solution of the equation. We run numerical experiments on typical initial data.

Finite difference method for a general fractional porous medium equation

We formulate a numerical method to solve the porous medium type equation with fractional diffusion \[ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t}+(-Δ)^{σ/2} (u^m)=0 \] posed for $x\in \mathbb{R}^N$, $t>0$, with $m\geq 1$, $σ\in (0,2)$, and nonnegative initial data $u(x,0)$. We prove existence and uniqueness of the solution of the numerical method and also the convergence to the theoretical solution of the equation with an order depending on $σ$. We also propose a two points approximation to a $σ$-derivative with order $O(h^{2-σ})$.
