Normal Typicality and Dynamical Typicality for a Random Block-Band Matrix Model

We prove normal typicality and dynamical typicality for a (centered) random block-band matrix model with block-dependent variances. A key feature of our model is that we achieve intermediate equilibration times, an aspect that has not been proven rigorously in any model before. Our proof builds on recently established concentration estimates for products of resolvents of Wigner type random matrices [arXiv:2403.10359] and an intricate analysis of the deterministic approximation.

Prethermalization for Deformed Wigner Matrices

We prove that a class of weakly perturbed Hamiltonians of the form $H_λ= H_0 + λW$, with $W$ being a Wigner matrix, exhibits prethermalization. That is, the time evolution generated by $H_λ$ relaxes to its ultimate thermal state via an intermediate prethermal state with a lifetime of order $λ^{-2}$. Moreover, we obtain a general relaxation formula, expressing the perturbed dynamics via the unperturbed dynamics and the ultimate thermal state. The proof relies on a two-resolvent law for the deformed Wigner matrix $H_λ$.

Normal fluctuation in quantum ergodicity for Wigner matrices

We consider the quadratic form of a general deterministic matrix on the eigenvectors of an $N\times N$ Wigner matrix and prove that it has Gaussian fluctuation for each bulk eigenvector in the large $N$ limit. The proof is a combination of the energy method for the Dyson Brownian motion inspired by [Marcinek, Yau 2020] and our recent multi-resolvent local laws [Cipolloni, Erdős, Schröder 2020].

Small deviation estimates for the largest eigenvalue of Wigner matrices

We establish precise right-tail small deviation estimates for the largest eigenvalue of real symmetric and complex Hermitian matrices whose entries are independent random variables with uniformly bounded moments. The proof relies on a Green function comparison along a continuous interpolating matrix flow for a long time. Less precise estimates are also obtained in the left tail.

Edge Universality for non-Hermitian Random Matrices

We consider large non-Hermitian real or complex random matrices $X$ with independent, identically distributed centred entries. We prove that their local eigenvalue statistics near the spectral edge, the unit circle, coincide with those of the Ginibre ensemble, i.e. when the matrix elements of $X$ are Gaussian. This result is the non-Hermitian counterpart of the universality of the Tracy-Widom distribution at the spectral edges of the Wigner ensemble.

Random Matrices with Slow Correlation Decay

We consider large random matrices with a general slowly decaying correlation among its entries. We prove universality of the local eigenvalue statistics and optimal local laws for the resolvent away from the spectral edges, generalizing the recent result of [arXiv:1604.08188] to allow slow correlation decay and arbitrary expectation. The main novel tool is a systematic diagrammatic control of a multivariate cumulant expansion.

Towards the bulk universality of non-Hermitian random matrices

We consider the non-Hermitian analogue of the celebrated Wigner-Dyson-Mehta bulk universality phenomenon, i.e. that in the bulk the local eigenvalue statistics of a large random matrix with independent, identically distributed centred entries are universal, in particular they asymptotically coincide with those of the Ginibre ensemble in the corresponding symmetry class. In this paper we reduce this problem to understanding a certain microscopic regime for the Hermitized resolvent in Girko's formula by showing that all other regimes are negligible.

Correlated Random Matrices: Band Rigidity and Edge Universality

We prove edge universality for a general class of correlated real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrices with arbitrary expectation. Our theorem also applies to internal edges of the self-consistent density of states. In particular, we establish a strong form of band rigidity which excludes mismatches between location and label of eigenvalues close to internal edges in these general models.

Phase Transition in the Density of States of Quantum Spin Glasses

We prove that the empirical density of states of quantum spin glasses on arbitrary graphs converges to a normal distribution as long as the maximal degree is negligible compared with the total number of edges. This extends the recent results of [6] that were proved for graphs with bounded chromatic number and with symmetric coupling distribution. Furthermore, we generalise the result to arbitrary hypergraphs. We test the optimality of our condition on the maximal degree for $p$-uniform hypergraphs that correspond to $p$-spin glass Hamiltonians acting on $n$ distinguishable spin-$1/2$ particles. At the critical threshold $p=n^{1/2}$ we find a sharp classical-quantum phase transition between the normal distribution and the Wigner semicircle law. The former is characteristic to classical systems with commuting variables, while the latter is a signature of noncommutative random matrix theory.

Spectral statistics of Erdős-Rényi graphs I: Local semicircle law

We consider the ensemble of adjacency matrices of Erdős-Rényi random graphs, that is, graphs on $N$ vertices where every edge is chosen independently and with probability $p\equiv p(N)$. We rescale the matrix so that its bulk eigenvalues are of order one. We prove that, as long as $pN\to\infty$ (with a speed at least logarithmic in $N$), the density of eigenvalues of the Erdős-Rényi ensemble is given by the Wigner semicircle law for spectral windows of length larger than $N^{-1}$ (up to logarithmic corrections). As a consequence, all eigenvectors are proved to be completely delocalized in the sense that the $\ell^{\infty}$-norms of the $\ell^2$-normalized eigenvectors are at most of order $N^{-1/2}$ with a very high probability. The estimates in this paper will be used in the companion paper [Spectral statistics of Erdős-Rényi graphs II: Eigenvalue spacing and the extreme eigenvalues (2011) Preprint] to prove the universality of eigenvalue distributions both in the bulk and at the spectral edges under the further restriction that $pN\gg N^{2/3}$.
