Levi-Civita connections on quantum spheres

We introduce $q$-deformed connections on the quantum 2-sphere and 3-sphere, satisfying a twisted Leibniz rule in analogy with $q$-deformed derivations. We show that such connections always exist on projective modules. Furthermore, a condition for metric compatibility is introduced, and an explicit formula is given, parametrizing all metric connections on a free module. On the quantum 3-sphere, a q-deformed torsion freeness condition is introduced and we derive explicit expressions for the Christoffel symbols of a Levi-Civita connection for a general class of metrics. We also give metric connections on a class of projective modules over the quantum 2-sphere. Finally, we outline a generalization to any Hopf algebra with a (left) covariant calculus and associated quantum tangent space.

On the construction of fuzzy spaces and modules over shift algebras

We introduce shift algebras as certain crossed product algebras based on general function spaces and study properties, as well as the classification, of a particular class of modules depending on a set of matrix parameters. It turns out that the structure of these modules depends in a crucial way on the properties of the function spaces. Moreover, for a class of subalgebras related to compact manifolds, we provide a construction procedure for the corresponding fuzzy spaces, i.e. sequences of finite dimensional modules of increasing dimension as the deformation parameter tends to zero, as well as infinite dimensional modules related to fuzzy non-compact spaces.

On the geometry of $(σ,τ)$-algebras

We introduce $(σ,τ)$-algebras as a framework for twisted differential calculi over noncommutative, as well as commutative, algebras with motivations from the theory of $σ$-derivations and quantum groups. A $(σ,τ)$-algebra consists of an associative algebra together with a set of $(σ,τ)$-derivations, and corresponding notions of $(σ,τ)$-modules and connections are introduced. We prove that $(σ,τ)$-connections exist on projective modules, and introduce notions of both torsion and curvature, as well as compatibility with a hermitian form, leading to the definition of a Levi-Civita $(σ,τ)$-connection. To illustrate the novel concepts, we consider $(σ,τ)$-algebras and connections over matrix algebras in detail.

Levi-Civita connections for a class of noncommutative minimal surfaces

We study connections on hermitian modules, and show that metric connections exist on regular hermitian modules; i.e finitely generated projective modules together with a non-singular hermitian form. In addition, we develop an index calculus for such modules, and provide a characterization in terms of the existence of a pseudo-inverse of the matrix representing the hermitian form with respect to a set of generators. As a first illustration of the above concepts, we find metric connections on the fuzzy sphere. Finally, the framework is applied to a class of noncommutative minimal surfaces, for which there is a natural concept of torsion, and we prove that there exist metric and torsion-free connections for every minimal surface in this class.

Noncommutative minimal embeddings and morphisms of pseudo-Riemannian calculi

In analogy with classical submanifold theory, we introduce morphisms of real metric calculi together with noncommutative embeddings. We show that basic concepts, such as the second fundamental form and the Weingarten map, translate into the noncommutative setting and, in particular, we prove a noncommutative analogue of Gauss equations for the curvature of a submanifold. Moreover, the mean curvature of an embedding is readily introduced, giving a natural definition of a noncommutative minimal embedding, and we illustrate the novel concepts by considering the noncommutative torus as a minimal surface in the noncommutative 3-sphere.

On q-deformed Levi-Civita connections

We explore the possibility of introducing q-deformed connections on the quantum 2-sphere and 3-sphere, satisfying a twisted Leibniz rule in analogy with q-deformed derivations. We show that such connections always exist on projective modules. Furthermore, a condition for metric compatibility is introduced, and an explicit formula is given, parametrizing all metric connections on a free module. For the module of 1-forms on the quantum 3-sphere, a q-deformed torsion freeness condition is introduced and we derive explicit expressions for the Christoffel symbols of a Levi-Civita connection for a general class of metrics satisfying a certain reality condition. Finally, we construct metric connections on a class of projective modules over the quantum 2-sphere.

Projections, modules and connections for the noncommutative cylinder

We initiate a study of projections and modules over a noncommutative cylinder, a simple example of a noncompact noncommutative manifold. Since its algebraic structure turns out to have many similarities with the noncommutative torus, one can develop several concepts in a close analogy with the latter. In particular, we exhibit a countable number of nontrivial projections in the algebra of the noncommutative cylinder itself, and show that they provide concrete representatives for each class in the corresponding $K_0$ group. We also construct a class of bimodules endowed with connections of constant curvature. Furthermore, with the noncommutative cylinder considered from the perspective of pseudo-Riemannian calculi, we derive an explicit expression for the Levi-Civita connection and compute the Gaussian curvature.

Low dimensional matrix representations for noncommutative surfaces of arbitrary genus

In this note, we initiate a study of the finite-dimensional representation theory of a class of algebras that correspond to noncommutative deformations of compact surfaces of arbitrary genus. Low dimensional representations are investigated in detail and graph representations are used in order to understand the structure of non-zero matrix elements. In particular, for arbitrary genus greater than one, we explicitly construct classes of irreducible two and three dimensional representations. The existence of representations crucially depends on the analytic structure of the polynomial defining the surface as a level set in $\mathbb{R}^3$.

On the Gauss-Chern-Bonnet theorem for the noncommutative 4-sphere

We construct a differential calculus over the noncommutative 4-sphere in the framework of pseudo-Riemannian calculi, and show that for every metric in a conformal class of perturbations of the round metric, there exists a unique metric and torsion-free connection. Furthermore, we find a localization of the projective module corresponding to the space of vector fields, which allows us to formulate a Gauss-Chern-Bonnet type theorem for the noncommutative 4-sphere.

An axiomatic approach to gradients with applications to Dirichlet and obstacle problems beyond function spaces

We develop a framework for studying variational problems in Banach spaces with respect to gradient relations, which encompasses many of the notions of generalized gradients that appear in the literature. We stress the fact that our approach is not dependent on function spaces and therefore applies equally well to functions on metric spaces as to operator algebras. In particular, we consider analogues of Dirichlet and obstacle problems, as well as first eigenvalue problems, and formulate conditions for the existence of solutions and their uniqueness. Moreover, we investigate to what extent a lattice structure may be introduced on (ordered) Banach spaces via a norm-minimizing variational problem. A multitude of examples is provided to illustrate the versatility of our approach.

Riemannian curvature of the noncommutative 3-sphere

In order to investigate to what extent the calculus of classical (pseudo-)Riemannian manifolds can be extended to a noncommutative setting, we introduce pseudo-Riemannian calculi of modules over noncommutative algebras. In this framework, it is possible to prove an analogue of Levi-Civita's theorem, stating that there exists at most one torsion-free and metric connection for a given (metric) module, satisfying the requirements of a real metric calculus. Furthermore, the corresponding curvature operator has the same symmetry properties as the classical Riemannian curvature. As our main motivating example, we consider a pseudo-Riemannian calculus over the noncommutative 3-sphere and explicitly determine the torsion-free and metric connection, as well as the curvature operator together with its scalar curvature.

Curvature and geometric modules of noncommutative spheres and tori

When considered as submanifolds of Euclidean space, the Riemannian geometry of the round sphere and the Clifford torus may be formulated in terms of Poisson algebraic expressions involving the embedding coordinates, and a central object is the projection operator, projecting tangent vectors in the ambient space onto the tangent space of the submanifold. In this note, we point out that there exist noncommutative analogues of these projection operators, which implies a very natural definition of noncommutative tangent spaces as particular projective modules. These modules carry an induced connection from Euclidean space, and we compute its scalar curvature.

Deformed Noncommutative Tori

We recall a construction of non-commutative algebras related to a one-parameter family of (deformed) spheres and tori, and show that in the case of tori, the *-algebras can be completed into C*-algebras isomorphic to the standard non-commutative torus. As the former was constructed in the context of matrix (or fuzzy) geometries, it provides an important link to the framework of non-commutative geometry, and opens up for a concrete way to study deformations of non-commutative tori. Furthermore, we show how the well-known fuzzy sphere and fuzzy torus can be obtained as formal scaling limits of finite-dimensional representations of the deformed algebras, and their projective modules are described together with connections of constant curvature.

On the geometry of Kähler-Poisson structures

We prove that the Riemannian geometry of almost Kähler manifolds can be expressed in terms of the Poisson algebra of smooth functions on the manifold. Subsequently, Kähler-Poisson algebras are introduced, and it is shown that a corresponding purely algebraic theory of geometry and curvature can be developed. As an illustration of the new concepts we give an algebraic proof of the statement that a bound on the (algebraic) Ricci curvature induces a bound on the eigenvalues of the (algebraic) Laplace operator, in analogy with the well-known theorem in Riemannian geometry. As the correspondence between Poisson brackets of smooth functions and commutators of operators lies at the heart of quantization, a purely Poisson algebraic proof of, for instance, such a "Gap Theorem", might lead to an understanding of spectral properties in a corresponding quantum mechanical system.

Construction of n-Lie algebras and n-ary Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras

We present a procedure to construct (n+1)-Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras from n-Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras equipped with a generalized trace function. It turns out that the implications of the compatibility conditions, that are necessary for this construction, can be understood in terms of the kernel of the trace function and the range of the twisting maps. Furthermore, we investigate the possibility of defining (n+k)-Lie algebras from n-Lie algebras and a k-form satisfying certain conditions.

Discrete Minimal Surface Algebras

We consider discrete minimal surface algebras (DMSA) as generalized noncommutative analogues of minimal surfaces in higher dimensional spheres. These algebras appear naturally in membrane theory, where sequences of their representations are used as a regularization. After showing that the defining relations of the algebra are consistent, and that one can compute a basis of the enveloping algebra, we give several explicit examples of DMSAs in terms of subsets of sl(n) (any semi-simple Lie algebra providing a trivial example by itself). A special class of DMSAs are Yang-Mills algebras. The representation graph is introduced to study representations of DMSAs of dimension d<=4, and properties of representations are related to properties of graphs. The representation graph of a tensor product is (generically) the Cartesian product of the corresponding graphs. We provide explicit examples of irreducible representations and, for coinciding eigenvalues, classify all the unitary representations of the corresponding algebras.

Multi linear formulation of differential geometry and matrix regularizations

We prove that many aspects of the differential geometry of embedded Riemannian manifolds can be formulated in terms of multi linear algebraic structures on the space of smooth functions. In particular, we find algebraic expressions for Weingarten's formula, the Ricci curvature and the Codazzi-Mainardi equations. For matrix analogues of embedded surfaces we define discrete curvatures and Euler characteristics, and a non-commutative Gauss--Bonnet theorem is shown to follow. We derive simple expressions for the discrete Gauss curvature in terms of matrices representing the embedding coordinates, and a large class of explicit examples is provided. Furthermore, we illustrate the fact that techniques from differential geometry can carry over to matrix analogues by proving that a bound on the discrete Gauss curvature implies a bound on the eigenvalues of the discrete Laplace operator.

On the classical geometry of embedded surfaces in terms of Poisson brackets

We consider surfaces embedded in a Riemannian manifold of arbitrary dimension and prove that many aspects of their differential geometry can be expressed in terms of a Poisson algebraic structure on the space of smooth functions of the surface. In particular, we find algebraic formulas for Weingarten's equations, the complex structure and the Gaussian curvature.

Ternary Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras induced by Hom-Lie algebras

The purpose of this paper is to investigate ternary multiplications constructed from a binary multiplication, linear twisting maps and a trace function. We provide a construction of ternary Hom-Nambu and Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras starting from a binary multiplication of a Hom-Lie algebra and a trace function satisfying certain compatibility conditions involving twisting maps. We show that mutual position of kernels of twisting maps and the trace play important role in this context, and provide examples of Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras obtained using this construction.
