Braided Hopf algebras and gauge transformations

We study infinitesimal gauge transformations of an equivariant noncommutative principal bundle as a braided Lie algebra of derivations. For this, we analyse general $K$-braided Hopf and Lie algebras, for $K$ a (quasi)triangular Hopf algebra of symmetries, and study their representations as braided derivations. We then study Drinfeld twist deformations of braided Hopf algebras and of Lie algebras of infinitesimal gauge transformations. We give examples coming from deformations of abelian and Jordanian type. In particular we explicitly describe the braided Lie algebra of gauge transformations of the instanton bundle and of the orthogonal bundle on the quantum sphere $S^4_θ$.

Hopf algebroids from noncommutative bundles

We present two classes of examples of Hopf algebroids associated with noncommutative principal bundles. The first comes from deforming the principal bundle while leaving unchanged the structure Hopf algebra. The second is related to deforming a quantum homogeneous space; this needs a careful deformation of the structure Hopf algebra in order to preserve the compatibilities between the Hopf algebra operations.

Levi-Civita connections on quantum spheres

We introduce $q$-deformed connections on the quantum 2-sphere and 3-sphere, satisfying a twisted Leibniz rule in analogy with $q$-deformed derivations. We show that such connections always exist on projective modules. Furthermore, a condition for metric compatibility is introduced, and an explicit formula is given, parametrizing all metric connections on a free module. On the quantum 3-sphere, a q-deformed torsion freeness condition is introduced and we derive explicit expressions for the Christoffel symbols of a Levi-Civita connection for a general class of metrics. We also give metric connections on a class of projective modules over the quantum 2-sphere. Finally, we outline a generalization to any Hopf algebra with a (left) covariant calculus and associated quantum tangent space.

Tolerance Relations and Quantization

It is well known that "bad" quotient spaces (typically: non-Hausdorff) can be studied by associating to them the groupoid C*-algebra of an equivalence relation, that in the "nice" cases is Morita equivalent to the C*-algebra of continuous functions vanishing at infinity on the quotient space. It was recently proposed by A. Connes and W.D. van Suijlekom that a similar procedure for relations that are reflexive and symmetric but fail to be transitive (i.e. tolerance relations) leads to an operator system. In this paper we observe that such an operator system carries a natural product that, although in general non-associative, arises in a number of relevant examples. We relate this product to truncations of (C*-algebras of) topological spaces, discuss some geometric aspects and a connection with positive operator valued measures.

Levi-Civita connections and vector fields for noncommutative differential calculi

We study covariant derivatives on a class of centered bimodules $\mathcal{E}$ over an algebra A. We begin by identifying a $\mathbb{Z} ( A ) $-submodule $ \mathcal{X} ( A ) $ which can be viewed as the analogue of vector fields in this context; $ \mathcal{X} ( A ) $ is proven to be a Lie algebra. Connections on $\mathcal{E}$ are in one to one correspondence with covariant derivatives on $ \mathcal{X} ( A ). $ We recover the classical formulas of torsion and metric compatibility of a connection in the covariant derivative form. As a result, a Koszul formula for the Levi-Civita connection is also derived.

On q-deformed Levi-Civita connections

We explore the possibility of introducing q-deformed connections on the quantum 2-sphere and 3-sphere, satisfying a twisted Leibniz rule in analogy with q-deformed derivations. We show that such connections always exist on projective modules. Furthermore, a condition for metric compatibility is introduced, and an explicit formula is given, parametrizing all metric connections on a free module. For the module of 1-forms on the quantum 3-sphere, a q-deformed torsion freeness condition is introduced and we derive explicit expressions for the Christoffel symbols of a Levi-Civita connection for a general class of metrics satisfying a certain reality condition. Finally, we construct metric connections on a class of projective modules over the quantum 2-sphere.

On the Koszul formula in noncommutative geometry

We prove a Koszul formula for the Levi-Civita connection for any pseudo-Riemannian bilinear metric on a class of centered bimodule of noncommutative one-forms. As an application to the Koszul formula, we show that our Levi-Civita connection is a bimodule connection. We construct a spectral triple on a fuzzy sphere and compute the scalar curvature for the Levi-Civita connection associated to a canonical metric.

Projections, modules and connections for the noncommutative cylinder

We initiate a study of projections and modules over a noncommutative cylinder, a simple example of a noncompact noncommutative manifold. Since its algebraic structure turns out to have many similarities with the noncommutative torus, one can develop several concepts in a close analogy with the latter. In particular, we exhibit a countable number of nontrivial projections in the algebra of the noncommutative cylinder itself, and show that they provide concrete representatives for each class in the corresponding $K_0$ group. We also construct a class of bimodules endowed with connections of constant curvature. Furthermore, with the noncommutative cylinder considered from the perspective of pseudo-Riemannian calculi, we derive an explicit expression for the Levi-Civita connection and compute the Gaussian curvature.

The Gauge Group of a Noncommutative Principal Bundle and Twist Deformations

We study noncommutative principal bundles (Hopf-Galois extensions) in the context of coquasitriangular Hopf algebras and their monoidal category of comodule algebras. When the total space is quasi-commutative, and thus the base space subalgebra is central, we define the gauge group as the group of vertical automorphisms or equivalently as the group of equivariant algebra maps. We study Drinfeld twist (2-cocycle) deformations of Hopf-Galois extensions and show that the gauge group of the twisted extension is isomorphic to the gauge group of the initial extension. In particular, noncommutative principal bundles arising via twist deformation of commutative principal bundles have classical gauge group. We illustrate the theory with a few examples.

Sigma-model solitons on noncommutative spaces

We use results from time-frequency analysis and Gabor analysis to construct new classes of sigma-model solitons over the Moyal plane and over noncommutative tori, taken as source spaces, with a target space made of two points. A natural action functional leads to self-duality equations for projections in the source algebra. Solutions, having non-trivial topological content, are constructed via suitable Morita duality bimodules.

preprint2016arXiv

Twisted sigma-model solitons on the quantum projective line

On the configuration space of projections in a noncommutative algebra, and for an automorphism of the algebra, we use a twisted Hochschild cocycle for an action functional, and a twisted cyclic cocycle for a topological term. The latter is Hochschild-cohomologous to the former and positivity in twisted Hochschild cohomology results into a lower bound for the action functional. While the equations for the critical points are rather complicate, the use of the positivity and the bound by the topological term leads to self-duality equations (thus yielding twisted noncommutative sigma-model solitons, or instantons). We present explicit non trivial solutions on the quantum projective line.

Pimsner algebras and Gysin sequences from principal circle actions

A self Morita equivalence over an algebra B, given by a B-bimodule E, is thought of as a line bundle over B. The corresponding Pimsner algebra O_E is then the total space algebra of a noncommutative principal circle bundle over B. A natural Gysin-like sequence relates the KK-theories of O_E and of B. Interesting examples come from O_E a quantum lens space over B a quantum weighted projective line (with arbitrary weights). The KK-theory of these spaces is explicitly computed and natural generators are exhibited.

Quantum weighted projective and lens spaces

We generalize to quantum weighted projective spaces in any dimension previous results of us on K-theory and K-homology of quantum projective spaces `tout court'. For a class of such spaces, we explicitly construct families of Fredholm modules, both bounded and unbounded (that is spectral triples), and prove that they are linearly independent in the K-homology of the corresponding C*-algebra. We also show that the quantum weighted projective spaces are base spaces of quantum principal circle bundles whose total spaces are quantum lens spaces. We construct finitely generated projective modules associated with the principal bundles and pair them with the Fredholm modules, thus proving their non-triviality.

Anti-selfdual Connections On The Quantum Projective Plane: Instantons

We study one-instantons, that is anti-selfdual connections with instanton number 1, on the quantum projective plane with orientation which is reversed with respect to the usual one. The orientation is fixed by a suitable choice of a basis element for the rank 1 free bimodule of top forms. The noncommutative family of solutions is foliated, each non-singular leaves being isomorphic to the quantum projective plane itself.

Projective Modules of Finite Type over the Supersphere $S^{2,2}$

In the spirit of noncommutative geometry we construct all inequivalent vector bundles over the $(2,2)$-dimensional supersphere $S^{2,2}$ by means of global projectors $p$ via equivariant maps. Each projector determines the projective module of finite type of sections of the corresponding `rank 1' supervector bundle over $S^{2,2}$. The canonical connection $\nabla = p \circ d$ is used to compute the Chern numbers by means of the Berezin integral on $S^{2,2}$. The associated connection 1-forms are graded extensions of monopoles with not trivial topological charge. Supertransposed projectors gives opposite values for the charges. We also comment on the $K$-theory of $S^{2,2}$.

The Gysin Sequence for Quantum Lens Spaces

We define quantum lens spaces as `direct sums of line bundles' and exhibit them as `total spaces' of certain principal bundles over quantum projective spaces. For each of these quantum lens spaces we construct an analogue of the classical Gysin sequence in K-theory. We use the sequence to compute the K-theory of the quantum lens spaces, in particular to give explicit geometric representatives of their K-theory classes. These representatives are interpreted as `line bundles' over quantum lens spaces and generically define `torsion classes'. We work out explicit examples of these classes.

Algebraic deformations of toric varieties I. General constructions

We construct and study noncommutative deformations of toric varieties by combining techniques from toric geometry, isospectral deformations, and noncommutative geometry in braided monoidal categories. Our approach utilizes the same fan structure of the variety but deforms the underlying embedded algebraic torus. We develop a sheaf theory using techniques from noncommutative algebraic geometry. The cases of projective varieties are studied in detail, and several explicit examples are worked out, including new noncommutative deformations of Grassmann and flag varieties. Our constructions set up the basic ingredients for thorough study of instantons on noncommutative toric varieties, which will be the subject of the sequel to this paper.

The Weil Algebra of a Hopf Algebra - I - A noncommutative framework

We generalize the notion, introduced by Henri Cartan, of an operation of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ in a graded differential algebra $Ω$. We define the notion of an operation of a Hopf algebra $\mathcal H$ in a graded differential algebra $Ω$ which is refered to as a $\mathcal H$-operation. We then generalize for such an operation the notion of algebraic connection. Finally we discuss the corresponding noncommutative version of the Weil algebra: The Weil algebra $W(\mathcal H)$ of the Hopf algebra $\mathcal H$ is the universal initial object of the category of $\mathcal H$-operations with connections.

Algebraic deformations of toric varieties II. Noncommutative instantons

We continue our study of the noncommutative algebraic and differential geometry of a particular class of deformations of toric varieties, focusing on aspects pertinent to the construction and enumeration of noncommutative instantons on these varieties. We develop a noncommutative version of twistor theory, which introduces a new example of a noncommutative four-sphere. We develop a braided version of the ADHM construction and show that it parametrizes a certain moduli space of framed torsion free sheaves on a noncommutative projective plane. We use these constructions to explicitly build instanton gauge bundles with canonical connections on the noncommutative four-sphere that satisfy appropriate anti-selfduality equations. We construct projective moduli spaces for the torsion free sheaves and demonstrate that they are smooth. We define equivariant partition functions of these moduli spaces, finding that they coincide with the usual instanton partition functions for supersymmetric gauge theories on C^2.

Calculi, Hodge operators and Laplacians on a quantum Hopf fibration

We describe Laplacian operators on the quantum group SUq (2) equipped with the four dimensional bicovariant differential calculus of Woronowicz as well as on the quantum homogeneous space S2q with the restricted left covariant three dimensional differential calculus. This is done by giving a family of Hodge dualities on both the exterior algebras of SUq (2) and S2q . We also study gauged Laplacian operators acting on sections of line bundles over the quantum sphere.

Differential and Twistor Geometry of the Quantum Hopf Fibration

We study a quantum version of the SU(2) Hopf fibration $S^7 \to S^4$ and its associated twistor geometry. Our quantum sphere $S^7_q$ arises as the unit sphere inside a q-deformed quaternion space $\mathbb{H}^2_q$. The resulting four-sphere $S^4_q$ is a quantum analogue of the quaternionic projective space $\mathbb{HP}^1$. The quantum fibration is endowed with compatible non-universal differential calculi. By investigating the quantum symmetries of the fibration, we obtain the geometry of the corresponding twistor space $\mathbb{CP}^3_q$ and use it to study a system of anti-self-duality equations on $S^4_q$, for which we find an `instanton' solution coming from the natural projection defining the tautological bundle over $S^4_q$.

Instantons and vortices on noncommutative toric varieties

We elaborate on the quantization of toric varieties by combining techniques from toric geometry, isospectral deformations and noncommutative geometry in braided monoidal categories, and the construction of instantons thereon by combining methods from noncommutative algebraic geometry and a quantised twistor theory. We classify the real structures on a toric noncommutative deformation of the Klein quadric and use this to derive a new noncommutative four-sphere which is the unique deformation compatible with the noncommutative twistor correspondence. We extend the computation of equivariant instanton partition functions to noncommutative gauge theories with both adjoint and fundamental matter fields, finding agreement with the classical results in all instances. We construct moduli spaces of noncommutative vortices from the moduli of invariant instantons, and derive corresponding equivariant partition functions which also agree with those of the classical limit.

Moduli Spaces of Instantons on Toric Noncommutative Manifolds

We study analytic aspects of U(n) gauge theory over a toric noncommutative manifold $M_θ$. We analyse moduli spaces of solutions to the self-dual Yang-Mills equations on U(2) vector bundles over four-manifolds $M_θ$, showing that each such moduli space is either empty or a smooth Hausdorff manifold whose dimension we explicitly compute. In the special case of the four-sphere $S^4_θ$ we find that the moduli space of U(2) instantons with fixed second Chern number $k$ is a smooth manifold of dimension $8k-3$.

Dimensional reduction over the quantum sphere and non-abelian q-vortices

We extend equivariant dimensional reduction techniques to the case of quantum spaces which are the product of a Kaehler manifold M with the quantum two-sphere. We work out the reduction of bundles which are equivariant under the natural action of the quantum group SU_q(2), and also of invariant gauge connections on these bundles. The reduction of Yang-Mills gauge theory on the product space leads to a q-deformation of the usual quiver gauge theories on M. We formulate generalized instanton equations on the quantum space and show that they correspond to q-deformations of the usual holomorphic quiver chain vortex equations on M. We study some topological stability conditions for the existence of solutions to these equations, and demonstrate that the corresponding vacuum moduli spaces are generally better behaved than their undeformed counterparts, but much more constrained by the q-deformation. We work out several explicit examples, including new examples of non-abelian vortices on Riemann surfaces, and q-deformations of instantons whose moduli spaces admit the standard hyper-Kaehler quotient construction.

Generalized TKNN-equations

We derive generalized TKNN-equations via bundle representations of the noncommutative torus with rational deformation parameter, the bundle coming from spectral projections in the torus algebra. These equations relate Chern numbers of dual bundles which we interpret as Hall conductances for Dirac-like Hamiltonians describing magnetic Bloch electrons in a strong magnetic field. We also present their generalizations for irrational values of the deformation parameter.

Anti-selfdual Connections on the Quantum Projective Plane: Monopoles

We present several results on the geometry of the quantum projective plane CP2q. They include: explicit generators for the K-theory and the K-homology; a real calculus with a Hodge star operator; anti-selfdual connections on line bundles with explicit computation of the corresponding 'monopoles' and 'instanton' charges; complete diagonalization of gauged Laplacians on these line bundles; quantum invariants via equivariant K-theory and q-indices.

Families of Monads and Instantons from a Noncommutative ADHM Construction

We give a θ-deformed version of the ADHM construction of SU(2) instantons with arbitrary topological charge on the sphere S^4. Classically the instanton gauge fields are constructed from suitable monad data; we show that in the deformed case the set of monads is itself a noncommutative space. We use these monads to construct noncommutative `families' of SU(2) instantons on the deformed sphere S^4_θ. We also compute the topological charge of each of the families. Finally we discuss what it means for such families to be gauge equivalent.

Holomorphic structures on the quantum projective line

We show that much of the structure of the 2-sphere as a complex curve survives the q-deformation and has natural generalizations to the quantum 2-sphere - which, with additional structures, we identify with the quantum projective line. Notably among these is the identification of a quantum homogeneous coordinate ring with the coordinate ring of the quantum plane. In parallel with the fact that positive Hochschild cocycles on the algebra of smooth functions on a compact oriented 2-dimensional manifold encode the information for complex structures on the surface, we formulate a notion of twisted positivity for twisted Hochschild and cyclic cocycles and exhibit an explicit twisted positive Hochschild cocycle for the complex structure on the sphere.

Moduli spaces of noncommutative instantons: gauging away noncommutative parameters

Using the theory of noncommutative geometry in a braided monoidal category, we improve upon a previous construction of noncommutative families of instantons of arbitrary charge on the deformed sphere S^4_θ. We formulate a notion of noncommutative parameter spaces for families of instantons and we explore what it means for such families to be gauge equivalent, as well as showing how to remove gauge parameters using a noncommutative quotient construction. Although the parameter spaces are a priori noncommutative, we show that one may always recover a classical parameter space by making an appropriate choice of gauge transformation.

The 3D Spin Geometry of the Quantum Two-Sphere

We study a three-dimensional differential calculus on the standard Podles quantum two-sphere S^2_q, coming from the Woronowicz 4D+ differential calculus on the quantum group SU_q(2). We use a frame bundle approach to give an explicit description of the space of forms on S^2_q and its associated spin geometry in terms of a natural spectral triple over S^2_q. We equip this spectral triple with a real structure for which the commutant property and the first order condition are satisfied up to infinitesimals of arbitrary order.

Noncommutative Spheres and Instantons

We report on some recent work on deformation of spaces, notably deformation of spheres, describing two classes of examples. The first class of examples consists of noncommutative manifolds associated with the so called $θ$-deformations which were introduced out of a simple analysis in terms of cycles in the $(b,B)$-complex of cyclic homology. These examples have non-trivial global features and can be endowed with a structure of noncommutative manifolds, in terms of a spectral triple $(\ca, \ch, D)$. In particular, noncommutative spheres $S^{N}_θ$ are isospectral deformations of usual spherical geometries. For the corresponding spectral triple $(\cinf(S^{N}_θ), \ch, D)$, both the Hilbert space of spinors $\ch= L^2(S^{N},\cs)$ and the Dirac operator $D$ are the usual ones on the commutative $N$-dimensional sphere $S^{N}$ and only the algebra and its action on $\ch$ are deformed. The second class of examples is made of the so called quantum spheres $S^{N}_q$ which are homogeneous spaces of quantum orthogonal and quantum unitary groups. For these spheres, there is a complete description of $K$-theory, in terms of nontrivial self-adjoint idempotents (projections) and unitaries, and of the $K$-homology, in term of nontrivial Fredholm modules, as well as of the corresponding Chern characters in cyclic homology and cohomology.

A New Matrix Model for Noncommutative Field Theory

We describe a new regularization of quantum field theory on the noncommutative torus by means of one-dimensional matrix models. The construction is based on the Elliott-Evans inductive limit decomposition of the noncommutative torus algebra. The matrix trajectories are obtained via the expansion of fields in a basis of new noncommutative solitons described by projections and partial isometries. The matrix quantum mechanics are compared with the usual zero-dimensional matrix model regularizations and some applications are sketched.

Twisted Configurations over Quantum Euclidean Spheres

We show that the relations which define the algebras of the quantum Euclidean planes $\b{R}^N_q$ can be expressed in terms of projections provided that the unique central element, the radial distance from the origin, is fixed. The resulting reduced algebras without center are the quantum Euclidean spheres $S^{N-1}_q$. The projections $e=e^2=e^*$ are elements in $\Mat_{2^n}(S^{N-1}_q)$, with N=2n+1 or N=2n, and can be regarded as defining modules of sections of q-generalizations of monopoles, instantons or more general twisted bundles over the spheres. We also give the algebraic definition of normal and cotangent bundles over the spheres in terms of canonically defined projections in $\Mat_{N}(S^{N-1}_q)$.

Projective Modules of Finite Type and Monopoles over $S^2$

We give a unifying description of all inequivalent vector bundles over the 2-dimensional sphere $S^2$ by constructing suitable global projectors $p$ via equivariant maps. Each projector determines the projective module of finite type of sections of the corresponding complex rank 1 vector bundle over $S^2$. The canonical connection $\nabla = p \circ d$ is used to compute the topological charges. Transposed projectors gives opposite values for the charges, thus showing that transposition of projectors, although an isomorphism in K-theory, is not the identity map. Also, we construct the partial isometry yielding the equivalence between the tangent projector (which is trivial in K-theory) and the real form of the charge 2 projector.
