NegDL: Privacy-Preserving Deep Learning Based on Negative Database

In the era of big data, deep learning has become an increasingly popular topic. It has outstanding achievements in the fields of image recognition, object detection, and natural language processing et al. The first priority of deep learning is exploiting valuable information from a large amount of data, which will inevitably induce privacy issues that are worthy of attention. Presently, several privacy-preserving deep learning methods have been proposed, but most of them suffer from a non-negligible degradation of either efficiency or accuracy. Negative database (\textit{NDB}) is a new type of data representation which can protect data privacy by storing and utilizing the complementary form of original data. In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving deep learning method named NegDL based on \textit{NDB}. Specifically, private data are first converted to \textit{NDB} as the input of deep learning models by a generation algorithm called \textit{QK}-hidden algorithm, and then the sketches of \textit{NDB} are extracted for training and inference. We demonstrate that the computational complexity of NegDL is the same as the original deep learning model without privacy protection. Experimental results on Breast Cancer, MNIST, and CIFAR-10 benchmark datasets demonstrate that the accuracy of NegDL could be comparable to the original deep learning model in most cases, and it performs better than the method based on differential privacy.

Error Estimates for Deep Learning Methods in Fluid Dynamics

In this study, we provide error estimates and stability analysis of deep learning techniques for certain partial differential equations including the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. In particular, we obtain explicit error estimates (in suitable norms) for the solution computed by optimizing a loss function in a Deep Neural Network (DNN) approximation of the solution, with a fixed complexity.

Orthant Based Proximal Stochastic Gradient Method for $\ell_1$-Regularized Optimization

Sparsity-inducing regularization problems are ubiquitous in machine learning applications, ranging from feature selection to model compression. In this paper, we present a novel stochastic method -- Orthant Based Proximal Stochastic Gradient Method (OBProx-SG) -- to solve perhaps the most popular instance, i.e., the l1-regularized problem. The OBProx-SG method contains two steps: (i) a proximal stochastic gradient step to predict a support cover of the solution; and (ii) an orthant step to aggressively enhance the sparsity level via orthant face projection. Compared to the state-of-the-art methods, e.g., Prox-SG, RDA and Prox-SVRG, the OBProx-SG not only converges to the global optimal solutions (in convex scenario) or the stationary points (in non-convex scenario), but also promotes the sparsity of the solutions substantially. Particularly, on a large number of convex problems, OBProx-SG outperforms the existing methods comprehensively in the aspect of sparsity exploration and objective values. Moreover, the experiments on non-convex deep neural networks, e.g., MobileNetV1 and ResNet18, further demonstrate its superiority by achieving the solutions of much higher sparsity without sacrificing generalization accuracy.

BiRA-Net: Bilinear Attention Net for Diabetic Retinopathy Grading

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common retinal disease that leads to blindness. For diagnosis purposes, DR image grading aims to provide automatic DR grade classification, which is not addressed in conventional research methods of binary DR image classification. Small objects in the eye images, like lesions and microaneurysms, are essential to DR grading in medical imaging, but they could easily be influenced by other objects. To address these challenges, we propose a new deep learning architecture, called BiRA-Net, which combines the attention model for feature extraction and bilinear model for fine-grained classification. Furthermore, in considering the distance between different grades of different DR categories, we propose a new loss function, called grading loss, which leads to improved training convergence of the proposed approach. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed approach.

A Prototype Scalable Readout System for Micro-pattern Gas Detectors

A scalable readout system (SRS) is designed to provide a general solution for different micro-pattern gas detectors. The system mainly consists of three kinds of modules: the ASIC card, the Adapter card and the Front-End Card (FEC). The ASIC cards, mounted with particular ASIC chips, are designed for receiving detector signals. The Adapter card is in charge of digitizing the output signals from several ASIC cards. The FEC, edged-mounted with the Adapter, has a FPGA-based reconfigurable logic and I/O interfaces, allowing users to choose various ASIC cards and Adapters for different types of detectors. The FEC transfers data through Gigabit Ethernet protocol realized by a TCP processor (SiTCP) IP core in field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA). The readout system can be tailored to specific sizes to adapt to the experiment scales and readout requirements. In this paper, two kinds of multi-channel ASIC chips, VA140 and AGET, are applied to verify the concept of this SRS architecture. Based on this VA140 or AGET SRS, one FEC covers 8 ASIC (VA140) cards handling 512 detector channels, or 4 ASIC (AGET) cards handling 256 detector channels. More FECs can be assembled in chassis to handle thousands of detector channels.

A Coherent Integration Method Based on Radon Non-uniform FRFT for Random Pulse Repetition Interval (RPRI) Radar

To solve the range cell migration (RCM) and spectrum spread during the integration time induced by the motion of a target, this paper proposes a new coherent integration method based on Radon non-uniform FRFT (NUFRFT) for random pulse repetition interval (RPRI) radar. In this method, RCM is eliminated via searching in the motion parameters space and the spectrum spread is resolved by using NUFRFT. Comparisons with other popular methods, moving target detection (MTD), Radon-Fourier transform (RFT), and Radon-Fractional Fourier Transform (RFRFT) are performed. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can detect the moving target even in low SNR scenario and is superior to the other two methods.

A New Parameter Estimation Algorithm Based on Sub-band Dual Frequency Conjugate LVT

A new parameter estimation algorithm, known as Sub-band Dual Frequency Conjugate LVT (SDFC-LVT), is proposed for the ground moving targets. This algorithm first constructs two sub-band signals with different central frequencies. After that, the two signals are shifted by different values in frequency domain and a new signal is constructed by multiplying one with the conjugate of the other. Finally, Keystone transform and LVT operation are performed on the constructed signal to attain the estimates. The cross-term and the performance of the proposed method are analyzed in detail. Since the equivalent carrier frequency is reduced greatly, the proposed method is capable of obtaining the accurate parameter estimates and resolving the problem of ambiguity which invalidates Keystone transform. It is search-free and can compensate the range walk of multiple targets simultaneously, thereby reducing the computational burden. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by both simulated and real data.

On solutions of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with constant energy and enstrophy

It is not yet known if the global attractor of the space periodic 2D Navier-Stokes equations contains nonstationary solutions $u(x,t)$ such that their energy and enstrophy per unit mass are constant for every $t \in (-\infty, \infty)$. The study of the properties of such solutions was initiated in \cite{CMM13}, where, due to the hypothetical existence of such solutions, they were called "ghost solutions". In this work, we introduce and study geometric structures shared by all ghost solutions. This study led us to consider a subclass of ghost solutions for which those geometric structures have a supplementary stability property. In particular, we show that the wave vectors of the active modes of this subclass of ghost solutions must satisfy certain supplementary constraints. We also found a computational way to check for the existence of these ghost solutions.

On the emergence of the Navier-Stokes-$α$ model for turbulent channel flows

In a series of papers (see \cite{CDT02} and the pertinent references therein) the 3D Navier-Stokes-$α$ model were shown to be a useful complement to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations; and in particular, to be a good Reynolds version of the latter equations. In this work, we introduce a simple Reynolds averaging which, due to the wall roughness, transforms the Navier-Stokes equations into the Navier-Stokes-$α$ model.

Parameter Estimation of Ground Moving Targets Based on SKT-DLVT Processing

It is well known that the motion of a ground moving target may induce the range cell migration, spectrum spread and velocity ambiguity during the imaging time, which makes the image smeared. To eliminate the influence of these factors on image focusing, a novel method for parameter estimation of ground moving targets, known as SKT-DLVT, is proposed in this paper. In this method, the segmental keystone transform (SKT) is used to correct the range walk of targets simultaneously, and a new transform, namely, Doppler Lv's transform (LVT) is applied on the azimuth signal to estimate the parameters. Theoretical analysis confirms that no interpolation is needed for the proposed method and the targets can be well focused within limited searching range of the ambiguity number. The proposed method is capable of obtaining the accurate parameter estimates efficiently in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenario with low computational burden and memory cost, making it suitable to be applied in memory-limited and real-time processing systems. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by both simulated and real data.

Measure synchronization in a two-species bosonic Josephson junction

Measure synchronization (MS) in a two-species bosonic Josephson junction (BJJ) is studied based on semi-classical theory. Six different scenarios for MS, including two in the Josephson oscillation regime (0 phase mode) and four in the self-trapping regime ($π$ phase mode), have been clearly shown. Systematic investigations of the common features behind these different scenarios have been performed. We show that the average energies of the two species merge at the MS transition point. The scaling of the power law near the MS transition has been verified, and the critical exponent is 1/2 for all of the different scenarios for MS. We also illustrate MS in a three-dimensional phase space; from this illustration, more detailed information on the dynamical process can be obtained. Particularly, by analyzing the Poincare sections with changing interspecies interactions, we find that the two-species BJJ exhibits separatrix crossing behavior at MS transition point, and such behavior depicts the general mechanism behind the different scenarios for the MS transitions. The new critical behavior found in a two-species BJJ is expected to be found in real systems of atomic Bose gases.
