Convergence of a mobile data assimilation scheme for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations

We introduce a localized version of the nudging data assimilation algorithm for the periodic 2D Navier-Stokes equations in which observations are confined (i.e., localized) to a window that moves across the entire domain along a predetermined path at a given speed. We prove that, if the movement is fast enough, then the algorithm perfectly synchronizes with a reference solution. The analysis suggests an informed scheme in which the subdomain moves according to a region where the error is dominant is optimal. Numerical simulations are presented that compare the efficacy of movement that follows a regular pattern, one guided by the dominant error, and one that is random.

Mesh-Free Interpolant Observables for Continuous Data Assimilation

This paper considers a nudging-based scheme for data assimilation for the two-dimensional (2D) Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) with periodic boundary conditions and studies the synchronization of the signal produced by this algorithm with the true signal, to which the observations correspond, in all higher-order Sobolev topologies. This work complements previous results in the literature where conditions were identified under which synchronization is guaranteed either with respect to only the $H^1$--topology, in the case of general observables, or to the analytic Gevrey topology, in the case of spectral observables. To accommodate the property of synchronization in the stronger topologies, the framework of general interpolant observable operators, originally introduced by Azouani, Olson, and Titi, is expanded to a far richer class of operators. A significant effort is dedicated to the development of this more expanded framework, specifically, their basic approximation properties, the identification of subclasses of such operators relevant to obtaining synchronization, as well as the detailed relation between the structure of these operators and the system regarding the syncrhonization property. One of the main features of this framework is its "mesh-free" aspect, which allows the observational data itself to dictate the subdivision of the domain. Lastly, estimates for the radius of the absorbing ball of the 2D NSE in all higher-order Sobolev norms are obtained, thus properly generalizing previously known bounds; such estimates are required for establishing the synchronization property of the algorithm in the higher-order topologies.

Continuous Data Assimilation for the Three Dimensional Navier-Stokes Equations

In this paper, we provide conditions, \emph{based solely on the observed data}, for the global well-posedness, regularity and convergence of the Azouni-Olson-Titi data assimilation algorithm (AOT algorithm) for a Leray-Hopf weak solutions of the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations (3D NSE). The aforementioned conditions on the observations, which in this case comprise either of \emph{modal} or \emph{volume element observations}, are automatically satisfied for solutions that are globally regular and are uniformly bounded in the $H^1$-norm. However, neither regularity nor uniqueness is necessary for the efficacy of the AOT algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such rigorous analysis of the AOT data assimilation algorithm for the 3D NSE.

Data assimilation for the Navier-Stokes equations using local observables

We develop, analyze, and test an approximate, global data assimilation/synchronization algorithm based on purely local observations for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations on the torus. We prove that, for any error threshold, if the reference flow is analytic with sufficiently large analyticity radius, then it can be recovered within that threshold. Numerical computations are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, as well as variants with data on moving subdomains. In particular, we demonstrate numerically that machine precision synchronization is achieved for mobile data collected from a small fraction of the domain.

Error Estimates for Deep Learning Methods in Fluid Dynamics

In this study, we provide error estimates and stability analysis of deep learning techniques for certain partial differential equations including the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. In particular, we obtain explicit error estimates (in suitable norms) for the solution computed by optimizing a loss function in a Deep Neural Network (DNN) approximation of the solution, with a fixed complexity.

Cross-Chemotaxis System Derived from an Atherosclerotic Plaque Model

In modeling the inflammatory response to a lesion in an artery wall, there are a number of chemotactic mechanisms going on within the wall layer that lead to an arterial plaque. We introduce a rather reduced model of these dynamic processes, but the focus of this paper is a subsystem of the full model system that has independent interest. Namely, the system here consists of two cell densities, each producing a chemical that is a chemoattractant for the other cell type. Then we prove positivity, local and global existence, and discuss some qualitative behavior of solutions.

On the Attractor for the Semi-Dissipative Boussinesq Equations

In this article, we study the long time behavior of solutions of a variant of the Boussinesq system in which the equation for the velocity is parabolic while the equation for the temperature is hyperbolic. We prove that the system has a global attractor which retains some of the properties of the global attractors for the 2D and 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, this attractor contains infinitely many invariant manifolds in which several universal properties of the Batchelor, Kraichnan, Leith theory of turbulence are potentially present.

Gevrey regularity for a class of dissipative equations with analytic nonlinearity

In this paper, we establish Gevrey class regularity of solutions to a class of dissipative equations with an analytic nonlinearity in the whole space. This generalizes the results of Ferrari and Titi in the periodic space case with initial data in $L^2-$based Sobolev spaces to the $L^p$ setting and in the whole space. Our generalization also includes considering rougher initial data, in negative Sobolev spaces in some cases including the Navier-Stokes and the subcritical quasi-geostrophic equations, and allowing the dissipation operator to be a fractional Laplacian. Moreover, we derive global (in time) estimates in Gevrey norms which yields decay of higher order derivatives which are optimal. Applications include (temporal) decay of solutions in higher Sobolev norms for a large class of equations including the Navier-Stokes equations, the subcritical quasi-geostrophic equations, nonlinear heat equations with fractional dissipation, a variant of the Burgers' equation with a cubic or higher order nonlinearity, and the generalized Cahn-Hilliard equation. The decay results for the last three cases seem to be new while our approach provides an alternate proof for the recently obtained $L^p\, (1<p<2)$ decay result for the Navier-Stokes equations by Bae, Biswas and Tadmor. These applications follow from our global Gevrey regularity result for initial data in \emph{critical spaces} with low regularity.

Analyticity of the Subcritical and Critical Quasi-Geostrophic equations in Besov Spaces

We establish analyticity of the subcritical and critical quasi-geostrophic equations in critical Besov spaces. The main method is so-called Gevrey estimates, which is motivated by the work of Foias and Temam. We show that mild solutions θ(t), are Gevrey regular, i.e. they satisfy the estimate \sup_{t>0}\|e^{αt^{1/γ}Λ_1}θ(t)\|_{\cap L}<\infty. for a suitably chosen α>0 and a scaling invariant Besov space {\cap L}.

Dissipation vs. quadratic nonlinearity: from a priori energy bound to higher-order regularizing effect

We consider a rather general class of evolutionary PDEs involving dissipation (of possibly fractional order), which competes with quadratic nonlinearities on the regularity of the overall equation. This includes as prototype models, Burgers' equation, the Navier-Stokes equations, the surface quasi-geostrophic equations and the Keller-Segel model for chemotaxis. Here we establish a Petrowsky type parabolic estimate of such equations which entail a precise time decay of higher-order Sobolev norms for this class of equations. To this end, we introduce as a main new tool, an "infinite order energy functional", E(t): = Σ_n α_n t^n |(-Δ)^{nθ/2} u(*,t)|_{H^{β_c}} for appropriate critical regularity index β_c. It captures the regularizing effect of all higher order derivatives of u(*,t), by proving --- for a carefully, problem-dependent choice of weights {α_n}, that E(t) is non-increasing in time.

Dissipative length scale estimates for turbulent flows - a Wiener algebra approach

In this paper, a lower bound estimate on the uniform radius of spatial analyticity is established for solutions to the incompressible, forced Navier-Stokes system on an n-torus. This estimate improves or matches previously known estimates provided that certain bounds on the initial data are satisfied. It is argued that for 2D or 3D turbulent flows, the initial data is guaranteed to satisfy these hypothesized bounds on a significant portion of the 2D global attractor or the 3D weak attractor. In these scenarios, the estimate obtained for 3D generalizes and improves upon that of [Doering-Titi], while in 2D, the estimate matches the best known one found in [Kukavica]. A key feature in the approach taken here is the choice of the Wiener algebra as the phase space, i.e., the Banach algebra of functions with absolutely convergent Fourier series, whose structure is suitable for the use of the so-called Gevrey norms.

Gevrey regularity for the supercritical quasi-geostrophic equation

In this paper, following the techniques of Foias and Temam, we establish suitable Gevrey class regularity of solutions to the supercritical quasi-geostrophic equations in the whole space, with initial data in "critical" Sobolev spaces. Moreover, the Gevrey class that we obtain is "near optimal" and as a corollary, we obtain temporal decay rates of higher order Sobolev norms of the solutions. Unlike the Navier-Stokes or the subcritical quasi-geostrophic equations, the low dissipation poses a difficulty in establishing Gevrey regularity. A new commutator estimate in Gevrey classes, involving the dyadic Littlewood-Paley operators, is established that allow us to exploit the cancellation properties of the equation and circumvent this difficulty.

On Gevrey Regularity of the Supercritical SQG equation in Critical Besov Spaces

In this paper we show that the solution of the supercrti- cal surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation, starting from initial data in homogeneous critical Besov spaces belong to a subanalytic Gevrey class. In particular, we improve upon the result of Dong and Li in [26], where they showed that the solutions of Chen-Miao-Zhang (cf. [11]) are classical solutions. We extend the approach of Biswas (cf. [7]) to critical, L^p -based Besov spaces, and adapt the point of view of Lemarie- Rieusset (cf. [36]), who treated the operator arising from applying the analytic Gevrey operator to a product of analytic functions as a bilinear multiplier operator. In order to obtain L^p bounds, we prove that our bilinear multiplier operator is of Marcinkiewicz type, and show that due to additional localizations inherited from working in Besov spaces, this condition implies boundedness.

Multivariable generalizations of the Schur class: positive kernel characterization and transfer function realization

The operator-valued Schur-class is defined to be the set of holomorphic functions $S$ mapping the unit disk into the space of contraction operators between two Hilbert spaces. There are a number of alternate characterizations: the operator of multiplication by $S$ defines a contraction operator between two Hardy Hilbert spaces, $S$ satisfies a von Neumann inequality, a certain operator-valued kernel associated with $S$ is positive-definite, and $S$ can be realized as the transfer function of a dissipative (or even conservative) discrete-time linear input/state/output linear system. Various multivariable generalizations of this class have appeared recently, one of the most encompassing being that of Muhly and Solel where the unit disk is replaced by the strict unit ball of the elements of a dual correspondence $E^σ$ associated with a $W^{*}$-correspondence $E$ over a $W^{*}$-algebra $\cA$ together with a $*$-representation $σ$ of $\cA$. The main new point which we add here is the introduction of the notion of reproducing kernel Hilbert correspondence and identification of the Muhly-Solel Hardy spaces as reproducing kernel Hilbert correspondences associated with a completely positive analogue of the classical Szegö kernel. In this way we are able to make the analogy between the Muhly-Solel Schur class and the classical Schur class more complete. We also illustrate the theory by specializing it to some well-studied special cases; in some instances there result new kinds of realization theorems.
