Illuminating the lantern: coherent, spectro-polarimetric characterisation of a multimode converter

While photonic lanterns efficiently and uniquely map a set of input modes to single-mode outputs (or vice versa), the optical mode transfer matrix of any particular fabricated device cannot be constrained at the design stage due to manufacturing imperfections. Accurate knowledge of the mapping enables complex sensing or beam control applications that leverage multimode conversion. In this work, we present a characterisation system to directly measure the electric field from a photonic lantern using digital off-axis holography, following its evolution over a 73 nm range near 1550 nm and in two orthogonal, linear polarisations. We provide the first multi-wavelength, polarisation decomposed characterisation of the principal modes of a photonic lantern. Performance of our testbed is validated on a single-mode fibre then harnessed to characterise a 19-port, multicore fibre fed photonic lantern. We uncover the typical wavelength scale at which the modal mapping evolves and measure the relative dispersion in the device, finding significant differences with idealised simulations. In addition to detailing the system, we also share the empirical mode transfer matrices, enabling future work in astrophotonic design, computational imaging, device fabrication feedback loops and beam shaping.

Blockchain as a Service: A Decentralized and Secure Computing Paradigm

Thanks to the advances in machine learning, data-driven analysis tools have become valuable solutions for various applications. However, there still remain essential challenges to develop effective data-driven methods because of the need to acquire a large amount of data and to have sufficient computing power to handle the data. In many instances these challenges are addressed by relying on a dominant cloud computing vendor, but, although commercial cloud vendors provide valuable platforms for data analytics, they can suffer from a lack of transparency, security, and privacy-perservation. Furthermore, reliance on cloud servers prevents applying big data analytics in environments where the computing power is scattered. To address these challenges, a decentralize, secure, and privacy-preserving computing paradigm is proposed to enable an asynchronized cooperative computing process amongst scattered and untrustworthy computing nodes that may have limited computing power and computing intelligence. This paradigm is designed by exploring blockchain, decentralized learning, homomorphic encryption, and software defined networking(SDN) techniques. The performance of the proposed paradigm is evaluated via different scenarios in the simulation section.

Spectral Attention-Driven Intelligent Target Signal Identification on a Wideband Spectrum

This paper presents a spectral attention-driven reinforcement learning based intelligent method for effective and efficient detection of important signals in a wideband spectrum. In the work presented in this paper, it is assumed that the modulation technique used is available as a priori knowledge of the targeted important signal. The proposed spectral attention-driven intelligent method is consists of two main components, a spectral correlation function (SCF) based spectral visualization scheme and a spectral attention-driven reinforcement learning mechanism that adaptively selects the spectrum range and implements the intelligent signal detection. Simulations illustrate that the proposed method can achieve high accuracy of signal detection while observation of spectrum is limited to few ranges via effectively selecting the spectrum ranges to be observed. Furthermore, the proposed spectral attention-driven machine learning method can lead to an efficient adaptive intelligent spectrum sensor designs in cognitive radio (CR) receivers.
