Bgolearn: a Unified Bayesian Optimization Framework for Accelerating Materials Discovery

Efficient exploration of vast compositional and processing spaces is essential for accelerated materials discovery. Bayesian optimization (BO) provides a principled strategy for identifying optimal materials with minimal experiments, yet its adoption in materials science is hindered by implementation complexity and limited domain-specific tools. Here, we present Bgolearn, a comprehensive Python framework that makes BO accessible and practical for materials research through an intuitive interface, robust algorithms, and materials-oriented workflows. Bgolearn supports both single-objective and multi-objective Bayesian optimization with multiple acquisition functions (e.g., expected improvement, upper confidence bound, probability of improvement, and expected hypervolume improvement etc.), diverse surrogate models (including Gaussian processes, random forests, and gradient boosting etc.), and bootstrap-based uncertainty quantification. Benchmark studies show that Bgolearn reduces the number of required experiments by 40-60% compared with random search, grid search, and genetic algorithms, while maintaining comparable or superior solution quality. Its effectiveness is demonstrated not only through the studies presented in this paper, such as the identification of maximum-elastic-modulus triply periodic minimal surface structures, ultra-high-hardness high-entropy alloys, and high-strength, high-ductility medium-Mn steels, but also by numerous publications that have proven its impact in material discovery. With a modular architecture that integrates seamlessly into existing materials workflows and a graphical user interface (BgoFace) that removes programming barriers, Bgolearn establishes a practical and reliable platform for Bayesian optimization in materials science, and is openly available at https://github.com/Bin-Cao/Bgolearn.

Backward doubly stochastic differential equations and SPDEs with quadratic growth

In this paper, we initiate the study of backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDEs, for short) with quadratic growth. The existence, comparison, and stability results for one-dimensional BDSDEs are proved when the generator $f(t,Y,Z)$ grows in $Z$ quadratically and the terminal value is bounded, by introducing some new ideas. Moreover, in this framework, we use BDSDEs to give a probabilistic representation for the solutions of semilinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs, for short) in Sobolev spaces, and use it to prove the existence and uniqueness of such SPDEs, thus extending the nonlinear Feynman-Kac formula.

General Indefinite Backward Stochastic Linear-Quadratic Optimal Control Problems

A general backward stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problem is studied, in which both the state equation and the cost functional contain the nonhomogeneous terms. The main feature of the problem is that the weighting matrices in the cost functional are allowed to be indefinite and cross-product terms in the control and the state processes are present. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the problem are obtained, and a characterization of the optimal control in terms of forward-backward stochastic differential equations is derived. By a Riccati equation approach, a general procedure for constructing optimal controls is developed and the value function is obtained explicitly.

Input-to-State Stable Neural Ordinary Differential Equations with Applications to Transient Modeling of Circuits

This paper proposes a class of neural ordinary differential equations parametrized by provably input-to-state stable continuous-time recurrent neural networks. The model dynamics are defined by construction to be input-to-state stable (ISS) with respect to an ISS-Lyapunov function that is learned jointly with the dynamics. We use the proposed method to learn cheap-to-simulate behavioral models for electronic circuits that can accurately reproduce the behavior of various digital and analog circuits when simulated by a commercial circuit simulator, even when interconnected with circuit components not encountered during training. We also demonstrate the feasibility of learning ISS-preserving perturbations to the dynamics for modeling degradation effects due to circuit aging.

Linear quadratic leader-follower stochastic differential games for mean-field switching diffusions

In this paper, we consider a linear quadratic (LQ) leader-follower stochastic differential game for regime switching diffusions with mean-field interactions. One of the salient features of this paper is that conditional mean-field terms are included in the state equation and cost functionals. Based on stochastic maximum principles (SMPs), the follower's problem and the leader's problem are solved sequentially and an open-loop Stackelberg equilibrium is obtained. Further, with the help of the so-called four-step scheme, the corresponding Hamiltonian systems for the two players are decoupled and then the open-loop Stackelberg equilibrium admits a state feedback representation if some new-type Riccati equations are solvable.

On the empty balls of a critical super-Brownian motion

Let $\{X_t\}_{t\geq0}$ be a $d$-dimensional critical super-Brownian motion started from a Poisson random measure whose intensity is the Lebesgue measure. Denote by $R_t:=\sup\{u>0: X_t(\{x\in\mathbb{R}^d:|x|< u\})=0\}$ the radius of the largest empty ball centered at the origin of $X_t$. In this work, we prove that for $r>0$, $$\lim_{t\to\infty}\mathbb{P}\left(\frac{R_t}{t^{(1/d)\wedge(3-d)^+}}\geq r\right)=e^{-A_d(r)},$$ where $A_d(r)$ satisfies $\lim_{r\to\infty}\frac{A_d(r)}{r^{|d-2|+d\ind_{\{d=2\}}}}=C$ for some $C\in(0,\infty)$ depending only on $d$.

On the extinction-extinguishing dichotomy for a stochastic Lotka-Volterra type population dynamical system

We study a two-dimensional process $(X, Y)$ arising as the unique nonnegative solution to a pair of stochastic differential equations driven by independent Brownian motions and compensated spectrally positive Lévy random measures. Both processes $X$ and $Y$ can be identified as continuous-state nonlinear branching processes where the evolution of $Y$ is negatively affected by $X$. Assuming that process $X$ extinguishes, i.e. it converges to $0$ but never reaches $0$ in finite time, and process $Y$ converges to $0$, we identify rather sharp conditions under which the process $Y$ exhibits, respectively, one of the following behaviors: extinction with probability one, extinguishing with probability one or both extinction and extinguishing occurring with strictly positive probabilities.

Solvability of a class of mean-field BSDEs with quadratic growth

In this paper, we study the multi-dimensional mean-field backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs, for short) with quadratic growth. Under small terminal value, the existence and uniqueness are proved for the multi-dimensional situation when the generator f(t,Y,E[Y],Z,E[Z]) is of quadratic growth with respect to the last four items, using some new methods. Besides, a kind of comparison theorem is obtained.

Stochastic Linear Quadratic Optimal Control Problems with Random Coefficients and Markovian Regime Switching System

This paper thoroughly investigates stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problems with the Markovian regime switching system, where the coefficients of the state equation and the weighting matrices of the cost functional are random. We prove the solvability of the stochastic Riccati equation under the uniform convexity condition and obtain the closed-loop representation of the open-loop optimal control using the unique solvability of the corresponding stochastic Riccati equation. Moreover, by applying Itô's formula with jumps, we get a representation of the cost functional on a Hilbert space, characterized as the adapted solutions of some forward-backward stochastic differential equations. We show that the necessary condition of the open-loop optimal control is the convexity of the cost functional, and the sufficient condition of the open-loop optimal control is the uniform convexity of the cost functional. In addition, we study the properties of the stochastic value flow of the stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problem. Finally, as an application, we present a continuous-time mean-variance portfolio selection problem and prove its unique solvability.

Stochastic Linear-Quadratic Optimal Control with Partial Observation

The paper studies a class of quadratic optimal control problems for partially observable linear dynamical systems. In contrast to the full information case, the control is required to be adapted to the filtration generated by the observation system, which in turn is influenced by the control. The variation method fails in this case due to the fact that the filtration is not fixed. To overcome the difficulty, we use the orthogonal decomposition of the state process to write the cost functional as the sum of two parts: one is a functional of the control and the filtering process and the other part is independent of the choice of the control. The first part possesses a mathematical structure similar to the full information problem. By completing the square, it is shown that the optimal control is given by a feedback representation via the filtering process. The optimal value is also obtained explicitly.

Stochastic maximum principle for weighted mean-field system

We study the optimal control problem for a weighted mean-field system. A new feature of the control problem is that the coefficients depend on the state process as well as its weighted measure and the control variable. By applying variational technique, we establish a stochastic maximum principle. As an application, we investigate the optimal premium policy of an insurance firm for asset-liability management problem.

A strange metal in a bosonic system

Fermi liquid theory forms the basis for our understanding of the majority of metals, which is manifested in the description of transport properties that the electrical resistivity goes as temperature squared in the limit of zero temperature. However, the observations of strange metal states in various quantum materials, notably high-temperature superconductors, bring this spectacularly successful theoretical framework into crisis. When electron scattering rate 1/τ hits its limit, kBT/{\hbar} where {\hbar} is the reduced Planck's constant, T represents absolute temperature and kB denotes Boltzmann's constant, Planckian dissipation occurs and lends strange metals a surprising link to black holes, gravity, and quantum information theory. Here, we show the characteristic signature of strange metallicity arising unprecedentedly in a bosonic system. Our nanopatterned YBa2Cu3O7-δ(YBCO) film arrays reveal T-linear resistance as well as B-linear magnetoresistance over an extended temperature and magnetic field range in a quantum critical region in the phase diagram. Moreover, the slope of the T-linear resistance α_cp appears bounded by α_cp {\approx} h/2e^2 [1/T]_c^onset where T_c^onset is the temperature at which Cooper pairs form, intimating a common scale-invariant transport mechanism corresponding to Planckian dissipation. In contrast to fermionic systems where the temperature and magnetic field dependent scattering rates combine in quadrature of {\hbar}/τ {\approx} {\sqrt} (((k_B T)^2+(μ_B B)^2)), both terms linearly combine in the present bosonic system, i.e. {\hbar}/τ {\approx} (k_B T+[γμ]_B B), where γ is a constant. By extending the reach of strange metal phenomenology to a bosonic system, our results suggest that there is a fundamental principle governing their transport which transcends particle statistics.

Mutually interacting superprocesses with migration

A system of mutually interacting superprocesses with migration is constructed as the limit of a sequence of branching particle systems arising from population models. The uniqueness in law of the superprocesses is established using the pathwise uniqueness of a system of stochastic partial differential equations with non-Lipschitz coefficients, which is satisfied by the corresponding system of distribution-function-valued processes.

Machine Learning of Mechanical Properties of Steels

The mechanical properties are essential for structural materials. The analyzed 360 data on four mechanical properties of steels, viz. fatigue strength, tensile strength, fracture strength, and hardness, are selected from the NIMS database, including carbon steels, and low-alloy steels. Five machine learning algorithms were applied on the 360 data to predict the mechanical properties and random forest regression illustrates the best performance. The feature selection was conducted by random forest and symbolic regressions, leading to the four most important features of tempering temperature, and alloying elements of carbon, chromium, and molybdenum to the mechanical properties of steels. Besides, mathematic expressions were generated via symbolic regression, and the expressions explicitly predict how each of the four mechanical properties varies quantitatively with the four most important features. The present work demonstrates the great potential of symbolic regression in the discovery of novel advanced materials.

In this paper we establish the strong existence, pathwise uniqueness and a comparison theorem to a stochastic partial differential equation driven by Gaussian colored noise with non-Lipschitz drift, Hölder continuous diffusion coefficients and the spatial domain in finite interval, $[0,1]$, and with Dirichlet, Neumann or mixed nonhomogeneous random conditions imposed on the endpoints. The Hölder continuity of the solution both in time and in space variables is also studied.

Towards Flexible Wireless Charging for Medical Implants Using Distributed Antenna System

This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of In-N-Out, a software-hardware solution for far-field wireless power transfer. In-N-Out can continuously charge a medical implant residing in deep tissues at near-optimal beamforming power, even when the implant moves around inside the human body. To accomplish this, we exploit the unique energy ball pattern of distributed antenna array and devise a backscatter-assisted beamforming algorithm that can concentrate RF energy on a tiny spot surrounding the medical implant. Meanwhile, the power levels on other body parts stay in low level, reducing the risk of overheating. We prototype In-N-Out on 21 software-defined radios and a printed circuit board (PCB). Extensive experiments demonstrate that In-N-Out achieves 0.37~mW average charging power inside a 10~cm-thick pork belly, which is sufficient to wirelessly power a range of commercial medical devices. Our head-to-head comparison with the state-of-the-art approach shows that In-N-Out achieves 5.4$\times$--18.1$\times$ power gain when the implant is stationary, and 5.3$\times$--7.4$\times$ power gain when the implant is in motion.

"Virus hunting" using radial distance weighted discrimination

Motivated by the challenge of using DNA-seq data to identify viruses in human blood samples, we propose a novel classification algorithm called "Radial Distance Weighted Discrimination" (or Radial DWD). This classifier is designed for binary classification, assuming one class is surrounded by the other class in very diverse radial directions, which is seen to be typical for our virus detection data. This separation of the 2 classes in multiple radial directions naturally motivates the development of Radial DWD. While classical machine learning methods such as the Support Vector Machine and linear Distance Weighted Discrimination can sometimes give reasonable answers for a given data set, their generalizability is severely compromised because of the linear separating boundary. Radial DWD addresses this challenge by using a more appropriate (in this particular case) spherical separating boundary. Simulations show that for appropriate radial contexts, this gives much better generalizability than linear methods, and also much better than conventional kernel based (nonlinear) Support Vector Machines, because the latter methods essentially use much of the information in the data for determining the shape of the separating boundary. The effectiveness of Radial DWD is demonstrated for real virus detection.

A partially observed non-zero sum differential game of forward-backward stochastic differential equations and its application in finance

In this article, we concern a kind of partially observed non-zero sum stochastic differential game based on forward and backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs). It is required that each player has his own observation equation, and the corresponding open-loop Nash equilibrium control is required to adapted to the filtration that the observation process generated. To find this open-loop Nash equilibrium point, we prove the maximum principle as a necessary condition of the existence of this point, and give a verification theorem as a sufficient condition to verify it is the real open-loop Nash equilibrium point. Combined this with reality, a financial investment problem is raised. We can obtain the explicit observable investment strategy by using stochastic filtering theory and the results above.

Detection and localization of continuous gravitational waves with pulsar timing arrays: the role of pulsar terms

A pulsar timing array is a Galactic-scale detector of nanohertz gravitational waves (GWs). Its target signals contain two components: the `Earth term' and the `pulsar term' corresponding to GWs incident on the Earth and pulsar respectively. In this work we present a Frequentist method for the detection and localization of continuous waves that takes into account the pulsar term and is significantly faster than existing methods. We investigate the role of pulsar terms by comparing a full-signal search with an Earth-term-only search for non-evolving black hole binaries. By applying the method to synthetic data sets, we find that (i) a full-signal search can slightly improve the detection probability (by about five percent); (ii) sky localization is biased if only Earth terms are searched for and the inclusion of pulsar terms is critical to remove such a bias; (iii) in the case of strong detections (with signal-to-noise ratio $\gtrsim$ 30), it may be possible to improve pulsar distance estimation through GW measurements.

Linear Quadratic Optimal Control Problems for Mean-Field Backward Stochastic Differential Equations

This paper is concerned with linear quadratic optimal control problems for mean-field backward stochastic differential equations (MF-BSDEs, for short) with deterministic coefficients. The optimality system, which is a linear mean-field forward-backward stochastic differential equation with constraint, is obtained by a variational method. By decoupling the optimality system, two coupled Riccati equations and an MF-BSDE are derived. It turns out that the coupled two Riccati equations are uniquely solvable. Then a complete and explicit representation is obtained for the optimal control.

Spin-orbit coupling control of anisotropy, ground state and frustration in 5d2 Sr2MgOsO6

The influence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the physical properties of the 5d2 system Sr2MgOsO6 is probed via a combination of magnetometry, specific heat measurements, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and density functional theory calculations. Although a significant degree of frustration is expected, we find that Sr2MgOsO6 orders in a type I antiferromagnetic structure at the remarkably high temperature of 108 K. The measurements presented allow for the first accurate quantification of the size of the magnetic moment in a 5d2 system of 0.60(2) muB - a significantly reduced moment from the expected value for such a system. Furthermore, significant anisotropy is identified via a spin excitation gap, and we confirm by first principles calculations that SOC not only provides the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, but also plays a crucial role in determining both the ground state magnetic order and the size of the local moment in this compound. Through comparison to Sr2ScOsO6, it is demonstrated that SOC-induced anisotropy has the ability to relieve frustration in 5d2 systems relative to their 5d3 counterparts, providing an explanation of the high TN found in Sr2MgOsO6.

We establish the irreducibility of stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation with $α$-stable noises by a maximal inequality and solving a control problem. As applications, we prove that the system converges to its equilibrium measure with exponential rate under a topology stronger than total variation and obeys the moderate deviation principle by constructing some Lyapunov test functions.

Large deviation principle of occupation measure for stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by $α$-stable noises

We establish a large deviation principle for the occupation measure of the stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by $α$-stable noises. The proof is based on a hyper-exponential recurrence criterion. Our result indicates a phenomenon that strong dissipation beats heavy tailed noises to produce a large deviation, it seems to us that this phenomenon has not been reported in the known literatures.

Leader-Follower Stochastic Differential Game with Asymmetric Information and Applications

This paper is concerned with a leader-follower stochastic differential game with asymmetric information, where the information available to the follower is based on some sub-$σ$-algebra of that available to the leader. Such kind of game problem has wide applications in finance, economics and management engineering such as newsvendor problems, cooperative advertising and pricing problems. Stochastic maximum principles and verification theorems with partial information are obtained, to represent the Stackelberg equilibrium. As applications, a linear-quadratic leader-follower stochastic differential game with asymmetric information is studied. It is shown that the open-loop Stackelberg equilibrium admits a state feedback representation if some system of Riccati equations is solvable.

The Large Deviation Principle and Steady-state Fluctuation Theorem for the Entropy Production Rate of a Stochastic Process in Magnetic Fields

Fluctuation theorem is one of the major achievements in the field of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics during the past two decades. Steady-state fluctuation theorem of sample entropy production rate in terms of large deviation principle for diffusion processes have not been rigorously proved yet due to technical difficulties. Here we give a proof for the steady-state fluctuation theorem of a diffusion process in magnetic fields, with explicit expressions of the free energy function and rate function. The proof is based on the Karhunen-Loéve expansion of complex-valued Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.

Annealed asymptotics for Brownian motion of renormalized potential in mobile random medium

Motivated by the study of the directed polymer model with mobile Poissonian traps or catalysts and the stochastic parabolic Anderson model with time dependent potential, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of \[\mathbb{E}\otimes\mathbb{E}_0\exp\left\{\pmθ\int^t_0\bar{V}(s,B_s)ds\right\}\qquad (t\to\infty)\] where $þ>0$ is a constant, $\overline{V}$ is the renormalized Poisson potential of the form \[\overline{V}(s,x)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}\frac{1}{|y-x|^p}\left(ω_s(dy)-dy\right),\] and $ω_s$ is the measure-valued process consisting of independent Brownian particles whose initial positions form a Poisson random measure on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with Lebesgue measure as its intensity. Different scaling limits are obtained according to the parameter $p$ and dimension $d$. For the logarithm of the negative exponential moment, the range of $\frac{d}{2}<p<d$ is divided into 5 regions with various scaling rates of the orders $t^{d/p}$, $t^{3/2}$, $t^{(4-d-2p)/2}$, $t\log t$ and $t$, respectively. For the positive exponential moment, the limiting behavior is studied according to the parameters $p$ and $d$ in three regions. In the sub-critical region ($p<2$), the double logarithm of the exponential moment has a rate of $t$. In the critical region ($p=2$), it has different behavior over two parts decided according to the comparison of $θ$ with the best constant in the Hardy inequality. In the super-critical region $(p>2)$, the exponential moments become infinite for all $t>0$.

Marginal and simultaneous predictive classification using stratified graphical models

An inductive probabilistic classification rule must generally obey the principles of Bayesian predictive inference, such that all observed and unobserved stochastic quantities are jointly modeled and the parameter uncertainty is fully acknowledged through the posterior predictive distribution. Several such rules have been recently considered and their asymptotic behavior has been characterized under the assumption that the observed features or variables used for building a classifier are conditionally independent given a simultaneous labeling of both the training samples and those from an unknown origin. Here we extend the theoretical results to predictive classifiers acknowledging feature dependencies either through graphical models or sparser alternatives defined as stratified graphical models. We also show through experimentation with both synthetic and real data that the predictive classifiers based on stratified graphical models have consistently best accuracy compared with the predictive classifiers based on either conditionally independent features or on ordinary graphical models.

Warburg Effect due to Exposure to Different Types of Radiation

Cancer cells maintain a high level of aerobic glycolysis (the Warburg effect), which is associated with their rapid proliferation. Many studies have reported that the suppression of glycolysis and activation of oxidative phosphorylation can repress the growth of cancer cells through regulation of key regulators. Whether Warburg effect of cancer cells could be switched by some other environmental stimulus? Herein, we report an interesting phenomenon in which cells alternated between glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration depending on the type of radiation they were exposed to. We observed enhanced glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration in HeLa cells exposed to 2-Gy X-ray and 2-Gy carbon ion radiation, respectively. This discovery may provide novel insights for tumor therapy.

The reversibility and an SPDE for the generalized Fleming-Viot Processes with mutation

The (Ξ, A)-Fleming-Viot process with mutation is a probability-measure-valued process whose moment dual is similar to that of the classical Fleming-Viot process except that the Kingman's coalescent is replaced by the Ξ-coalescent, the coalescent with simultaneous multiple collisions. We first prove the existence of such a process for general mutation generator A. We then investigate its reversibility. We also study both the weak and strong uniqueness of solution to the associated stochastic partial differential equation.

Optical tuning and ultrafast dynamics of high-temperature superconducting terahertz metamaterials

Through the integration of semiconductors or complex oxides into metal resonators, tunable metamaterials have been achieved by a change of environment using an external stimulus. Metals provide high conductivity to realize a strong resonant response in metamaterials; however, they contribute very little to the tunability. The complex conductivity in high-temperature superconducting films is highly sensitive to external perturbations, which provides new opportunities in achieving tunable metamaterials resulting directly from the resonant elements. Here we demonstrate ultrafast dynamical tuning of resonance in the terahertz (THz) frequency range in YBa_2Cu_3O_7-δ(YBCO) split-ring resonator arrays excited by near-infrared femtosecond laser pulses. The photoexcitation breaks the superconducting Cooper pairs to create the quasiparticle state. This dramatically modifies the imaginary part of the complex conductivity and consequently the metamaterial resonance in an ultrafast timescale. We observed resonance switching accompanied with a wide range frequency tuning as a function of photoexcitation fluence, which also strongly depend on the nano-scale thickness of the superconducting films. All of our experimental results are well reproduced through calculations using an analytical model, which takes into account the SRR resistance and kinetic inductance contributed from the complex conductivity of YBCO films. The theoretical calculations reveal that the increasing SRR resistance upon increasing photoexcitation fluence is responsible for the reduction of resonance strength, and both the resistance and kinetic inductance contribute to the tuning of resonance frequency.
