On the use of deep learning for phase recovery

Phase recovery (PR) refers to calculating the phase of the light field from its intensity measurements. As exemplified from quantitative phase imaging and coherent diffraction imaging to adaptive optics, PR is essential for reconstructing the refractive index distribution or topography of an object and correcting the aberration of an imaging system. In recent years, deep learning (DL), often implemented through deep neural networks, has provided unprecedented support for computational imaging, leading to more efficient solutions for various PR problems. In this review, we first briefly introduce conventional methods for PR. Then, we review how DL provides support for PR from the following three stages, namely, pre-processing, in-processing, and post-processing. We also review how DL is used in phase image processing. Finally, we summarize the work in DL for PR and outlook on how to better use DL to improve the reliability and efficiency in PR. Furthermore, we present a live-updating resource (https://github.com/kqwang/phase-recovery) for readers to learn more about PR.

Chip-integrated van der Waals PN heterojunction photodetector with low dark current and high responsivity

Two-dimensional materials are attractive for constructing high-performance photonic chip-integrated photodetectors because of their remarkable electronic and optical properties and dangling-bond-free surfaces. However, the reported chip-integrated two-dimensional material photodetectors were mainly implemented with the configuration of metal-semiconductor-metal, suffering from high dark currents and low responsivities at high operation speed. Here, we report a van der Waals PN heterojunction photodetector, composed of p-type black phosphorous and n-type molybdenum telluride, integrated on a silicon nitride waveguide. The built-in electric field of the PN heterojunction significantly suppresses the dark current and improves the responsivity. Under a bias of 1 V pointing from n-type molybdenum telluride to p-type black phosphorous, the dark current is lower than 7 nA, which is more than two orders of magnitude lower than those reported in other waveguide-integrated black phosphorus photodetectors. An intrinsic responsivity up to 577 mA/W is obtained. Remarkably, the van der Waals PN heterojunction is tunable by the electrostatic doping to further engineer its rectification and improve the photodetection, enabling an increased responsivity of 709 mA/W. Besides, the heterojunction photodetector exhibits a response bandwidth of ~1.0 GHz and a uniform photodetection over a wide spectral range, as experimentally measured from 1500 to 1630 nm. The demonstrated chip-integrated van der Waals PN heterojunction photodetector with low dark current, high responsivity and fast response has great potentials to develop high-performance on-chip photodetectors for various photonic integrated circuits based on silicon, lithium niobate, polymer, etc.

Electrically tunable second harmonic generation in atomically thin ReS2

Electrical tuning of second-order nonlinearity in optical materials is attractive to strengthen and expand the functionalities of nonlinear optical technologies, though its implementation remains elusive. Here, we report the electrically tunable second-order nonlinearity in atomically thin ReS2 flakes benefiting from their distorted 1T crystal structure and interlayer charge transfer. Enabled by the efficient electrostatic control of the few-atomic-layer ReS2, we show that second harmonic generation (SHG) can be induced in odd-number-layered ReS2 flakes which are centrosymmetric and thus without intrinsic SHG. Moreover, the SHG can be precisely modulated by the electric field, reversibly switching from almost zero to an amplitude more than one order of magnitude stronger than that of the monolayer MoS2. For the even-number-layered ReS2 flakes with the intrinsic SHG, the external electric field could be leveraged to enhance the SHG. We further perform the first-principles calculations which suggest that the modification of in-plane second-order hyperpolarizability by the redistributed interlayer-transferring charges in the distorted 1T crystal structure underlies the electrically tunable SHG in ReS2. With its active SHG tunability while using the facile electrostatic control, our work may further expand the nonlinear optoelectronic functions of two-dimensional materials for developing electrically controllable nonlinear optoelectronic devices.

High capacity topological coding based on nested vortex knots and links

Optical knots and links have attracted great attention because of their exotic topological characteristics. Recent investigations have shown that the information encoding based on optical knots could possess robust features against external perturbations. However, as a superior coding scheme, it is also necessary to achieve a high capacity, which is hard to be fulfilled by existing knot-carriers owing to the limit number of associated topological invariants. Thus, how to realize the knot-based information coding with a high capacity is a key problem to be solved. Here, we create a type of nested vortex knot, and show that it can be used to fulfill the robust information coding with a high capacity assisted by a large number of intrinsic topological invariants. In experiments, we design and fabricate metasurface holograms to generate light fields sustaining different kinds of nested vortex links. Furthermore, we verify the feasibility of the high-capacity coding scheme based on those topological optical knots. Our work opens another way to realize the robust and high capacity optical coding, which may have useful impacts on the field of information transfer and storage.

High-efficiency second-harmonic and sum-frequency generation in a silicon nitride microring integrated with few-layer GaSe

Silicon nitride (SiN) photonics platform has attributes of ultra-low linear and nonlinear propagation losses and CMOS-compatible fabrication process, promising large-scale multifunctional photonic circuits. However, the centrosymmetric nature of SiN inhibits second-order nonlinear optical responses in its photonics platform, which is desirable for developing efficient nonlinear active devices. Here, we demonstrate high-efficiency second-order nonlinear processes in SiN photonics platform by integrating a few-layer GaSe flake on a SiN microring resonator. With the pump of microwatts continuous-wave lasers, second-harmonic generation and sum-frequency generation with the conversion efficiencies of 849%/W and 123%/W, respectively, are achieved, which benefit from the ultrahigh second-order nonlinear susceptibility of GaSe, resonance enhanced GaSe-light interaction, and phase-matching condition satisfied by the mode engineering. Combining with the easy integration, the GaSe-assisted high-efficiency second-order nonlinear processes offer a new route to enriching already strong functionality of SiN photonics platform in nonlinear optics.

High-responsivity MoS$_2$ hot-electron telecom-band photodetector integrated with microring resonator

We report a high-responsive hot-electron photodetector based on the integration of an Au-MoS$_2$ junction with a silicon nitride microring resonator (MRR) for detecting telecom-band light. The coupling of the evanescent field of the silicon nitride MRR with the Au-MoS$_2$ Schottky junction region enhances the hot-electron injection efficiency. The device exhibits a high responsivity of 154.6 mA W-1 at the wavelength of 1516 nm, and the moderately uniform responsivities are obtained over the wavelength range of 1500 nm-1630 nm. This MRR-enhanced MoS2 hot-electron photodetector offers possibilities for integrated optoelectronic systems.

Strong Second Harmonic Generation from Bilayer Graphene with Symmetry Breaking by Redox-Governed Charge Doping

Missing second-order nonlinearity in centrosymmetric graphene overshadows its intriguing optical attribute. Here, we report redox-governed charge doping could effectively break the centrosymmetry of bilayer graphene (BLG), enabling a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) with a strength close to that of the well-known monolayer MoS2. Verified from control experiments with in situ electrical current annealing and electrically gate-controlled SHG, the required centrosymmetry breaking of the emerging SHG arises from the charge-doping on the bottom layer of BLG by the oxygen/water redox couple. Our results not only reveal that charge doping is an effective way to break the inversion symmetry of BLG despite its strong interlayer coupling but also indicate that SHG spectroscopy is a valid technique to probe molecular doping on two-dimensional materials.

Spontaneous imbibition in porous media: from pore scale to Darcy scale

Spontaneous imbibition has been receiving much attention due to its significance in many subsurface and industrial applications. Unveiling pore-scale wetting dynamics, and particularly its upscaling to the Darcy scale are still unresolved. In this work, we conduct image-based pore-network modeling of cocurrent spontaneous imbibition and the corresponding quasi-static imbibition, in homogeneous sintered glass beads as well as heterogeneous Estaillades. A wide range of viscosity ratios and wettability conditions are taken into account. Based on our pore-scale results, we show the influence of pore-scale heterogeneity on imbibition dynamics and nonwetting entrapment. We elucidate different pore-filling mechanisms in imbibition, which helps us understand wetting dynamics. Most importantly, we develop a non-equilibrium model for relative permeability of the wetting phase, which adequately incorporates wetting dynamics. This is crucial to the final goal of developing a two-phase imbibition model with measurable material properties such as capillary pressure and relative permeability. Finally, we propose some future work on both numerical and experimental verifications of the developed non-equilibrium permeability model.

Hybrid vector beams with non-uniform orbital angular momentum density induced by designed azimuthal polarization gradient

Based on angular amplitude modulation of orthogonal base vectors in common-path interference method, we propose an interesting type of hybrid vector beams with unprecedented azimuthal polarization gradient and demonstrate in experiment. Distinct to previously reported types, the synthetic hybrid vector beams exhibit geometrically intriguing projection tracks of angular polarization state on Poincare sphere, more than just conventional circles. More noteworthily, the designed azimuthal polarization gradients are found to be able to induce azimuthally non-uniform orbital angular momentum density, while generally uniform for circle-track cases, immersing in homogenous intensity background whatever base states are. Moreover, via tailoring relevant parameters, more special polarization mapping tracks can be handily achieved. These peculiar features may open alternative routes for new optical effects and applications.

Generation of vector beams in planar photonic crystal cavities with multiple missing-hole defects

We propose a novel method to generate vector beams in planar photonic crystal cavities with multiple missing-hole defects. Simulating the resonant modes in the cavities, we observe that the optical fields in each defect have different phase and polarization state distributions, which promise the compositions of vector beams by the scattered light from the defects. The far-field radiation patterns of the cavity modes calculated via the Sommerfeld diffraction theory present vector beams possessing hollow intensity profiles and polarization singularities. In addition, the extraction efficiencies of the vector beams from the cavities could be improved by modifying the air-holes surrounding the defects. This planar photonic crystal cavity-based vector beam generator may provide useful insights for the on-chip controlling of vector beams in their propagations and interactions with matter.

Beam steering and topological transformations driven by interactions between discrete vortex and fundamental solitons

We study coherent and incoherent interactions between discrete vortex and fundamental solitons in two-dimensional photonic lattices, presenting a new scheme for all-optical routings and topological transformations of vorticities. Due to the multi-lobe intensity and step-phase structure of the discrete vortex soliton, the coherent soliton-interactions allow both solitons to be steered into multiple different possible destination ports depending on the initial phase of the discrete fundamental soliton. We show that charge-flipping of phase singularities and orbital angular momentum transfer can occur during the coherent interactions between the two solitons. For incoherent interactions, by controlling the relative intensities of the two solitons, we reveal that soliton-steering can be realized by either attracting the discrete fundamental soliton to four ports or localizing the four-lobe discrete vortex soliton into a ring soliton.
