Matching next-to-leading-order and high-energy-resummed calculations of heavy-quarkonium-hadroproduction cross sections

The energy dependence of the total hadroproduction cross section of pseudo-scalar quarkonia is computed via matching Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) Collinear-Factorisation (CF) results with resummed higher-order corrections, proportional to $α_s^{n}\ln^{n-1}(1/z)$, to the CF hard-scattering coefficient, where $z=M^2/\hat{s}$ with $M$ and $\hat{s}$ being the quarkonium mass and the partonic center-of-mass energy squared. The resummation is performed using High-Energy Factorisation (HEF) in the Doubly-Logarithmic (DL) approximation, which is a subset of the leading logarithmic $\ln (1/z)$ approximation. Doing so, one remains strictly consistent with the NLO and NNLO DGLAP evolution of the PDFs. By improving the treatment of the small-$z$ asymptotics of the CF coefficient function, the resummation cures the unphysical results of the NLO CF calculation. The matching is directly performed in the $z$-space and, for the first time, by using the Inverse-Error Weighting (InEW) matching procedure. As a by-product of the calculation, the NNLO term of the CF hard-scattering coefficient proportional to $α_s^2\ln(1/z)$ is predicted from HEF.

White Paper on Forward Physics, BFKL, Saturation Physics and Diffraction

The goal of this whitepaper is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics. We discuss the occurrences of BFKL resummation effects in special final states, such as Mueller-Navelet jets, jet gap jets, and heavy quarkonium production. It further addresses TMD factorization at low x and the manifestation of a semi-hard saturation scale in (generalized) TMD PDFs. More theoretical aspects of low x physics, probes of the quark gluon plasma, as well as the possibility to use photon-hadron collisions at the LHC to constrain hadronic structure at low x, and the resulting complementarity between LHC and the EIC are also presented. We also briefly discuss diffraction at colliders as well as the possibility to explore further the electroweak theory in central exclusive events using the LHC as a photon-photon collider.

Complete NLO QCD study of single- and double-quarkonium hadroproduction in the colour-evaporation model at the Tevatron and the LHC

We study the Single-Parton-Scattering (SPS) production of double quarkonia (J/psi+J/psi, J/psi+Upsilon, and Upsilon+Upsilon) in pp and pp(bar) collisions at the LHC and the Tevatron as measured by the CMS, ATLAS, LHCb, and D0 experiments in the Colour-Evaporation Model (CEM), based on the quark-hadron-duality, including Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) QCD corrections up to alpha_s^5. To do so, we also perform the first true NLO --up to alpha_s^4-- study of the p_T-differential cross section for single-quarkonium production. This allows us to fix the non-perturbative CEM parameters at NLO accuracy in the region where quarkonium-pair data are measured. Our results show that the CEM at NLO in general significantly undershoots these experimental data and, in view of the other existing SPS studies, confirm the need for Double Parton Scattering (DPS) to account for the data. Our NLO study of single-quarkonium production at mid and large p_T also confirms the difficulty of the approach to account for the measured p_T spectra; this is reminiscent of the impossibility to fit single-quarkonium data with the sole 3S18 NRQCD contribution from gluon fragmentation. We stress that the discrepancy occurs in a kinematical region where the new features of the improved CEM are not relevant.

Associated Quarkonium Hadroproduction at High-Energy Colliders

Quarkonium production in proton-proton collision is interesting in profiling the partons inside the nucleon. Recently, the impact of double parton scatterings (DPSs) was suggested by experimental data of associated quarkonium production (J/psi+Z, J/psi+W, and J/psi+J/psi) at the LHC and Tevatron, in addition to single parton scatterings (SPSs). In this proceedings contribution, we review the extraction of the effective parameter of the DPS through the evaluation of the SPS contributions under quark-hadron duality.

Studies of gluon TMDs and their evolution using quarkonium-pair production at the LHC

$J/ψ$- or $Υ$-pair production at the LHC are promising processes to study the gluon transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) which remain very poorly known. In this article, we improve on previous results by including the TMD evolution in the computation of the observables such as the pair-transverse-momentum spectrum and asymmetries arising from the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized protons. We show that the azimuthal asymmetries generated by the gluon polarization are reduced compared to the tree level case but are still of measurable size (in the 5%-10% range). Such asymmetries should be measurable in the available data sets of $J/ψ$ pairs and in the future data sets of the high-luminosity LHC for $Υ$ pairs.

Associated production of a quarkonium and a Z boson at one loop in a quark-hadron-duality approach

In view of the large discrepancy about the associated production of a prompt $J/ψ$ and a $Z$ boson between the ATLAS data at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV and theoretical predictions for Single Parton Scattering (SPS) contributions, we perform an evaluation of the corresponding cross section at one loop accuracy (Next-to-Leading Order, NLO) in a quark-hadron-duality approach, also known as the Colour-Evaporation Model (CEM). This work is motivated by (i) the extremely disparate predictions based on the existing NRQCD fits conjugated with the absence of a full NLO NRQCD computation and (ii) the fact that we believe that such an evaluation provides a likely upper limit of the SPS cross section. In addition to these theory improvements, we argue that the ATLAS estimation of the Double Parton Scattering (DPS) yield may be underestimated by a factor as large as 3 which then reduces the size of the SPS yield extracted from the ATLAS data. Our NLO SPS evaluation also allows us to set an upper limit on $σ_{\rm eff}$ driving the size of the DPS yield. Overall, the discrepancy between theory and experiment may be smaller than expected, which calls for further analyses by ATLAS and CMS, for which we provide predictions, and for full NLO computations in other models. As an interesting side product of our analysis, we have performed the first NLO computation of $dσ/ dP_T$ for prompt single-$J/ψ$ production in the CEM from which we have fit the CEM non-pertubative parameter at NLO using the most recent ATLAS data.

Di-J/psi production at the Tevatron and the LHC

We briefly review recent results which we have obtained in the study of J/psi-pair production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We claim that the existing data set from CMS and D0 point at a significant double-parton-scattering contribution with an effective cross section smaller than that for jet-related observables. We have also derived simple relations involving feed-down fractions from excited states which can help in disentangling the single from the double scatterings.

Towards an automated tool to evaluate the impact of the nuclear modification of the gluon density on quarkonium, D and B meson production in proton-nucleus collisions

We propose a simple and model-independent procedure to account for the impact of the nuclear modification of the gluon density as encoded in nuclear collinear PDF sets on two-to-two partonic hard processes in proton-nucleus collisions. This applies to a good approximation to quarkonium, D and B meson production, generically referred to H. Our procedure consists in parametrising the square of the parton scattering amplitude, A_{gg -> H X} and constraining it from the proton-proton data. Doing so, we have been able to compute the corresponding nuclear modification factors for J/psi, Upsilon and D^0 as a function of y and P_T at sqrt(s_NN)=5 and 8 TeV in the kinematics of the various LHC experiments in a model independent way. It is of course justified since the most important ingredient in such evaluations is the probability of each kinematical configuration. Our computations for D mesons can also be extended to B meson production. To further illustrate the potentiality of the tool, we provide --for the first time-- predictions for the nuclear modification factor for eta_c production in pPb collisions at the LHC.

Double-quarkonium production at a fixed-target experiment at the LHC (AFTER@LHC)

We present predictions for double-quarkonium production in the kinematical region relevant for the proposed fixed-target experiment using the LHC beams (dubbed as AFTER@LHC). These include all spin-triplet S -wave charmonium and bottomonium pairs, i.e. Psi(n_1S) + Psi(n_2S), Psi(n_1S) + Upsilon(m_1S) and Upsilon(m_1S) + Upsilon(m_2S ) with n_1,n_2 = 1,2 and m_1,m_2 = 1,2,3. We calculate the contributions from double-parton scatterings and single-parton scatterings. With an integrated luminosity of 20 fb-1 to be collected at AFTER@LHC, we find that the yields for double-charmonium production are large enough for differential distribution measurements. We discuss some differential distributions for J/Psi + J/Psi production, which can help to study the physics of double-parton and single-parton scatterings in a new energy range and which might also be sensitive to double intrinsic c-bar(c) coalescence at large negative Feynman x.

Energy Dependence of Direct-Quarkonium Production in pp Collisions from Fixed-Target to LHC Energies: Complete One-Loop Analysis

We compute the energy dependence of the P_T-integrated cross section of directly produced quarkonia in pp collisions at next-to-leading order (NLO), namely up to alpha_s^3, within nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD). Our analysis is based on the idea that the P_T-integrated and the P_T-differential cross sections can be treated as two different observables. The colour-octet NRQCD parameters needed to predict the P_T-integrated yield can thus be extracted from the fits of the P_T-differential cross sections at mid and large P_T. For the first time, the total cross section is evaluated in NRQCD at full NLO accuracy using the recent NLO fits of the P_T-differential yields at RHIC, the Tevatron and the LHC. Both the normalisation and the energy dependence of the J/psi, psi' and Upsilon(1S), we obtained, are in disagreement with the data irrespective of the fit method. The same is true if one uses CEM-like colour-octet NRQCD parameters. If, on the contrary, one disregards the colour-octet contribution, the existing data in the TeV range are well described by the alpha_s^3 contribution in the colour-singlet model --which, at alpha_s^4, however shows an unphysical energy dependence. A similar observation is made for eta(c,b). This calls for a full NNLO or for a resummation of the initial-state radiation in this channel. In any case, past claims that colour-octet transitions are dominantly responsible for low-P_T quarkonium production are not supported by our results. This may impact the interpretation of quarkonium suppression in high-energy proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions.

J/psi-Pair Production at Large Momenta: Indications for Double-Parton Scatterings and Large alpha_s^5 Contributions

We demonstrate that the recent studies of J/psi-pair production by CMS at the LHC and by D0 at the Tevatron reveal the presence of different production mechanisms in different kinematical regions. We find out that next-to-leading-order single parton scattering contributions at alpha_s^5 dominate the yield at large transverse momenta of the pair. Our analysis further emphasises the importance of double parton scatterings --which are expected to dominate the yield at large J/psi-rapidity differences-- at large invariant masses of the pair in the CMS acceptance, and thereby solve a large discrepancy between the theory and the CMS data. In addition, we provide the first exact --gauge-invariant and infrared-safe-- evaluation of a class of leading-P_T (P_T^-4) next-to-next-to-leading-order contributions at alpha_s^6, which can be relevant in the region of large values of P_T,min=min(P_T1,P_T2). Finally, we derive simple relations for the feed-down fractions from the production of an excited charmonium state with a J/psi in the case of the dominance of the double parton scatterings, which significantly deviate from those for single parton scatterings. Such relations can be used to discriminate these extreme scenari, either DPS or SPS dominance.

Accessing the Transverse Dynamics and Polarization of Gluons inside the Proton at the LHC

We argue that the study of heavy quarkonia, in particular that of $Υ$, produced back-to-back with an isolated photon in $pp$ collisions at the LHC is the best --and currently unique-- way to access the distribution of both the transverse momentum and the polarization of the gluon in an unpolarized proton. These encode fundamental information on the dynamics of QCD. We have derived analytical expressions for various transverse-momentum distributions which can be measured at the LHC and which allow for a direct extraction of the aforementioned quantities. To assess the feasibility of such measurements, we have evaluated the expected yields and the relevant transverse-momentum distributions for different models of the gluon dynamics inside a proton.

Production of J/psi+eta(c) vs. J/psi+J/psi at the LHC: Impact of Real alpha_s^5 corrections

We proceed for the first time to the evaluation of the Born cross section for J/psi+eta(c) production, namely via g+g -> J/psi+eta(c)+g, and show that it has a harder P_T spectrum than the J/psi-pair yield at Born level. If one stuck to a comparison at Born level, one would conclude that J/psi+eta(c) production would surpass that of J/psi+J/psi at large P_T. This is nonetheless not the case since J/psi-pair production, as for single J/psi, receives leading-P_T contributions at higher orders in alpha_s. We also present the first evaluation of these leading-P_T next-to-leading order contributions. These are indeed significant for increasing P_T and are of essential relevance for comparison with forthcoming data. We also compute kinematic correlations relevant for double-parton-scattering studies. Finally, we evaluate the polarisation of a J/psi accompanied either by a eta(c) or a J/psi and another light parton. These results may be of great help to understand the polarisation of quarkonia produced at high energies.

Cold Nuclear Matter effects in Upsilon production in dAu collisions at RHIC

We report on our recent study of Cold Nuclear Matter effects on the Upsilon production at RHIC in dAu collisions. The first experimental results available on the nuclear modification factor R_dAu have rather large uncertainties. They nevertheless allow to bring qualitative information on the nature of the nuclear effects at play on top of the usual nuclear absorption, since the latter is expected to lie in a quite small range around a value close to ten times smaller as for charmonia. At backward rapidities, the behavior of R_dAu hints at the presence of a gluon EMC effect, analogous to the quark EMC effect -- but possibly stronger. Mid rapidity measurements with a better precision are highly desirable to pin down the gluon anti-shadowing, still under debate. At forward rapidities, the data leave some room for an additional fractional energy loss mechanism, recently revived in the literature.

Next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to the yields and polarisations of J/Psi and Upsilon directly produced in association with a Z boson at the LHC

We update the study of the production of direct J/Psi in association with a Z boson at the Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) in alpha_s by evaluating both the yield differential in P_T and the J/Psi polarisation in the QCD-based Colour-Singlet Model (CSM). Contrary to an earlier claim, QCD corrections at small and mid P_T are small if one assumes that the factorisation and the renormalisation scales are commensurate with the Z boson mass. As it can be anticipated, the t-channel gluon-exchange (t-CGE) topologies start to be dominant only for P_T > mZ/2. The polarisation pattern is not altered by the QCD corrections. This is thus far the first quarkonium-production process where this is observed in the CSM. Along the same lines, our predictions for direct Upsilon+Z are also given.

Heavy-Quarkonium Production in High Energy Proton-Proton Collisions at RHIC

We update the study of the total Psi and Upsilon production cross section in proton-proton collisions at RHIC energies using the QCD-based Color-Singlet (CS) Model, including next-to-leading order partonic matrix elements. We also include charm-quark initiated processes which appear at leading order in alpha_s, but which have so far been overlooked in such studies. Contrary to earlier claims, we show that the CS yield is consistent with measurements over a broad range of J/Psi rapidities. We also find that charm-quark initiated processes, including both intrinsic and sea-like charm components, typically contribute at least 20% of the direct J/Psi yield, improving the agreement with data both for the integrated cross section and its rapidity dependence. The key signature for such processes is the observation of a charm-quark jet opposite in azimuthal angle phi to the detected J/Psi. Our results have impact on the proper interpretation of heavy-quarkonium production in heavy-ion collisions and its use as a probe for the quark-gluon plasma.

Study of Higgs boson production and its b-bbar decay in gamma-gamma processes in proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC

We explore for the first time the possibilities to measure an intermediate-mass (mH = 115-140 GeV/c^2) Standard-Model Higgs boson in electromagnetic proton-lead (pPb) interactions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) via its b-bbar decay. Using equivalent Weizsaecker-Williams photon fluxes and Higgs effective field theory for the coupling gamma-gamma --> H, we obtain a leading-order cross section of the order of 0.3 pb for exclusive Higgs production in elastic (pPb --> gamma-gamma --> p H Pb) and semielastic (pPb --> gamma-gamma --> Pb H X) processes at sqrt(s) = 8.8 TeV. After applying various kinematics cuts to remove the main backgrounds (gamma-gamma --> b-bbar and misidentified gamma-gamma-->q-qbar events), we find that a Higgs boson with mH = 120 GeV/c^2 could be observed in the b-bbar channel with a 3sigma-significance integrating 300 pb^-1 with an upgraded pA luminosity of 10^31 cm^-2s^-1. We also provide for the first time semielastic Higgs cross sections, along with elastic t-tbar cross sections, for electromagnetic pp, pA and AA collisions at the LHC.
