$J/ψ$ polarization in semi-inclusive DIS at low and high transverse momentum

We study the polar and azimuthal decay angular distributions of $J/ψ$ mesons produced in semi-inclusive, deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering. For the description of the quarkonium formation mechanism, we adopt the framework of nonrelativistic QCD, with the inclusion of the intermediate color-octet channels that are suppressed at most by a factor $v^4$ in the velocity parameter $v$ relative to the leading color-singlet channel. We put forward factorized expressions for the helicity structure functions in terms of transverse momentum dependent gluon distributions and shape functions, which are valid when the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum is small with respect to the hard scale of the process. By requiring that such expressions correctly match with the collinear factorization results at high transverse momentum, we determine the perturbative tails of the shape functions and find them to be independent of the $J/ψ$ polarization. In particular, we focus on the $\cos 2ϕ$ azimuthal decay asymmetry, which originates from the distribution of linearly polarized gluons inside an unpolarized proton. We therefore suggest a novel experiment for the extraction of this so-far unknown parton density that could be performed, in principle, at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

$J/ψ$ meson production in SIDIS: matching high and low transverse momentum

We consider the transverse momentum spectrum and the $\cos 2ϕ$ azimuthal distribution of $J/ψ$ mesons produced in semi-inclusive, deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering, where the electron and the proton are unpolarized. At low transverse momentum, we propose factorized expressions in terms of transverse momentum dependent gluon distributions and shape functions. We show that our formulae, at the order $α_s,$ correctly match with the collinear factorization results at high transverse momentum. The latter are computed at the order $α_s^2$ in the framework of nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD), with the inclusion of the intermediate $^3S_1^{[1]}$ color-singlet Fock state, as well as the subleading color-octet ones that are relatively suppressed by a factor $v^4$ in the NRQCD velocity parameter $v$. We show that the $^1\!S_0^{[8]}$ and $^3\!P_J^{[8]}$ ($J = 0,1,2$) contributions diverge in the small transverse momentum region and allow us to determine the perturbative tails of the shape functions, which carry the same quantum numbers. These turn out to be identical, except for the overall magnitude given by the appropriate NRQCD long distance matrix element.

Gluon TMDs and Opportunities at an EIC

We show how transverse momentum dependent gluon distributions could be probed at a future Electron-Ion Collider through the analysis of transverse momentum spectra and azimuthal asymmetries in the inclusive electroproduction of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ mesons. The maximum values of these asymmetries, obtained in a model-independent way by imposing the positivity bounds of the polarized gluon distributions, suggest the feasibility of the proposed measurements.

Studies of gluon TMDs and their evolution using quarkonium-pair production at the LHC

$J/ψ$- or $Υ$-pair production at the LHC are promising processes to study the gluon transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) which remain very poorly known. In this article, we improve on previous results by including the TMD evolution in the computation of the observables such as the pair-transverse-momentum spectrum and asymmetries arising from the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized protons. We show that the azimuthal asymmetries generated by the gluon polarization are reduced compared to the tree level case but are still of measurable size (in the 5%-10% range). Such asymmetries should be measurable in the available data sets of $J/ψ$ pairs and in the future data sets of the high-luminosity LHC for $Υ$ pairs.

Asymmetries in Heavy Quark Pair and Dijet Production at an EIC

Asymmetries in heavy quark pair and dijet production in electron-proton collisions allow studies of gluon TMDs in close analogy to studies of quark TMDs in semi-inclusive DIS. Here we present expressions for azimuthal asymmetries for both unpolarized and transversely polarized proton cases and consider the maximal asymmetries allowed. The latter are found to be rather sizeable, except in certain kinematic limits which are pointed out. In addition, we consider the small-x limit and expectations from a McLerran-Venugopalan model for unpolarized and linearly polarized gluons and from a perturbative, large transverse momentum calculation for the T-odd gluon TMDs. Comparison to related observables at RHIC and LHC is expected to provide valuable information about the process dependence of the gluon TMDs. In particular this will offer the possibility of a sign change test of the gluon Sivers TMD and two other T-odd gluon TMDs. This provides additional motivation for studies of azimuthal asymmetries in heavy quark pair and dijet production at a future Electron-Ion Collider.

Probing Gluon TMDs at a Future EIC

Gluon TMDs can be accessed through the analysis of azimuthal asymmetries for heavy quark pair and dijet production in electron-proton collisions, similarly to the way quark TMDs are commonly extracted from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering data. We calculate the upper bounds for these observables, showing in which kinematic regions they are large enough to be measured in future experiments at an Electron-Ion Collider. Moreover, we study their behavior in the small-$x$ region, adopting a McLerran-Venugopalan model for unpolarized and linearly polarized gluon distributions. By comparison with related observables at RHIC and LHC, we expect to gather information on the process dependence of the gluon TMDs and to test our prediction of a sign change of the gluon Sivers function and two other $T$-odd gluon distributions.

Impact of gluon polarization on Higgs plus jet production at the LHC

In this paper we consider Higgs plus jet production as a process that is sensitive to the linear polarization of gluons inside the unpolarized protons of the LHC. The leading order expressions for the transverse momentum distribution of the Higgs plus jet pair are provided in terms of transverse momentum dependent quark and gluon distributions. This includes both angular independent and azimuthal angular dependent contributions, presented directly in the laboratory frame. Lacking experimental constraints on the linearly polarized gluon distribution, we study its effects on Higgs plus jet production using two different models to illustrate the generic features and maximal effects. It is found that the $\cos 2 ϕ$ distribution may be the most promising observable, as it is driven by only one initial linearly polarized gluon. The potential advantages of the Higgs plus jet process compared to other processes sensitive to the linear polarization of gluons are discussed.

preprint2015arXiv

Linear polarization of gluons and Higgs plus jet production at the LHC

We show that the production of a Higgs boson in association with a jet in proton-proton collisions is sensitive to the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized protons. We present the analytical expressions, at leading order in perturbative QCD, for various transverse momentum dependent observables, which can be measured at the LHC. Since there are no experimental constraints on the linearly polarized gluon distribution, its effects are studied by adopting two different models. In particular, we find that the $\cos2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry is a very promising observable because it could give access to the sign of this new distribution.

Momentum Imbalance Observables as a Probe of Gluon TMDs

The unpolarized and linearly polarized gluon TMDs can be directly probed in heavy quark and jet pair production in unpolarized electron-proton collisions by looking at observables, like transverse momentum distributions and azimuthal asymmetries, depending on the momentum imbalance of the pair. Analytical expressions are presented for these observables and for analogous ones in Higgs plus jet and quarkonium plus photon production in unpolarized proton-proton scattering experiments. It is shown how the proposed measurements, to be performed at a future EIC and at the LHC, could provide important information on the size and shape of gluon TMDs, as well as on other fundamental properties such as their process and energy scale dependences.

Polarization effects in double open-charm production at LHCb

Double open-charm production is one of the most promising channels to disentangle single from double parton scattering (DPS) and study different properties of DPS. Several studies of the DPS contributions have been made. A missing ingredient so far has been the study of polarization effects, arising from spin correlations between the two partons inside an unpolarized proton. We investigate the impact polarization has on the double open-charm cross section. We show that the longitudinally polarized gluons can give significant contributions to the cross section, but for most of the considered kinematic region only have a moderate effect on the shape. We compare our findings to the LHCb data in the D0D0 final state, identify observables where polarization does have an impact on the distribution of the final state particles, and suggest measurements which could lead to first experimental indications of, or limits on, polarization in DPS.

The gluon Sivers distribution: status and future prospects

This is a review of what is currently known about the gluon Sivers distribution and of what are the opportunities to learn more about it. Because single transverse spin asymmetries in $p^\uparrow \, p \to π\, X$ provide only indirect information about the gluon Sivers function through the relation with the quark-gluon and tri-gluon Qiu-Sterman functions, current data from hadronic collisions at RHIC have not yet been translated into a solid constraint on the gluon Sivers function. SIDIS data, including the COMPASS deuteron data, allow for a gluon Sivers contribution that is of the natural size expected from large $N_c$ arguments, which is ${\cal O}(1/N_c)$ times the nonsinglet quark Sivers contribution. Several very promising processes to measure the gluon Sivers effect directly have been put forward, which apart from ongoing and future investigations at RHIC, would strongly favor experiments at AFTER@LHC and a possible future Electron-Ion Collider. Due to the inherent process dependence of TMDs, the gluon Sivers TMD probed in the various processes are not necessarily the same, but rather can be different linear combinations of two universal gluon Sivers functions that have different behavior under charge conjugation and that therefore satisfy different theoretical constraints. For this reason both hadronic and DIS type of collisions are essential in the study of the role of gluons in transversely polarized protons.

Accessing the Transverse Dynamics and Polarization of Gluons inside the Proton at the LHC

We argue that the study of heavy quarkonia, in particular that of $Υ$, produced back-to-back with an isolated photon in $pp$ collisions at the LHC is the best --and currently unique-- way to access the distribution of both the transverse momentum and the polarization of the gluon in an unpolarized proton. These encode fundamental information on the dynamics of QCD. We have derived analytical expressions for various transverse-momentum distributions which can be measured at the LHC and which allow for a direct extraction of the aforementioned quantities. To assess the feasibility of such measurements, we have evaluated the expected yields and the relevant transverse-momentum distributions for different models of the gluon dynamics inside a proton.

Azimuthal asymmetries in $p^\uparrow p \to {\rm jet}\, π\, X$

We study the azimuthal asymmetries for the distributions of leading pions inside a jet produced inclusively in high-energy proton-proton collisions within the framework of the transverse momentum dependent generalized parton model. We present results for the RHIC center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 and 500 GeV, mainly for forward jet rapidities, in particular for the two mechanisms which dominate such asymmetries: the Sivers and the Collins effects. We also briefly discuss the case of inclusive jet production and, adopting the so-called colour gauge invariant parton model, we propose a phenomenological analysis of the process dependence of the quark Sivers function.

Probing the transverse dynamics and polarization of gluons inside the proton at the LHC

Transverse momentum dependent gluon distributions encode fundamental information on the structure of the proton. Here we show how they can be accessed in heavy quarkonium production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. In particular, their first determination could come from the study of an isolated J/psi or Upsilon particle, produced back to back with a photon.

preprint2014arXiv

Transverse momentum dependent gluon distributions at the LHC

Linearly polarized gluons inside an unpolarized proton contribute to the transverse momentum distributions of (pseudo)scalar particles produced in hadronic collisions, such as Higgs bosons and quarkonia with even charge conjugation ($η_c$, $η_b$, $χ_{c0}$, $χ_{b0}$). Moreover, they can produce azimuthal asymmetries in the associated production of a photon and a $J/ψ$ or a $Υ$ particle, in a kinematic configuration in which they are almost back to back. These observables, which can be measured in the running experiments at the LHC, could lead to a first extraction of both the polarized and the unpolarized gluon distributions and allow for a study of their process and energy scale dependences.

Azimuthal distributions of pions inside jets at RHIC

We evaluate the azimuthal asymmetries for the distributions of leading pions inside a jet, produced in high-energy proton-proton collisions, in kinematic configurations currently under active investigation at RHIC. Adopting a transverse momentum dependent approach, which assumes the validity of a perturbative QCD factorization scheme and takes into account all the spin and intrinsic parton motion effects, we show how the main mechanisms underlying these asymmetries, namely the Sivers and the Collins effects, can be disentangled. Furthermore, we consider the impact of color-gauge invariant initial and final state interactions and suggest a method for testing the universality properties of the Sivers function for quarks.

Collins and Sivers effects in p(transv. polarized) p --> jet pion X: Universality and process dependence

In this paper we briefly review the transverse momentum dependent generalized parton model and its application to the study of azimuthal asymmetries in the distribution of leading hadrons (mainly pions) inside large transverse momentum jets inclusively produced in polarized proton-proton collisions. We put particular emphasis on the phenomenological interest of these observables, in combination with similar asymmetries measured in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan processes and e+e- collisions, for the study of the universality properties of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions. We present results for RHIC kinematics at center-of-mass energies sqrt{s} = 200 and 500 GeV, for central and mainly forward jet rapidities, in particular for the Sivers distribution and the Collins fragmentation function, that are believed to be responsible of many of the largest asymmetries measured in the last years. We also briefly discuss the case of inclusive jet production and recent phenomenological applications of other theoretical approaches, like the colour gauge invariant generalized parton model and the collinear twist-three approach, aiming at clarifying the issues of the universality and process dependence of transverse momentum dependent functions.

Determining the Higgs spin and parity in the diphoton decay channel

We calculate the diphoton distribution in the decay of arbitrary spin-0 and spin-2 bosons produced from gluon fusion, taking into account the fact that gluons inside an unpolarized proton are generally linearly polarized. The gluon polarization brings about a difference in the transverse momentum distribution of positive and negative parity states. At the same time, it causes the azimuthal distribution of the photon pair to be non-isotropic for several spin-2 coupling hypotheses, allowing one to distinguish these from the isotropic scalar and pseudoscalar distributions.

Linear polarization of gluons and photons in unpolarized collider experiments

We study azimuthal asymmetries in heavy quark pair production in unpolarized electron-proton and proton-proton collisions, where the asymmetries originate from the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized hadrons. We provide cross section expressions and study the maximal asymmetries allowed by positivity, for both charm and bottom quark pair production. The upper bounds on the asymmetries are shown to be very large depending on the transverse momentum of the heavy quarks, which is promising especially for their measurements at a possible future Electron-Ion Collider or a Large Hadron electron Collider. We also study the analogous processes and asymmetries in muon pair production as a means to probe linearly polarized photons inside unpolarized protons. For increasing invariant mass of the muon pair the asymmetries become very similar to the heavy quark pair ones. Finally, we discuss the process dependence of the results that arises due to differences in color flow and address the problem with factorization in case of proton-proton collisions.

Probing TMDs through azimuthal distributions of pions inside a jet in hadronic collisions

The azimuthal distributions around the jet axis of leading pions produced in the jet fragmentation process in pp collisions are studied within the framework of the so-called generalized parton model. The observable leading-twist azimuthal asymmetries are estimated in kinematic configurations presently investigated at RHIC. It is shown how the main contributions coming from the Collins and Sivers effects can be disentangled. In addition, a test of the process dependence of the Sivers function is provided.

Linearly polarized Gluons and the Higgs Transverse Momentum Distribution

We investigate the possible role of linearly polarized gluons in Higgs production from unpolarized pp collisions. The transverse momentum distribution of the produced Higgs boson is found to exhibit a modulation with respect to the naive, unpolarized expectation, with the sign depending on the parity of the Higgs boson. The transverse momentum distribution of a scalar Higgs will, therefore, have a shape clearly different from a pseudoscalar Higgs. We suggest that this effect can be used to determine the parity of the Higgs at the LHC, without the need to use challenging angular distributions.

Polarized gluon studies with charmonium and bottomonium at LHCb and AFTER

Recently it has been put forward that linearly polarized gluons inside unpolarized protons affect the transverse momentum distribution of final state particles in hadronic collisions. They lead to a characteristic modulation of the differential cross section in Higgs production and to azimuthal asymmetries in, for instance, heavy quark pair production. Here we study the effect on charmonium and bottomonium production in hadronic collisions, such as at LHCb and at the proposed fixed target experiment AFTER at LHC. We focus mainly on the scalar and pseudoscalar quarkonia, eta_c, chi_{c0}, eta_b, chi_{b0}, which allow for an angular independent investigation. Within the framework of transverse momentum dependent factorization in combination with the nonrelativistic QCD based color-singlet quarkonium model, we show for small transverse momentum (q_T^2 \ll 4 M_Q^2) that the scalar and pseudoscalar quarkonium production cross sections are modified in different ways by linearly polarized gluons, while their effects on the production of higher angular momentum quarkonium states are strongly suppressed. Comparisons to chi_{c2}, chi_{b2} production can help to cancel out uncertainties. Together with the analogous study in Higgs production at LHC, quarkonium production can moreover be used to test the scale dependence of the linearly polarized gluon distribution over a large energy range.

Accessing the distribution of linearly polarized gluons in unpolarized hadrons

Gluons inside unpolarized hadrons can be linearly polarized provided they have a nonzero transverse momentum. The simplest and theoretically safest way to probe this distribution of linearly polarized gluons is through cos(2 phi) asymmetries in heavy quark pair or dijet production in electron-hadron collisions. Future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) or Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) experiments are ideally suited for this purpose. Here we estimate the maximum asymmetries for EIC kinematics.

Azimuthal distributions of pions inside a jet in hadronic collisions

Using a generalized parton model approach including spin and intrinsic parton motion effects, and assuming the validity of factorization for large pT jet production in hadronic collisions, we study the azimuthal distribution around the jet axis of leading pions, produced in the jet fragmentation process. We identify the observable leading-twist azimuthal asymmetries, which are generated by all the physically allowed combinations of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and fragmentation functions. In particular, we show how one can isolate the Collins and Sivers contributions, and suggest a test of the process dependence of the Sivers function by considering the effect of color-gauge invariant initial and final state interactions.

Direct Probes of Linearly Polarized Gluons inside Unpolarized Hadrons

We show that linearly polarized gluons inside unpolarized hadrons can be directly probed in jet or heavy quark pair production in electron-hadron collisions. We discuss the simplest cos (2 phi) asymmetries and estimate their maximal value, concluding that measurements of the unknown linearly polarized gluon distribution in the proton should be feasible in future EIC or LHeC experiments. Analogous asymmetries in hadron-hadron collisions suffer from factorization breaking contributions and would allow to quantify the importance of initial and final state interactions.

Testing the process dependence of the Sivers function via hadron distributions inside a jet

We study the process dependence of the Sivers function by considering the impact of color-gauge invariant initial and final state interactions on transverse spin asymmetries in proton-proton reactions within the framework of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD), generalized parton model. To this aim, we consider the azimuthal distribution of leading pions inside a fragmenting jet as well as single inclusive jet asymmetry in polarized proton proton collisions. In contrast to single inclusive pion production, in both cases we can isolate the Sivers contribution and thereby study its process dependence. The predictions for the Sivers asymmetry obtained with and without inclusion of color gauge factors are comparable in size but with opposite signs. We conclude that both processes represent unique opportunities to discriminate among the two approaches and test the universality properties of the Sivers function in hadronic reactions.

Azimuthal asymmetries for hadron distributions inside a jet in hadronic collisions

Using a generalized parton model approach including spin and intrinsic parton motion effects, and assuming the validity of factorization for large-pT jet production in hadronic collisions, we study the azimuthal distribution around the jet axis of leading unpolarized or (pseudo)scalar hadrons, namely pions, produced in the jet fragmentation process. We identify the observable leading-twist azimuthal asymmetries for the unpolarized and single-polarized case related to quark and gluon-originated jets. We account for all physically allowed combinations of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and fragmentation functions, with special attention to the Sivers, Boer-Mulders, and transversity quark distributions, and to the Collins fragmentation function for quarks (and to the analogous functions for gluons). For each of these effects we evaluate, at central and forward rapidities and for kinematical configurations accessible at BNL-RHIC, the corresponding potentially maximized asymmetry (for pi+ production), obtained by saturating natural positivity bounds (and the Soffer bound for transversity) for the distribution and fragmentation functions involved and summing additively all partonic contributions. We then estimate, for both neutral and charged pions, the asymmetries involving TMD functions for which parameterizations are available. We also study the role of the different mechanisms, and the corresponding transverse single spin asymmetries, for large-pT inclusive jet production.

Dynamical parton distribution functions

Recent measurements for F_2(x,Q^2) have been analyzed in terms of the `dynamical' and `standard' parton model approach at NLO and NNLO of perturbative QCD. Having fixed the relevant NLO and NNLO parton distributions, the implications and predictions for the longitudinal structure function F_L(x,Q^2) are presented. It is shown that the previously noted extreme perturbative NNLO/NLO instability of F_L(x,Q^2) is an artifact of the commonly utilized `standard' gluon distributions. In particular it is demonstrated that using the appropriate -- dynamically generated -- parton distributions at NLO and NNLO, F_L(x,Q^2) turns out to be perturbatively rather stable already for Q^2 \geq O(2-3 GeV^2).
