Studies of gluon TMDs and their evolution using quarkonium-pair production at the LHC

$J/ψ$- or $Υ$-pair production at the LHC are promising processes to study the gluon transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) which remain very poorly known. In this article, we improve on previous results by including the TMD evolution in the computation of the observables such as the pair-transverse-momentum spectrum and asymmetries arising from the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized protons. We show that the azimuthal asymmetries generated by the gluon polarization are reduced compared to the tree level case but are still of measurable size (in the 5%-10% range). Such asymmetries should be measurable in the available data sets of $J/ψ$ pairs and in the future data sets of the high-luminosity LHC for $Υ$ pairs.

The transverse nucleon single-spin asymmetry for the semi-inclusive production of photons in lepton-nucleon scattering

We study the semi-inclusive production of real, high-$p_T$, isolated photons in unpolarized and polarized lepton-proton collisions, $\ell p\to \ellγX$. In particular we analyze the transverse nucleon single-spin asymmetry within the collinear twist-3 formalism in perturbative QCD to leading order (LO) accuracy. We find that this spin asymmetry is generated by twist-3 dynamical quark-gluon-quark ($qgq$) correlations in the nucleon through the so-called soft-fermion and hard pole contributions. Hence, this process unprecedentedly allows for a point-by-point scan of the support of the dynamical $qgq$ twist-3 matrix elements $F_{FT}(x,x^\prime)$ and $G_{FT}(x,x^\prime)$ in lepton-nucleon scattering experiments.

Operator Constraints for Twist-3 Functions and Lorentz Invariance Properties of Twist-3 Observables

We investigate the behavior under Lorentz tranformations of perturbative coefficient functions in a collinear twist-3 formalism relevant for high-energy observables including transverse polarization of hadrons. We argue that those perturbative coefficient functions can, {\it a priori}, acquire quite different yet Lorentz-invariant forms in various frames. This somewhat surprising difference can be traced back to a general dependence of the perturbative coefficient functions on lightcone vectors which are introduced by the twist-3 factorization formulae and which are frame-dependent. One can remove this spurious frame dependence by invoking so-called Lorentz invariance relations (LIRs) between twist-3 parton correlation functions. Some of those relations for twist-3 distribution functions were discussed in the literature before. In this paper we derive the corresponding LIRs for twist-3 fragmentation functions. We explicitly demonstrate that these LIRs remove the lightcone vector dependence by considering transverse spin observables in the single-inclusive production of hadrons in lepton-nucleon collisions, $\ell N\to hX$. With the LIRs in hand, we also show that twist-3 observables in general can be written solely in terms of three-parton correlation functions.

Single-Inclusive Production of Hadrons and Jets in Lepton-Nucleon Scattering at NLO

We present next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative-QCD calculations of the cross sections for $\ell N\to h X$ and $\ell N\to \mathrm{jet}\, X$. The main feature of these processes is that the scattered lepton is not observed, so that the hard scale that makes them perturbative is set by the transverse momentum of the hadron or jet. Kinematically, the two processes thus become direct analogs of single-inclusive production in hadronic collisions which, as has been pointed out in the literature, makes them promising tools for exploring transverse spin phenomena in QCD when the incident nucleon is transversely polarized. We find that the NLO corrections are sizable for the spin-averaged cross section. We also investigate in how far the scattering is dominated by the exchange of almost real (Weizsäcker-Williams) photons. We present numerical estimates of the cross sections for present-day fixed target experiments and for a possible future electron ion collider.

NLO K-factors for Single-Inclusive Leptoproduction of Hadrons

In these proceedings we discuss next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative-QCD calculations of the cross section for the process $\ell N\to h X$. We briefly present the main features of the calculation and in particular analyze the role of quasi-real photons that enter the processes because the scattered lepton is not observed. We find that the NLO corrections are sizable for the spin-averaged cross section. In order to quantify this statement we present the K-factors of the cross sections for fixed target experiments HERMES, JLab12 and COMPASS.

Accessing the Transverse Dynamics and Polarization of Gluons inside the Proton at the LHC

We argue that the study of heavy quarkonia, in particular that of $Υ$, produced back-to-back with an isolated photon in $pp$ collisions at the LHC is the best --and currently unique-- way to access the distribution of both the transverse momentum and the polarization of the gluon in an unpolarized proton. These encode fundamental information on the dynamics of QCD. We have derived analytical expressions for various transverse-momentum distributions which can be measured at the LHC and which allow for a direct extraction of the aforementioned quantities. To assess the feasibility of such measurements, we have evaluated the expected yields and the relevant transverse-momentum distributions for different models of the gluon dynamics inside a proton.

Determining the Higgs spin and parity in the diphoton decay channel

We calculate the diphoton distribution in the decay of arbitrary spin-0 and spin-2 bosons produced from gluon fusion, taking into account the fact that gluons inside an unpolarized proton are generally linearly polarized. The gluon polarization brings about a difference in the transverse momentum distribution of positive and negative parity states. At the same time, it causes the azimuthal distribution of the photon pair to be non-isotropic for several spin-2 coupling hypotheses, allowing one to distinguish these from the isotropic scalar and pseudoscalar distributions.

Model Prediction for the Transverse Single Target-Spin Asymmetry in inclusive DIS

The single-spin asymmetry of unpolarized leptons scattering deep-inelastically off transversely polarized nucleons is discussed. This observable is generated by a two-photon exchange between lepton and nucleon. In a partonic description of the asymmetry the non-perturbative part is given in terms of multiparton correlations: quark-gluon correlation functions and quark-photon correlation functions. Recently, a model for quark-gluon correlation functions was presented where these objects were expressed through non-valence light cone wave functions. Using this model, estimates for the single-spin asymmetries for a proton and a neutron are presented.

A partonic description of the transverse target single-spin asymmetry in inclusive DIS

The single-spin asymmetry of unpolarized leptons scattering deep-inelastically off transversely polarized nucleons is studied in a partonic picture within a collinear twist-3 framework. Since this observable is generated by multi-photon exchanges between lepton and nucleon a partonic description of the asymmetry contains essential elements of a full next-to-leading order calculation for single-spin asymmetries in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. In particular it is shown how nontrivial cancellations between kinematical and dynamical twist-3 contributions lead to a well-behaved and finite formula. This final result can be expressed in terms of multipartonic quark-gluon and quark-photon correlation functions. Hence, a measurement of the transverse target single-spin asymmetry may provide new constraints on these multipartonic correlations.

Linearly polarized Gluons and the Higgs Transverse Momentum Distribution

We investigate the possible role of linearly polarized gluons in Higgs production from unpolarized pp collisions. The transverse momentum distribution of the produced Higgs boson is found to exhibit a modulation with respect to the naive, unpolarized expectation, with the sign depending on the parity of the Higgs boson. The transverse momentum distribution of a scalar Higgs will, therefore, have a shape clearly different from a pseudoscalar Higgs. We suggest that this effect can be used to determine the parity of the Higgs at the LHC, without the need to use challenging angular distributions.

Probing Gluonic Spin-Orbit Correlations in Photon Pair Production

We consider photon pair production in hadronic collisions at large mass and small transverse momentum of the pair, assuming that factorization in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions applies. The unpolarized cross section is found to have azimuthal angular dependencies that are generated by a gluonic version of the Boer-Mulders function. In addition, the single-transversely polarized cross section is sensitive to the gluon Sivers function. We present simple numerical estimates for the Boer-Mulders and Sivers effects in diphoton production at RHIC and find that the process would offer unique opportunities for exploring transverse momentum dependent gluon distributions.

Final state interactions and the Sivers function

The non-vanishing of naive T-odd parton distributions function can be explained by the existence of the gauge link which emerges from the factorized description of the deep inelastic scattering cross section into perturbatively calculable and non-perturbative factors. This path ordered exponential describes initial / final-state interactions of the active parton due to soft gluon exchanges with the target remnants. Although these interactions are non-perturbative, studies of final state interactions have been approximated by perturbative one-gluon exchange in Abelian models. We include higher-order gluonic contributions from the gauge link by applying non-perturbative eikonal methods, incorporating color degrees of freedom in a calculation of the Sivers function. In this context we study the effects of color by considering the FSIs with Abelian and non-Abelian gluon interactions. We confirm the large $N_c$ QCD scaling behavior of Sivers functions and further uncover the deviations for finite $N_c$. Within this framework of FSIs we perform a quantitative check of approximate relations between T-odd TMDs and GPD which goes beyond the discussion of overall signs.

Final state interactions and the transverse structure of the pion using non-perturbative eikonal methods

In the factorized picture of semi-inclusive hadronic processes the naive time reversal-odd parton distributions exist by virtue of the gauge link which renders it color gauge invariant. The link characterizes the dynamical effect of initial/final-state interactions of the active parton due soft gluon exchanges with the target remnant. Though these interactions are non-perturbative, studies of final-state interaction have been approximated by perturbative one-gluon approximation in Abelian models. We include higher-order contributions by applying non-perturbative eikonal methods incorporating color degrees of freedom in a calculation of the Boer-Mulders function of the pion. Using this framework we explore under what conditions the Boer Mulders function can be described in terms of factorization of final state interactions and a spatial distribution in impact parameter space.

Final State Interactions, T-odd PDFs & the Lensing Function

It has been suggested that under certain approximations the Sivers effect can be described in terms of factorization of final state interactions and a spatial distortion of impact parameter space parton distribution; that is a convolution of the so-called lensing function and the impact parameter GPD $E$. In this approach the lensing function is calculated in a non-perturbative eikonal model. This enables a comparison between the a priori distinct Sivers function and the GPD $E$ which goes beyond the discussion of overall signs.

What can break the Wandzura--Wilczek relation?

We analyze the breaking of the Wandzura-Wilczek relation for the g_2 structure function, emphasizing its connection with transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions. We find that the relation is broken by two distinct twist-3 terms, and clarify how these can be separated in measurements of double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. Through a quantitative analysis of available g_2 data we also show that the breaking of the Wandzura-Wilczek relation can be as large as 15-30% of the size of g_2.

Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at small transverse momentum

We study the cross section for one-particle inclusive deep inelastic scattering off the nucleon for low transverse momentum of the detected hadron. We decompose the cross section in terms of structure functions and calculate them at tree level in terms of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions. Our results are complete in the one-photon exchange approximation at leading and first subleading twist accuracy, with both beam and target polarization.
