Contact Graphs, Boundaries, and a Central Limit Theorem for CAT(0) cubical complexes

Let $X$ be a nonelementary CAT(0) cubical complex. We prove that if $X$ is essential and irreducible, then the contact graph of $X$ (introduced in \cite{Hagen}) is unbounded and its boundary is homeomorphic to the regular boundary of $X$ (defined in \cite{Fernos}, \cite{KarSageev}). Using this, we reformulate the Caprace-Sageev's Rank-Rigidity Theorem in terms of the action on the contact graph. Let $G$ be a group with a nonelementary action on $X$, and $(Z_n)$ a random walk corresponding to a generating probability measure on $G$ with finite second moment. Using this identification of the boundary of the contact graph, we prove a Central Limit Theorem for $(Z_n)$, namely that $\frac{d(Z_n o,o)-nA}{\sqrt n}$ converges in law to a non-degenerate Gaussian distribution (where $A=\lim \frac{d(Z_no,o)}{n}$ is the drift of the random walk, and $o\in X$ is an arbitrary basepoint).

Proper proximality in non-positive curvature

Proper proximality of a countable group is a notion that was introduced by Boutonnet, Ioana and Peterson as a tool to study rigidity properties of certain von Neumann algebras associated to groups or ergodic group actions. In the present paper, we establish the proper proximality of many groups acting on nonpositively curved spaces. First, these include many countable groups $G$ acting properly nonelementarily by isometries on a proper $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ space $X$. More precisely, proper proximality holds in the presence of rank one isometries or when $X$ is a locally thick affine building with a minimal $G$-action. As a consequence of Rank Rigidity, we derive the proper proximality of all countable nonelementary $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ cubical groups, and of all countable groups acting properly cocompactly nonelementarily by isometries on either a Hadamard manifold with no Euclidean factor, or on a $2$-dimensional piecewise Euclidean $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ simplicial complex. Second, we establish the proper proximality of many hierarchically hyperbolic groups. These include the mapping class groups of connected orientable finite-type boundaryless surfaces (apart from a few low-complexity cases), thus answering a question raised by Boutonnet, Ioana and Peterson. We also prove the proper proximality of all subgroups acting nonelementarily on the curve graph. In view of work of Boutonnet, Ioana and Peterson, our results have applications to structural and rigidity results for von Neumann algebras associated to all the above groups and their ergodic actions.

Tangent bundles of hyperbolic spaces and proper affine actions on $L^p$ spaces

We define the notion of a negatively curved tangent bundle of a metric measured space. We prove that, when a group $G$ acts on a metric measured space $X$ with a negatively curved tangent bundle, then $G$ acts on some $L^p$ space, and that this action is proper under suitable assumptions. We then check that this result applies to the case when $X$ is a hyperbolic space.

Almost algebraic actions of algebraic groups and applications to algebraic representations

Let G be an algebraic group over a complete separable valued field k. We discuss the dynamics of the G-action on spaces of probability measures on algebraic G-varieties. We show that the stabilizers of measures are almost algebraic and the orbits are separated by open invariant sets. We discuss various applications, including existence results for algebraic representations of amenable ergodic actions. The latter provides an essential technical step in the recent generalization of Margulis-Zimmer super-rigidity phenomenon due to Bader and Furman.

Random Walks and Boundaries of CAT(0) Cubical complexes

We show under weak hypotheses that the pushforward $\{Z_no\}$ of a random-walk to a CAT(0) cube complex converges to a point on the boundary. We introduce the notion of squeezing points, which allows us to consider the convergence in either the Roller boundary or the visual boundary, with the appropriate hypotheses. This study allows us to show that any nonelementary action necessarily contains regular elements, that is, elements that act as rank-1 hyperbolic isometries in each irreducible factor of the essential core.
