Relative hyperbolicity for automorphisms of free products

We prove that for a free product GG with free factor system G\mathcal{G}, any automorphism ϕϕ preserving G\mathcal{G}, atoroidal (in a sense relative to G\mathcal{G}) and none of whose power send two different conjugates of subgroups in G\mathcal{G} on conjugates of themselves by the same element, gives rise to a semidirect product G⋊ϕZG\rtimes_ϕ\mathbb{Z} that is relatively hyperbolic with respect to suspensions of groups in G\mathcal{G}. We recover a theorem of Gautero-Lustig and Ghosh that, if GG is a free group, ϕϕ an automorphism of GG, and G\mathcal{G} is its family of polynomially growing subgroups, then the semidirect product by ϕϕ is relatively hyperbolic with respect to the suspensions of these subgroups. We apply the first result to the conjugacy problem for certain automorphisms (atoroidal and toral) of free products of abelian groups.

Deciding Isomorphy using Dehn fillings, the splitting case

We solve Dehn's isomorphism problem for virtually torsion-free relatively hyperbolic groups with nilpotent parabolic subgroups. We do so by reducing the isomorphism problem to three algorithmic problems in the parabolic subgroups, namely the isomorphism problem, separation of torsion (in their outer automorphism groups) by congruences, and the mixed Whitehead problem, an automorphism group orbit problem. The first step of the reduction is to compute canonical JSJ decompositions. Dehn fillings and the given solutions of the algorithmic problems in the parabolic groups are then used to decide if the graphs of groups have isomorphic vertex groups and, if so, whether a global isomorphism can be assembled. For the class of finitely generated nilpotent groups, we give solutions to these algorithmic problems by using the arithmetic nature of these groups and of their automorphism groups.

Dehn filling Dehn twists

Let Σg,pΣ_{g,p} be the genus--gg oriented surface with pp punctures, with either g>0g>0 or p>3p>3. We show that MCG(Σg,p)/DTMCG(Σ_{g,p})/DT is acylindrically hyperbolic where DTDT is the normal subgroup of the mapping class group MCG(Σg,p)MCG(Σ_{g,p}) generated by KthK^{th} powers of Dehn twists about curves in Σg,pΣ_{g,p} for suitable KK. Moreover, we show that in low complexity MCG(Σg,p)/DTMCG(Σ_{g,p})/DT is in fact hyperbolic. In particular, for 3g−3+p≤23g-3+p\leq 2, we show that the mapping class group MCG(Σg,p)MCG(Σ_{g,p}) is fully residually non-elementary hyperbolic and admits an affine isometric action with unbounded orbits on some LqL^q space. Moreover, if every hyperbolic group is residually finite, then every convex-cocompact subgroup of MCG(Σg,p)MCG(Σ_{g,p}) is separable. The aforementioned results follow from general theorems about composite rotating families that come from a collection of subgroups of vertex stabilisers for the action of a group GG on a hyperbolic graph XX. We give conditions ensuring that the graph X/NX/N is again hyperbolic and various properties of the action of GG on XX persist for the action of G/NG/N on X/NX/N.

Property PnaiveP_{naive} for acylindrically hyperbolic groups

We prove that every acylindrically hyperbolic group that has no non-trivial finite normal subgroup satisfies a strong ping pong property, the PnaiveP_{naive} property: for any finite collection of elements h1,…,hkh_1, \dots, h_k, there exists another element γ≠1γ\neq 1 such that for all ii, ⟨hi,γ⟩=⟨hi⟩∗⟨γ⟩\langle h_i, γ\rangle = \langle h_i \rangle* \langle γ\rangle. We also obtain that if a collection of subgroups H1,…,HkH_1, \dots, H_k is a hyperbolically embedded collection, then there is γ≠1γ\neq 1 such that for all ii, ⟨Hi,γ⟩=Hi∗⟨γ⟩\langle H_i, γ\rangle = H_i * \langle γ\rangle.

On suspensions, and conjugacy of hyperbolic automorphisms (and of a few more)

Part 1 : We remark that the conjugacy problem for pairs of hyperbolic au- tomorphisms of a finitely presented group (typically a free group) is decidable. The solution that we propose uses the isomorphism problem for the suspensions, and the study of their automorphism group. Part 2 : In a previous work (part 1), we remarked that the conjugacy problem for pairs of atoroidal automorphisms of a free group was solvable by mean of the isomorphism problem for hyperbolic groups and an orbit problem for the automorphism group of their suspensions (i.e. their semidirect product with Z for the relevant structural automorphism). We consider the same problem a few more automorphisms of free groups, those that produce relatively hyperbolic suspensions that do not split over a parabolic subgroup.

Spectral theorems for random walks on mapping class groups and Out(FN)\text{Out}(F_N)

We establish spectral theorems for random walks on mapping class groups of connected, closed, oriented, hyperbolic surfaces, and on Out(FN)\text{Out}(F_N). In both cases, we relate the asymptotics of the stretching factor of the diffeomorphism/automorphism obtained at time nn of the random walk to the Lyapunov exponent of the walk, which gives the typical growth rate of the length of a curve -- or of a conjugacy class in FNF_N -- under a random product of diffeomorphisms/automorphisms. In the mapping class group case, we first observe that the drift of the random walk in the curve complex is also equal to the linear growth rate of the translation lengths in this complex. By using a contraction property of typical Teichmüller geodesics, we then lift the above fact to the realization of the random walk on the Teichmüller space. For the case of Out(FN)\text{Out}(F_N), we follow the same procedure with the free factor complex in place of the curve complex, and the outer space in place of the Teichmüller space. A general criterion is given for making the lifting argument possible.

Foliations for solving equations in groups: free, virtually free, and hyperbolic groups

We give an algorithm for solving equations and inequations with rational constraints in virtually free groups. Our algorithm is based on Rips classification of measured band complexes. Using canonical representatives, we deduce an algorithm for solving equations and inequations in hyperbolic groups (maybe with torsion). Additionnally, we can deal with quasi-isometrically embeddable rational constraints.
