Global existence for quasilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition

We explore the global existence of solutions to systems of quasilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition when the initial data are sufficiently small. We adapt an approach of Keel, Smith, and Sogge, which relies on integrated local energy estimates and a weighted Sobolev estimate that yields decay in $|x|$, by using the $r^p$-weighted local energy estimates of Dafermos and Rodnianski. One advantage of this approach is that all time-dependent vector fields can be avoided and the proof can be readily adapted to address wave equations exterior to star-shaped obstacles.

Long-time existence for systems of quasilinear wave equations

We consider quasilinear wave equations in $(1+3)$-dimensions where the nonlinearity $F(u,u',u")$ is permitted to depend on the solution rather than just its derivatives. For scalar equations, if $(\partial_u^2 F)(0,0,0)=0$, almost global existence was established by Lindblad. We seek to show a related almost global existence result for coupled systems of such equations. To do so, we will rely upon a variant of the $r^p$-weighted local energy estimate of Dafermos and Rodnianski that includes a ghost weight akin to those used by Alinhac. The decay that is needed to close the argument comes from space-time Klainerman-Sobolev type estimates from the work of Metcalfe, Tataru, and Tohaneanu.

On a System of Weakly Null Semilinear Equations

We develop a new method for addressing certain weakly null systems of wave equations. This approach does not rely on Lorentz invariance nor on the use of null foliations, both of which restrict applications to, e.g., multiple speed systems. The proof uses a class of space-time Klainerman-Sobolev estimates of the first author, Tataru, and Tohaneanu, which pair nicely with local energy estimates that combine the $r^{p}$-weighted method of Dafermos and Rodnianski with the ghost weight method of Alinhac. We further refine the standard local energy estimate with a modification of the $\partial_{t} - \partial_{r}$ portion of the multiplier.

Localized energy estimates on Myers-Perry space-times

Localized energy estimates for the wave equation have been increasingly used to prove various other dispersive estimates. This article focuses on proving such localized energy estimates on $(1+4)$-dimensional Myers-Perry black hole backgrounds with small angular momenta. The Myers-Perry space-times are generalizations of higher dimensional Kerr backgrounds where additional planes of rotation are availabile while still maintaining axial symmetry. Once it is determined that all trapped geodesics have constant $r$, the method developed by Tataru and the fourth author, which perturbs off of the Schwarzschild case by using a pseudodifferential multiplier, can be adapted.

Sharp local smoothing for manifolds with smooth inflection transmission

We consider a family of spherically symmetric, asymptotically Euclidean manifolds with two trapped sets, one which is unstable and one which is semi-stable. The phase space structure is that of an inflection transmission set. We prove a sharp local smoothing estimate for the linear Schrödinger equation with a loss which depends on how flat the manifold is near each of the trapped sets. The result interpolates between the family of similar estimates in \cite{ChWu-lsm}. As a consequence of the techniques of proof, we also show a sharp high energy resolvent estimate with a polynomial loss depending on how flat the manifold is near each of the trapped sets.

The Strauss conjecture on Kerr black hole backgrounds

We examine solutions to semilinear wave equations on black hole backgrounds and give a proof of an analog of the Strauss conjecture on the Schwarzschild and Kerr, with small angular momentum, black hole backgrounds. The key estimates are a class of weighted Strichartz estimates, which are used near infinity where the metrics can be viewed as small perturbations of the Minkowski metric, and a localized energy estimate on the black hole background, which handles the behavior in the remaining compact set.

Nonlinear bound states on weakly homogeneous spaces

We prove the existence of ground state solutions for a class of nonlinear elliptic equations, arising in the production of standing wave solutions to an associated family of nonlinear Schrödinger equations. We examine two constrained minimization problems, which give rise to such solutions. One yields what we call $F_λ$-minimizers, the other energy minimizers. We produce such ground state solutions on a class of Riemannian manifolds called weakly homogeneous spaces, and establish smoothness, positivity, and decay properties. We also identify classes of Riemannian manifolds with no such minimizers, and classes for which essential uniqueness of positive solutions to the associated elliptic PDE fails.

Quasilinear Schrödinger equations I: Small data and quadratic interactions

In this article we prove local well-posedness in low-regularity Sobolev spaces for general quasilinear Schrödinger equations. These results represent improvements of the pioneering works by Kenig-Ponce-Vega and Kenig-Ponce-Rolvung-Vega, where viscosity methods were used to prove existence of solutions in very high regularity spaces. Our arguments here are purely dispersive. The function spaces in which we show existence are constructed in ways motivated by the results of Mizohata, Ichinose, Doi, and others, including the authors.

Quasilinear Schrödinger equations II: Small data and cubic nonlinearities

In part I of this project we examined low regularity local well-posedness for generic quasilinear Schrödinger equations with small data. This improved, in the small data regime, the preceding results of Kenig, Ponce, and Vega as well as Kenig, Ponce, Rolvung, and Vega. In the setting of quadratic interactions, the (translation invariant) function spaces which were utilized incorporated an $l^1$ summability over cubes in order to account for Mizohata's integrability condition, which is a necessary condition for the $L^2$ well-posedness for the linearized equation. For cubic interactions, this integrability condition meshes better with the inherent $L^2$ nature of the Schrödinger equation, and such summability is not required. Thus we are able to prove small data well-posedness in $H^s$ spaces.

The lifespan for 3-dimensional quasilinear wave equations in exterior domains

This article focuses on long-time existence for quasilinear wave equations with small initial data in exterior domains. The nonlinearity is permitted to fully depend on the solution at the quadratic level, rather than just the first and second derivatives of the solution. The corresponding lifespan bound in the boundaryless case is due to Lindblad, and Du and Zhou first proved such long-time existence exterior to star-shaped obstacles. Here we relax the hypothesis on the geometry and only require that there is a sufficiently rapid decay of local energy for the linear homogeneous wave equation, which permits some domains that contain trapped rays. The key step is to prove useful energy estimates involving the scaling vector field for which the approach of the second author and Sogge provides guidance.

Price's Law on Nonstationary Spacetimes

In this article we study the pointwise decay properties of solutions to the wave equation on a class of nonstationary asymptotically flat backgrounds in three space dimensions. Under the assumption that uniform energy bounds and a weak form of local energy decay hold forward in time we establish a $t^{-3}$ local uniform decay rate (Price's law \cite{MR0376103}) for linear waves. As a corollary, we also prove Price's law for certain small perturbations of the Kerr metric. This result was previously established by the second author in \cite{Tat} on stationary backgrounds. The present work was motivated by the problem of nonlinear stability of the Kerr/Schwarzschild solutions for the vacuum Einstein equations, which seems to require a more robust approach to proving linear decay estimates.

Localized energy estimates for wave equations on high dimensional Schwarzschild space-times

The localized energy estimate for the wave equation is known to be a fairly robust measure of dispersion. Recent analogs on the $(1+3)$-dimensional Schwarzschild space-time have played a key role in a number of subsequent results, including a proof of Price's law. In this article, we explore similar localized energy estimates for wave equations on $(1+n)$-dimensional hyperspherical Schwarzschild space-times.

Wave packet parametrices for evolutions governed by PDO's with rough symbols

In this note, we consider wave packet parametrices for Schrodinger-like evolution equations. Under an integrability condition along the flow, we prove that the flow is then globally well-defined and bilipschitz. Under an additional smallness assumption, we prove that the kernel of the phase space operator decays rapidly away from the graph of the Hamilton flow. This can be used to prove that smoothness is preserved for finite times by the flow of the equation.

On Abstract Strichartz Estimates and the Strauss Conjecture for Nontrapping Obstacles

The purpose of this paper is to show how local energy decay estimates for certain linear wave equations involving compact perturbations of the standard Laplacian lead to optimal global existence theorems for the corresponding small amplitude nonlinear wave equations with power nonlinearities. To achieve this goal, at least for spatial dimensions $n=3$ and 4, we shall show how the aforementioned linear decay estimates can be combined with "abstract Strichartz" estimates for the free wave equation to prove corresponding estimates for the perturbed wave equation when $n\ge3$. As we shall see, we are only partially successful in the latter endeavor when the dimension is equal to two, and therefore, at present, our applications to nonlinear wave equations in this case are limited.

Strichartz estimates on Schwarzschild black hole backgrounds

We study dispersive properties for the wave equation in the Schwarzschild space-time. The first result we obtain is a local energy estimate. This is then used, following the spirit of earlier work of Metcalfe-Tataru, in order to establish global-in-time Strichartz estimates. A considerable part of the paper is devoted to a precise analysis of solutions near the trapping region, namely the photon sphere.

Concerning the Strauss conjecture and almost global existence for nonlinear Dirichlet-wave equations in 4-dimensions

We show the obstacle version of the Strauss conjecture holds when the spatial dimension is equal to 4. We also show that an almost global existence theorem of Hörmander for (4+1)-dimensional Minkowski space holds in the obstacle setting. We use weighed space-time variants of the energy inequality and a variant of the classical Hardy inequality.

Paraproducts in One and Several Parameters

For multiparameter bilinear paraproduct operators $B$ we prove the estimate $$ B: L^p X L^q --> L^r, 1<p,q\le{}\infty. $$ Here, $1/p+1/q=1/r$ and special attention is paid to the case of $0<r<1$. (Note that the families of multiparameter paraproducts are much richer than in the one parameter case.) These estimates are the essential step in the version of the multiparameter Coifman-Meyer theorem proved by C. Muscalu, J. Pipher, T. Tao, and C. Thiele. We offer a different proof of these inequalities.
