Uniform boundedness for algebraic groups and Lie groups

Abstract

Let GG be a semisimple linear algebraic group over a field kk and let G+(k)G^+(k) be the subgroup generated by the subgroups Ru(Q)(k)R_u(Q)(k), where QQ ranges over all the minimal kk-parabolic subgroups QQ of GG. We prove that if G+(k)G^+(k) is bounded then it is uniformly bounded. Under extra assumptions we get explicit bounds for Δ(G+(k))Δ(G^+(k)): we prove that if kk is algebraically closed then Δ(G+(k))≤4 rank GΔ(G^+(k))\leq 4\, {\rm rank}\,G, and if GG is split over kk then Δ(G+(k))≤28 rank GΔ(G^+(k))\leq 28\, {\rm rank}\,G. We deduce some analogous results for real and complex semisimple Lie groups.
