Topological reconstruction theorems for varieties

We study Torelli-type theorems in the Zariski topology for varieties of dimension at least 2, over arbitrary fields. In place of the Hodge structure, we use the linear equivalence relation on Weil divisors. Using this setup, we prove a universal Torelli theorem in the sense of Bogomolov and Tschinkel. The proofs rely heavily on new variants of the classical Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry of Veblen and Young. For proper normal varieties over uncountable algebraically closed fields of characteristic 0, we show that the Zariski topological space can be used to recover the linear equivalence relation on divisors. As a consequence, we show that the underlying scheme of any such variety is uniquely determined by its Zariski topological space. We use this to prove a topological version of Gabriel's theorem, stating that a proper normal variety over an uncountable algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 is determined by its category of constructible abelian étale sheaves. We also discuss a conjecture in arbitrary characteristic, relating the Zariski topological space to the perfection of a proper normal variety.

Remarks on degenerations of hyper-Kähler manifolds

Using the Minimal Model Program, any degeneration of K-trivial varieties can be arranged to be in a Kulikov type form, i.e. with trivial relative canonical divisor and mild singularities. In the hyper-Kähler setting, we can then deduce a finiteness statement for monodromy acting on $H^2$, once one knows that one component of the central fiber is not uniruled. Independently of this, using deep results from the geometry of hyper-Kähler manifolds, we prove that a finite monodromy projective degeneration of hyper-Kähler manifolds has a smooth filling (after base change and birational modifications). As a consequence of these two results, we prove a generalization of Huybrechts' theorem about birational versus deformation equivalence, allowing singular central fibers. As an application, we give simple proofs for the deformation type of certain geometric constructions of hyper-Kähler manifolds (e.g. Debarre--Voisin or Laza--Saccà--Voisin). In a slightly different direction, we establish some basic properties (dimension and rational homology type) for the dual complex of a Kulikov type degeneration of hyper-Kähler manifolds.

Quadratic families of elliptic curves and unirationality of degree 1 conic bundles

We consider elliptic curves whose coefficients are degree 2 polynomials in a variable t. We prove that for infinitely many values of t the resulting elliptic curve has rank at least 1. All such curves together form an algebraic surface which is birational to a conic bundle with 7 singular fibers. The main step of the proof is to show that such conic bundles are unirational. V.2: Main theorem is corrected for small finite fields.

Quadratic solutions of quadratic forms

We study solutions of a homogeneous quadratic equation $q(x_0,\dots, x_n)=0$, defined over a field $K$, where the $x_i$ are themselves homogeneous polynomials of some degree $d$ in $r+1$ variables. Equivalently, we are looking at rational maps from projective $r$-space $P^r$ to a quadric hypersurface $Q$, defined over a field $K$. The space of maps of $P^1$ to a quadric $Q$ is stably birational to $Q$ if $d$ is even and to the orthogonal Grassmannian of lines in $Q$ if $d$ is odd. Most of the paper is devoted to obtaining similar descriptions for the spaces parametrizing maps of $P^2$ to quadrics, given by degree 2 polynomials. The most interesting case is 4-dimensional quadrics when there are 5 irreducible components. The methods are mostly classical, involving the Veronese surface, its equations and projections. In the real case, these results provide some of the last steps of a project, started by Kummer and Darboux, to describe all surfaces that contain at least 2 circles through every point.

The dualizing sheaf on first-order deformations of toric surface singularities

We explicitly describe infintesimal deformations of cyclic quotient singularities that satisfy one of the deformation conditions introduced by Wahl, Kollár-Shepherd-Barron and Viehweg. The conclusion is that in many cases these three notions are different from each other. In particular, we see that while the KSB and the Viehweg versions of the moduli space of surfaces of general type have the same underlying reduced subscheme, their infinitesimal structures are different.

Semi-stable extensions over 1-dimensional bases

Given a family of Calabi-Yau varieties over the punctured disc or over the field of Laurent series, we show that, after a finite base change, the family can be exended across the origin while keeping the canonical class trivial. More generally, we prove similar extension results for families whose log-canonical class is semi-ample. We use these to show that the Berkovich and essential skeleta agree for smooth varieties over ${\mathbb C}((t))$ with semi-ample canonical class.

The dual complex of Calabi--Yau pairs

A log Calabi--Yau pair consists of a proper variety $X$ and a divisor $D$ on it such that $K_X+D$ is numerically trivial. A folklore conjecture predicts that the dual complex of $D$ is homeomorphic to the quotient of a sphere by a finite group. The main result of the paper shows that the fundamental group of the dual complex of $D$ is a quotient of the fundamental group of the smooth locus of $X$, hence its pro-finite completion is finite. This leads to a positive answer in dimension $\leq 4$. We also study the dual complex of degenerations of Calabi--Yau varieties. The key technical result we prove is that, after a volume preserving birational equivalence, the transform of $D$ supports an ample divisor.

Variants of normality for Noetherian schemes

This note presents a uniform treatment of normality and three of its variants---topological, weak and seminormality---for Noetherian schemes. The key is to define these notions for pairs $(Z, X)$ consisting of a (not necessarily reduced) scheme $X$ and a closed, nowhere dense subscheme $Z$. An advantage of the new definitions is that, unlike the usual absolute ones, they are preserved by completions. This shortens some of the proofs and leads to more general results. Version 2: small changes.

Durfee's conjecture on the signature of smoothings of surface singularities

In 1978 Durfee conjectured various inequalities between the signature and the geometric genus of a normal surface singularity. Since then a few counter examples have been found and positive results established in some special cases. We prove a `strong' Durfee--type inequality for any smoothing of a Gorenstein singularity, provided that the intersection form the resolution is unimodular, and the conjectured `weak' inequality for all hypersurface singularities and for sufficiently large multiplicity strict complete intersections. The proofs establish general inequalities valid for any normal surface singularity.

The dual complex of singularities

The dual complex of a singularity is defined, up-to homotopy, using resolutions of singularities. In many cases, for instance for isolated singularities, we identify and study a "minimal" representative of the homotopy class that is well defined up-to piecewise linear homeomorphism. This is derived from a more global result concerning dual complexes of dlt pairs. As an application, we also show that the dual complex of a log terminal singularity as well as the one of a simple normal crossing degeneration of a family of rationally connected manifolds are contractible.

Continuous rational functions on real and $p$-adic varieties II

This note replaces two earlier preprints (1101.3737 by Kollár) and (1211.6681 by Nowak). It studies, and partially solves, 3 elementary questions about continuous rational functions on real (and p-adic) algebraic varieties: Can one restrict such a function to a subvariety? Can one extend such a function from a subvariety? Which linear equations can be solved using such functions? v.2: Section 3 simplified and typos corrected.

Holomorphic arcs on analytic spaces

Let X be a complex analytic space. A short analytic arc is a holomorphic map of the closed unit disc to X such that only the origin is mapped to a singular point. In contrast with the space of formal arcs studied by Nash, the moduli space of short analytic arcs usually has infinitely many connected components. We describe these for surface singularities, in terms of certain conjugacy classes of the fundamental group of the link. For quotient singularities (in any dimension), this gives a concrete realization of the McKay correspondence. Our results also give new connections between a surface cusp singularity, its dual and hyperbolic Inoue surfaces. version 2: References added.

Links of complex analytic singularities

This is a part survey part research paper studying the local topology of complex analytic spaces. We review and strengthen the results of Kapovich--Kollár "Fundamental groups of links of isolated singularities" (1109.4047) and incorporate the paper "Dual graphs of exceptional divisors" (1203.2640) into the current one. A new result is the characterization of the fundamental group of links of Cohen-Macaulay singularities. The last section lists numerous open problems and conjectures. Version 2: Questions 62--65 revised following comments of Shaneson and Maxim. Version 3: Many small changes, especially in section about Questions and Problems.

Semi-continuity of complex singularity exponents and Kähler-Einstein metrics on Fano orbifolds

We introduce complex singularity exponents of plurisubharmonic functions and prove a general semi-continuity result for them. This concept contains as a special case several similar concepts which have been considered e.g. by Arnold and Varchenko, mostly for the study of hypersurface singularities. The plurisubharmonic version is somehow based on a reduction to the algebraic case, but it also takes into account more quantitative informations of great interest for complex analysis and complex differential geometry. We give as an application a new derivation of criteria for the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on certain Fano orbifolds, following Nadel's original ideas (but with a drastic simplication in the technique, once the semi-continuity result is taken for granted). In this way, 3 new examples of rigid Kähler-Einstein Del Pezzo surfaces with quotient singularities are obtained.

Dual graphs of exceptional divisors

Let p be a singular point of a variety. Consider a resolution where the preimage of p is a simple normal crossing divisor E. The combinatorial structure of E is described by a cell complex D(E), called the dual graph or dual complex of E. It is known that the homotopy type of D(E) depends only on p, not on the resolution chosen. We prove that this homotopy type can be arbitrary. We also describe which homotopy types can be obtained from rational singularities.

Fundamental groups of links of isolated singularities

We study fundamental groups of projective varieties with normal crossing singularities and of germs of complex singularities. We prove that for every finitely-presented group G there is a complex projective surface S with simple normal crossing singularities only, so that the fundamental group of S is isomorphic to G. We use this to construct 3-dimensional isolated complex singularities so that the fundamental group of the link is isomorphic to G. Lastly, we prove that a finitely-presented group G is Q-superperfect (has vanishing rational homology in dimensions 1 and 2) if and only if G is isomorphic to the fundamental group of the link of a rational 6-dimensional complex singularity.

Seminormal log centers and deformations of pairs

We show that some properties of log canonical centers of a log canonical pair (X,D) also hold for certain subvarieties that are close to being a log canonical center. As a consequence, we obtain that if one works with deformations of pairs (X, D) where all the coefficients of D are bigger than 1/2, then one need not worry about embedded points on D. Continuous closure of sheaves

We give a purely algebraic construction of the continuous closure of any finitely generated torsion free module; a concept first studied by H.~Brenner and M.~Hochster. The construction implies that, at least in characteristic 0, taking continuous closure commutes with flat morphisms whose fibers are semi-normal. This implies that the continuous closure of a coherent ideal sheaf is again a coherent ideal sheaf (both in the Zariski and in the étale topologies) and it commutes with field extensions.

Log canonical singularities are Du Bois

A recurring difficulty in the Minimal Model Program is that while log terminal singularities are quite well behaved (for instance, they are rational), log canonical singularities are much more complicated; they need not even be Cohen-Macaulay. The aim of this paper is to prove that log canonical singularities are Du Bois. The concept of Du Bois singularities, introduced by Steenbrink, is a weakening of rationality. We also prove flatness of the cohomology sheaves of the relative dualizing complex of a projective family with Du Bois fibers. This implies that each connected component of the moduli space of stable log varieties parametrizes either only Cohen-Macaulay or only non-Cohen-Macaulay objects.

Is there a topological Bogomolov--Miyaoka--Yau inequality?

The aim of this paper is to consider a possible extension of the Bogomolov--Miyaoka--Yau inequality to differentiable orbifolds. The conjectured extension is related to the Montgomery--Yang problem about circle actions on the 5--sphere and also to the H--cobordism of Seifert fibered 3--manifolds. Related conjectures on algebraic surfaces with quotient singularities which have the same rational homology as the projective plane are also considered. Finally we give such examples which are birational to the projective plane yet have ample canonical class.

Holonomy groups of stable vector bundles

We define the notion of holonomy group for a stable vector bundle F on a variety in terms of the Narasimhan--Seshadri unitary representation of its restriction to curves. Next we relate the holonomy group to the minimal structure group and to the decomposition of tensor powers of F. Finally we illustrate the principle that either the holonomy is large or there is a clear geometric reason why it should be small.
