Local Newton nondegenerate Weil divisors in toric varieties

We introduce and develop the theory of Newton nondegenerate local Weil divisors $(X,0)$ in toric affine varieties. We characterize in terms of the toric combinatorics of the Newton diagram different properties of such singular germs: normality, Gorenstein property, or being an Cartier divisor in the ambient space. We discuss certain properties of their (canonical) resolution $\tilde{X}\to X $ and the corresponding canonical divisor. We provide combinatorial formulae for the delta--invariant $δ(X,0)$ and for the cohomology groups $H^i(\tilde X,\mathcal{O}_{\tilde X})$ for $i>0$. In the case $\dim(X,0)=2$, we provide the (canonical) resolution graph from the Newton diagram and we also prove that if such a Weil divisor is normal and Gorenstein, and the link is a rational homology sphere, then the geometric genus is given by the minimal path cohomology, a topological invariant of the link.

Local invariants of minimal generic curves on rational surfaces

Let (C,0) be a reduced curve germ in a normal surface singularity (X,0). The main goal is to recover the delta invariant of the abstract curve (C,0) from the topology of the embedding. We give explicit formulae whenever (C,0) is minimal generic and (X,0) is rational (as a continuation of previous works of the authors). Additionally we prove that if (X,0) is a quotient singularity, then the delta invariant of (C,0) only admits the values r-1 or r, where r is the number or irreducible components of (C,0). (r-1 realizes the extremal lower bound, valid only for `ordinary r-tuples'.)

The delta invariant of curves on rational surfaces II: Poincaré series and topological aspects

In this article we study abstract and embedded invariants of reduced curve germs via topological techniques. One of the most important numerical analytic invariants of an abstract curve is its delta invariant. Our primary goal is to develop delta invariant formulae for curves embedded in rational singularities in terms of embedded data. The topological machinery not only produces formulae, but it also creates deep connections with the theory of (analytical and topological) multivariable Poincaré series.

Lattice and Heegaard-Floer homologies of algebraic links

We compute the Heegaard-Floer link homology of algebraic links in terms of the multivariate Hilbert function of the corresponding plane curve singularities. The main result of the paper identifies four homologies: (a) the Heegaard-Floer link homology of the local embedded link of the germ, (b) the lattice homology associated with the Hilbert function, (c) the homologies of the projectivized complements of local hyperplane arrangements cut out from the local algebra, and (d) a certain variant of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of these local arrangements. In particular, the Poincaré polynomials of all these homology groups are the same, and we also show that they agree with the coefficients of the motivic Poincaré series of the singularity.

Links of rational singularities, L-spaces and LO fundamental groups

We prove that the link of a complex normal surface singularity is an L--space if and only if the singularity is rational. This via a recent result of Hanselman, J. Rasmussen, S. D. Rasmussen and Watson (proving the conjecture of Boyer, Gordon and Watson), shows that a singularity link is not rational if and only if its fundamental group is left-orderable if and only if it admits a coorientable taut foliation.

Seiberg-Witten invariant of the universal abelian cover of $S^3_{-p/q}(K)$

We prove an additivity property for the normalized Seiberg-Witten invariants with respect to the universal abelian cover of those 3-manifolds, which are obtained via negative rational Dehn surgeries along connected sum of algebraic knots. Although the statement is purely topological, we use the theory of complex singularities in several steps of the proof. This topological covering additivity property can be compared with certain analytic properties of normal surface singularities, especially with functorial behaviour of the (equivariant) geometric genus of singularities. We present several examples in order to find the validity limits of the proved property, one of them shows that the covering additivity property is not true for negative definite plumbed 3-manifolds in general.

Durfee's conjecture on the signature of smoothings of surface singularities

In 1978 Durfee conjectured various inequalities between the signature and the geometric genus of a normal surface singularity. Since then a few counter examples have been found and positive results established in some special cases. We prove a `strong' Durfee--type inequality for any smoothing of a Gorenstein singularity, provided that the intersection form the resolution is unimodular, and the conjectured `weak' inequality for all hypersurface singularities and for sufficiently large multiplicity strict complete intersections. The proofs establish general inequalities valid for any normal surface singularity.

Immersions associated with holomorphic germs

A holomorphic germ Φ: (C^2, 0) \to (C^3, 0), singular only at the origin, induces at the links level an immersion of S^3 into S^5. The regular homotopy type of such immersions are determined by their Smale invariant, defined up to a sign ambiguity. In this paper we fix a sign of the Smale invariant and we show that for immersions induced by holomorphic gems the sign-refined Smale invariant is the negative of the number of cross caps appearing in a generic perturbation of Φ. Using the algebraic method we calculate it for some families of singularities, among others the A-D-E quotient singularities. As a corollary, we obtain that the regular homotopy classes which admit holomorphic representatives are exactly those, which have non-positive sign-refined Smale invariant. This answers a question of Mumford regarding exactly this correspondence. We also determine the sign ambiguity in the topological formulae of Hughes-Melvin and Ekholm-Szucs connecting the Smale invariant with (singular) Seifert surfaces. In the case of holomorphic realizations of Seifert surfaces, we also determine their involved invariants in terms of holomorhic geometry.

Lattice cohomology and rational cuspidal curves

We show a counterexample to a conjecture of de Bobadilla, Luengo, Melle-Hernández and Némethi on rational cuspidal projective plane curves. The counterexample is a tricuspidal curve of degree 8. On the other hand, we show that if the number of cusps is at most 2, then the original conjecture can be deduced from the recent results of Borodzik and Livingston and (lattice cohomology) computations of Némethi and Román. Then we formulate a `simplified' (slightly weaker) version, more in the spirit of the motivation of the original conjecture (comparing index type numerical invariants), and we prove it for all currently known rational cuspidal curves. We make all these identities and inequalities more transparent in the language of lattice cohomology of surgery 3-manifolds $S^3_{-d}(K)$, where $K$ is a connected sum of algebraic knots $\{K_i\}_i$. Finally, we prove that the zeroth lattice cohomology of this surgery manifold depends only on the multiset of multiplicities occurring in the multiplicity sequences describing the algebraic knots $K_i$. This result is closely related to the lattice-cohomological reformulation of the above mentioned theorems and conjectures, and provides new computational and comparison procedures.

Morse theory for manifolds with boundary

We develop Morse theory for manifolds with boundary. Besides standard and expected facts like the handle cancellation theorem and the Morse lemma for manifolds with boundary, we prove that, under a topological assumption, a critical point in the interior of a Morse function can be moved to the boundary, where it splits into a pair of boundary critical points. As an application, we prove that every cobordism of manifolds with boundary splits as a union of left product cobordisms and right product cobordisms.

Holomorphic arcs on analytic spaces

Let X be a complex analytic space. A short analytic arc is a holomorphic map of the closed unit disc to X such that only the origin is mapped to a singular point. In contrast with the space of formal arcs studied by Nash, the moduli space of short analytic arcs usually has infinitely many connected components. We describe these for surface singularities, in terms of certain conjugacy classes of the fundamental group of the link. For quotient singularities (in any dimension), this gives a concrete realization of the McKay correspondence. Our results also give new connections between a surface cusp singularity, its dual and hyperbolic Inoue surfaces. version 2: References added.

Links of singularities up to regular homotopy

The abstract link L_d of the complex isolated singularity x^2 + y^2 + z^2 + v^{2d} = 0 is diffeomorphic to S^3 \times S^2. We classify the embedded links of these singularities up to regular homotopies precomposed with diffeomorphisms of S^3 \times S^2. Let us denote by i_d the inclusion of L_d in S^7. We show that for arbitrary diffeomorphisms φ_d of S^3 \times S^2 with L_d the compositions i_d \circ φ_d are image regularly homotopic for two values d_1 and d_2 if and only if d_1-d_2 is even.

Reduction theorem for lattice cohomology

The lattice cohomology of a plumbed 3--manifold $M$ associated with a connected negative definite plumbing graph is an important tool in the study of topological properties of $M$, and in the comparison of the topological properties with analytic ones when $M$ is realized as complex analytic singularity link. By definition, its computation is based on the (Riemann--Roch) weights of the lattice points of $\Z^s$, where $s$ is the number of vertices of the plumbing graph. The present article reduces the rank of this lattice to the number of `bad' vertices of the graph. (Usually the geometry/topology of $M$ is codified exactly by these `bad' vertices via surgery or other constructions. Their number measures how far is the plumbing graph from a rational one.) The effect of the reduction appears also at the level of certain multivariable (topological Poincaré) series as well. Since from these series one can also read the Seiberg--Witten invariants, the reduction theorem provides new formulae for these invariants too. The reduction also implies the vanishing $\bH^q=0$ of the lattice cohomology for $q\geq ν$, where $ν$ is the number of `bad' vertices. (This bound is sharp.)

The Hodge spectrum of analytic germs on isolated surface singularities

We use topological methods to prove a semicontinuity property of the Hodge spectra for analytic germs defined on an isolated surface singularity. For this we introduce an analogue of the Seifert matrix (the fractured Seifert matrix), and of the Levine--Tristram signatures associated with it, defined for null-homologous links in arbitrary three dimensional manifolds. Moreover, we establish Murasugi type inequalities in the presence of cobordisms of links. It turns out that the fractured Seifert matrix determines the Hodge spectrum and the Murasugi type inequalities can be read as spectrum semicontinuity inequalities.

Ehrhart theory of polytopes and Seiberg-Witten invariants of plumbed 3-manifolds

Let M be a rational homology sphere plumbed 3-manifold associated with a connected negative definite plumbing graph. We show that its Seiberg-Witten invariants equal certain coefficients of an equivariant multivariable Ehrhart polynomial. For this, we construct the corresponding polytopes from the plumbing graphs together with an action of the first homology of M, and we develop Ehrhart theory for them. At an intermediate level we define the `periodic constant' of multivariable series and establish their properties. In this way, one identifies the Seiberg-Witten invariant of a plumbed 3-manifold, the periodic constant of its `combinatorial zeta-function', and a coefficient of the associated Ehrhart polynomial. We make detailed presentations for graphs with at most two nodes. The two node case has surprising connections with the theory of affine monoids of rank two.

A counterexample to Durfee conjecture

An old conjecture of Durfee 1978 bounds the ratio of two basic invariants of complex isolated complete intersection surface singularities: the Milnor number and the singularity (or geometric) genus. We give a counterexample for the case of non-hypersurface complete intersections, and we formulate a weaker conjecture valid in arbitrary dimension and codimension. This weaker bound is asymptotically sharp. In this note we support the validity of the new proposed inequality by its verification in certain (homogeneous) cases. In our subsequent paper we will prove it for several other cases and we will provide a more comprehensive discussion.

Generalized Monodromy Conjecture in dimension two

The aim of the article is an extension of the Monodromy Conjecture of Denef and Loeser in dimension two, incorporating zeta functions with differential forms and targeting all monodromy eigenvalues, and also considering singular ambient spaces. That is, we treat in a conceptual unity the poles of the (generalized) topological zeta function and the monodromy eigenvalues associated with a complex analytic function germ f defined on a normal surface singularity (X,0). The article targets the `right' extension in the case when the link of (X,0) is a homology sphere. As a first step, we prove a splice decomposition formula for the topological zeta function Z(f,w;s) for any f and analytic differential form w, which will play the key technical localization tool in the later definitions and proofs. Then, we define a set of `allowed' differential forms via a local restriction along each splice component. For plane curves we show the following three guiding properties: (1) if s' is any pole of Z(f,w;s) with w allowed, then exp(2πis') is a monodromy eigenvalue of f; (2) the `standard' form is allowed; (3) every monodromy eigenvalue of f is obtained as in (1) for some allowed w and some s'. For general (X,0) we prove (1) unconditionally, and (2)-(3) under an additional (necessary) assumption, which generalizes the semigroup condition of Neumann-Wahl. Several examples illustrate the definitions and support the basic assumptions.

Heegaard Floer homologies for (+1) surgeries on torus knots

We compute the Heegaard Floer homology of $S^3_1(K)$ (the (+1) surgery on the torus knot $T_{p,q}$) in terms of the semigroup generated by $p$ and $q$, and we find a compact formula (involving Dedekind sums) for the corresponding Ozsvath--Szabo d-invariant. We relate the result to known knot invariants of $T_{p,q}$ as the genus and the Levine--Tristram signatures. Furthermore, we emphasize the striking resemblance between Heegaard Floer homologies of (+1) and (-1) surgeries on torus knots. This relation is best seen at the level of $τ$ functions.

The Seiberg-Witten invariants of negative definite plumbed 3-manifolds

We consider a connected negative definite plumbing graph, and we assume that the associated plumbed 3-manifold is a rational homology sphere. We provide two new combinatorial formulae for the Seiberg-Witten invariant of this manifold. The first one is the constant term of a `multivariable Hilbert polynomial', it reflects in a conceptual way the structure of the graph, and emphasizes the subtle parallelism between these topological invariants and the analytic invariants of normal surface singularities. The second formula realizes the Seiberg-Witten invariant as the normalized Euler characteristic of the lattice cohomology associated with the graph, supporting the conjectural connections between the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology, or the Heegaard-Floer homology, and the lattice cohomology.

Two exact sequences for lattice cohomology

We establish two exact sequences for the lattice cohomology associated with non-degenerate plumbing graphs. The first is the analogue of the surgery exact triangle proved by Ozsvath and Szabo for the Heegaard-Floer invariant HF^+; for the lattice cohomology over Z_2-coefficients it was proved by J. Greene. Here we prove it over the integers, and we supplement it by some additional properties valid for negative definite graphs. The second exact sequence is an adapted version which does not mix the classes of the characteristic elements (spin^c-structures); it was partially motivated by the surgery formula for the Seiberg-Witten invariant obtained by Braun and the author. For this we define the `relative lattice cohomology' and we also determine its Euler characteristic in terms of Seiberg-Witten invariants.
