On simple groups definable in some valued fields

We prove that non-abelian definable, definably simple groups in 1-h-minimal henselian valued fields are essentially already linear algebraic groups. Here, the group is assumed to live in the home sort. We have a similar result in pure algebraically closed valued fields of positive characteristic, under the additional assumption that the definable group is a subgroup of a linear algebraic group.

Bohr compactifications of groups and rings

We introduce and study model-theoretic connected components of rings as an analogue of model-theoretic connected components of definable groups. We develop their basic theory and use them to describe both the definable and classical Bohr compactifications of rings. We then use model-theoretic connected components to explicitly calculate Bohr compactifications of some classical matrix groups, such as the discrete Heisenberg group $UT_3(Z)$, the continuous Heisenberg group $UT_3(R)$, and, more generally, groups of upper unitriangular and invertible upper triangular matrices over unital rings.

On model-theoretic connected components in some group extensions

We analyze model-theoretic connected components in extensions of a given group by abelian groups which are defined by means of 2-cocycles with finite image. We characterize, in terms of these 2-cocycles, when the smallest type-definable subgroup of the corresponding extension differs from the smallest invariant subgroup. In some situations, we also describe the quotient of these two connected components. Using our general results about extensions of groups together with Matsumoto-Moore theory or various quasi-characters considered in bounded cohomology, we obtain new classes of examples of groups whose smallest type-definable subgroup of bounded index differs from the smallest invariant subgroup of bounded index. This includes the first known example of a group with this property found by Conversano and Pillay, namely the universal cover of SL2(R) (intepreted in a monster model), as well as various examples of different nature, e.g. some central extensions of free groups or of fundamental groups of closed orientable surfaces. We also obtain a variant of the example of Conversano and Pillay for SL2(Z) instead of SL2(R), which (as most of our examples) was not accessible by the previously known methods.

Absolute connectedness and classical groups

We introduce and develop the model-theoretic notions of absolute connectedness and type-absolute connectedness for groups. We prove that groups of rational points of split semisimple linear groups (that is, Chevalley groups) over arbitrary infinite fields are absolutely connected and characterize connected Lie groups which are type-absolutely connected. We prove that the class of type-absolutely connected group is exactly the class of discretely topologized groups with trivial Bohr compactification, that is the class of minimally almost periodic groups. As an application we generalize some results of Conversano-Pillay and construct a group $G$ where G^{00}/G^{\infty} is far from being abelian.

Boundedly simple groups of automorphisms of trees

A group is boundedly simple if, for some constant N, every nontrivial conjugacy class generates the whole group in N steps. For a large class of trees, Tits proved simplicity of a canonical subgroup of the automorphism group, which is generated by pointwise stabilizers of edges. We prove that only for uniform subdivisions of biregular trees are such groups boundedly simple. In fact these groups are 8-boundedly simple. As a consequence, we prove that if G is boundedly simple (or from a certain class K) and G acts by automorphisms on a tree, then G fixes some vertex of A, or stabilizes some end of A, or the smallest nonempty G-invariant subtree of A is a uniform subdivision of a biregular tree.

Model theoretic connected components of finitely generated nilpotent groups

We prove that for a finitely generated infinite nilpotent group G with a first order structure (G,*,...), the connected component G*0 of a sufficiently saturated extension G* of G exists and equals $\bigcap_{n\in\N} {g^n : g\in G^*}$. We construct a first order expansion of Z by a predicate (Z,+,P) such that the type-connected component Z*00_{\emptyset} is strictly smaller than Z*0. We generalize this to finitely generated virtually solvable groups. As a corollary of our construction we obtain an optimality result for the van der Waerden theorem.

On compactifications and the topological dynamics of definable groups

We discuss definable compactifications and topological dynamics. For G a group definable in some structure M, we define notions of "definable" compactification of G and "definable" action of G on a compact space X (definable G-flow), where the latter is under a definability of types assumption on M. We describe the universal definable compactification of G as G*/G*00_M and the universal definable G-ambit as the type space S_{G}(M). We also prove existence and uniqueness of "universal minimal definable G-flows", and discuss issues of amenability and extreme amenability in this definable category, with a characterization of the latter. For the sake of completeness we also describe the universal (Bohr) compactification and universal G-ambit in model-theoretic terms, when G is a topological group (although it is essentially well-known).
