Involutions, obstructions and mirror symmetry

Consider a Maslov zero Lagrangian submanifold diffeomorphic to a Lie group on which an anti-symplectic involution acts by the inverse map of the group. We show that the Fukaya $A_\infty$ endomorphism algebra of such a Lagrangian is quasi-isomorphic to its de Rham cohomology tensored with the Novikov field. In particular, it is unobstructed, formal, and its Floer and de Rham cohomologies coincide. Our result implies that the smooth fibers of a large class of singular Lagrangian fibrations are unobstructed and their Floer and de Rham cohomologies coincide. This is a step in the SYZ and family Floer cohomology approaches to mirror symmetry. More generally, our result continues to hold if the Lagrangian has cohomology the free graded algebra on a graded vector space $V$ concentrated in odd degree, and the anti-symplectic involution acts on the cohomology of the Lagrangian by the induced map of negative the identity on $V.$ It suffices for the Maslov class to vanish modulo $4.$

A reverse isoperimetric inequality for J-holomorphic curves

We prove that the length of the boundary of a $J$-holomorphic curve with Lagrangian boundary conditions is dominated by a constant times its area. The constant depends on the symplectic form, the almost complex structure, the Lagrangian boundary conditions and the genus. A similar result holds for the length of the real part of a real $J$-holomorphic curve. The infimum over $J$ of the constant properly normalized gives an invariant of Lagrangian submanifolds. We calculate this invariant to be $2π$ for the Lagrangian submanifold $\mathbb R P^n \subset \mathbb C P^n.$ We apply our result to prove compactness of moduli of $J$-holomorphic maps to non-compact target spaces that are asymptotically exact. In a different direction, our result implies the adic convergence of the superpotential.

A Riemannian Approach to Reduced Plate, Shell, and Rod Theories

We derive a dimensionally-reduced limit theory for an $n$-dimensional nonlinear elastic body that is slender along $k$ dimensions. The starting point is to view an elastic body as an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold together with a not necessarily isometric $W^{1,2}$-immersion in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space. The equilibrium configuration is the immersion that minimizes the average discrepancy between the induced and intrinsic metrics. The dimensionally reduced limit theory views the elastic body as a $k$-dimensional Riemannian manifold along with an isometric $W^{2,2}$-immersion in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space and linear data in the normal directions. The equilibrium configuration minimizes a functional depending on the average covariant derivatives of the linear data. The dimensionally-reduced limit is obtained using a $Γ$-convergence approach. The limit includes as particular cases plate, shell, and rod theories. It applies equally to "standard" elasticity and to "incompatible" elasticity, thus including as particular cases so-called non-Euclidean plate, shell, and rod theories.

Curvature of the space of positive Lagrangians

A Lagrangian submanifold in an almost Calabi-Yau manifold is called positive if the real part of the holomorphic volume form restricted to it is positive. An exact isotopy class of positive Lagrangian submanifolds admits a natural Riemannian metric. We compute the Riemann curvature of this metric and show all sectional curvatures are non-positive. The motivation for our calculation comes from mirror symmetry. Roughly speaking, an exact isotopy class of positive Lagrangians corresponds under mirror symmetry to the space of Hermitian metrics on a holomorphic vector bundle. The latter space is an infinite-dimensional analog of the non-compact symmetric space dual to the unitary group, and thus has non-positive curvature.

Metric Description of Defects in Amorphous Materials

Classical elasticity is concerned with bodies that can be modeled as smooth manifolds endowed with a reference metric that represents local equilibrium distances between neighboring material elements. The elastic energy associated with a configuration of a body in classical elasticity is the sum of local contributions that arise from a discrepancy between the actual metric and the reference metric. In contrast, the modeling of defects in solids has traditionally involved extra structure on the material manifold, notably torsion to quantify the density of dislocations and non-metricity to represent the density of point defects. We show that all the classical defects can be described within the framework of classical elasticity using tensor fields that only assume a metric structure. Specifically, bodies with singular defects can be viewed as affine manifolds; both disclinations and dislocations are captured by the monodromy that maps curves that surround the loci of the defects into affine transformations. Finally, we show that two dimensional defects with trivial monodromy are purely local in the sense that if we remove from the manifold a compact set that contains the locus of the defect, the punctured manifold can be isometrically embedded in Euclidean space.

The Calabi homomorphism, Lagrangian paths and special Lagrangians

Let $\OO$ be an orbit of the group of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms acting on the space of Lagrangian submanifolds of a symplectic manifold $(X,ω).$ We define a functional $\CC:\OO \to \R$ for each differential form $β$ of middle degree satisfying $β\wedge ω= 0$ and an exactness condition. If the exactness condition does not hold, $\CC$ is defined on the universal cover of $\OO.$ A particular instance of $\CC$ recovers the Calabi homomorphism. If $β$ is the imaginary part of a holomorphic volume form, the critical points of $\CC$ are special Lagrangian submanifolds. We present evidence that $\CC$ is related by mirror symmetry to a functional introduced by Donaldson to study Einstein-Hermitian metrics on holomorphic vector bundles. In particular, we show that $\CC$ is convex on an open subspace $\OO^+ \subset \OO.$ As a prerequisite, we define a Riemannian metric on $\OO^+$ and analyze its geodesics. Finally, we discuss a generalization of the flux homomorphism to the space of Lagrangian submanifolds, and a Lagrangian analog of the flux conjecture.

Symplectic cohomology and q-intersection numbers

Given a symplectic cohomology class of degree 1, we define the notion of an equivariant Lagrangian submanifold. The Floer cohomology of equivariant Lagrangian submanifolds has a natural endomorphism, which induces a grading by generalized eigenspaces. Taking Euler characteristics with respect to the induced grading yields a deformation of the intersection number. Dehn twists act naturally on equivariant Lagrangians. Cotangent bundles and Lefschetz fibrations give fully computable examples. A key step in computations is to impose the "dilation" condition stipulating that the BV operator applied to the symplectic cohomology class gives the identity. Equivariant Lagrangians mirror equivariant objects of the derived category of coherent sheaves.

The open Gromov-Witten-Welschinger theory of blowups of the projective plane

We compute the Welschinger invariants of blowups of the projective plane at an arbitrary conjugation invariant configuration of points. Specifically, open analogues of the WDVV equation and Kontsevich-Manin axioms lead to a recursive algorithm that reconstructs all the invariants from a small set of known invariants. Example computations are given, including the non-del Pezzo case.

Symmetries of Lagrangian fibrations

We construct fiber-preserving anti-symplectic involutions for a large class of symplectic manifolds with Lagrangian torus fibrations. In particular, we treat the K3 surface and the quintic threefold. We interpret our results as corroboration of the view that in homological mirror symmetry, an anti-symplectic involution is the mirror of duality. In the same setting, we construct fiber-preserving symplectomorphisms that can be interpreted as the mirror to twisting by a holomorphic line bundle.
