Transversals as generating sets in finitely generated groups

We explore transversals of finite index subgroups of finitely generated groups. We show that when HH is a subgroup of a rank nn group GG and HH has index at least nn in GG then we can construct a left transversal for HH which contains a generating set of size nn for GG, and that the construction is algorithmic when GG is finitely presented. We also show that, in the case where GG has rank n≤3n \leq3, there is a simultaneous left-right transversal for HH which contains a generating set of size nn for GG. We finish by showing that if HH is a subgroup of a rank nn group GG with index less than 3⋅2n−13 \cdot 2^{n-1}, and HH contains no primitive elements of GG, then HH is normal in GG and G/H≅C2nG/H \cong C_{2}^{n}.

Non Hyperbolic Free-By-Cyclic and One-Relator Groups

We show that the free-by-cyclic groups of the form F(2)-by-Z act properly cocompactly on CAT(0) square complexes. We also show using generalised Baumslag-Solitar groups that all known groups defined by a 2-generator 1-relator presentation are either SQ-universal or are cyclic or isomorphic to BS(1,j). Finally we consider free-by-cyclic groups which are not relatively hyperbolic with respect to any collection of subgroups.

An explicit upper bound for the Helfgott delta in SL(2,p)

Helfgott proved that there exists a δ>0δ>0 such that if SS is a symmetric generating subset of SL(2,p)SL(2,p) containing 1 then either S3=SL(2,p)S^3=SL(2,p) or ∣S3∣≥∣S∣1+δ|S^3|\geq |S|^{1+δ}. It is known that δ≥1/3024δ\geq 1/3024. Here we show that δ≤(log⁡2(7)−1)/6≈0.3012δ\leq(\log_2(7)-1)/6 \approx 0.3012 and we present evidence suggesting that this might be the true value of δδ.
