Scalar behavior for a complex multi-soliton arising in blow-up for a semilinear wave equation

This paper deals with blow-up for the complex-valued semilinear wave equation with power nonlinearity in dimension 1. Up to a rotation of the solution in the complex plane, we show that near a characteristic blow-up point, the solution behaves exactly as in the real-valued case. Namely, up to a rotation in the complex plane, the solution decomposes into a sum of a finite number of decoupled solitons with alternate signs. The main novelty of our proof is a resolution of a complex-valued first order Toda system governing the evolution of the positions and the phases of the solitons.

Orbital stability of ground states for a Sobolev critical Schrödinger equation

We study the existence of ground state standing waves, of prescribed mass, for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with mixed power nonlinearities \begin{equation*} i \partial_t v + Δv + μv |v|^{q-2} + v |v|^{2^* - 2} = 0, \quad (t, x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^N, \end{equation*} where $N \geq 3$, $v: \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^N \to \mathbb{C}$, $μ> 0$, $2 < q < 2 + 4/N $ and $2^* = 2N/(N-2)$ is the critical Sobolev exponent. We show that all ground states correspond to local minima of the associated Energy functional. Next, despite the fact that the nonlinearity is Sobolev critical, we show that the set of ground states is orbitally stable. Our results settle a question raised by N. Soave [35].

Soliton resolution for the energy-critical nonlinear wave equation in the radial case

We consider the focusing energy-critical nonlinear wave equation for radially symmetric initial data in space dimensions $D \ge 4$. This equation has a unique (up to sign and scale) nontrivial, finite energy stationary solution $W$, called the ground state. We prove that every finite energy solution with bounded energy norm resolves, continuously in time, into a finite superposition of asymptotically decoupled copies of the ground state and free radiation.

Statistical mechanics of the wave maps equation in dimension 1+1

We study wave maps with values in S^d, defined on the future light cone {|x| <= t}, with prescribed data at the boundary {|x| = t}. Based on the work of Keel and Tao, we prove that the problem is well-posed for locally absolutely continuous boundary data. We design a discrete version of the problem and prove that for every absolutely continuous boundary data, the sequence of solutions of the discretised problem converges to the corresponding continuous wave map as the mesh size tends to 0. Next, we consider the boundary data given by the S^d-valued Brownian motion. We prove that the sequence of solutions of the discretised problems has an accumulation point for the topology of locally uniform convergence. We argue that the resulting random field can be interpreted as the wave-map evolution corresponding to the initial data given by the Gibbs distribution.

An asymptotic expansion of two-bubble wave maps

This is the first part of a two-paper series that establishes the uniqueness and regularity of a threshold energy wave map that does not scatter in both time directions. Consider the two-sphere valued equivariant energy critical wave maps equation on 1+2 dimensional Minkowski space, with equivariance class k>3. It is known that every topologically trivial wave map with energy less than twice that of the unique k-equivariant harmonic map Q scatters in both time directions. We study maps with precisely the threshold energy, i.e., twice the energy of Q. In this paper, we give a refined construction of a wave map with threshold energy that converges to a superposition of two harmonic maps (bubbles), asymptotically decoupling in scale. We show that this two-bubble solution possesses H^2 regularity. We give a precise dynamical description of the modulation parameters as well as an expansion of the map into profiles. In the next paper in the series, we show that this solution is unique (up to the natural invariances of the equation) relying crucially on the detailed properties of the solution constructed here. Combined with our earlier work, we can now give an exact description of every threshold wave map.

Dynamics of strongly interacting kink-antikink pairs for scalar fields on a line

This paper concerns classical nonlinear scalar field models on the real line. If the potential is a symmetric double-well, such a model admits static solutions called kinks and antikinks, which are perhaps the simplest examples of topological solitons. We study pure kink-antikink pairs, which are solutions that converge in one infinite time direction to a superposition of one kink and one antikink, without radiation. Our main result is a complete classification of all kink-antikink pairs in the strongly interacting regime, which means the speeds of the kinks tend asymptotically to zero. We show that up to translation there is exactly one such solution, and we give a precise description of the dynamics of the kink separation.

Uniqueness of two-bubble wave maps

This is the second part of a two-paper series that establishes the uniqueness and regularity of a threshold energy wave map that does not scatter in both time directions. Consider the two-sphere valued equivariant energy critical wave maps equation on 1+2 dimensional Minkowski space, with equivariance class k > 3. It is known that every topologically trivial wave map with energy less than twice that of the unique k-equivariant harmonic map Q scatters in both time directions. We study maps with precisely the threshold energy, i.e., twice the energy of Q. In the first part of the series we gave a refined construction of a threshold wave map that asymptotically decouples into a superposition of two harmonic maps (bubbles), one of which is concentrating in scale. In this paper, we show that this solution is the unique (up to the natural invariances of the equation) two-bubble wave map. Combined with our earlier work we can now give an exact description of every threshold wave map.

Construction of two-bubble solutions for energy-critical wave equations

We construct pure two-bubbles for some energy-critical wave equations, that is solutions which in one time direction approach a superposition of two stationary states both centered at the origin, but asymptotically decoupled in scale. Our solution exists globally, with one bubble at a fixed scale and the other concentrating in infinite time, with an error tending to 0 in the energy space. We treat the cases of the power nonlinearity in space dimension 6, the radial Yang-Mills equation and the equivariant wave map equation with equivariance class k > 2. The concentrating speed of the second bubble is exponential for the first two models and a power function in the last case.

Construction of type II blow-up solutions for the energy-critical wave equation in dimension 5

We consider the semilinear wave equation with focusing energy-critical nonlinearity in space dimension 5 with radial data. It is known that a solution $(u, \partial_t u)$ which blows up at $t = 0$ in a neighborhood (in the energy norm) of the family of solitons $W_λ$, asymptotically decomposes in the energy space as a sum of a bubble $W_λ$ and an asymptotic profile $(u_0^*, u_1^*)$, where $\lim_{t\to 0}λ(t)/t = 0$ and $(u^*_0, u^*_1) \in \dot H^1\times L^2$. We construct a blow-up solution of this type such that $(u^*_0, u^*_1)$ is any pair of sufficiently regular functions with $u_0^*(0) > 0$. For these solutions the concentration rate is $λ(t) \sim t^4$. We also provide examples of solutions with concentration rate $λ(t) \sim t^{ν+ 1}$ for $ν> 8$, related to the behaviour of the asymptotic profile near the origin.

Bounds on the speed of type II blow-up for the energy critical wave equation in the radial case

We consider the focusing energy-critical wave equation in space dimension $N\in \{3, 4, 5\}$ for radial data. We study type II blow-up solutions which concentrate one bubble of energy. It is known that such solutions decompose in the energy space as a sum of the bubble and an asymptotic profile. We prove bounds on the blow-up speed in the case when the asymptotic profile is sufficiently regular. These bounds are optimal in dimension $N = 5$. We also prove that if the asymptotic profile is sufficiently regular, then it cannot be strictly negative at the origin.

Nonexistence of radial two-bubbles with opposite signs for the energy-critical wave equation

We consider the focusing energy-critical wave equation in space dimension $N \geq 3$ for radial data. We study two-bubble solutions, that is solutions which behave as a superposition of two decoupled radial ground states (called bubbles) asymptotically for large positive times. We prove that in this case these two bubbles must have the same sign. The main tool is a sharp coercivity property of the energy functional near the family of ground states.

Small time heat kernel asymptotics at the cut locus on surfaces of revolution

In this paper we investigate the small time heat kernel asymptotics on the cut locus on a class of surfaces of revolution, which are the simplest 2-dimensional Riemannian manifolds different from the sphere with non trivial cut-conjugate locus. We determine the degeneracy of the exponential map near a cut-conjugate point and present the consequences of this result to the small time heat kernel asymptotics at this point. These results give a first example where the minimal degeneration of the asymptotic expansion at the cut locus is attained.
