Scalar behavior for a complex multi-soliton arising in blow-up for a semilinear wave equation

This paper deals with blow-up for the complex-valued semilinear wave equation with power nonlinearity in dimension 1. Up to a rotation of the solution in the complex plane, we show that near a characteristic blow-up point, the solution behaves exactly as in the real-valued case. Namely, up to a rotation in the complex plane, the solution decomposes into a sum of a finite number of decoupled solitons with alternate signs. The main novelty of our proof is a resolution of a complex-valued first order Toda system governing the evolution of the positions and the phases of the solitons.

Modulation theory for the flat blowup solutions of nonlinear heat equation

In this paper, we revisit the proof of the existence of a solution to the semilinear heat equation in one space dimension with a at blowup profile, already proved by Bricmont and Kupainen together with Herrero and Velázquez. Though our approach relies on the well celebrated method, based on the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one, then the use of a topological shooting method to solve the latter, the novelty of our approach lays in the use of a modulation technique to control the projection of the zero eigenmode arising in the problem. Up to our knowledge, this is the first time where modulation is used with this kind of profiles. We do hope that this simplifies the argument.

On degenerate blow-up profiles for the subcritical semilinear heat equation

We consider the semilinear heat equation with a superlinear power nonlinearity in the Sobolev subcritical range. We construct a solution which blows up in finite time only at the origin, with a completely new blow-up profile, which is cross-shaped. Our method is general and extends to the construction of other solutions blowing up only at the origin, with a large variety of blow-up profiles, degenerate or not.

The blow-up rate for a non-scaling invariant semilinear heat equation

We consider the semilinear heat equation $$\partial_t u -Δu =f(u), \quad (x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^N\times [0,T),\qquad (1)$$ with $f(u)=|u|^{p-1}u\log^a (2+u^2)$, where $p>1$ is Sobolev subcritical and $a\in \mathbb{R}$. We first show an upper bound for any blow-up solution of (1). Then, using this estimate and the logarithmic property, we prove that the exact blow-up rate of any singular solution of (1) is given by the ODE solution associated with (1), namely $u' =|u|^{p-1}u\log^a (2+u^2)$. In other terms, all blow-up solutions in the Sobolev subcritical range are Type I solutions. Up to our knowledge, this is the first determination of the blow-up rate for a semilinear heat equation where the main nonlinear term is not homogeneous.

The blow-up rate for a non-scaling invariant semilinear wave equations in higher dimensions

We consider the semilinear wave equation $$\partial_t^2 u -Δu =f(u), \quad (x,t)\in \mathbb R^N\times [0,T),\qquad (1)$$ with $f(u)=|u|^{p-1}u\log^a (2+u^2)$, where $p>1$ and $a\in \mathbb R$, with subconformal power nonlinearity. We will show that the blow-up rate of any singular solution of (1) is given by the ODE solution associated with $(1)$, The result in one space dimension, has been proved in \cite{HZjmaa2020}. Our goal here is to extend this result to higher dimensions.

A Turing mechanism in order to explain the patchy nature of Crohn's disease

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that is not well understood. In particular, unlike other IBDs, the inflamed parts of the intestine compromise deep layers of the tissue and are not continuous but separated and distributed through the whole gastrointestinal tract, displaying a patchy inflammatory pattern. In the present paper, we introduce a toy-model which might explain the appearance of such patterns. We consider a reaction-diffusion system involving bacteria and phagocyte and prove that, under certain conditions, this system might reproduce an activator-inhibitor dynamic leading to the occurrence of Turing-type instabilities. In other words, we prove the existence of stable stationary solutions that are spatially periodic and do not vanish in time. We also propose a set of parameters for which the system exhibits such phenomena and compare it with realistic parameters found in the literature. This is the first time, as far as we know, that a Turing pattern is investigated in inflammatory models.

Construction of a blow-up solution for a perturbed nonlinear heat equation with a gradient and a non-local term

We consider in this paper a perturbation of the standard semilinear heat equation by a term involving the space derivative and a non-local term. We prove the existence of a blow-up solution, and give its blow-up profile. Our proof relies on the following method: we linearize the equation (in similarity variables) around the expected profile, then, we control the nonpositive directions of the spectrum thanks to the decreasing properties of the kernel. Finally, we use a topological argument to control the positive directions of the spectrum.

Blow-up rate for a semilinear wave equation with exponential nonlinearity in one space dimension

We consider in this paper blow-up solutions of the semilinear wave equation in one space dimension, with an exponential source term. Assuming that initial data are in $H^{1}_{loc}\times L^2_{loc}$ or some times in $ W^{1,\infty}\times L^{\infty}$, we derive the blow-up rate near a non-characteristic point in the smaller space, and give some bounds near other points. Our result generalize those proved by Godin under high regularity assumptions on initial data.

Construction of a stable periodic solution to a semilinear heat equation with a prescribed profile

We construct a periodic solution to the semilinear heat equation with power nonlinearity, in one space dimension, which blows up in finite time $T$ only at one blow-up point. We also give a sharp description of its blow-up profile. The proof relies on the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one and the use of index theory to conclude. Thanks to the geometrical interpretation of the finite-dimensional parameters in terms of the blow-up time and blow-up point, we derive the stability of the constructed solution with respect to initial data.

Existence of a Stable Blow-up profile for the nonlinear heat equation with a critical power nonlinear gradient term

We consider the nonlinear heat equation with a nonlinear gradient term: $\partial_t u =Δu+μ|\nabla u|^q+|u|^{p-1}u,\; μ>0,\; q=2p/(p+1),\; p>3,\; t\in (0,T),\; x\in \R^N.$ We construct a solution which blows up in finite time $T>0.$ We also give a sharp description of its blow-up profile and show that it is stable with respect to perturbations in initial data. The proof relies on the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one, and uses the index theory to conclude. The blow-up profile does not scale as $(T-t)^{1/2}|\log(T-t)|^{1/2},$ like in the standard nonlinear heat equation, i.e. $μ=0,$ but as $(T-t)^{1/2}|\log(T-t)|^β$ with $β=(p+1)/[2(p-1)]>1/2.$ We also show that $u$ and $\nabla u$ blow up simultaneously and at a single point, and give the final profile. In particular, the final profile is more singular than the case of the standard nonlinear heat equation.

Finite degrees of freedom for the refined blow-up profile of the semilinear heat equation

We refine the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the semilinear heat equation with Sobolev subcritical power nonlinearity which blow up in some finite time at a blow-up point where the (supposed to be generic) profile holds. In order to obtain this refinement, we have to abandon the explicit profile function as a first order approximation, and take a non explicit function as a first order description of the singular behavior. This non explicit function is in fact a special solution which we construct, obeying some refined prescribed behavior. The construction relies on the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one and the use of a topological argument based on index theory to conclude. Surprisingly, the new non explicit profiles which we construct make a family with finite degrees of freedom, namely $\frac{(N+1)N}{2}$ if $N$ is the dimension of the space.

Blow-up results for a strongly perturbed semilinear heat equation: Theoretical analysis and numerical method

We consider a blow-up solution for a strongly perturbed semilinear heat equation with Sobolev subcritical power nonlinearity. Working in the framework of similarity variables, we find a Lyapunov functional for the problem. Using this Lyapunov functional, we derive the blow-up rate and the blow-up limit of the solution. We also classify all asymptotic behaviors of the solution at the singularity and give precisely blow-up profiles corresponding to these behaviors. Finally, we attain the blow-up profile numerically, thanks to a new mesh-refinement algorithm inspired by the rescaling method of Berger and Kohn in 1988. Note that our method is applicable to more general equations, in particular those with no scaling invariance.

Dynamics near explicit stationary solutions in similarity variables for solutions of a semilinear wave equation in higher dimensions

This is the first of two papers devoted to the study of the properties of the blow-up surface for the $N$ dimensional semilinear wave equation with subconformal power nonlinearity. In a series of papers, we have clarified the situation in one space dimension. Our goal here is to extend some of the properties to higher dimension. In dimension one, an essential tool was to study the dynamics of the solution in similarity variables, near the set of non-zero equilibria, which are obtained by a Lorentz transform of the space-independent solution. As a matter of fact, the main part of this paper is to study similar objects in higher dimensions. More precisely, near that set of equilibria, we show that solutions are either non-global, or go to zero, or converge to some explicit equilibrium. We also show that the first case cannot occur in the characteristic case, and that only the third possibility occurs in the non-characteristic case, thanks to the non-degeneracy of the blow-up limit, another new result in our paper. As a by-product of our techniques, we obtain the stability of the zero solution.

On the stability of the notion of non-characteristic point and blow-up profile for semilinear wave equations

We consider a blow-up solution for the semilinear wave equation in $N$ dimensions, with subconformal power nonlinearity. Introducing $\RR_0$ the set of non-characteristic points with the Lorentz transform of the space-independent solution as asymptotic profile, we show that $\RR_0$ is open and that the blow-up surface is of class $C^1$ on $\RR_0$. Then, we show the stability of $\RR_0$ with respect to initial data.

Profile for a simultaneously blowing up solution for a complex valued semilinear heat equation

We construct a solution to a complex nonlinear heat equation which blows up in finite time $T$ only at one blow-up point. We also give a sharp description of its blow-up profile. The proof relies on the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one and the use of index theory to conclude. We note that the real and imaginary parts of the constructed solution blow up simultaneously.

Blow-up results for semilinear wave equations in the super-conformal case

We consider the semilinear wave equation in higher dimensions with power nonlinearity in the super-conformal range, and its perturbations with lower order terms, including the Klein-Gordon equation. We improve the upper bounds on blow-up solutions previously obtained by Killip, Stovall and Vişan [6]. Our proof uses the similarity variables' setting. We consider the equation in that setting as a perturbation of the conformal case, and we handle the extra terms thanks to the ideas we already developed in [5] for perturbations of the pure power case with lower order terms.

preprint2012arXiv

Construction of a multi-soliton blow-up solution to the semilinear wave equation in one space dimension

We consider the semilinear wave equation with power nonlinearity in one space dimension. Given a blow-up solution with a characteristic point, we refine the blow-up behavior first derived by Merle and Zaag. We also refine the geometry of the blow-up set near a characteristic point, and show that except may be for one exceptional situation, it is never symmetric with the respect to the characteristic point. Then, we show that all blow-up modalities predicted by those authors do occur. More precisely, given any integer $k\ge 2$ and $ζ_0 \in \m R$, we construct a blow-up solution with a characteristic point $a$, such that the asymptotic behavior of the solution near $(a,T(a))$ shows a decoupled sum of $k$ solitons with alternate signs, whose centers (in the hyperbolic geometry) have $ζ_0$ as a center of mass, for all times.

Construction and stability of a blow up solution for a nonlinear heat equation with a gradient term

We consider a nonlinear heat equation with a gradient term. We construct a blow-up solution for this equation with a prescribed blow-up profile. For that, we translate the question in selfsimilar variables and reduce the problem to a finite dimensional one. We then solve the finite dimensional problem using index theory. The interpretation of the finite dimensional parameters allows us to derive the stability of the constructed solution with respect to initial data.

A Lyapunov functional and blow-up results for a class of perturbations for semilinear wave equations in the critical case

We consider in this paper some class of perturbation for the semilinear wave equation with critical (in the conformal transform sense) power nonlinearity. Working in the framework of similarity variables, we find a Lyapunov functional for the problem. Using a two-step argument based on interpolation and a critical Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality, we show that the blow-up rate of any sigular solution is given by the solution of the non perturbed associated ODE, namely $u" = u^p$.

A Lyapunov functional and blow-up results for a class of perturbed semilinear wave equations

We consider in this paper some class of perturbation for the semilinear wave equation with subcritical (in the conformal transform sense) power nonlinearity. We first derive a Lyapunov functional in similarity variables and then use it to derive the blow-up rate. Though the result is similar to the unperturbed case in its statements, this is not the case of our method, which is new up to our knowledge.
