Soliton resolution for the energy-critical nonlinear wave equation in the radial case

We consider the focusing energy-critical nonlinear wave equation for radially symmetric initial data in space dimensions $D \ge 4$. This equation has a unique (up to sign and scale) nontrivial, finite energy stationary solution $W$, called the ground state. We prove that every finite energy solution with bounded energy norm resolves, continuously in time, into a finite superposition of asymptotically decoupled copies of the ground state and free radiation.

An asymptotic expansion of two-bubble wave maps

This is the first part of a two-paper series that establishes the uniqueness and regularity of a threshold energy wave map that does not scatter in both time directions. Consider the two-sphere valued equivariant energy critical wave maps equation on 1+2 dimensional Minkowski space, with equivariance class k>3. It is known that every topologically trivial wave map with energy less than twice that of the unique k-equivariant harmonic map Q scatters in both time directions. We study maps with precisely the threshold energy, i.e., twice the energy of Q. In this paper, we give a refined construction of a wave map with threshold energy that converges to a superposition of two harmonic maps (bubbles), asymptotically decoupling in scale. We show that this two-bubble solution possesses H^2 regularity. We give a precise dynamical description of the modulation parameters as well as an expansion of the map into profiles. In the next paper in the series, we show that this solution is unique (up to the natural invariances of the equation) relying crucially on the detailed properties of the solution constructed here. Combined with our earlier work, we can now give an exact description of every threshold wave map.

Dynamics of strongly interacting kink-antikink pairs for scalar fields on a line

This paper concerns classical nonlinear scalar field models on the real line. If the potential is a symmetric double-well, such a model admits static solutions called kinks and antikinks, which are perhaps the simplest examples of topological solitons. We study pure kink-antikink pairs, which are solutions that converge in one infinite time direction to a superposition of one kink and one antikink, without radiation. Our main result is a complete classification of all kink-antikink pairs in the strongly interacting regime, which means the speeds of the kinks tend asymptotically to zero. We show that up to translation there is exactly one such solution, and we give a precise description of the dynamics of the kink separation.

Uniqueness of two-bubble wave maps

This is the second part of a two-paper series that establishes the uniqueness and regularity of a threshold energy wave map that does not scatter in both time directions. Consider the two-sphere valued equivariant energy critical wave maps equation on 1+2 dimensional Minkowski space, with equivariance class k > 3. It is known that every topologically trivial wave map with energy less than twice that of the unique k-equivariant harmonic map Q scatters in both time directions. We study maps with precisely the threshold energy, i.e., twice the energy of Q. In the first part of the series we gave a refined construction of a threshold wave map that asymptotically decouples into a superposition of two harmonic maps (bubbles), one of which is concentrating in scale. In this paper, we show that this solution is the unique (up to the natural invariances of the equation) two-bubble wave map. Combined with our earlier work we can now give an exact description of every threshold wave map.

The Lie Detector

How many free variables do we really need to build a credible model of a physical system? Currently there is no systematic approach; we appeal to some physical principles, tune free variables by comparing with canonical cases, and hope our real-world applications interpolate between them. In this work we combine two pioneering and entirely disparate pieces of mathematics: the century-old techniques of Sophus Lie for solving differential equtions and recent work initiated by Field's medallist Terence Tao on converting NP-complete combinatorical problems into neighbouring convex optimisations. We present a novel and fully systematic procedure for designing models of physical systems with necessary and just-sufficient complexity, in marked contrast with the approach to function approximation taken by neural networks and other current approaches to machine learning. Our methodology replaces the ad-hoc development of models to recover structure and understanding from observational, experimental or simulated data. At its core, our method seeks to find invariant properties of differential equations known as Lie symmetries, and for this reason we have called our algorithm the Lie Detector.

A refined threshold theorem for (1+2)-dimensional wave maps into surfaces

The recently established threshold theorem for energy critical wave maps states that wave maps with energy less than that of the ground state (i.e., a minimal energy nontrivial harmonic map) are globally regular and scatter on (1+2)-dimensional Minkowski space. In this note we give a refinement of this theorem when the target is a closed orientable surface by taking into account an additional invariant of the problem, namely the topological degree. We show that the sharp energy threshold for global regularity and scattering is in fact twice the energy of the ground state for wave maps with degree zero, whereas wave maps with nonzero degree necessarily have at least the energy of the ground state. We also give a discussion on the formulation of a refined threshold conjecture for the energy critical $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills equation on (1+4)-dimensional Minkowski space.

Characterization of large energy solutions of the equivariant wave map problem: II

We consider 1-equivariant wave maps from 1+2 dimensions to the 2-sphere of finite energy. We establish a classification of all degree 1 global solutions whose energies are less than three times the energy of the harmonic map Q. In particular, for each global energy solution of topological degree 1, we show that the solution asymptotically decouples into a rescaled harmonic map plus a radiation term. Together with our companion article, where we consider the case of finite-time blow up, this gives a characterization of all 1-equivariant, degree 1 wave maps in the energy regime [E(Q), 3E(Q)).

Equivariant Wave Maps on the Hyperbolic Plane with Large Energy

In this paper we continue the analysis of equivariant wave maps from 2-dimensional hyperbolic space into surfaces of revolution that was initiated in [13, 14]. When the target is the hyperbolic plane we proved in [13] the existence and asymptotic stability of a 1-parameter family of finite energy harmonic maps indexed by how far each map wraps around the target. Here we conjecture that each of these harmonic maps is globally asymptotically stable, meaning that the evolution of any arbitrarily large finite energy perturbation of a harmonic map asymptotically resolves into the harmonic map itself plus free radiation. Since such initial data exhaust the energy space, this is the soliton resolution conjecture for this equation. The main result is a verification of this conjecture for a nonperturbative subset of the harmonic maps

Gap Eigenvalues and Asymptotic Dynamics of Geometric Wave Equations on Hyperbolic Space

In this paper we study $k$-equivariant wave maps from the hyperbolic plane into the $2$-sphere as well as the energy critical equivariant $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills problem on $4$-dimensional hyperbolic space. The latter problem bears many similarities to a $2$-equivariant wave map into a surface of revolution. As in the case of $1$-equivariant wave maps considered in~\cite{LOS1}, both problems admit a family of stationary solutions indexed by a parameter that determines how far the image of the map wraps around the target manifold. Here we show that if the image of a stationary solution is contained in a geodesically convex subset of the target, then it is asymptotically stable in the energy space. However, for a stationary solution that covers a large enough portion of the target, we prove that the Schrödinger operator obtained by linearizing about such a harmonic map admits a simple positive eigenvalue in the spectral gap. As there is no a priori nonlinear obstruction to asymptotic stability, this gives evidence for the existence of metastable states (i.e., solutions with anomalously slow decay rates) in these simple geometric models.

Stable soliton resolution for exterior wave maps in all equivariance classes

In this paper we consider finite energy, \ell-equivariant wave maps from 1+3-dimensional Minkowski space exterior to the unit ball at the origin into the 3-sphere. We impose a Dirichlet boundary condition at r=1, which in this context means that the boundary of the unit ball in the domain gets mapped to the north pole. Each such \ell-equivariant wave map has a fixed integer-valued topological degree, and in each degree class there is a unique harmonic map, which minimizes the energy for maps of the same degree. We prove that an arbitrary \ell-equivariant exterior wave map with finite energy scatters to the unique harmonic map in its degree class, i.e., soliton resolution. This extends the recent results of the first, second, and fourth authors on the 1-equivariant equation to higher equivariance classes, and thus completely resolves a conjecture of Bizon, Chmaj and Maliborski, who observed this asymptotic behavior numerically. The proof relies crucially on exterior energy estimates for the free radial wave equation in dimension d = 2 \ell +3, which are established in a companion paper.

The Cauchy problem for wave maps on hyperbolic space in dimensions $d \geq 4$

We establish global well-posedness and scattering for wave maps from $d$-dimensional hyperbolic space into Riemannian manifolds of bounded geometry for initial data that is small in the critical Sobolev space for $d \geq 4$. The main theorem is proved using the moving frame approach introduced by Shatah and Struwe. However, rather than imposing the Coulomb gauge we formulate the wave maps problem in Tao's caloric gauge, which is constructed using the harmonic map heat flow. In this setting the caloric gauge has the remarkable property that the main `gauged' dynamic equations reduce to a system of nonlinear scalar wave equations on $\mathbb{H}^{d}$ that are amenable to Strichartz estimates rather than tensorial wave equations (which arise in other gauges such as the Coulomb gauge) for which useful dispersive estimates are not known. This last point makes the heat flow approach crucial in the context of wave maps on curved domains.

Channels of energy for the linear radial wave equation

Exterior channel of energy estimates for the radial wave equation were first considered in three dimensions by Duyckaerts, the first author, and Merle, and recently for the 5-dimensional case by the first, second, and fourth authors. In this paper we find the general form of the channel of energy estimate in all odd dimensions for the radial free wave equation. This will be used in a companion paper to establish soliton resolution for equivariant wave maps in 3 dimensions exterior to the ball B(0,1), and in all equivariance classes.

Profile decompositions for wave equations on hyperbolic space with applications

The goal for this paper is twofold. Our first main objective is to develop Bahouri-Gerard type profile decompositions for waves on hyperbolic space. Recently, such profile decompositions have proved to be a versatile tool in the study of the asymptotic dynamics of solutions to nonlinear wave equations with large energy. With an eye towards further applications, we develop this theory in a fairly general framework, which includes the case of waves on hyperbolic space perturbed by a time-independent potential. Our second objective is to use the profile decomposition to address a specific nonlinear problem, namely the question of global well-posedness and scattering for the defocusing, energy critical, semi-linear wave equation on three-dimensional hyperbolic space, possibly perturbed by a repulsive time-independent potential. Using the concentration compactness/rigidity method introduced by Kenig and Merle, we prove that all finite energy initial data lead to a global evolution that scatters to linear waves in infinite time. This proof will serve as a blueprint for the arguments in a forthcoming work, where we study the asymptotic behavior of large energy equivariant wave maps on the hyperbolic plane.

Profiles for the radial focusing 4d energy-critical wave equation

Consider a finite energy radial solution to the focusing energy critical semilinear wave equation in 1+4 dimensions. Assume that this solution exhibits type-II behavior, by which we mean that the critical Sobolev norm of the evolution stays bounded on the maximal interval of existence. We prove that along a sequence of times tending to the maximal forward time of existence, the solution decomposes into a sum of dynamically rescaled solitons, a free radiation term, and an error tending to zero in the energy space. If, in addition, we assume that the critical norm of the evolution localized to the light cone (the forward light cone in the case of global solutions and the backwards cone in the case of finite time blow-up) is less than 2 times the critical norm of the ground state solution W, then the decomposition holds without a restriction to a subsequence.

Scattering for radial, semi-linear, super-critical wave equations with bounded critical norm

In this paper we study the focusing cubic wave equation in 1+5 dimensions with radial initial data as well as the one-equivariant wave maps equation in 1+3 dimensions with the model target manifolds $\mathbb{S}^3$ and $\mathbb{H}^3$. In both cases the scaling for the equation leaves the $\dot{H}^{\frac{3}{2}} \times \dot{H}^{\frac{1}{2}}$-norm of the solution invariant, which means that the equation is super-critical with respect to the conserved energy. Here we prove a conditional scattering result: If the critical norm of the solution stays bounded on its maximal time of existence, then the solution is global in time and scatters to free waves both forwards and backwards in infinite time. The methods in this paper also apply to all supercritical power-type nonlinearities for both the focusing and defocusing radial semi-linear equation in 1+5 dimensions, yielding analogous results.

preprint2014arXiv

Scattering for the radial 3d cubic wave equation

Consider the Cauchy problem for the radial cubic wave equation in 1+3 dimensions with either the focusing or defocusing sign. This problem is critical in $\dot{H}^{\frac{1}{2}} \times \dot{H}^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ and subcritical with respect to the conserved energy. Here we prove that if the critical norm of a solution remains bounded on the maximal time-interval of existence, then the solution must in fact be global-in-time and scatter to free waves as $t \to \pm \infty$.

Stability of stationary equivariant wave maps from the hyperbolic plane

In this paper we initiate the study of equivariant wave maps from 2d hyperbolic space into rotationally symmetric surfaces. This problem exhibits markedly different phenomena than its Euclidean counterpart due to the exponential volume growth of concentric geodesic spheres on the domain. In particular, when the target is the 2-sphere, we find a family of equivariant harmonic maps indexed by a parameter that measures how far the image of each harmonic map wraps around the sphere. These maps have energies taking all values between zero and the energy of the unique co-rotational Euclidean harmonic map, Q, from the Euclidean plane to the 2-sphere, given by stereographic projection. We prove that the harmonic maps are asymptotically stable for values of the parameter smaller than a threshold that is large enough to allow for maps that wrap more than halfway around the sphere. Indeed, we prove Strichartz estimates for the operator obtained by linearizing around such a harmonic map. However, for harmonic maps with energies approaching the Euclidean energy of Q, asymptotic stability via a perturbative argument based on Strichartz estimates is precluded by the existence of gap eigenvalues in the spectrum of the linearized operator. When the target is 2d hyperbolic space, we find a continuous family of asymptotically stable equivariant harmonic maps with arbitrarily small and arbitrarily large energies. This stands in sharp contrast to the corresponding problem on Euclidean space, where all finite energy solutions scatter to zero as time tends to infinity.

Conditional global existence and scattering for a semi-linear Skyrme equation with large data

We study a generalization of energy super-critical wave maps due to Adkins and Nappi that can also be viewed as a simplified version of the Skyrme model. These are maps from 1+3 dimensional Minkowski space that take values in the 3-sphere, and it follows that every finite energy Adkins-Nappi wave map has a fixed topological degree which is an integer. Here we initiate the study of the large data dynamics for Adkins-Nappi wave maps by proving that there is no type II blow-up in the class of maps with topological degree zero. In particular, any degree zero map whose critical norm stays bounded must be global-in-time and scatter to zero as time tends to infinity.

Relaxation of wave maps exterior to a ball to harmonic maps for all data

In this paper we study 1-equivariant wave maps of finite energy from 1+3-dimensional Minkowski space exterior to the unit ball at the origin into the 3-sphere. We impose a Dirichlet boundary condition at r=1, meaning that the unit sphere in R^3 gets mapped to the north pole. Finite energy implies that spacial infinity gets mapped to either the north or south pole. In particular, each such equivariant wave map has a well-defined topological degree which is an integer. We establish relaxation of such a map of arbitrary energy and degree to the unique stationary harmonic map in its degree class. This settles a recent conjecture of Bizon, Chmaj, Maliborski who observed this asymptotic behavior numerically.

The Cauchy Problem for Wave Maps on a Curved Background

We consider the Cauchy problem for wave maps u: \R times M \to N for Riemannian manifolds, (M, g) and (N, h). We prove global existence and uniqueness for initial data that is small in the critical Sobolev norm in the case (M, g) = (\R^4, g), where g is a small perturbation of the Euclidean metric. The proof follows the method introduced by Statah and Struwe for proving global existence and uniqueness of small data wave maps u : \R \times \R^d \to N in the critical norm, for d at least 4. In our argument we employ the Strichartz estimates for variable coefficient wave equations established by Metcalfe and Tataru.
