Universal gapless Dirac cone and tunable topological states in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures

In the newly discovered magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, both axion insulator state and quantized anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) have been observed by tuning the magnetic structure. The related (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures with increased tuning knobs, are predicted to be a more versatile platform for exotic topological states. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies on a series of the heterostructures (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$). A universal gapless Dirac cone is observed at the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ terminated (0001) surfaces in all systems. This is in sharp contrast to the expected gap from the original antiferromagnetic ground state, indicating an altered magnetic structure near the surface, possibly due to the surface termination. In the meantime, the electron band dispersion of the surface states, presumably dominated by the top surface, is found to be sensitive to different stackings of the underlying MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layers. Our results suggest the high tunability of both magnetic and electronic structures of the topological surface states in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures, which is essential in realizing various novel topological states.

Anomalous impurity effects in the iron-based superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$

High-quality K(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals have been grown by using KAs flux method. Instead of increasing the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ through electron doping, we find that Co impurities rapidly suppress $T_{\rm c}$ down to zero at only $x \approx$ 0.04. Such an effective suppression of $T_{\rm c}$ by impurities is quite different from that observed in Ba$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ with multiple nodeless superconducting gaps. Thermal conductivity measurements in zero field show that the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ only change slightly with $3.4\%$ Co doping, despite the sharp increase of scattering rate. The implications of these anomalous impurity effects are discussed.

Electronic structure of the BaTi$_2$As$_2$O parent compound of the titanium based oxypnictide superconductor

The electronic structure of BaTi2As2O, a parent compound of the newly discovered titanium-based oxypnictide superconductors, is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The electronic structure shows multi-orbital nature and possible three-dimensional character. An anomalous temperature-dependent spectral weight redistribution and broad lineshape indicate the incoherent nature of the spectral function. At the density-wave-like transition temperature around 200 K, a partial gap opens at the Fermi patches. These findings suggest that BaTi2As2O is likely a charge density wave material in the strong interaction regime.

Evolution of Anisotropic In-plane Resistivity with doping level in Ca$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ Single Crystals

We measured the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in the underdoped Ca$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. The anisotropy (indicated by $ρ_{\rm b} - ρ_{\rm a}$) appears below a temperature well above magnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm N}$, being positive ($ρ_{\rm b} - ρ_{\rm a} > 0$) as $x\leq$ 0.14. With increasing the doping level to $x$ = 0.19, an intersection between $ρ_{\rm b}$ and $ρ_{\rm a}$ is observed upon cooling, with $ρ_{\rm b} - ρ_{\rm a} < 0$ at low-temperature deep inside a magnetically ordered state, while $ρ_{\rm b} - ρ_{\rm a}> 0$ at high temperature. Subsequently, further increase of hole concentration leads to a negative anisotropy $ρ_{\rm b} - ρ_{\rm a} < 0$ in the whole temperature range. These results manifest that the anisotropic behavior of resistivity in the magnetically ordered state depends strongly on the competition of the contributions from different mechanisms, and the competition between the two contributions results in a complicated evolution of the anisotropy of in-plane resistivity with doping level.

Calorimetric study in single crystal of CsFe$_2$As$_2$

We measured resistivity and specific heat of high-quality CsFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals, which were grown by using a self-flux method. The CsFe$_2$As$_2$ crystal shows sharp superconducting transition at 1.8 K with the transition width of 0.1 K. The sharp superconducting transition and pronounced jump in specific heat indicate high quality of the crystals. Analysis on the superconducting-state specific heat supports unconventional pairing symmetry in CsFe$_2$As$_2$.

Power-law Temperature Dependent Hall Angle in the Normal State and its Correlation with Superconductivity in iron-pnictides

We report Hall measurement of the normal state in K- and Co-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$, as well NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As. We found that a power-law temperature dependence of Hall angle, cot$θ_{\rm H}$$\propto$ $T^β$, prevails in normal state with temperature range well above the structural, spin-density-wave and superconducting transitions for the all samples with various doping levels. The power $β$ is nearly 4 for the parent compounds and the heavily underdoped samples, while around 3 for the superconducting samples. The $β$ suddenly changes from 4 to 3 at a doping level that is close to the emergence of superconductivity. It suggests that the $β$ of $\sim 3$ is clearly tied to the superconductivity. Our data suggest that, similar to cuprates, there exists a connection between the physics in the normal state and superconductivity of iron-pnictides. These findings shed light on the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity.

A crossover in phase diagram of NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As determined by electronic transport measurements

We report electronic transport measurements on single crystals of NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As system. We found that the cotangent of Hall angle, cot$θ_{\rm H}$, follows $T^4$ for the parent compound with filamentary superconductivity and $T^2$ for the heavily-overdoped non-superconducting sample. While it exhibits approximately $T^3$-dependence in all the superconducting samples, suggesting this behaivor is associated with bulk superconductivity in ferropnictides. A deviation develops below a characteristic temperature $T^*$ well above the structural and superconducting transitions, accompanied by a departure from power-law temperature dependence in resistivity. The doping dependence of $T^*$ resembles the crossover line of pseudogap phase in cuprates.

Enhanced Superconductivity by Rare-earth Metal-doping in Phenanthrene

We successfully synthesized La- and Sm-doped phenanthrene powder samples and discovered superconductivity at $T_{\rm c}$ around 6 K in them. The $T_{\rm c}$s are 6.1 K for LaPhenanthrene and 6.0 K for SmPhenanthrene, which are enhanced by about 1 K and 0.5 K compared to those in $A_3$Phenanthrene ($A$=K and Rb) and in $Ae_{1.5}$Phenanthrene ($Ae$ = Sr and Ba) superconductors respectively. The superconductive shielding fractions for LaPhenanthrene and SmPhenanthrene are 46.1%$ and 49.8$%$ at 2 K, respectively. The little effect of the doping of the magnetic ion Sm$^{3+}$ on $T_c$ and the positive pressure dependence coefficient on $T_{\rm c}$ strongly suggests unconventional superconductivity in the doped phenanthrene superconductors. The charge transfer to organic molecules from dopants of La and Sm induces a redshift of 7 cm$^{-1}$ per electron for the mode at 1441 cm$^{-1}$ in the Raman spectra, which is almost the same as those observed in $A_3$Phenanthrene ($A$=K and Rb) and $Ae_{1.5}$Phenanthrene ($Ae$ = Sr and Ba) superconductors.

Metamagnetic transition in Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$Co$_2$As$_2$($x$ = 0 and 0.1) single crystals

We report the magnetism and transport measurements of CaCo$_2$As$_2$ and Ca$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$Co$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. Antiferromagnetic transition was observed at about 70 K and 90 K for CaCo$_2$As$_2$ and Ca$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$Co$_2$As$_2$, respectively. Magnetism and magnetoresistance measurements reveal metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic state to a ferromagnetic state with the critical field of 3.5 T and 1.5 T respectively along c-axis for these two materials at low temperature. For the field along ab-plane, spins can also be fully polarized above the field of 4.5 T for Ca$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$Co$_2$As$_2$. While for CaCo$_2$As$_2$, spins can not be fully polarized up to 7 T. We proposed the cobalt moments of these two materials should be ordered ferromagnetically within the ab-plane but antiferromagnetically along the c-axis(A-type AFM).

Phase Diagram and Calorimetric Properties of NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As

We measured the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility to map out the phase diagram of single crystalline NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As. Replacement of Fe by Co suppresses both the structural and magnetic transition, while enhances the superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$) and superconducting component fraction. Magnetic susceptibility exhibits temperature-linear dependence in the high temperatures up to 500 K for all the superconducting samples, but such behavior suddenly breaks down for the non-superconducting overdoped crystal, suggesting that the superconductivity is closely related to the T-linear dependence of susceptibility. Analysis on the superconducting-state specific heat for the optimally doped crystal provides strong evidence for a two-band s-wave order parameter with gap amplitudes of $Δ_1(0)/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}$= 1.78 and $Δ_2(0)/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}$=3.11, being consistent with the nodeless gap symmetry revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiment.

Physical properties in hole-doped SrFe$_{2-x}$Cu$_x$As$_2$ single crystals

We report the structural, magnetic and electronic transport properties of SrFe$_{2-x}$Cu$_x$As$_2$ single crystals grown by self-flux technique. SrCu$_2$As$_2$ and SrFe$_2$As$_2$ both crystallize in ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type (122-type) structure at room temperature, but exhibit distinct magnetic and electronic transport properties. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) Cu-2p core line position, resistivity, susceptibility and positive Hall coefficient indicate that SrCu$_2$As$_2$ is an sp-band metal with Cu in the 3d$^{10}$ electronic configuration corresponding to the valence state Cu$^{1+}$. The almost unchanged Cu-2p core line position in SrFe$_{2-x}$Cu$_x$As$_2$ compared with SrCu$_2$As$_2$ indicates that partial Cu substitutions for Fe in SrFe$_2$As$_2$ may result in hole doping rather than the expected electron doping. No superconductivity is induced by Cu substitution on Fe sites, even though the structural/spin density wave(SDW) transition is gradually suppressed with increasing Cu doping.

Physical properties of $A_x$Fe$_{2-y}$S$_2$ ($A$=K, Rb and Cs) single crystals

We successfully synthesized two new compounds Rb$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$S$_2$ and Cs$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$S$_2$ which were isostructural with K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ superconductor. We systematically investigated the resistivity, magnetism and thermoelectric power of $A_x$Fe$_{2-y}$S$_2$ ($A$=K, Rb and Cs) single crystals. High temperature resistivity and magnetic measurements show anomalies above 500 K depending on $A$ which are similar to $A_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$. Discrepancy between ZFC and FC curves was observed in K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$S$_2$ and Rb$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$S$_2$, while it disappears in Cs$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$S$_2$. Our results indicate the similar magnetism between $A_x$Fe$_{2-y}$S$_2$ and $A_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ at high temperature.

Pressure effects on superconducting properties of single-crystalline Co doped NaFeAs

Resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements under external pressure were performed on single-crystals NaFe1-xCoxAs (x=0, 0.01, 0.028, 0.075, 0.109). The maximum Tc enhanced by pressure in both underdoped and optimally doped NaFe1-xCoxAs is the same, as high as 31 K. The overdoped sample with x = 0.075 also shows a positive pressure effect on Tc, and an enhancement of Tc by 13 K is achieved under pressure of 2.3 GPa. All the superconducting samples show large positive pressure coefficient on superconductivity, being different from Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. However, the superconductivity cannot be induced by pressure in heavily overdoped non-superconducting NaFe0.891Co0.109As. These results provide evidence for that the electronic structure is much different between superconducting and heavily overdoped non-superconducting NaFe1-xCoxAs, being consistent with the observation by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

Transport and magnetic properties of La-doped CaFe$_2$As$_2$

We measured the transport properties and susceptibility of single crystals Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$(x=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.19 and 0.25). Large in-plane resistivity anisotropy similar to that in Co-doped 122 iron-pnictides is observed although no transition metals were introduced in the FeAs-plane. The in-plane resistivity anisotropy gradually increases with La doping below T$_{SDW}$, being different from the hole-doped 122 superconductors. The susceptibilities of the samples show that La doping leads to suppression of SDW and induces a Curie-Weiss-like behavior at low temperature, which is much stronger than the other 122 iron-based superconductors.

Transport Properties and Electronic Phase Diagram of Single-Crystalline Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$) ((Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$)$_2$As$_2$)$_5$

Sizable single-crystalline samples of Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$)((Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$)$_2$As$_2$)$_5$ (the 10-3-8 phase) with 0$\leq x<$0.1 have been grown and systematically characterized via X-Ray diffraction, magnetic, and transport measurements. The undoped sample is a heavily doped semiconductor with no sign of magnetic order down to 2 K. With increasing Pt content, the metallic behavior appears and superconductivity is realized for $x\geq$0.023. $T_{\rm c}$ rises to its maximum of approximately 13.6 K at the doping level of $x\sim$0.06, and then decreases for higher $x$ values. The electronic phase diagram of the 10-3-8 phase was mapped out based on the transport measurements. The mass anisotropy parameter $Γ\sim$10 obtained from resistive measurements in magnetic fields indicates a relatively large anisotropy in the iron-based superconductor family. This strong 2D character may lead to the absence of magnetic order. A linear $T$-dependence of susceptibility at high temperature is observed, indicating that spin fluctuations exist in the underdoped region as in most of the Fe-pnictide superconductors.

Coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in single crystals $A_{0.8}Fe_{2-y}Se_2$ (A= K, Rb, Cs, Tl/K and Tl/Rb): evidence from magnetization and resistivity

We measure the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility in the temperature range from 5 K to 600 K for the single crystals $A$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ ($A$ = K$_{0.8}$, Rb$_{0.8}$, Cs$_{0.8}$, Tl$_{0.5}$K$_{0.3}$ and Tl$_{0.4}$Rb$_{0.4}$). A sharp superconducting transition is observed in low temperature resistivity and susceptibility, and susceptibility shows 100% Meissner volume fraction for all crystals, while an antiferromagnetic transition is observed in susceptibility at Neel temperature ($T_N$) as high as 500 K to 540 K depending on A. It indicates the coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism. A sharp increase in resistivity arises from the structural transition due to Fe vacancy ordering at the temperature slightly higher than $T_{\rm N}$. Occurrence of superconductivity in an antiferromagnetic ordered state with so high $T_{\rm N}$ may suggest new physics in this type of unconventional superconductors.

Common Crystalline and Magnetic Structure of superconducting A2Fe4Se5

Single crystal neutron diffraction study has been performed on new superconductor A2Fe4Se5, where A = Cs, K, (Tl,Rb) and (Tl,K), and the same Fe vacancy ordered crystal structure and the same block checkerboard antiferromagne tic order recently discovered in the K2Fe4Se5 superconductor are observed. Thus, all known alkali metal and/or Tl intercalated iron selenide superconductors share common crystalline and magnetic structure. Investigation on electronic process in these new superconductors, for which a different electronic structure from those in previous Fe-based high-Tc superconductors is emerging, now has a valid structural and magnetic framework.

Crystal structure, physical properties and superconductivity in $A_{x}$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ single crystals

We studied the correlation among structure and transport properties and superconductivity in the different $A_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ single crystals ($A$ = K, Rb, and Cs). Two sets of (00$l$) reflections are observed in the X-ray single crystal diffraction patterns, and arise from the intrinsic inhomogeneous distribution of the intercalated alkali atoms. The occurrence of superconductivity is closely related to the {\sl c}-axis lattice constant, and the $A$ content is crucial to superconductivity. The hump observed in resistivity seems to be irrelevant to superconductivity. There exist many deficiencies within the FeSe layers in $A_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$, while their $T_{\rm c}$ does not change so much. In this sense, superconductivity is robust to the Fe and Se vacancies. Very high resistivity in the normal state should arise from such defects in the conducting FeSe layers. $A_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ ($A$ = K, Rb, and Cs) single crystals show the same susceptibility behavior in the normal state, and no anomaly is observed in susceptibility at the hump temperature in resistivity. The clear jump in specific heat for Rb$_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ and K$_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ single crystals shows the good bulk superconductivity in these crystals.

preprint2011arXiv

Electronic and magnetic phase diagram in K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ superconductors

The correlation and competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity are one of the most fundamental issues in all of high temperature superconductors. The superconductivity in high temperature cuprate superconductors arises from suppressing an antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mott insulator phase by doping1 while that in iron-pnictide high temperature superconductors arises from AFM semimetals and can coexist with AFM orders2-9. This key difference marked in their phase diagrams has raised many intriguing debates about whether the two materials can be placed in the same category to understand the mechanism of superconductivity. Recently, superconductivity at 32 K has been reported in iron-chalcogenide superconductors AxFe2-ySe2 (A=K, Rb, and Cs)10-12, which have the same structure as that of iron-pnictide AFe2As2 (A=Ba, Sr, Ca and K)13-15. Here, we report electronic and magnetic phase diagram of KxFe2-ySe2 system as a function of Fe valence. We find two AFM insulating phases and reveal that the superconducting phase is sandwiched between them, and give direct evidence that the superconductivity in AxFe2-ySe2 originates from the AFM insulating parent compounds. The two insulating phases are characterized by two distinct superstructures caused by Fe vacancy orders with modulation wave vectors of q1=(1/5, 3/5, 0) and q2=(1/4, 3/4, 0), respectively. These experimental results strongly indicate that iron-based superconductors and cuprates share a common origin and mechanism of superconductivity.

On the Structure of Vacancy Ordered Superconducting Alkali Metal Iron Selenide

With single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, we compare the structures of three sample showing optimal superconductivity, K0.774(4)Fe1.613(2)Se2, K0.738(6)Fe1.631(3)Se2 and Cs0.748(2)Fe1.626(1)Se2. All have an almost identical ordered vacancy structure with a ({\sqrt}5 x {\sqrt}5 x 1) super cell. The tetragonal unit cell, space group I4/m, possesses lattice parameters at 250K of a = b = 8.729(2) Å and c = 14.120(3) Å, a = b = 8.7186(12) Å and c = 14.0853(19) Å and at 295 K, a = b = 8.8617(16) Å and c = 15.304(3) Å for the three crystals, respectively. The structure contains two iron sites; one is almost completely empty, whilst the other is fully occupied. There are similarly two alkali metal sites that are occupied in the range of 72.2(2) % to 85.3(3) %. The inclusion of alkali metals and the presence of vacancies within the structure allows for considerable relaxation of the FeSe4 tetrahedron, compared with members of the Fe(Te, Se, S) series, and the resulting shift of the Se - F - Se bond angles to less distorted geometry could be important in understanding the associated increase in the superconducting transition temperature. The structure of these superconductors distinguishes themselves from the structure of the non-superconducting phases by an almost complete absence of Fe on the (0 0.5 0.25) site as well as lower alkali metal occupancy that ensures an exact Fe2+ oxidation state, which are clearly critical parameters in the promotion of superconductivity.

Pressure effect on superconductivity of $A_{x}$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ ($A$ = K and Cs)

We performed the high hydrostatic pressure resistivity measurements (up to 1.7 GPa) on the newly discovered superconductors $A_{x}$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ ($A$ = K and Cs) single crystals. Two batches of single crystals $K_xFe_2Se_2$ with different transition temperatures ($T_c$) were used to study the effect of pressure. The $T_c$ of the first one gradually decreases with increasing pressure from 32.6 K at ambient pressure. While a dome-like behavior was observed for the crystal with $T_c=31.1$ K, and $T_c$ reaches its maximum value of 32.7 K at the pressure of 0.48 GPa. It indicates that there exists a optimal doping with maximum $T_c$ of 32.7K in $K_xFe_2Se_2$ system. The behavior of $T_c$ vs. pressure for $Cs_xFe_2Se_2$ also shows a dome-like behavior, and $T_c$ reaches its maximum value of 31.1 K at the pressure of 0.82 GPa. The hump observed in temperature dependence of resistivity for all the samples tends to shift to high temperature with increasing pressure. The resistivity hump could arise from the vacancy of Fe or Se.

SDW transition of Fe1 zigzag chains and metamagnetic transition of Fe2 in TaFe$_{1+y}$Te$_3$

We systematically study the AFM order of Fe1 zigzag chains and spin-flop of excess Fe2 under high magnetic field H through the susceptibility, magnetoresistance (MR), Hall effect and specific heat measurements in high-quality single crystal TaFe$_{1+y}$Te$_3$. These properties suggest that the high temperature AFM transition of the TaFeTe$_3$ layers should be a SDW-type AFM order. Below T$_N$, Fe1 antiferromangetic zigzag chains will induce a inner magnetic field \textbf{H$_{int}$} to interstitial Fe2 and lead Fe2 also forms an AFM alignment, in which the magnetic coupling strength between Fe1 and Fe2 is enhanced by decreasing temperature. On the other hand, the external magnetic field \textbf{H$_{ext}$} inclines to tune interstitial Fe2 to form FM alignment along \textbf{H$_{ext}$}. When \textbf{H$_{ext}$} arrives at the "coercive" field H$_C$, which is able to break the coupling between Fe1 and Fe2, these interstitial Fe2 atoms take a spin-flop from AFM to FM alignment. The local moment of Fe2 is about 4 $μ_{\textrm{B}}$/Fe. From low field ($<$H$_C$) AFM to high field ($>$H$_C$) FM for Fe2, it also induces sharp drop on resistivity and an anomalous Hall effect. The possible magnetic structure of TaFe$_{1+y}$Te$_3$ is proposed from the susceptibility and MR. The properties related to the spin-flop of Fe2 supply a good opportunity to study the coupling between Fe1 and Fe2 in these TaFe$_{1+y}$Te$_3$ or Fe$_{1+y}$Te with interstitial Fe2 compounds.

Superconductivity at 5 K in potassium doped phenanthrene

Organic materials are believed to be potential superconductor with high transition temperature (TC). Organic superconductors mainly have two families: the quasi-one dimensional (TMTSF)2X and two dimensional (BEDT-TTF)2X (Ref. 1 and 2), in which TMTSF is tetramethyltetraselenafulvalene (C10H12Se4) and BEDT-TTF or "ET" is bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (C10H8S8). One key feature of the organic superconductors is that they have π-molecular orbitals, and the π-electron can delocalize throughout the crystal giving rise to metallic conductivity due to a π-orbital overlap between adjacent molecules. The introduction of charge into C60 solids and graphites with π-electron networks by doping to realize superconductivity has been extensively reported3,4. Very recently, superconductivity in alkali-metal doped picene with π-electron networks was reported5. Here we report the discovery of superconductivity in potassium doped Phenanthrene with TC~5 K. TC increases with increasing pressure, and the pressure of 1 GPa leads to an increase of 20% in TC, suggesting that the potassium doped phenanthrene shows unconventional superconductivity. Both phenanthrene and picene are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and contain three and five fused benzene rings, respectively. The ribbon of fused benzene rings is part of graphene. Therefore, the discovery of superconductivity in K3Phenanthrene produces a novel broad class of superconductors consisting of fused hydrocarbon benzene rings with π-electron networks. The fact that TC increases from 5 K for KxPhenanthrene with three benzene rings to 18 K for Kxpicene with five benzene rings suggests that such organic hydrocarbons with long benzene rings is potential superconductor with high TC.

Distinct electronic nematicities between electron and hole underdoped iron pnictides

We systematically investigated the in-plane resistivity anisotropy of electron-underdoped $EuFe_{2-x}Co_xAs_2$ and $BaFe_{2-x}Co_xAs_2$, and hole-underdoped $Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2$. Large in-plane resistivity anisotropy was found in the former samples, while {\it tiny} in-plane resistivity anisotropy was detected in the latter ones. When it is detected, the anisotropy starts above the structural transition temperature and increases smoothly through it. As the temperature is lowered further, the anisotropy takes a dramatic enhancement through the magnetic transition temperature. We found that the anisotropy is universally tied to the presence of non-Fermi liquid T-linear behavior of resistivity. Our results demonstrate that the nematic state is caused by electronic degrees of freedom, and the microscopic orbital involvement in magnetically ordered state must be fundamentally different between the hole and electron doped materials.

Heavily electron-doped electronic structure and isotropic superconducting gap in AxFe2Se2 (A=K,Cs)

The low energy band structure and Fermi surface of the newly discovered superconductor, AxFe2Se2 (A=K,Cs), have been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Compared with iron pnictide superconductors, AxFe2Se2 (A=K,Cs) is the most heavily electron-doped with Tc~30 K. Only electron pockets are observed with an almost isotropic superconducting gap of ~10.3 meV, while there is no hole Fermi surface near the zone center, which indicates the inter-pocket hopping or Fermi surface nesting is not a necessary ingredient for the unconventional superconductivity in iron-based superconductors. Thus, the sign changed s$_\pm$ pairing symmetry, a leading candidate proposed for iron-based superconductors, becomes conceptually irrelevant in describing the superconducting state here. A more conventional s-wave pairing is a better description.

Reentrant spin-glass behavior in $TlFe_{2-x}Se_2$ with the $ThCr_2Si_2$-type structure

We investigated the physical properties of $TlFe_{2-x}Se_2$ single crystals. The resistivity of $TlFe_{2-x}Se_2$ shows typical semiconductor behavior with an activation energy of 25 meV. DC susceptibility indicates an antiferromagnetic transition at about 450 K. Reentrant spin-glass (RSG) behavior was found at about 130 K through DC and AC magnetic measurements. The RSG behavior suggests the existence of a strong competition between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions due to Fe deficiencies. Strong electron-electron correlation may exist in this material and it is possibly a candidate of parent compound for high $T_c$ superconductors.

Superconductivity and Magnetic Properties of high-quality single crystals of $A_{x}$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ ($A$ = K and Cs)

We successfully grew the high-quality single crystals of $A_{x}$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ ($A$ = K and Cs) by self-flux method. Sharp superconducting transition was observed for both types of crystals. The crystals show the onset superconducting transition temperatures ($T_{\rm c}$) of 31 K and 30 K for K- and Cs-compounds, respectively, with nearly 100% shielding fraction. The crystals show quite high resistivity in the normal state of more than 160 m$Ω$ cm and 1300 m$Ω$ cm maximum resistivity for $K_{0.86}Fe_2Se_{1.82}$ and $Cs_{0.86}Fe_{1.66}Se_{2}$ single crystals, respectively. Much larger upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$ is inferred from low-temperature iso-magnetic-field magnetoresistance in these crystals than in FeSe. The anisotropy $H^{ab}_{\rm c2}$(0)/$H^{c}_{\rm c2}$(0) is around 3 for both of the two materials. Anisotropic peculiar magnetic behavior in normal state has been found for $Cs_{0.86}Fe_{1.66}Se_{2}$

Superconductivity at 32 K in single crystal Rb$_{0.78}$Fe$_2$Se$_{1.78}$}

We successfully grew the high-quality single crystal of Rb$_{0.78}$Fe$_2$Se$_{1.78}$, which shows sharp superconducting transition in magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity. Resistivity measurements show the onset superconducting transition ($T_{\rm c}$) at 32.1 K and zero resistivity at 30 K. From the low-temperature iso-magnetic-field magnetoresistance, large upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$(0) has been estimated as high as 180 T for in-plane field and 59 T for out-of-plane field. The anisotropy $H^{ab}_{\rm c2}$(0)/$H^{c}_{\rm c2}$(0) is around 3.0, right lying between those observed in K$_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ and Cs$_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$.

Magnetotransport properties in purple bronze Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ Single Crystal

We have measured resistivity along the a, b and c axes of Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ single crystal. The anisotropy $ρ$$_c$ / $ρ$$_a$ and $ρ$$_c$ / $ρ$$_b$ is given, confirming the quasi-one-dimensionality of the compound. The sharp decrease in the anisotropy below a certain temperature (T$_M$) indicates dimensional crossover. Superconductivity occurs at 1.8 K well below $T_M$. Negative MRs are observed with magnetic field (H) applied along b axis. This could be ascribed to suppression of energy gap associated with CDW state. While large positive MR is observed with H $\parallel$ c-axis. The MR data can be well fitted by a modified two-band model which has been used in CDW compounds such as quasi-two-dimensional purple bronzes A$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ (A = K, Na, Tl) and quasi-one-dimensional conductor NbSe$_3$. The behavior of MR provides a strong evidence for the existence of CDW instability in $Li_{0.9}Mo_6O_{17}$.

Structure and Physical properties of New layered oxypnictides $Sr_4Sc_2O_6M_2As_2$ (M=Fe and Co)

We have successfully prepared the new layered oxypnictides $Sr_4Sc_2O_6M_2As_2$ (M=Fe and Co). They adopt the tetragonal structure, being the same as that of $Sr_4Sc_2O_6Fe_2P_2$. The lattice constants are a=0.4045 nm and c= 0.5802 nm for M=Fe, and a=0.4045 nm and c=1.5695 nm for M=Co, respectively. Their transport and magnetic properties have been systematically studied. The temperature dependence of Hall coefficient and thermoelectric powder for $Sr_4Sc_2O_6Fe_2As_2$ compound show complicated behavior, similar to that of iron-based parent compounds LnOFeAs and $BaFe_2As_2$. It suggests that the $Sr_4Sc_2O_6Fe_2As_2$ could be considered a new parent compound as iron-based superconductors.
