Fermion mass hierarchy in an extended left-right symmetric model

We present a Left-Right symmetric model that provides an explanation for the mass hierarchy of the charged fermions within the framework of the Standard Model. This explanation is achieved through the utilization of both tree-level and radiative seesaw mechanisms. In this model, the tiny masses of the light active neutrinos are generated via a three-loop radiative inverse seesaw mechanism, with Dirac and Majorana submatrices arising at one-loop level. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of the inverse seesaw mechanism being implemented with both submatrices generated at one-loop level. The model contains a global $U(1)_{X}$ symmetry which, after its spontaneous breaking, allows for the stabilization of the Dark Matter (DM) candidates. We show that the electroweak precision observables, the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments as well as the Charged Lepton Flavor Violating decays, $μ\rightarrow e γ$, are consistent with the current experimental limits. In addition, we analyze the implications of the model for the $95$ GeV diphoton excess recently reported by the CMS collaboration and demonstrate that such anomaly could be easily accommodated. Finally, we discuss qualitative aspects of DM in the considered model.

A renormalizable left-right symmetric model with low scale seesaw mechanisms

We propose a low scale renormalizable left-right symmetric theory that successfully explains the observed SM fermion mass hierarchy, the tiny values for the light active neutrino masses and is consistent with the lepton and baryon asymmetries of the Universe, the muon and electron anomalous magnetic moments as well as the with the constraints arising from the meson oscillations. In the proposed model the top and exotic quarks obtain masses at tree level, whereas the masses of the bottom, charm and strange quarks, tau and muon leptons are generated from a tree level Universal Seesaw mechanism, thanks to their mixings with the charged exotic vector like fermions. The masses for the first generation SM charged fermions arise from a radiative seesaw mechanism at one loop level, mediated by charged vector like fermions and electrically neutral scalars. The light active neutrino masses are produced from a one-loop level inverse seesaw mechanism mediated by electrically neutral scalar singlets and right handed Majorana neutrinos. Our model is also consistent with the experimental constraints arising from the Higgs diphoton decay rate as well as with the constraints arising from charged lepton flavor violation. We also discuss the $Z^{\prime }$ and heavy scalar production at a proton-proton collider.

Predictions for the Sivers Single-Spin Asymmetry from Holographic QCD

A new approach to nonperturbative QCD, holographic light-front QCD, provides a comprehensive model for hadron dynamics and spectroscopy, incorporating color confinement, a universal hadron mass scale, the prediction of a massless pion in the chiral limit, and connections between the spectroscopy of mesons, baryons and tetraquarks across the full hadron spectrum. In this article we present predictions for the Sivers asymmetry and related transverse momentum distributions for the proton based on the light-front wavefunctions of the baryon eigenstate predicted by holographic QCD.

Universal Inverse seesaw mechanism as a source of the SM fermion mass hierarchy

We build a renormalizable theory where the inverse seesaw mechanism explains the pattern of SM fermion masses. To the best of our knowledge, our model corresponds to the first implementation of the inverse seesaw mechanism for the charged fermion sector. In our theory, the inverse seesaw mechanism is implemented at the tree and one-loop levels in order to generate the masses for the second and first families of the SM charged fermions, respectively. The third family of SM charged fermions obtain tree-level masses from the Higgs doublets $ϕ_{1}$ (for the top quark) and $ϕ_{2}$ (for the bottom quark and tau lepton). The masses of the active light neutrinos are generated from a two-loop level inverse seesaw mechanism. Our model successfully explains the observed SM fermion mass hierarchy, the tiny masses of the active light neutrinos, contains the necessary means for efficient leptogenesis and is in accordance with the constraints resulting from meson oscillations, as well as with the measured values of the observed dark matter relic density and of the muon and electron anomalous magnetic moments.

Electromagnetic properties of the nucleon and the Roper resonance in soft-wall AdS/QCD at finite temperature

We present a study of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors and of the Roper-nucleon transition at finite small temperature $T$, using an extended version of a soft-wall AdS/QCD approach developed by us previously. In the action we introduce the effective potential, which has quadratic dependence on the holographic coordinate $z$ and depends on both the gluon and quark condensates. Choosing the AdS geometry we restrict ourselves to the AdS Poincaré metric, because the contribution of the AdS-Schwarzschild geometry starts at next-to-leading order ${\cal O}(T^4)$. Hence, one can neglect the temperature dependence of the AdS geometry at small $T$. This is consistent with the Hawking-Page phase transition at a critical temperature representing the transition between thermal AdS/QCD and AdS-Schwarzschild geometry. In the small temperature regime we base our analysis on the temperature dependence of the effective potential, which starts at order ${\cal O}(T^2)$, due to the leading contribution from the quark condensate. As applications we present the analysis of properties of the nucleon and Roper resonance (masses, form factors, and helicity amplitudes) at low temperatures.

How low-scale Trinification sheds light in the flavour hierarchies, neutrino puzzle, dark matter and leptogenesis

We propose a low-scale renormalizable trinification theory that successfully explains the flavor hierarchies and neutrino puzzle in the Standard Model (SM), as well as provides a dark matter candidate and also contains the necessary means for efficient leptogenesis. The proposed theory is based on the trinification $\SU{3}{C}\times \SU{3}{L}\times \SU{3}{R}$ gauge symmetry, which is supplemented with an additional flavor symmetry $\U{X}\times Z_{2}^{(1)} \times Z_{2}^{(2)}$. In the proposed model the top quark and the exotic fermions acquire tree-level masses, whereas the lighter SM charged fermions gain masses radiatively at one-loop level. In addition, the light active neutrino masses arise from a combination of radiative and type-I seesaw mechanisms, with the Dirac neutrino mass matrix generated at one-loop level.

Production mechanisms of open-heavy flavor mesons

In this paper we discuss different mechanisms of open-heavy flavor meson production. Using the color dipole framework, we analyze in detail the contributions of the conventional two-pomeron fusion and the three-pomeron fusion correction. In a parameter-free way we found that the three-pomeron mechanism is significant for $D$-meson production in the small-$p_{T}$ kinematics, although it is less important at large $p_{T}$, as well as for $B$-mesons. The inclusion of the three-pomeron mechanism significantly improves the agreement of theoretical predictions with experimental data in the small-$p_{T}$ kinematics. We also consider the non-prompt charmonia production, and demonstrate that the theoretical results are in reasonable agreement with experimental data. Finally, we compare the theoretical predictions for the dependence on multiplicity of co-produced hadrons to experimental data recently measured by the ALICE collaboration. We found that, contrary to naive expectations, the contribution of the three-pomeron mechanism has only a mild effect on the self-normalized observables in the range of multiplicities studied at ALICE, and for this reason the two-pomeron fusion mechanism can describe reasonably well the experimentally observed multiplicity dependence.

Scaling of PDFs, TMDs, and GPDs in soft-wall AdS/QCD

We explicitly demonstrate how to correctly define the hadronic parton distributions (PDFs, TMDs, and GPDs) in the soft-wall AdS/QCD approach, based on the use of a quadratic dilaton field, providing confinement and spontaneous breaking of conformal and chiral symmetries. The power behavior of parton distributions at large values of the light-cone variable is consistent with quark counting rules and Drell-Yan-West duality. All parton distributions are defined in terms of profile functions, which depend on the light-cone coordinate and are fixed from PDFs and electromagnetic form factors.

Sequentially loop supressed fermion masses from a unique discrete symmetry

We propose a systematic and renormalizable sequential loop suppression mechanism to generate the hierarchy of the Standard Model fermion masses from one discrete symmetry. The discrete symmetry is sequentially softly broken in order to generate one-loop level masses for the bottom, charm, tau and muon leptons and two-loop level masses for the lightest Standard Model charged fermions. The tiny masses for the light active neutrinos are produced from radiative type-I seesaw mechanism, where the Dirac mass terms are effectively generated at two-loop level.

Heavy quarkonium in saturated environment of high-multiplicity pp collisions

High-multiplicity pp collisions exhibit features, traditionally associated with nuclear effects. Coherence motivates to treat high-multiplicity pp, pA and AA collisions on an equal footing. We rely on the phenomenological parametrization for mean multiplicities of light hadrons and J/psi, assuming their linear dependence on N_{coll} in pA collisions. The results of this approach underestimate the recently measured production rate of J/psi at very high hadronic multiplicities. The linear dependence of J/psi multiplicity on N_{coll} is subject to predicted nonlinear corrections, related to mutual boosting of the saturation scales in colliding dense parton clouds. A parameter-free calculation of the non-linear corrections allows to explain data for pT-integrated yield of J/psi at high hadronic multiplicities. Calculations are in a good accord with data binned in several pT-intervals as well. As was predicted, Upsilon and J/psi are equally suppressed at forward rapidities in pA collisions. Consequently, their fractional multiplicities at forward rapidities in pp collisions are equal as well, and their magnitude agrees with data.

Low-scale seesaw from neutrino condensation

Knowledge of the mechanism of neutrino mass generation would help understand a lot more about Lepton Number Violation (LNV), the cosmological evolution of the Universe, or the evolu tion of astronomical objects. Here we propose a verifiable and viable extension of the Standard model for neutrino mass generation, with a low-scale seesaw mechanism via LNV condensation in the sector of sterile neutrinos. To prove the concept, we analyze a simplified model of just one single family of elementary particles and check it against a set of phenomenological constraints coming from electroweak symmetry breaking, neutrino masses, leptogenesis and dark matter. The model predicts (i) TeV scale quasi-degenerate heavy sterile neutrinos, suitable for leptogenesis with resonant enhancement of the CP asymmetry, (ii) a set of additional heavy Higgs bosons whose existence can be challenged at the LHC, (iii) an additional light and sterile Higgs scalar which is a candidate for decaying warm dark matter, and (iv) a majoron. Since the model is based on simple and robust principles of dynamical mass generation, its parameters are very restricted, but remarkably it is still within current phenomenological limits.

Deuteron electromagnetic structure functions and polarization properties in soft-wall AdS/QCD

We apply a soft-wall AdS/QCD approach to the description of deuteron structure functions and tensor polarized properties. Present work is a completion of our previous study on electromagnetic form factors. By the appropriate choice of two couplings in the effective action we are able to reproduce both the form factors and structure functions in full consistency with model-independent constraints set by perturbative QCD. Our framework is based on a five-dimensional action in AdS space formulated in terms of vector fields dual to the deuteron and the electromagnetic fields. The AdS fields depend on four Minkowski and one holographic coordinate $z$. The scale dependence of the form factors and structure functions is consistent with quark counting rules implying the $1/Q^{10}$ behavior of the charge form factor $G_C(Q^2)$, structure functions $A(Q^2)$ and $B(Q^2)$, and the $1/Q^{12}$ behavior of the magnetic $G_M(Q^2)$ and quadrupole $G_Q(Q^2)$ form factors.

Nonperturbative contribution to the strange-antistrange asymmetry of the nucleon sea

We give predictions for the nonperturbative (intrinsic) contribution to the $s(x) - \bar{s}(x)$ asymmetry of the nucleon sea. For this purpose we use different light-front wave functions inspired by the AdS/QCD formalism, together with a model of the nucleon in terms of meson-baryon fluctuations. The holographic wave functions for an arbitrary number of constituents, recently derived by us, give results quite close to known parametrizations that appear in the literature.

Production of pentaquarks in $pA$-collisions

We argue that a hidden-charm pentaquark recently observed in weak decays of $Λ_{b}$ can be produced in proton-nucleus collisions without electroweak intermediaries. We analyze the production cross-section for several scenarios of internal structure and find that a cross-section is sizable. This process can be studied both in collider as well as in fixed-target experiments. In the former case, the pentaquarks are produced at very forward rapidities, whereas in the latter case, pentaquarks are produced with relatively small rapidities and can be easily detected via invariant mass distribution of a forward $J/ψ$ and a comoving proton. Additionally, the suggested process allows to check the existence of a neutral pentaquark $P_{c}^{0}$ (an isospin partner of $P_{c}^{+}$) predicted in several models. The rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of pentaquarks could provide comprehensive information about the $\bar{c}c$ component of this exotic baryon.

Twist-3 fragmentation functions in a spectator model with gluon rescattering

We study the twist-3 fragmentation functions $H$ and $\tilde{H}$, by applying a spectator model. In the calculation we consider the effect of the gluon rescattering at one loop level. We find that in this case the hard-vertex diagram, which gives zero contribution to the Collins function, does contribute to the fragmentation function $H$. The calculation shows that the twist-3 T-odd fragmentation functions are free of light-cone divergences. The parameters of the model are fitted from the known parametrization of the unpolarized fragmentation $D_1$ and the Collins function $H_1^\perp$. We find our result for the favored fragmentation function is consistent with the recent extraction on $H$ and $\tilde{H}$ from pp data. We also check numerically the equation of motion relation for $H$, $\tilde{H}$ and find that relation holds fairly well in the spectator model.

Twist-3 T-odd fragmentation functions $G^\perp$ and $\tilde{G}^\perp$ in a spectator model

We present a calculation of the twist-3 T-odd chiral-even fragmentation functions $G^{\perp}$ and $\tilde{G}^{\perp}$ using a spectator model. We consider the effect gluon exchange to calculate all necessary one-loop diagrams for the quark-quark and quark-gluon-quark correlation functions. We find that the gluon loops corrections generate non-zero contribution to these two fragmentation function. We numerically calculate their half-$k_T$ moments by integrating over the transverse momentum and also verify the equation of motion relation among $G^{\perp}$, $\tilde{G}^{\perp}$ and the Collins function.

Axions in gravity with torsion

We study a scenario allowing a solution of the strong charge parity problem via the Peccei-Quinn mechanism, implemented in gravity with torsion. In this framework there appears a torsion-related pseudoscalar field known as Kalb-Ramond axion. We compare it with the so-called Barbero-Immirzi axion recently proposed in the literature also in the context of the gravity with torsion. We show that they are equivalent from the viewpoint of the effective theory. The phenomenology of these torsion-descended axions is completely determined by the Planck scale without any additional model parameters. These axions are very light and very weakly interacting with ordinary matter. We briefly comment on their astrophysical and cosmological implications in view of the recent BICEP2 and Planck data.

Bimetric Gravity From Adjoint Frame Field In Four Dimensions

We provide a novel model of gravity by using adjoint frame fields in four dimensions. It has a natural interpretation as a gravitational theory of a complex metric field, which describes interactions between two real metrics. The classical solutions establish three appealing features. The spherical symmetric black hole solution has an additional hair, which includes the Schwarzschild solution as a special case. The de Sitter solution is realized without introducing a cosmological constant. The constant flat background breaks the Lorentz invariance spontaneously, although the Lorentz breaking effect can be localized to the second metric while the first metric still respects the Lorentz invariance.

Double Spin Asymmetries $A_{LT}^{\cosϕ_S}$ and $A_{LT}^{\cos(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)}$ in semi-inclusive DIS

We investigate the double spin asymmetries of pion production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with a longitudinal polarized beam off a transversely polarized proton target. Particularly, we consider the $\cosϕ_S$ and $\cos(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)$ modulations, which can be interpreted by the convolution of the twist-3 transverse momentum dependent distributions and twist-2 fragmentation functions. Three different origins are taken into account simultaneously for each asymmetry: the $g_T D_1$ term, the $e_T H_1^\perp$ term, and the $e_T^\perp H_1^\perp$ term in the $\cosϕ_S$ asymmetry; and the $g_T^\perp D_1$ term, the $e_T H_1^\perp$ term, and the $e_T^\perp H_1^\perp$ term in the $\cos(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)$ asymmetry. We calculate the four twist-3 distributions $g_T(x,\boldsymbol{k}_T^2)$, $g_T^\perp(x,\boldsymbol{k}_T^2)$, $e_T(x,\boldsymbol{k}_T^2)$, and $e_T^\perp(x,\boldsymbol{k}_T^2)$ in a spectator-diquark model including vector diquarks. Then we predict the two corresponding asymmetries for charged and neutral pions at the kinematics of HERMES, JLab, and COMPASS for the first time. The numerical estimates indicate that the two different angular-dependence asymmetries are sizable by several percent at HERMES and JLab, and the $\cosϕ_S$ asymmetry has a strong dependence on the Bjorken $x$. Our predictions also show that the dominant contribution to the $\cosϕ_S$ asymmetry comes from the $g_T D_1$ term, while the $g_T^\perp D_1$ term gives the main contribution to the $\cos(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)$ asymmetry; the other two $T$-odd terms almost give negligible contributions. In particular, the $\cos(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)$ asymmetry provides a unique opportunity to probe the distribution $g_T^\perp$.

Nuclear effects in neutrinoproduction of pions

In this paper we study nuclear effects in the neutrinoproduction of pions. We found that in a Bjorken kinematics, for moderate $x_{B}$ accessible in ongoing and forthcoming neutrino experiments the cross-section is dominated by the incoherent contribution; the coherent contribution becomes visible only for small $|t|\lesssim1/R_{A}^{2}$, which requires $x_{B}\lesssim0.1$. Our results could be relevant to the kinematics of the ongoing MINERvA experiment in ME configuration. We provide a code which could be used for evaluation of the $ν$DVMP observables using different parametrizations of GPDs and different models of nuclear structure.

Nuclear physics in soft-wall AdS/QCD: Deuteron electromagnetic form factors

We present a high-quality description of the deuteron electromagnetic form factors in a soft-wall AdS/QCD approach. We first propose an effective action describing the dynamics of the deuteron in the presence of an external vector field. Based on this action the deuteron electromagnetic form factors are calculated, displaying the correct 1/Q^10 power scaling for large Q^2 values. This finding is consistent with quark counting rules and the earlier observation that this result holds in confining gauge/gravity duals. The Q^2 dependence of the deuteron form factors is defined by a single and universal scale parameter kappa, which is fixed from data.

On relation between rest frame and light-front descriptions of quarkonium

In this paper we study the relation between the light-front (infinite momentum) and rest-frame descriptions of quarkonia. While the former is more convenient for high-energy production, the latter is usually used for the evaluation of charmonium properties. In particular, we discuss the dynamics of a relativistically moving system with nonrelativistic internal motion and give relations between rest frame and light-front potentials used for the description of quarkonium states. We consider two approximations, first the small coupling regime, and next the nonperturbative small binding energy approximation. In both cases we get consistent results. Our results could be relevant for the description of final state interactions in a wide class of processes, including quarkonium production on nuclei and plasma. Moreover, they can be extended to the description of final state interactions in the production of weakly bound systems, such as for example the deuteron.

Pion-pion cross section from proton-proton collisions at the LHC

The zero-degree calorimeters (ZDC) installed in the ALICE, ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC, make possible simultaneous detection of forward-backward leading neutrons, pp=>nXn. Such data with sufficiently high statistics could be a source of information about the pion-pion total cross section at high energies, provided that the absorption corrections, which are expected to be strong, are well understood. Otherwise, making a plausible assumption about the magnitude of the pion-pion cross section, one can consider such measurements as a way to study the absorption effects, which is the main focus of the present paper. These effects introduced at the amplitude level, are found to be different for the pion fluxes, which either conserve or flip the nucleon helicity. The pion fluxes from both colliding protons are essentially reduced by absorption, moreover, there is a common absorption suppression factor, which breaks down the factorized form of the cross section. We also evaluate the feed-down corrections related to the initial/final state inelastic processes possessing a rapidity gap, and found them to be small in the kinematic range under consideration. The contribution of other iso-vector Reggeons, spin-flip natural parity rho and a2, and spin non-flip unnatural parity a1 are also evaluated and found to be rather small.

Production of neutrons in the vicinity of the pion pole

High-energy hadronic reactions with proton-to-neutron transitions (and vice versa) with small momentum transfer allow to study the properties of nearly on-shell pions, which cannot be accessed otherwise. We overview the recent results for such processes in deeply inelastic scattering, single and double leading neutron production in pp collisions, including polarization effect. A special attention is paid to the absorption effects, which are found to be much stronger than what has been evaluated previously.

Charmonium in a hot medium: melting vs absorption

A charmonium produced in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC propagates through a dense co-moving matter with a rather high relative momentum, <p_T^2>=4-10GeV^2. In spite of Debye screening of the binding potential, the charmonium survives with a substantial probability, even if the c-cbar potential is completely screened in the hot environment. In addition, the color-exchange interaction with the medium is another important source of charmonium suppression. Attenuation in a hot medium caused by both effects is evaluated by means of the path integral technique, which requires ability of boosting the binding potential to a moving reference frame. This problem is solved in the approximation of small intrinsic velocities of the charmed quarks.

Generalized parton distributions from neutrino experiments: twist-three effects

We study the twist-3 corrections to the neutrino induced deeply virtual meson production due to the chiral odd transversity Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD). We found that in contrast to pion electroproduction, in neutrino-induced processes these corrections are small. This occurs due to large contribution of unpolarized GPDs $H,\, E$ to the twist-2 amplitude in neutrinoproduction. Our results are important for analyses of the pion and kaon production in the Minerva experiment at FERMILAB.

Higher-twist contributions to neutrino-production of pions

In this paper we estimate the size of twist-3 corrections to the deeply virtual meson production in neutrino interactions due to the chiral odd transversity Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD). We conclude that in contrast to pion electroproduction, in neutrino-induced reactions these corrections are small. This happens due to large contribution of unpolarized GPDs H, E to the leading-twist amplitude in neutrinoproduction. We provide a computational code, which can be used for evaluation of the cross-sections accounting for these twist-3 corrections with various GPD models. Our results are particularly relevant for analyses of the pion and kaon production in the Minerva experiment at FERMILAB.

Quenching of high-pT hadrons: a non-energy-loss scenario

A parton produced with a high transverse momentum in a hard collision is regenerating its color field, intensively radiating gluons and losing energy. This process cannot last long, if it ends up with production of a leading hadron carrying the main fraction z_h of the initial parton momentum. So energy conservation imposes severe constraints on the length scale of production of a single hadron with high pT. As a result, the main reason for hadron quenching observed in heavy ion collisions, is not energy loss, but attenuation of the produced colorless dipole in the created dense medium. The latter mechanism, calculated with the path-integral method, explains well the observed suppression of light hadrons and the elliptic flow in a wide range of energies, from the lowest energy of RHIC up to LHC, and in a wide range of transverse momenta. The values of the transport coefficient extracted from data range within 1-2 GeV^2/fm, dependent on energy, and agree well with the theoretical expectations.

Survival of charmonia in a hot environment

A colorless c-cbar dipole emerging from a heavy ion collision and developing the charmonium wave function can be broken-up by final state interactions (FSI) propagating through the hot medium created in the collision. We single out two mechanisms of charmonium attenuation: (i) Debye color screening, called melting; and (ii) color-exchange interaction with the medium, called absorption. The former problem has been treated so far only for charmonia at rest embedded in the medium, while in practice their transverse momenta at the LHC are quite high, <p_T^2>=7-10 GeV^2. We demonstrate that a c-cbar dipole may have a large survival probability even at infinitely high temperature. We develop a procedure of Lorentz boosting of the Schroedinger equation to a moving reference frame and perform the first realistic calculations of the charmonium survival probability employing the path-integral technique, incorporating both melting and absorption. These effects are found to have comparable magnitudes. We also calculated the FSI suppression factor for the radial excitation psi(2S) and found it to be stronger than for J/psi, except large p_T, where psi(2S) is relatively enhanced. The azimuthal asymmetry parameter v_2 is also calculated.

Torsion in Extra Dimensions and One-Loop Observables

We study gravity with torsion in extra dimensions and derive an effective four-dimensional theory containing four-fermion contact operators at the fundamental scale of quantum gravity in the TeV range. These operators may have an impact on the low-energy observables and can manifest themselves or can be constrained in precision measurements. We calculate possible contributions of these operators to some observables at the one-loop level. We show that the existing precision data on the lepton decay mode of Z boson set limits on the fundamental scale of the gravity and compactification radius, which are more stringent than the limits previously derived in the literature.

Updated limits on extra dimensions through torsion and LHC data

It is well known that inclusion of torsion in the gravitational formalism, leads to four-fermion interactions. Although the coupling constant of this interaction is strongly suppressed in four dimensions, its value is enhanced in models with $n$ extra dimensions. In this context, we reinterpret the recent limits established by LHC experiments to four-fermion contact interactions, to set bounds on the size of the extra dimensions. For $n=2$, the limits are comparable to those in the literature, while for $n\ge 3$ the volume of the extra dimensions is strongly constrained.

Bethe-Heitler type radiative corrections to deeply virtual neutrinoproduction of mesons

We study the electromagnetic Bethe-Heitler type contribution to neutrino-induced deeply virtual meson production (\nuDVMP). Such O(α_{em})-corrections decrease with Q^{2} in the Bjorken regime less steeply than the standard \nuDVMP handbag contribution. Therefore, they are relatively enhanced at high Q^{2}. The Bethe-Heitler terms give rise to an angular correlation between the lepton and hadron scattering planes with harmonics sensitive to the real and imaginary parts of the DVMP amplitude. These corrections constitute a few percent effect in the kinematics of the forthcoming Minerva experiment at Fermilab and should be taken into account in precision tests of GPD parametrizations. For virtualities Q^{2}~100 GeV^{2} these corrections become on a par with DVMP handbag contributions. A computational code, which can be used for the evaluation of these corrections employing various GPD models is provided.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking and Meson Wave Functions in Soft-Wall AdS/QCD

We consider mesons composed of light and heavy quarks and discuss the construction of the corresponding meson wave functions in soft-wall AdS/QCD. We specifically take care that constraints imposed by chiral symmetry breaking and by the heavy quark limit are fulfilled. The main results are: i) the wave functions of light mesons have a nontrivial dependence on the current quark mass, which gives rise to a mass spectrum consistent with the one including explicit breaking of chiral symmetry; ii) the wave functions of heavy-light mesons generate their correct mass spectrum, the mass splittings of vector and pseudoscalar states, and the correct scaling of leptonic decay constants f(Q \bar q) \sim 1/sqrt(mQ); iii) the wave functions of heavy quarkonia produce their correct mass spectrum and lead to a scaling behaviour of the leptonic decay constants f(Q \bar Q) \sim sqrt(mQ) and f(c \bar b) \sim mc/sqrt(mb) at mc << mb, consistent with potential models and QCD sum rules.

Gauge Invariant Descriptions of Gluon Polarizations

We propose methods to construct gauge invariant decompositions of the nucleon spin, particularly gauge invariant descriptions of the gluon polarization. We show that gauge invariant decompositions of the nucleon spin can be derived naturally from the conserved current of a generalized Lorentz transformation by the Noether theorem. We propose a gauge invariant extension of the Chern-Simons current as a possible description of the gluon spin, and we also examine the problem of gauge dependence of this extended Chern-Simons current.

Gauge Invariant Descriptions of Gluon Polarizations Revisited

We examine the feasibility of gauge invariant descriptions of the gluon polarization following the proposal that a gauge field can be decomposed into its physical part and its pure gauge part. We show that gauge invariant angular momentum currents can be constructed from summations of gauge variant Noether currents. We present novel expressions of the pure gauge field, which are used to formulate gauge invariant descriptions of the gluon spin and the photon spin. We show that the gauge invariant extension of the Chern-Simons current can describe the spins of the Laguerre-Gauss laser modes. We also discuss the relation of gauge invariant operators and the parton distributions constructed from Dirac variables.

Generalized parton distributions from neutrino experiments

The analysis of deeply virtual meson production is extended to neutrino-production of the pseudo-Goldstone mesons (pions, kaons, eta-mesons) on nucleons, with the flavor content of the recoil baryon either preserved, or changed to a hyperon from the same SU(3) octet. We rely on the SU(3) relations and express all the cross-sections in terms of the proton generalized parton distributions (GPDs). The corresponding amplitudes are calculated at the leading twist level and in the leading order in α_{s}, using a phenomenological parametrization of GPDs. We also included in the analysis the electromagnetic O(alpha_{em})-corrections to neutrino-induced deeply virtual meson production (\nuDVMP). We found that such electromagnetic corrections decrease with Q^2 in the Bjorken regime less than the standard \nuDVMP handbag contribution, so the electromagnetic mechanism dominates at large Q^2. The electromagnetic corrections give rise to an angular correlation between the lepton and hadron scattering planes with harmonics sensitive to the real and imaginary parts of the DVMP amplitude. These corrections constitute a few percent effect in the kinematics of the forthcoming MINERvA experiment at Fermilab and should be taken into account in precise tests of GPD parametrizations. For virtualities Q^2~100 GeV^2 these corrections become on a par with \nuDVMP handbag contributions.

Impact-parameter dependent Color Glass Condensate dipole model and new combined HERA data

The Impact-Parameter dependent Color Glass Condensate (b-CGC) dipole model is based on the Balitsky-Kovchegov non-linear evolution equation and improves the Iancu-Itakura-Munier dipole model by incorporating the impact-parameter dependence of the saturation scale. Here we confront the model to the recently released high precision combined HERA data and obtain its parameters. The b-CGC results are then compared to data at small-x for the structure function, the longitudinal structure function, the charm structure function, exclusive vector meson (J/ψ, ϕ, ρ) production and Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS). We also compare our results with the Impact-Parameter dependent Saturation model (IP-Sat). We show that most features of inclusive DIS and exclusive diffractive data, including the Q^2, W, |t| and x dependence are correctly reproduced in both models. Nevertheless, the b-CGC and the IP-Sat models give different predictions beyond the current HERA kinematics, namely for the structure functions at very low x and high virtualities Q^2, and for the exclusive diffractive vector meson and DVCS production at high t. This can be traced back to the different power-law behavior of the saturation scale in x, and to a different impact-parameter b dependence of the saturation scale in these models. Nevertheless, both models give approximately similar saturation scale Q_S<1 GeV for the proton in HERA kinematics, and also both models lead to the same conclusion that the typical impact-parameter probed in the total γ^{*}p cross-section is about b\approx 2÷3 GeV^{-1}. Our results provide a benchmark for further investigation of QCD at small-x in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC and also at future experiments such as an Electron-Ion Collider and the LHeC.

J/Psi in high-multiplicity pp collisions: lessons from pA

Gluons at small x in high-energy nuclei overlap in the longitudinal direction, so the nucleus acts as a single source of gluons, like higher Fock components in a single nucleon, which contribute to inelastic collisions with a high multiplicity of produced hadrons. This similarity helps to make a link between nuclear effects in pA and high-multiplicity pp collisions. Such a relation is well confirmed by data for the J/Psi production rate in high-multiplicity pp events measured recently in the ALICE experiment. Broadening of J/Psi transverse momentum is predicted for high-multiplicity pp collisions.

Light-front quark model consistent with Drell-Yan-West duality and quark counting rules

We propose a phenomenological light-front wave function for hadrons with arbitrary twist-dimension (mesons, baryons and multiquark states), which gives the correct scaling behavior of structure functions (parton distributions) and form factors for pions and nucleons. For other hadronic states the proposed wave function produces form factors consistent with quark counting rules, and gives predictions for structure functions (parton distributions). As an application we build a light-front quark model for nucleons based on the proposed wave function.

Limits on Lepton Flavor Violation from μ-e-conversion

We revisit the status of Lepton Flavor Violating (LFV) μe qq contact interactions from the view point of μ- e -conversion in nuclei. We consider their contribution to this LFV process via the two mechanisms on the hadronic level: direct nucleon and meson exchange ones. In the former case the quarks are embedded directly into the nucleons while in the latter in mesons which then interact with nucleons in a nucleus. We revise and in some cases reevaluate the hadronic parameters relevant for both mechanisms and calculate the contribution of the above mentioned contact interactions in coherent μ- e -conversion in various nuclei. Then we update the existing upper bounds and also derive new ones for the scales of the μe qq contact interactions from the experimental limits on the capture rates of μ- e -conversion. We compare these limits with the ones derived in the literature from other LFV processes and comment on the prospects of LHC searches related to the contact μe qq interactions.

Nucleon resonances in AdS/QCD

We describe the electroproduction of the N(1440) Roper resonance in soft-wall AdS/QCD. The Roper resonance is identified as the first radially excited state of the nucleon, where higher-Fock states in addition to the three-quark component are included. The main conclusion is that the leading 3q component plays the dominant role in the description of electroproduction properties of this resonance: form factors, helicity amplitudes and charge densities. The obtained results are in good agreement with the recent results of the CLAS Collaboration at JLab.

Single-Spin Asymmetries in Semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering and Drell-Yan Processes

We examine in detail the diagrammatic mechanisms which provide the change of sign between the single transverse spin asymmetries measured in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and in the Drell-Yan process (DY). This asymmetry is known to arise due to the transverse spin dependence of the target proton combined with a T-odd complex phase. Using the discrete symmetry properties of transverse spinors, we show that the required complex phase originates in the denominators of rescattering diagrams and their respective cuts. For simplicity, we work in a model where the proton consists of a valence quark and a scalar diquark. We then show that the phases generated in SIDIS and in DY originate from distinctly different cuts in the amplitudes, which at first appears to obscure the relationship between the single-spin asymmetries in the two processes. Nevertheless, further analysis demonstrates that the contributions of these cuts are identical in the leading-twist Bjorken kinematics considered, resulting in the standard sign-flip relation between the Sivers functions in SIDIS and DY. Physically, this fundamental, but yet untested, prediction occurs because the Sivers effect in the Drell-Yan reaction is modified by the initial-state "lensing" interactions of the annihilating antiquark, in contrast to the final-state lensing which produces the Sivers effect in deep inelastic scattering.

Sterile neutrinos in lepton number and lepton flavor violating decays

We study the contribution of massive dominantly sterile neutrinos, $N$, to the Lepton Number and Lepton Flavor Violating semileptonic decays of $τ$ and $B, D, K$-mesons. We focus on special domains of sterile neutrino masses $m_{N}$ where it is close to its mass-shell. This leads to an enormous resonant enhancement of the decay rates of these processes. This allows us to derive stringent limits on the sterile neutrino mass $m_{N}$ and its mixing $U_{αN}$ with active flavors. We apply a joint analysis of the existing experimental bounds on the decay rates of the studied processes. In contrast to other approaches in the literature our limits are free from ad hoc assumptions on the relative size of the sterile neutrino mixing parameters. We analyze the impact of this sort of assumptions on the extraction of the limits on $m_{N}$ and $U_{αN}$, and discuss the effect of finite detector size. Special attention was paid to the limits on meson decays with $e^{\pm}e^{\pm}$ in final state, derived from non-observation of $0νββ$-decay. We point out that observation of these decays may, in particular, shed light on the Majorana phases of the neutrino mixing matrix.

Converting Classical Theories to Quantum Theories by Solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi Equation

By employing special solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and tools from lattice theories, we suggest an approach to convert classical theories to quantum theories for mechanics and field theories. Some nontrivial results are obtained for a gauge field and a fermion field. For a topologically massive gauge theory, we can obtain a first order Lagrangian with mass term. For the fermion field, in order to make our approach feasible, we supplement the conventional Lagrangian with a surface term. This surface term can also produce the massive term for the fermion.

Diffractive neutrino-production of pions on nuclei: Adler relation within the color-dipole description

Effects of coherence in neutrino-production of pions off nuclei are studied employing the color dipole representation and path integral technique. If the nucleus remains intact, the process is controlled by the interplay of two length scales. One is related to the pion mass and is quite long (at low Q^2), while the other, associated with heavy axial-vector states, is much shorter. The Adler relation is found to be broken at all energies, but especially strongly at ν> 10 GeV, where the cross section is suppressed by a factor ~A^{-1/3}. On the contrary, in a process where the recoil nucleus breaks up into fragments, the Adler relation turns out to be strongly broken at low energies, where the cross section is enhanced by a factor ~A^{1/3}, but has a reasonable accuracy at higher energies, where all the coherence length scales become long.

Dilaton in a soft-wall holographic approach to mesons and baryons

We discuss a holographic soft-wall model developed for the description of mesons and baryons with adjustable quantum numbers n, J, L, S. This approach is based on an action which describes hadrons with broken conformal invariance and which incorporates confinement through the presence of a background dilaton field. We show that in the case of the bound-state problem (hadronic mass spectrum) two versions of the model with a positive and negative dilaton profile are equivalent to each other by a special transformation of the bulk field. We also comment on recent works which discuss the dilaton sign in the context of soft-wall approaches.

Flavor structure of generalized parton distributions from neutrino experiments

The analysis of deeply virtual meson production is extended to neutrino-production of the pseudo-Goldstone mesons (pions, kaons, eta-mesons) on nucleons, with the flavor content of the recoil baryon either remaining intact, or changing to a hyperon from the SU(3) octet. We rely on the SU(3) relations and express all the cross-sections in terms of the proton generalized parton distributions (GPDs). The corresponding amplitudes are calculated at the leading twist level and in the leading order in α_{s}, using a phenomenological parametrization of GPDs. We provide a computational code, which can be used for evaluation of the cross-sections employing various GPD parametrizations. We conclude that these processes can be studied in the experiment Minerva at FERMILAB, which could supplement the measurements at JLAB and help to extract the GPD flavor structure from data.

Incurable Adler relation for soft neutrino interactions

The Adler relation (AR), which bridges soft interactions of neutrinos and pions, might look as a manifestation of pion dominance. However neutrino cannot fluctuate to a pion because of lepton current conservation, instead it interacts via much heavier hadronic components. This fact leads to nontrivial relations between interaction amplitudes of different hadronic species, in particular, it links diagonal and off-diagonal diffractive interactions of pions. Absorptive corrections break these relations making the AR impossible to hold universally, i.e. for any target and at any energy. We predict a dramatic breakdown of the AR for coherent neutrino-production of pions on nuclei at all energies.

Nonperturbative features of the axial current

We study the nonperturbative structure of the axial current and evaluate the two-point light-cone distribution amplitudes (DA) associated with the correlator \int dξexp(-iqξ)<0|\barψ(x)Γψ(y)J_μ^{5}(ξ)|0> within the instanton vacuum model in the leading order in O(1/N_c). Due to the built-in chiral symmetry, four of eight axial DAs are related to that for pions. Knowledge of these nonperturbative objects is important for phenomenological study of high-energy neutrino interactions and semileptonic decays of heavy quarks. We provide a code for evaluation of these DAs and an interpolation formula valid in the region Q^2 < 1 GeV^2.

Shadowing is a quantum phenomenon leading to a non-additivity of electroweak cross sections on nucleons bound in a nucleus. It occurs due to destructive interference of amplitudes on different nucleons. Nucleon structure including high Fock states in AdS/QCD

We present a detailed analysis of nucleon electromagnetic and axial form factors in a holographic soft-wall model. This approach is based on an action which describes hadrons with broken conformal invariance and incorporates confinement through the presence of a background dilaton field. For Nc=3 we describe the nucleon structure in a superposition of a three valence quark state with high Fock states including an adjustable number of partons (quarks, antiquarks and gluons) via studying the dynamics of 5D fermion fields of different scaling dimension in anti-de Sitter (ADS) space. According to the gauge/gravity duality the 5D fermion fields of different scaling dimension correspond to the Fock state components with a specific number of partons. In the present application we restrict to the contribution of 3, 4 and 5 parton components in the nucleon Fock state. With a minimal number of free parameters (dilaton scale parameter, mixing parameters of partial contributions of Fock states, coupling constants in the effective Lagrangian) we achieve a reasonable agreement with data for the nucleon form factors.

Pion structure function at small x from DIS data

Production of leading neutrons in DIS is usually considered as a tool to measure the pion structure function at small x accessible at HERA. The main obstacle is the lack of reliable evaluations of the absorption corrections, which significantly suppress the cross section. We performed a parameter free calculation within the dipole approach and found the absorption corrections to be nearly as strong, as for neutron production in pp collisions. We also included the significant contribution of the iso-vector Reggeons with natural (ρ, a_2) and unnatural (a_1, ρ-π cut) parity with parameters constrained by phenomenology. With a certain modeling for the pion-to-proton ratio of the structure functions we reached good agreement with data from the ZEUS and H1 experiments, successfully reproducing the observed dependence on the fractional neutron momentum z, the photon virtuality Q^2, and the transverse momentum transfer q_T.

Quenching of high-pT hadrons: Energy Loss vs Color Transparency

High-pT hadrons produced in hard collisions and detected inclusively bear peculiar features: (i) they originate from jets whose initial virtuality and energy are of the same order; (ii) such jets are rare and have a very biased energy sharing among the particles, namely, the detected hadron carries the main fraction of the jet energy. The former feature leads to an extremely intensive gluon radiation and energy dissipation at the early stage of hadronization, either in vacuum or in a medium. As a result, a leading hadron must be produced on a short length scale. Evaluation within a model of perturbative fragmentation confirms the shortness of the production length. This result is at variance with the unjustified assumption of long production length, made within the popular energy loss scenario. Thus we conclude that the main reason of suppression of high-pT hadrons in heavy ion collisions is the controlled by color transparency attenuation of a high-pT dipole propagating through the hot medium. Adjusting a single parameter, the transport coefficient, we describe quite well the data from LHC and RHIC for the suppression factor R_{AA} as function of pT, collision energy and centrality. We observe that the complementary effect of initial state interaction causes a flattening and even fall of R_{AA} at large pT. The azimuthal anisotropy of hadron production, calculated with no further adjustment, also agrees well with data at different energies and centralities.

Using a spectator diquark model, we calculate the eight time-reversal-odd interaction-dependent twist-3 quark distributions appearing in the decomposition of the transverse momentum dependent quark-gluon-quark correlator. Breakdown of PCAC in diffractive neutrino interactions

We test the hypothesis of partially conserved axial current (PCAC) in high energy diffractive neutrino production of pions. Since the pion pole contribution to the Adler relation (AR) is forbidden by conservation of the lepton current, the heavier states, like the a_1 pole, ρ-π-cut, etc., control the lifetime of the hadronic fluctuations of the neutrino. We evaluate the deviation from the AR in diffractive neutrino-production of pions on proton and nuclear targets. At high energies, when all the relevant time scales considerably exceed the size of the target, the AR explicitly breaks down on an absorptive target, such as a heavy nucleus. In this regime, close to the black disc limit, the off-diagonal diffractive amplitudes vanish, while the diagonal one, π->π, which enters the AR, maximizes and saturates the unitarity bound. At lower energies, in the regime of short lifetime of heavy hadronic fluctuations the AR is restored, i.e. it is not altered by the nuclear effects.

Color transparency and suppression of high-pT hadrons in nuclear collisions

The production length l_p of a leading (large z_h) hadron produced in hadronization of a highly virtual high-p_T parton is short because of the very intensive vacuum gluon radiation and dissipation of energy at the early stage of process. Therefore, the main part of nuclear suppression of high-p_T hadrons produced in heavy ion collisions is related to the survival probability of a colorless dipole propagating through a dense medium. This is subject to color transparency, which leads to a steep rise with p_T of the nuclear ratio R_{AA}(p_T), in good agreement with the recent data from the ALICE experiment at LHC, CERN. No adjustment, except the medium density is made, and the transport coefficient is found to be \hat q_0=0.8 GeV^2/fm. This is close to the value extracted from the analysis of RHIC data for J/Psi suppression, but is an order of magnitude smaller than the value found from jet quenching data within the energy loss scenario. Although the present calculations have a status of a postdiction, the mechanism and all formulas have been published, and are applied here with no modification, except the kinematics. At the same time, p_T-dependence of R_{AA} at the energy of RHIC is rather flat due to the suppression factor steeply falling with rising x_T, related to the energy conservation constraints. This factor is irrelevant to the LHC data, since x_T is much smaller.

Heavy Sterile Neutrinos in Tau Decays and the MiniBooNE Anomaly

Current results of the MiniBooNE experiment show excess events that indicate neutrino oscillations, but only if one goes beyond the standard 3 family scenario. Recently a different explanation of the events has been given, not in terms of oscillations but by the production and decay of a massive sterile neutrino with large transition magnetic moment. We study the effect of such a sterile neutrino in the rare decays $τ^- \rightarrow μ^- μ^+ π^- ν$ and $τ^{-}\rightarrow μ^{-} μ^{+} e^{-} νν$. We find that searches for these decays featuring displaced vertices between the $μ^-$ and the other charged particles, constitute good tests for the existence of the sterile neutrino proposed to explain the MiniBooNE anomaly. These searches could be done with already existing experimental data.

Mutual boosting of the saturation scales in colliding nuclei

Saturation of small-x gluons in a nucleus, which has the form of transverse momentum broadening of projectile gluons in pA collisions in the nuclear rest frame, leads to a modification of the parton distribution functions in the beam compared with pp collisions. The DGLAP driven gluon distribution turns out to be suppressed at large x, but significantly enhanced at x<<1. This is a high twist effect. In the case of nucleus-nucleus collisions all participating nucleons on both sides get enriched in gluon density at small x, which leads to a further boosting of the saturation scale. We derive reciprocity equations for the saturation scales corresponding to a collision of two nuclei. The solution of these equations for central collisions of two heavy nuclei demonstrate a significant, up to several times, enhancement of Q_{sA}^2, in AA compared with pA collisions.

Neutrino-production of single pions: dipole description

The light-cone distribution amplitudes for the axial current are derived within the instanton vacuum model (IVM), which incorporates nonperturbative effects including spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. This allows to extend applicability of the dipole approach, usually used in the perturbative domain, down to $Q^{2}\to0$, where partially conserved axial current (PCAC) imposes a relation between the neutrino-production cross section and the one induced by pions. A dramatic breakdown of the Adler relation (AR) for diffractive neutrino-production of pions, caused by absorptive corrections, was revealed recently in arXiv:1105.1711. Indeed, comparing with the cross section predicted by the dipole phenomenology at $Q^{2}\to0$ on a proton target we confirmed the sizable deviation from the value given by the AR, as was estimated in arXiv:1105.1711 within a simplified two-channel model. The dipole approach also confirms that in the black-disc limit, where the absorptive corrections maximize, the diffractive cross section ceases, on the contrary to the expectation based on PCAC.

On Sterile neutrino explanation of LSND and MiniBooNE anomalies

We examine the compatibility between existing experimental data and a recently proposed explanation of the LSND and MiniBooNE anomalies, given in terms of a sterile neutrino $N$ whose decay is dominated by a radiative mode. We find that current experimental data on $τ\rightarrow μννγ$ decays are compatible with the sterile neutrino parameters required for the explanation of the anomalies, but $K\rightarrow μνγ$ shows a marginal tension with those parameters. We also propose experimental cuts on radiative $K$ decays that could test the sterile neutrino hypothesis better. Finally, we study the contribution of this sterile neutrino to $K\toμνe e$, and find that measurements of this process would provide powerful tests for the sterile neutrino explanation of the LSND and MiniBooNE anomalies, if the experimental cut on the invariant mass of the $e^{+}e^{-}$ pair could be reduced from its current value of 145 MeV to a value below 40 MeV.

On sterile neutrino mixing with ν_τ

Matrix element $U_{τN}$ of sterile neutrino N mixing with $ν_τ$ is the least constrained in the literature among the three $U_{αN}$ ($α=e,μ,τ$) mixing parameters characterizing the sterile neutrino phenomenology. We study the contribution of massive dominantly sterile neutrinos to purely leptonic $τ$-decays and semileptonic decays of $τ$ and K, D mesons. We consider some decays allowed in the Standard Model (SM) as well as Lepton Flavor and Lepton Number Violating (LFV, LNV) decays forbidden in the SM. From the existing experimental data on the branching ratios of these processes we derived new limits on $U_{τN}$ more stringent than the ones existing in the literature. These limits are extracted in a model independent way without any ad hoc assumptions on the relative size of the three different sterile neutrino mixing parameters.

Single transverse spin asymmetry of forward neutrons

We calculate the single transverse spin asymmetry $A_N(t)$, for inclusive neutron production in $pp$ collisions at forward rapidities relative to the polarized proton in the energy range of RHIC. Absorptive corrections to the pion pole generate a relative phase between the spin-flip and non-flip amplitudes, leading to a transverse spin asymmetry which is found to be far too small to explain the magnitude of $A_N$ observed in the PHENIX experiment. A larger contribution, which does not vanish at high energies, comes from the interference of pion and $a_1$-Reggeon exchanges. The unnatural parity of $a_1$ guarantees a substantial phase shift, although the magnitude is strongly suppressed by the smallness of diffractive $πp\to a_1 p$ cross section. We replace the Regge $a_1$ pole by the Regge cut corresponding to the $πρ$ exchange in the $1^+S$ state. The production of such a state, which we treat as an effective pole $a$, forms a narrow peak in the $3π$ invariant mass distribution in diffractive $πp$ interactions . The cross section is large, so one can assume that this state saturates the spectral function of the axial current and we can determine its coupling to nucleons via the PCAC Goldberger-Treiman relation and the second Weinberg sum rule. The numerical results of the parameter-free calculation of $A_N$ are in excellent agreement with the PHENIX data.

The $\cos2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry of unpolarized dilepton production at the $Z$-pole

We calculate the Boer-Mulders effect contribution to the $\cos2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry of unpolarized dilepton production near the $Z$-pole. Based on the tree-level expression in the transverse momentum dependent factorization framework, we show that the corresponding asymmetry near the $Z$-pole is negative, which is opposite to the asymmetry in the low $Q^2$ region, dominated by the production via a virtual photon. We calculate the asymmetry generated by the Boer-Mulders effect near the $Z$-pole at RHIC, with $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV. We find that the magnitude of the asymmetry is several percent, and therefore it is measurable. The experimental confirmation of this sign change of the asymmetry from the low $Q^2$ region to the $Z$-pole provides direct evidence of the chiral odd structure of quarks inside an unpolarized nucleon.

B_s(d) - bar B_s(d) mixing constraints on flavor changing decays of t and b quarks

We study those dimension 6 effective operators which generate flavor-changing quark-gluon transitions of the third generation quarks, with t -> g + u(c) and b -> g + d(s), and which could be of interest for LHC experiments. We analyze the contribution of these operators to B_s(d) - bar B_s(d) mixing and derive limits on the corresponding effective couplings from the existing experimental data. The Standard Model gauge invariance relates these couplings to the couplings controlling t -> g + u(c). On this basis we derive upper limits for the branching ratios of these processes. We further show that forthcoming LHC experiments might be able to probe the studied operators and the physics beyond the Standard Model related to them.

Heavy quarkonium production: Nontrivial transition from pA to AA collisions

Two novel QCD effects, double color filtering and mutual boosting of the saturation scales in colliding nuclei, affect the transparency of the nuclei for quark dipoles in comparison with proton-nucleus collisions. The former effect increases the survival probability of the dipoles, since color filtering in one nucleus makes the other one more transparent. The second effect acts in the opposite direction and is stronger, it makes the colliding nuclei more opaque than in the case of pA collisions. As a result of parton saturation in nuclei the effective scale is shifted upwards, what leads to an increase of the gluon density at small x. This in turn leads to a stronger transverse momentum broadening in AA compared with pA collisions, i.e. to an additional growth of the saturation momentum. Such a mutual boosting leads to a system of reciprocity equations, which result in a saturation scale, a few times higher in AA than in pA collisions at the energies of LHC. Since the dipole cross section is proportional to the saturation momentum squared, the nuclei become much more opaque for dipoles in AA than in pA collisions. For the same reason gluon shadowing turns out to be boosted to a larger magnitude compared with the product of the gluon shadowing factors in each of the colliding nuclei. All these effects make it more difficult to establish a baseline for anomalous J/Psi suppression in heavy ion collisions at high energies.

J/Psi production in nuclear collisions: measuring the transport coefficient

The observed pT-dependence of nuclear effects for J/Psi produced in heavy ion collisions at RHIC might look puzzling, since the nuclear suppression seems to fade at large pT. We explain this by the interplay of three mechanisms: (i) attenuation of J/Psi in the hot medium created in the nuclear collision; (ii) initial state shadowing of charmed quarks and attenuation of a c-cbar dipole propagating through the colliding nuclei; (iii) a strong Cronin effect for J/Psi caused by saturation of gluons in the colliding nuclei. All three effects are well under control and calculated in a parameter free way, except for the transport coefficient q_0-hat characterizing the medium. This is adjusted to the J/Psi data and found to be in good agreement with the pQCD prediction, but more than an order of magnitude smaller than what was extracted from jet quenching data within the energy loss scenario.

Lepton number violation in theories with a large number of Standard Model copies

We examine lepton number violation (LNV) in theories with a saturated black hole bound on a large number of species. Such theories have been advocated recently as a possible solution to the hierarchy problem and an explanation of the smallness of neutrino masses. The violation of lepton number can be a potential phenomenological problem of this N-copy extension of the Standard Model as due to the low quantum gravity scale black holes may induce TeV scale LNV operators generating unacceptably large rates of LNV processes. We show, however, that this does not happen in this scenario due to a specific compensation mechanism between contributions of different Majorana neutrino states to these processes. As a result rates of LNV processes are extremely small and far beyond experimental reach, at least for the left-handed neutrino states.

Lepton number violating processes are a typical problem in theories with a low quantum gravity scale. Such theories have been advocated recently as a possible solution to the hierarchy problem and an explanation of the smallness of neutrino masses. Naively one would expect black holes to introduce TeV scale LNV operators, thus generating unacceptably large rates of LNV processes. We show, however, that this does not happen in this scenario due to a complicated compensation mechanism between contributions of different Majorana neutrino states to these processes. Nuclear suppression of J/Psi: from RHIC to the LHC

A parameter-free calculation for J/Psi suppression in pA collisions, based on the dipole description, is confronted with the new data from the PHENIX experiment. Achieving good agreement, we employed this model predicting the contribution of initial state interactions (ISI) to J/Psi suppression in AA collisions. Such a transition from pA to AA is not straightforward, since involves specific effects of double color filtering and boosting of the saturation scale. Relying on this refined ISI contribution, we updated the previous analysis of RHIC data on J/Psi production in Cu-Cu and Au-Au collisions at \sqrt{s}=200 GeV, and determined the transport coefficient of the created dense medium at q_0=0.6 GeV^2/fm. Nuclear effects for J/Psi production at the LHC are predicted using the transport coefficient q_0=0.8 GeV^2/fm, extracted from data on suppression of high-p_T hadrons in central lead-lead collisions at \sqrt{s}=2.76 TeV. Orbital structure of quarks inside the nucleon in the light-cone diquark model

We study the orbital angular momentum structure of the quarks inside the proton. By employing the light-cone diquark model and the overlap representation formalism, we calculate the chiral-even generalized parton distribution functions (GPDs) $H_q(x,ξ,Δ^2)$, $\widetilde{H}_q(x,ξ,Δ^2)$ and $E_q(x,ξ,Δ^2)$ at zero skewedness for $q=u$ and $d$ quarks. In our model $E_u$ and $E_d$ have opposite sign with similar size. Those GPDs are applied to calculate the orbital angular momentum (OAM) distributions, showing that $L_u(x)$ is positive, while $L_d(x)$ is consistent with zero compared with $L_u(x)$. We introduce the impact parameter dependence of the quark OAM distribution. It describes the position space distribution of the quark orbital angular momentum at given $x$. We found that the impact parameter dependence of the quark OAM distribution is axially symmetric in the light-cone diquark model.

Penetrating intrinsic charm: evidence in data

Nuclei are transparent for a heavy intrinsic charm (IC) component of the beam hadrons, what leads to an enhanced nuclear dependence of open charm production at large Feynman x_F. Indeed, such an effect was observed recently in the SELEX experiment. Our calculations reproduce well the data, providing strong support for the presence of IC in hadrons in amount less than 1%. Moreover, we performed an analysis of nuclear effects in J/Psi production and found a similar, although weaker effect

Updating Boer-Mulders functions from unpolarized pd and pp Drell-Yan data

We extract the Boer-Mulders functions for the proton by combining the unpolarized pd and pp Drell-Yan data measured by the E866/NuSea Collaboration by the assumption that the $\cos 2ϕ$ asymmetry is from the Boer-Mulders function. Using the extracted Boer-Mulders functions, we present the predictions for the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetries in future pp experiments at J-PARC and $p \bar{p}$ experiments at PANDA and PAX.

Why heavy and light quarks radiate energy with similar rates

The dead cone effect has been expected to reduce the magnitude of energy loss and jet quenching for heavy flavors produced with large pT in heavy ion collisions. On the contrary, data from RHIC for open charm production demonstrate a flavor independent nuclear suppression. We show that vacuum radiation of a highly virtual quark produced at high pT with its color field stripped off, develops a much wider dead cone, which screens the one related to the quark mass. Lacking the field, gluons cannot be radiated within this cone until the color field is regenerated and the quark virtuality cools down to the scale of the order of the quark mass. However, this takes time longer than is essential for the observed jet quenching. This is the reason why the light and charm quark jets are quenched equally. Open beauty is expected to be suppressed much less within the pT range studied so far.

Glauber - Gribov approach for DIS on nuclei in N=4 SYM

In this paper the Glauber-Gribov approach for deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) with nuclei is developed in N=4 SYM. It is shown that the amplitude displays the same general properties, such as geometrical scaling, as is the case in the high density QCD approach. We found that the quantum effects leading to the graviton reggeization, give rise to an imaginary part of the nucleon amplitude, which makes the DIS in N=4 SYM almost identical to the one expected in high density QCD. We concluded that the impact parameter dependence of the nucleon amplitude is very essential for N=4 SYM, and the entire kinematic region can be divided into three regions which are discussed in the paper. We revisited the dipole description for DIS and proposed a new renormalized Lagrangian for the shock wave formalism which reproduces the Glauber-Gribov approach in a certain kinematic region. However the saturation momentum turns out to be independent of energy, as it has been discussed by Albacete, Kovchegov and Taliotis. We discuss the physical meaning of such a saturation momentum $Q_s(A)$ and argue that one can consider only $Q>Q_s(A)$ within the shock wave approximation.

Handedness of direct photons

The azimuthal asymmetry of direct photons originating from primary hard scatterings between partons is calculated. This can be accounted for by the inclusion of the color dipole orientation, which is sensitive to the rapid variation of the nuclear profile. To this end we introduce the dipole orientation within the saturation model of Golec-Biernat and Wüsthoff, while preserving all its features at the cross-section level. We show that the direct photon elliptic anisotropy v2 coming from this mechanism changes sign and becomes negative for peripheral collisions, albeit it is quite small for nuclear collisions at the RHIC energy.

Quantum-mechanical description of in-medium fragmentation

We present a quantum-mechanical description of quark-hadron fragmentation in a nuclear environment. It employs the path-integral formulation of quantum mechanics, which takes care of all phases and interferences, and which contains all relevant time scales, like production, coherence, formation, etc. The cross section includes the probability of pre-hadron (colorless dipole) production both inside and outside the medium. Moreover, it also includes inside-outside production, which is a typical quantum-mechanical interference effect (like twin-slit electron propagation). We observe a substantial suppression caused by the medium, even if the pre-hadron is produced outside the medium and no energy loss is involved. This important source of suppression is missed in the usual energy-loss scenario interpreting the effect of jet quenching observed in heavy ion collisions. This may be one of the reasons of a too large gluon density, reported by such analyzes.

Unitarity bound for gluon shadowing

Although at small Bjorken x gluons originated from different nucleons in a nucleus overlap in the longitudinal direction, most of them are still well separated in the transverse plane, therefore cannot fuse. For this reason the gluon density in nuclei cannot drop at small x below a certain bottom bound, which we evaluated in a model independent manner assuming the maximal strength of gluon fusion. We also calculated gluon shadowing in the saturated regime using on the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation, and found the nuclear ratio to be well above the unitarity bound. The recently updated analysis of parton distributions in nuclei \cite{eps08} including RHIC data on high-pT hadron production at forward rapidities, led to astonishingly strong gluon shadowing, which is far beyond the unitarity bound. This indicates a misconception in the interpretation of the nuclear suppression observed at HRIC.

Direct photons and dileptons via color dipoles

Drell-Yan dilepton pair production and inclusive direct photon production can be described within a unified framework in the color dipole approach. The inclusion of non-perturbative primordial transverse momenta and DGLAP evolution is studied. We successfully describe data for dilepton spectra from 800-GeV pp collisions, inclusive direct photon spectra for pp collisions at RHIC energies $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, and for $p\bar{p}$ collisions at Tevatron energies $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV, in a formalism that is free from any extra parameters.

Pion pair production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation

We present an analysis of the process $e^+e^-\to V^*\toππγ$, where $V=γ$ or $V=Z$ boson, in the kinematical region where $\sqrt{s}$, the c.m. energy of the $e^+e^-$ pair, is large but much below the $Z$-pole. The subprocess $V^*\to ππγ$ can be described by the convolution of the hard scattering coefficient $V\to q \bar{q} γ$ and the general distribution amplitude of two pions $q\bar{q}\to ππ$. In the case of neutral pion production, $V=γ$ is the dominant process, which can therefore be used to access the GPAs of the pion, especially their $C$-even parts. The $γZ$ interference term provides an alternative approach to extract the weak mixing angle $\sin θ_W$ through measuring the helicity asymmetry in the process $e^+e^-\to π^0π^0γ$. In the case of charged pion pair production, the Bremsstrahlung process dominates and its interference with $e^+e^-\to γ^ \star \to π^+π^-γ$ can be applied to study the process $γ^ \star \to ππγ$ at the amplitude level.

Time Evolution of Jets and Perturbative Color Neutralization

In-medium production of leading hadrons in hard reactions, carrying the main fraction of the jet momentum, involves two stages: (i) the parton originated from the hard process propagates through the medium radiating gluons due to the initial hard collision, as well as to multiple interactions in the medium; (ii) perturbative color neutralization, e.g. picking up an anti-colored parton produced perturbatively, followed by evolution and attenuation of the (pre)hadron in the medium. The color neutralization (or production) length for leading hadrons is controlled by coherence, energy conservation and Sudakov suppression. The pT-broadening is a sensitive and model independent probe for the production length. The color neutralization time is expected to shrink with rising hard scale. In particular, we found a very fast energy dissipation by a highly virtual parton: half of the jet energy is radiated during the first Fermi. Energy conservation makes the production of leading hadrons at longer times difficult.

Scalar meson mediated nuclear mu-e conversion

We study the nuclear mu-e conversion in the general framework of the effective Lagrangian approach without referring to any specific realization of the physics beyond the standard model (SM) responsible for lepton flavor violation (LFV). We analyze the role of scalar meson exchange between the lepton and nucleon currents and show its relevance for the coherent channel of mu-e conversion. We show that this mechanism introduces modifications in the predicted mu-e conversion rates in comparison with the conventional direct nucleon mechanism, based on the contact type interactions of the nucleon currents with the LFV leptonic current. We derive from the experimental data lower limits on the mass scales of the generic LFV lepton-quark contact terms and demonstrate that they are more stringent than the similar limits existing in the literature.

Ratio of $\barΛ/Λ$ in Semi-inclusive Electroproduction

It is shown that the $\barΛ/Λ$ cross section ratio in semi-inclusive electroproduction of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons in deep inelastic scattering of charged lepton on a nucleon target, can provide useful information on the quark to $Λ$ fragmentation functions. This ratio is calculated explicitly in a quark-diquark model, a pQCD based analysis, and an SU(3) symmetry model, with three different options for the contribution from the unfavored fragmentation functions. The $x$-dependence of this ratio is sensitive to the ratio of unfavored fragmentation functions over favored fragmentation functions, $D_{\bar{u}}^Λ(z)/D_{u}^Λ(z)$, whereas the $z$-dependence is sensitive to the flavor structure of the fragmentation functions, i.e., the ratio $D_u^Λ(z)/D_s^Λ(z)$. Future measurements by the HERMES Collaboration at DESY can discriminate between various cases.

Vector mesons in nuclear mu-e conversion

We study nuclear mu-e conversion in the general framework of an effective Lagrangian approach without referring to any specific realization of the physics beyond the standard model (SM) responsible for lepton flavor violation (LFV). We show that vector meson exchange between lepton and nucleon currents plays an important role in this process. A new issue of this mechanism is the presence of the strange quark vector current contribution induced by the phi meson. This allows us to extract new limits on the LFV lepton-quark effective couplings from the existing experimental data.

Helicity and Transversity Distribution of Nucleon and $Λ$-Hyperon from $Λ$ Fragmentation

It is shown that $Λ$-hyperon fragmentation in charged lepton deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a polarized nucleon target can provide sensitive information concerning the quark helicity and transversity distributions for both nucleon and $Λ$-hyperon at large $x$. Numerical predictions are given for the spin transfers of the produced $Λ$, when the target nucleon is polarized either longitudinally or transversely, and with the nucleon and $Λ$ quark distributions evaluated both in an SU(6) quark-spectator-diquark model and in a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based model. It is also shown that the predicted spin transfers have different behaviors for proton and neutron targets, and this can provide sensitive tests of different predictions for the quark helicity and transversity distributions of the $d$ valence quark of the proton at large $x$.

$Λ$, $\barΛ$ Polarization and Spin Transfer in Lepton Deep-Inelastic Scattering

The flavor and helicity distributions of the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons for both valence and sea quarks are calculated in a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based model. We relate these quark distributions to the fragmentation functions of the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$, and calculate the $z$-dependence of the longitudinal spin transfer to the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ in lepton deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). It is shown that the spin transfer to the $Λ$ is compatible with the first HERMES results at DESY and further tests are suggested. We also make predictions for the $z$-dependence of the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ longitudinal polarizations in neutrino (antineutrino) DIS processes. We investigate the sea contribution to the fragmentation functions, and we test a possible scenario where sea quarks in $Λ$ (or sea antiquarks in $\barΛ$) are negatively polarized, whereas sea antiquarks in the $Λ$ (or sea quarks in $\barΛ$) are positively polarized. The asymmetry of the polarized fragmentation functions of sea quarks and antiquarks to $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ provides a way to understand the different behaviour between the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ spin transfers observed in the recent E665 experiment at FNAL.

CP-violation in high-energy collisions of polarized protons

We study the possibility of a large CP/T-violation in lepton pair production in the collisions of polarized protons at RHIC-BNL. We propose the single transverse spin asymmetry which quantifies the possible CP/T-violating effect in this reaction as a sensitive indicator of physics beyond the standard model(SM). We consider two examples of mechanisms beyond the SM which can generate a non-zero asymmetry of this type. They rely on the R-parity violating interactions of supersymmetric models and on phenomenological tensor interactions. We estimate the prospects for observing this effect in future experiments.

QCD condensate contributions to the effective quark potential in a covariant gauge

We discuss QCD condensate contributions to the gluon propagator both in the fixed-point gauge and in covariant gauges for the external QCD vacuum gluon fields with the conclusion that a covariant gauge is essential to obtain a gauge invariant QCD vacuum energy density difference and to retain the unitarity of the quark scattering amplitude. The gauge-invariant QCD condensate contributions to the effective one-gluon exchange potential are evaluated by using the effective gluon propagator which produces a gauge-independent quark scattering amplitude.

CLASSICAL PHOTOABSORPTION SUM RULES

We use a quantum loop expansion to derive sum rule constraints on polarized photoabsorption cross sections in the Standard Model, generalizing earlier results obtained by Altarelli, Cabibbo, and Maiani. We show that the logarithmic integral of the spin-dependent photoabsorption cross section $\int^\infty_{ν_{th}} {dν\over ν} Δσ_{\rm Born}(ν) $ vanishes for any $2 \to 2$ Standard Model or supersymmetric process $γa \to b c$ in the classical, tree-graph approximation. Here $ν= {p \cdot q}/M$ and $Δσ(ν) = σ_P(ν)- σ_A(ν)$ is the difference between the photoabsorption cross section for parallel and antiparallel photon and target helicities. Tests of the sum rule for the reactions $γe \to W ν$ and $γγ\to W^+ W^-$ can provide new tests of the canonical magnetic and quadrupole couplings of the Standard Model. We also extend the sum rule to certain virtual photon processes.
