Free Resolutions and Generalized Hamming Weights of binary linear codes

In this work, we explore the relationship between free resolution of some monomial ideals and Generalized Hamming Weights (GHWs) of binary codes. More precisely, we look for a structure smaller than the set of codewords of minimal support that provides us some information about the GHWs. We prove that the first and second generalized Hamming weight of a binary linear code can be computed (by means of a graded free resolution) from a set of monomials associated to a binomial ideal related with the code. Moreover, the remaining weights are bounded by the Betti numbers for that set.

Factorizations of the same length in abelian monoids

Let $\mathcal S \subseteq \mathbb Z^m \oplus T$ be a finitely generated and reduced monoid. In this paper we develop a general strategy to study the set of elements in $\mathcal S$ having at least two factorizations of the same length, namely the ideal $\mathcal L_{\mathcal S}$. To this end, we work with a certain (lattice) ideal associated to the monoid $\mathcal S$. Our study can be seen as a new approach generalizing \cite{chapman:2011}, which only studies the case of numerical semigroups. When $\mathcal S$ is a numerical semigroup we give three main results: (1) we compute explicitly a set of generators of the ideal $\mathcal L_{\mathcal S}$ when $\mathcal S$ is minimally generated by an almost arithmetic sequence; (2) we provide an infinite family of numerical semigroups such that $\mathcal L_{\mathcal S}$ is a principal ideal; (3) we classify the computational problem of determining the largest integer not in $\mathcal L_{\mathcal S}$ as an $\mathcal{NP}$-hard problem.

Using Reed-Solomon codes in the $\left( U\mid U+V\right)$ construction and an application to cryptography

In this paper we present a modification of Reed-Solomon codes that beats the Guruwami-Sudan $1-\sqrt{R}$ decoding radius of Reed-Solomon codes at low rates $R$. The idea is to choose Reed-Solomon codes $U$ and $V$ with appropriate rates in a $\left( U\mid U+V\right)$ construction and to decode them with the Koetter-Vardy soft information decoder. We suggest to use a slightly more general version of these codes (but which has the same decoding performances as the $\left( U\mid U+V\right)$-construction) for code-based cryptography, namely to build a McEliece scheme. The point is here that these codes not only perform nearly as well (or even better in the low rate regime) as Reed-Solomon codes, their structure seems to avoid the Sidelnikov-Shestakov attack which broke a previous McEliece proposal based on generalized Reed-Solomon codes.

A characterization of MDS codes that have an error correcting pair

Error-correcting pairs were introduced in 1988 by R. Pellikaan, and were found independently by R. Kötter (1992), as a general algebraic method of decoding linear codes. These pairs exist for several classes of codes. However little or no study has been made for characterizing those codes. This article is an attempt to fill the vacuum left by the literature concerning this subject. Since every linear code is contained in an MDS code of the same minimum distance over some finite field extension we have focused our study on the class of MDS codes. Our main result states that an MDS code of minimum distance $2t+1$ has a $t$-ECP if and only if it is a generalized Reed-Solomon code. A second proof is given using recent results Mirandola and Zémor (2015) on the Schur product of codes.

On the ideal associated to a linear code

This article aims to explore the bridge between the algebraic structure of a linear code and the complete decoding process. To this end, we associate a specific binomial ideal $I_+(\mathcal C)$ to an arbitrary linear code. The binomials involved in the reduced Gröbner basis of such an ideal relative to a degree-compatible ordering induce a uniquely defined test-set for the code, and this allows the description of a Hamming metric decoding procedure. Moreover, the binomials involved in the Graver basis of $I_+(\mathcal C)$ provide a universal test-set which turns out to be a set containing the set of codewords of minimal support of the code.

Cryptanalysis of public-key cryptosystems that use subcodes of algebraic geometry codes

We give a polynomial time attack on the McEliece public key cryptosystem based on subcodes of algebraic geometry (AG) codes. The proposed attack reposes on the distinguishability of such codes from random codes using the Schur product. Wieschebrink treated the genus zero case a few years ago but his approach cannot be extent straightforwardly to other genera. We address this problem by introducing and using a new notion, which we call the t-closure of a code.

Error-correcting pairs for a public-key cryptosystem

Code-based cryptography is an interesting alternative to classic number-theory PKC since it is conjectured to be secure against quantum computer attacks. Many families of codes have been proposed for these cryptosystems, one of the main requirements is having high performance t-bounded decoding algorithms which in the case of having high an error-correcting pair is achieved. In this article the class of codes with a t-ECP is proposed for the McEliece cryptosystem. The hardness of retrieving the t-ECP for a given code is considered. As a first step distinguishers of several subclasses are given.

On the Composition of Secret Sharing Schemes Related to Codes

In this paper we construct a subclass of the composite access structure introduced by Martínez et al. based on schemes realizing the structure given by the set of codewords of minimal support of linear codes. This class enlarges the iterated threshold class studied in the same paper. Furthermore all the schemes on this paper are ideal (in fact they allow a vector space construction) and we arrived to give a partial answer to a conjecture stated in the above paper. Finally, as a corollary we proof that all the monotone access structures based on all the minimal supports of a code can be realized by a vector space construction.
