Entanglement-assisted Quantum Codes from Algebraic Geometry Codes

Quantum error correcting codes play the role of suppressing noise and decoherence in quantum systems by introducing redundancy. Some strategies can be used to improve the parameters of these codes. For example, entanglement can provide a way for quantum error correcting codes to achieve higher rates than the one obtained via the traditional stabilizer formalism. Such codes are called entanglement-assisted quantum (QUENTA) codes. In this paper, we use algebraic geometry codes to construct several families of QUENTA codes via the Euclidean and the Hermitian construction. Two of the families created have maximal entanglement and have quantum Singleton defect equal to zero or one. Comparing the other families with the codes with the respective quantum Gilbert-Varshamov bound, we show that our codes have a rate that surpasses that bound. At the end, asymptotically good towers of linear complementary dual codes are used to obtain asymptotically good families of maximal entanglement QUENTA codes. Furthermore, a simple comparison with the quantum Gilbert-Varshamov bound demonstrates that using our construction it is possible to create an asymptotically family of QUENTA codes that exceeds this bound.

A characterization of MDS codes that have an error correcting pair

Error-correcting pairs were introduced in 1988 by R. Pellikaan, and were found independently by R. Kötter (1992), as a general algebraic method of decoding linear codes. These pairs exist for several classes of codes. However little or no study has been made for characterizing those codes. This article is an attempt to fill the vacuum left by the literature concerning this subject. Since every linear code is contained in an MDS code of the same minimum distance over some finite field extension we have focused our study on the class of MDS codes. Our main result states that an MDS code of minimum distance $2t+1$ has a $t$-ECP if and only if it is a generalized Reed-Solomon code. A second proof is given using recent results Mirandola and Zémor (2015) on the Schur product of codes.

Rank error-correcting pairs

Error-correcting pairs were introduced independently by Pellikaan and Kötter as a general method of decoding linear codes with respect to the Hamming metric using coordinatewise products of vectors, and are used for many well-known families of codes. In this paper, we define new types of vector products, extending the coordinatewise product, some of which preserve symbolic products of linearized polynomials after evaluation and some of which coincide with usual products of matrices. Then we define rank error-correcting pairs for codes that are linear over the extension field and for codes that are linear over the base field, and relate both types. Bounds on the minimum rank distance of codes and MRD conditions are given. Finally we show that some well-known families of rank-metric codes admit rank error-correcting pairs, and show that the given algorithm generalizes the classical algorithm using error-correcting pairs for the Hamming metric.

Cryptanalysis of public-key cryptosystems that use subcodes of algebraic geometry codes

We give a polynomial time attack on the McEliece public key cryptosystem based on subcodes of algebraic geometry (AG) codes. The proposed attack reposes on the distinguishability of such codes from random codes using the Schur product. Wieschebrink treated the genus zero case a few years ago but his approach cannot be extent straightforwardly to other genera. We address this problem by introducing and using a new notion, which we call the t-closure of a code.

Error-correcting pairs for a public-key cryptosystem

Code-based cryptography is an interesting alternative to classic number-theory PKC since it is conjectured to be secure against quantum computer attacks. Many families of codes have been proposed for these cryptosystems, one of the main requirements is having high performance t-bounded decoding algorithms which in the case of having high an error-correcting pair is achieved. In this article the class of codes with a t-ECP is proposed for the McEliece cryptosystem. The hardness of retrieving the t-ECP for a given code is considered. As a first step distinguishers of several subclasses are given.
