Curvature of the total space of a Griffiths negative vector bundle and quasi-Fuchsian space

For a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ over a Hermitian manifold $M$ there are two important notions of curvature positivity, the Griffiths positivity and Nakano positivity. We study the consequence of these positivities and the relevant estimates. If $E$ is Griffiths negative over Kähler manifold, then there is a Kähler metric on its total space $E$, and we calculate the curvature and prove the non-positivity of the curvature along the tautological direction. The Nakano positivity can be formulated as a positivity for the Nakano curvature operator and we give estimate the Nakano curvature operator associated with a Nakano positive direct image bundle. As applications we construct a mapping class group invariant Kähler metric on the quasi-Fuchsian space QF$(S)$, which extends the Weil-Petersson metric on the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}(S)\subset {\rm QF}(S)$, and we obtain estimates for the Nakano curvature operator for the dual Weil-Petersson metric on the holomorphic cotangent bundle of Teichmüller space.

Signature, Toledo invariant and surface group representations in the real symplectic group

In this paper, by using Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem, we obtain a formula for the signature of a flat symplectic vector bundle over a surface with boundary, which is related to the Toledo invariant of a surface group representation in the real symplectic group and the Rho invariant on the boundary. As an application, we obtain a Milnor-Wood type inequality for the signature. In particular, we give a new proof of the Milnor-Wood inequality for the Toledo invariant in the case of closed surfaces and obtain some modified inequalities for the surface with boundary.

Harmonic maps between surfaces homotopic to a (branched) covering map

In the paper, we consider the harmonic maps between surfaces $Σ$ and $S$ in the homotopy class of a (branched) covering map $u_0$. We prove the uniqueness of critical points of energy function and the injectivity of Hopf differential if $u_0$ is a covering map. On the other hand, if $u_0$ is a branched covering, we show that the uniqueness of critical points fails if $u_0$ is a non-simple branched covering, and prove the injectivity of Hopf differential $Φ:\mc{T}(S)\to \op{QD}(Σ,g)$ when $g=[u_0^* h]$ for some hyperbolic metric $h$ on $S$.

Primitive stable representations in higher rank semisimple Lie groups

We study primitive stable representations of free groups into higher rank semisimple Lie groups and their properties. Let $Σ$ be a compact, connected, orientable surface (possibly with boundary) of negative Euler characteristic. We first verify the $σ_{mod}$-regularity for convex projective structures and positive representations. Then we show that the holonomies of convex projective structures and positive representations on $Σ$ are all primitive stable if $Σ$ has one boundary component.

Deformation space of discrete groups of SU(2,1) in quaternionic hyperbolic plane

In this note, we study deformations of discrete and Zariski dense subgroups of SU(2, 1) in quaternionic hyperbolic space. Specifi- cally we consider two examples coming from representations of 3-manifold groups (the figure eight knot and Whitehead links complement) and show opposite behavior: one is not deformable outside U(2,1), while the other has a big space of deformations in Sp(2, 1).

Eichler-Shimura isomorphism for complex hyperbolic lattices

We consider the cohomology group $H^1(Γ, ρ)$ of a discrete subgroup $Γ\subset G=SU(n, 1)$ and the symmetric tensor representation $ρ$ on $S^m(\mathbb C^{n+1})$. We give an elementary proof of the Eichler-Shimura isomorphism that harmonic forms $H^1(Γ\backslash G/K, ρ)$ are $(0, 1)$-forms for the automorphic holomorphic bundle induced by the representation $S^m(\mathbb C^{n})$ of $K$.

Simplicial volume, Barycenter method, and Bounded cohomology

We show that codimension one dimensional Jacobian of the barycentric straightening map is uniformly bounded for most of the higher rank symmetric spaces. As a consequence, we prove that the locally finite simplicial volume of most $\mathbb Q$-rank $1$ locally symmetric spaces is positive, which has been open for many years. Finally we improve the degree theorem for $\mathbb Q$-rank $1$ locally symmetric spaces of Connell and Farb. We also address the issue of surjectivity of the comparison map in real rank $2$ case.

Convex real projective structures and Hilbert metrics

We review some basic concepts related to convex real projective structures from the differential geometry point of view. We start by recalling a Riemannian metric which originates in the study of affine spheres using the Blaschke connection (work of Calabi and of Cheng-Yau) mentioning its relation with the Hilbert metric. We then survey some of the deformation theory of convex real projective structures on surfaces. We describe in particular how the set of (Hilbert) lengths of simple closed curves is used in a parametrization of the deformation space in analogy with the classical Fenchel-Nielsen parameters of Teichmüller space (work of Goldman). We then mention parameters of this deformation space that arise in the work of Hitchin on the character variety of representations of the fundamental group of the surface in $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$. In this character variety, the component of the character variety that corresponds to projective structures is identified with the vector space of pairs of holomorphic quadratic and cubic differentials over a fixed Riemann surface. Labourie and Loftin (independently) obtained parameter spaces that use the cubic differentials and affine spheres. We then display some similarities and differences between Hilbert geometry and hyperbolic geometry using geodesic currents and topological entropy. Finally, we discuss geodesic flows associated to Hilbert metrics and compactifications of spaces of convex real projective structures on surfaces. This makes another analogy with works done on the Teichmüller space of the surface.

Betti numbers of Gaussian fields

We present the relation between the genus in cosmology and the Betti numbers for excursion sets of three- and two-dimensional smooth Gaussian random fields, and numerically investigate the Betti numbers as a function of threshold level. Betti numbers are topological invariants of figures that can be used to distinguish topological spaces. In the case of the excursion sets of a three-dimensional field there are three possibly non-zero Betti numbers; $β_0$ is the number of connected regions, $β_1$ is the number of circular holes, and $β_2$ is the number of three-dimensional voids. Their sum with alternating signs is the genus of the surface of excursion regions. It is found that each Betti number has a dominant contribution to the genus in a specific threshold range. $β_0$ dominates the high-threshold part of the genus curve measuring the abundance of high density regions (clusters). $β_1$ dominates the genus near the median thresholds which measures the topology of negatively curved iso-density surfaces, and $β_2$ corresponds to the low-threshold part measuring the void abundance. We average the Betti number curves (the Betti numbers as a function of the threshold level) over many realizations of Gaussian fields and find that both the amplitude and shape of the Betti number curves depend on the slope of the power spectrum $n$ in such a way that their shape becomes broader and their amplitude drops less steeply than the genus as $n$ decreases. This behaviour contrasts with the fact that the shape of the genus curve is fixed for all Gaussian fields regardless of the power spectrum. Even though the Gaussian Betti number curves should be calculated for each given power spectrum, we propose to use the Betti numbers for better specification of the topology of large scale structures in the universe.

On deformation spaces of nonuniform hyperbolic lattices

Let $Γ$ be a nonuniform lattice acting on real hyperbolic n-space. We show that in dimension greater than or equal to 4, the volume of a representation is constant on each connected component of the representation variety of $Γ$ in SO(n,1). Furthermore, in dimensions 2 and 3, there is a semialgebraic subset of the representation variety such that the volume of a representation is constant on connected components of the semialgebraic subset. Our approach gives a new proof of the local rigidity theorem for nonuniform hyperbolic lattices and the analogue of Soma's theorem, which shows that the number of orientable hyperbolic manifolds dominated by a closed, connected, orientable 3-manifold is finite, for noncompact 3-manifolds.

Separable-stable representations of a compression body

Let M be a hyperbolizable, nontrivial compression body without toroidal boundary components. In this paper, we characterize which discrete and faithful representations of the fundamental group of M into PSL(2,C) are separable-stable. The set of separable-stable representations forms a domain of discontinuity for the action of the outer automorphism group of the fundamental group of M on the PSL(2,C)-character variety of M.

Proportionality principle for the simplicial volume of families of Q-rank 1 locally symmetric spaces

We establish the proportionality principle between the Riemannian volume and locally finite simplicial volume for Q-rank 1 locally symmetric spaces covered by products of hyperbolic spaces, giving the first examples for manifolds whose cusp groups are not necessarily amenable. Also, we give a simple direct proof of the proportionality principle for the locally finite simplicial volume and the relative simplicial volume of Q-rank 1 locally symmetric spaces with amenable cusp groups established by Löh and Sauer.

Volume invariant and maximal representations of discrete subgroups of Lie groups

Let $Γ$ be a lattice in a connected semisimple Lie group $G$ with trivial center and no compact factors. We introduce a volume invariant for representations of $Γ$ into $G$, which generalizes the volume invariant for representations of uniform lattices introduced by Goldman. Then, we show that the maximality of this volume invariant exactly characterizes discrete, faithful representations of $Γ$ into $G$ except for $Γ\subset \mathrm{PSL_2 \mathbb{C}}$ a nonuniform lattice.

Bounded cohomology and negatively curved manifolds

We study the bounded fundamental class in the top dimensional bounded cohomology of negatively curved manifolds with infinite volume. We prove that the bounded fundamental class of $M$ vanishes if $M$ is geometrically finite. Furthermore, when $M$ is a $\mathbb{R}$-rank one locally symmetric space, we show that the bounded fundamental class of $M$ vanishes if and only if the Riemannian volume form on $M$ is the differential of a bounded differential form on $M$.

Convergence of freely decomposable Kleinian groups

We consider a compact orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with a compressible boundary. Suppose that we are given a sequence of geometrically finite hyperbolic metrics whose conformal boundary structures at infinity diverge to a projective lamination. We prove that if this limit projective lamination is doubly incompressible, then the sequence has compact closure in the deformation space. As a consequence we generalise Thurston's double limit theorem and solve his conjecture on convergence of function groups affirmatively.

Flexibility of surface groups in classical groups

We show that a surface group of high genus contained in a classical simple Lie group can be deformed to become Zariski dense, unless the Lie group is $SU(p,q)$ (resp. $SO^* (2n)$, $n$ odd) and the surface group is maximal in some $S(U(p,p)\times U(q-p))\subset SU(p,q)$ (resp. $SO^* (2n-2)\times SO(2)\subset SO^* (2n)$). This is a converse, for classical groups, to a rigidity result of S. Bradlow, O. Garc\'ıa-Prada and P. Gothen.
