On the continuity of geodesically convex functions on Riemannian manifolds

In this short note, we prove that all geodesically convex functions defined on a Riemannian manifold are continuous in the interior of their domain. This is a folklore result, but to the best of our knowledge, there is only one available proof, which is largely cited. However, it contains a significant gap, which we fill here. We also discuss extensions of this result beyond the Riemannian setting.

Signature, Toledo invariant and surface group representations in the real symplectic group

In this paper, by using Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem, we obtain a formula for the signature of a flat symplectic vector bundle over a surface with boundary, which is related to the Toledo invariant of a surface group representation in the real symplectic group and the Rho invariant on the boundary. As an application, we obtain a Milnor-Wood type inequality for the signature. In particular, we give a new proof of the Milnor-Wood inequality for the Toledo invariant in the case of closed surfaces and obtain some modified inequalities for the surface with boundary.

Cohomology of annuli, duality and $L^\infty$-differential forms on Heisenberg groups

In the last few years the authors proved Poincaré and Sobolev type inequalities in Heisenberg groups $\mathbb{H}^n$ for differential forms in the Rumin's complex. The need to substitute the usual de Rham complex of differential forms for Euclidean spaces with the Rumin's complex is due to the different stratification of the Lie algebra of Heisenberg groups. The crucial feature of Rumin's complex is that $d_c$ is a differential operator of order 1 or 2 according to the degree of the form. Roughly speaking, Poincaré and Sobolev type inequalities are quantitative formulations of the well known topological problem whether a closed form is exact. More precisely, for suitable $p$ and $q$, we mean that every exact differential form $ω$ in $L^p$ admits a primitive $ϕ$ in $L^q$ such that$\|ϕ\|_{L^{q}}\leq C\ \|ω\|_{L^{p}}$. The cases of the norm $L^p$, $p\ge 1$ and $q<\infty$ have been already studied in a series of papers by the authors. In the present paper we deal with the limiting case where $q=\infty$: it is remarkable that, unlike in the scalar case, when the degree of the forms $ω$ is at least $2$, we can take $q=\infty$ in the left-hand side of the inequality. The corresponding inequality in the Euclidean setting $\mathbb{R}^N$ ($p=N$ and $q=\infty$) was proven by Bourgain and Brezis.

Submanifolds and differential forms on Carnot manifolds, after M. Gromov and M. Rumin

The purpose of these notes is to explain parts of Gromov's survey of Carnot-Carathedory spaces, in the light of subsequent results of M. Rumin. Among the rich material provided by Gromov, most of which pertains to analysis on metric spaces, we choose to concentrate on the H{ö}lder equivalence problem for Carnot manifolds. The notes go to some extent into the PDE technique used by Gromov in order to construct horizontal submanifolds. Rumin's complex is explained too. The upshot is that both methods yield more or less the same conclusions as far as the H{ö}lder equivalence problem is concerned.

Gagliardo-Nirenberg Inequalities for Differential Forms in Heisenberg Groups

The L 1-Sobolev inequality states that the L n/(n--1)-norm of a compactly supported function on Euclidean n-space is controlled by the L 1-norm of its gradient. The generalization to differential forms (due to Lanzani & Stein and Bourgain & Brezis) is recent, and states that a the L n/(n--1)-norm of a compactly supported differential h-form is controlled by the L 1-norm of its exterior differential du and its exterior codifferential $δ$u (in special cases the L 1-norm must be replaced by the H 1-Hardy norm). We shall extend this result to Heisenberg groups in the framework of an appropriate complex of differential forms.

Sard Property for the endpoint map on some Carnot groups

In Carnot-Caratheodory or sub-Riemannian geometry, one of the major open problems is whether the conclusions of Sard's theorem holds for the endpoint map, a canonical map from an infinite-dimensional path space to the underlying finite-dimensional manifold. The set of critical values for the endpoint map is also known as abnormal set, being the set of endpoints of abnormal extremals leaving the base point. We prove that a strong version of Sard's property holds for all step-2 Carnot groups and several other classes of Lie groups endowed with left-invariant distributions. Namely, we prove that the abnormal set lies in a proper analytic subvariety. In doing so we examine several characterizations of the abnormal set in the case of Lie groups.

Flexibility of surface groups in classical groups

We show that a surface group of high genus contained in a classical simple Lie group can be deformed to become Zariski dense, unless the Lie group is $SU(p,q)$ (resp. $SO^* (2n)$, $n$ odd) and the surface group is maximal in some $S(U(p,p)\times U(q-p))\subset SU(p,q)$ (resp. $SO^* (2n-2)\times SO(2)\subset SO^* (2n)$). This is a converse, for classical groups, to a rigidity result of S. Bradlow, O. Garc\'ıa-Prada and P. Gothen.

Pincement du plan hyperbolique complexe

$L^p$-cohomology of rank one symmetric spaces of noncompact type is shown to be Hausdorff for values of $p$ where this does not follow from curvature pinching. Using the multiplicative structure on $L^p$-cohomology, it is shown that no simply connected Riemannian manifold with strictly -1/4-pinched sectional curvature can be quasiisometric to complex hyperbolic plane. Unfortunately, the method does not extend to other rank one symmetric spaces.
