Remark on an elastic plate interacting with a gas in a semi-infinite tube: periodic solutions

We consider a conservative system consisting of an elastic plate interacting with a gas filling a semi-infinite tube. The plate is placed on the bottom of the tube. The dynamics of the gas velocity potential is governed by the linear wave equation. The plate displacement satisfies the linear Kirchhoff equation. We show that this system possesses an infinite number of periodic solutions with the frequencies tending to infinity. This means that the well-known property of decaying of local wave energy in tube domains does not hold for the system considered.

Synchronization in coupled second order in time infinite-dimensional models

We study asymptotic synchronization at the level of global attractors in a class of coupled second order in time models which arises in dissipative wave and elastic structure dynamics. Under some conditions we prove that this synchronization arises in the infinite coupling intensity limit and show that for identical subsystems this phenomenon appears for finite intensities. Our argument involves a method based on "compensated" compactness and quasi-stability estimates. As an application we consider the nonlinear Kirchhoff, Karman and Berger plate models with different types of boundary conditions. Our results can be also applied to the nonlinear wave equations in an arbitrary dimension. We consider synchronization in sine-Gordon type models which describes distributed Josephson junctions.

Von Karman plate in a gas flow: recent results and conjectures

We give a survey of recent results on flow-structure interactions modeled by a modified wave equation coupled at an interface with equations of nonlinear elasticity. Both subsonic and supersonic flow velocities are considered. The focus of the discussion here is on the interesting mathematical aspects of physical phenomena occurring in aeroelasticity, such as flutter and divergence. This leads to a partial differential equation (PDE) treatment of issues such as well-posedness of finite energy solutions, and long-time (asymptotic) behavior. The latter includes theory of asymptotic stability, convergence to equilibria, and to global attracting sets. We complete the discussion with several well known observations and conjectures based on experimental/numerical studies.

Finite-dimensional global attractors for parabolic nonlinear equations with state-dependent delay

We deal with a class of parabolic nonlinear evolution equations with state-dependent delay. This class covers several important PDE models arising in biology. We first prove well-posedness in a certain space of functions which are Lipschitz in time. We show that the model considered generates an evolution operator semigroup $S_t$ on a space $CL$ of Lipschitz type functions over delay time interval. The operators $S_t$ are closed for all $t\ge 0$ and continuous for $t$ large enough. Our main result shows that the semigroup $S_t$ possesses compact global and exponential attractors of finite fractal dimension. Our argument is based on the recently developed method of quasi-stability estimates and involves some extension of the theory of global attractors for the case of closed evolutions.

A squeezing property and its applications to a description of long time behaviour in the 3D viscous primitive equations

We consider the 3D viscous primitive equations with periodic boundary conditions. These equations arise in the study of ocean dynamics and generate a dynamical system in a Sobolev H^1 type space. Our main result establishes the so-called squeezing property in the Ladyzhenskaya form for this system. As a consequence of this property we prove (i) the finiteness of the fractal dimension of the corresponding global attractor, (ii) the existence of finite number of determining modes, and (iii) ergodicity of a related random kick model. All these results provide a new information concerning long time dynamics of oceanic motions.

Discrete data assimilation via Ladyzhenskaya squeezing property in the 3D viscous primitive equations

We discuss the discrete data assimilation problem for the 3D viscous primitive equations arising in the modeling of large scale phenomena in oceanic dynamics. Our main result states possibility of asymptotically reliable prognosis based on a discrete sequence of finite number of scalar observations. Our method is quite general and can be applied to a wide class of dissipative systems.

Dynamics of second order in time evolution equations with state-dependent delay

We deal with a class of second order in time nonlinear evolution equations with state-dependent delay. This class covers several important PDE models arising in the theory ofnonlinear plates. Our first result states well-posedness in a certain space of functions which are C1 in time. In contrast with the first order models with discrete state-dependent delay this result does not require any compatibility conditions. The solutions constructed generate a dynamical system in a C1-type space over delay time interval. Our next result shows that this dynamical system possesses compact global and exponential attractors of finite fractal dimension. To obtain this result we adapt the recently developed method of quasi-stability estimates.

Flow-plate interactions: Well-posedness and long-time behavior

We consider flow-structure interactions modeled by a modified wave equation coupled at an interface with equations of nonlinear elasticity. Both subsonic and supersonic flow velocities are treated with Neumann type flow conditions, and a novel treatment of the so called Kutta-Joukowsky flow conditions are given in the subsonic case. The goal of the paper is threefold: (i) to provide an accurate review of recent results on existence, uniqueness, and stability of weak solutions, (ii) to present a construction of finite dimensional, attracting sets corresponding to the structural dynamics and discuss convergence of trajectories, and (iii) to state several open questions associated with the topic. This second task is based on a decoupling technique which reduces the analysis of the full flow-structure system to a PDE system with delay.

Attractors for Delayed, Non-Rotational von Karman Plates with Applications to Flow-Structure Interactions Without any Damping

This paper is devoted to a long time behavior analysis associated with flow structure interactions at subsonic and supersonic velocities. It turns out that an ntrinsic component of that analysis is the study of attracting sets corresponding to von Karman plate equations with {\it delayed terms} and {\it without rotational} terms. The presence of delay terms in the dynamical system leads to the loss of gradient structure while the absence of rotational terms in von Karman plates leads to the loss of compactness of the orbits. Both these features make the analysis of long time behavior rather subtle rendering the established tools in the theory of PDE dynamical systems not applicable. It is our goal to develop methodology that is capable of handling this class of problems.

Evolution Semigroups in Supersonic Flow-Plate Interactions

We consider the well-posedness of a model for a flow-structure interaction. This model describes the dynamics of an elastic flexible plate with clamped boundary conditions immersed in a supersonic flow. A perturbed wave equation describes the flow potential. The plate's out-of-plane displacement can be modeled by various nonlinear plate equations (including von Karman and Berger). We show that the linearized model is well-posed on the state space (as given by finite energy considerations) and generates a strongly continuous semigroup. We make use of these results to conclude global-in-time well-posedness for the fully nonlinear model. The proof of generation has two novel features, namely: (1) we introduce a new flow potential velocity-type variable which makes it possible to cover both subsonic and supersonic cases, and to split the dynamics generating operator into a skew-adjoint component and a perturbation acting outside of the state space. Performing semigroup analysis also requires a nontrivial approximation of the domain of the generator. And (2) we make critical use of hidden regularity for the flow component of the model (in the abstract setup for the semigroup problem) which allows us run a fixed point argument and eventually conclude well-posedness. This well-posedness result for supersonic flows (in the absence of rotational inertia) has been hereto open. The use of semigroup methods to obtain well-posedness opens this model to long-time behavior considerations.

Invariance and Monotonicity for Stochastic Delay Differential Equations

We study invariance and monotonicity properties of Kunita-type stochastic differential equations in $\RR^d$ with delay. Our first result provides sufficient conditions for the invariance of closed subsets of $\RR^d$. Then we present a comparison principle and show that under appropriate conditions the stochastic delay system considered generates a monotone (order-preserving) random dynamical system. Several applications are considered.

On interaction of an elastic wall with a Poiseuille type flow

We study dynamics of a coupled system consisting of the 3D Navier--Stokes equations which is linearized near a certain Poiseuille type flow in an (unbounded) domain and a classical (possibly nonlinear) elastic plate equation for transversal displacement on a flexible flat part of the boundary. We first show that this problem generates an evolution semigroup $S_t$ on an appropriate phase space. Then under some conditions concerning the underlying (Poiseuille type) flow we prove the existence of a compact finite-dimensional global attractor for this semigroup and also show that $S_t $ is an exponentially stable $C_0$-semigroup of linear operators in the fully linear case. Since we do not assume any kind of mechanical damping in the plate component, this means that dissipation of the energy in the fluid flow due to viscosity is sufficient to stabilize the system.

Well-posedness and long time behavior in nonlinear dissipative hyperbolic-like evolutions with critical exponents

These lectures present the analysis of stability and control of long time behavior of PDE models described by nonlinear evolutions of hyperbolic type. Specific examples of the models under consideration include: (i) nonlinear systems of dynamic elasticity: von Karman systems, Berger's equations, Kirchhoff - Boussinesq equations, nonlinear waves (ii) nonlinear flow - structure and fluid - structure interactions, (iii) and nonlinear thermo-elasticity. A characteristic feature of the models under consideration is criticality or super-criticality of sources (with respect to Sobolev's embeddings) along with super-criticality of damping mechanisms which, in addition, may be also geometrically constrained. Our aim is to present several methods relying on cancelations, harmonic analysis and geometric analysis, which enable to handle criticality and also super-criticality in both sources and the damping of the underlined nonlinear PDE. It turns out that if carefully analyzed the nonlinearity can be taken "advantage of" in order to produce implementable damping mechanism. Another goal of these lectures is the understanding of control mechanisms which are geometrically constrained. The final task boils down to showing that appropriately damped system is "quasi-stable" in the sense that any two trajectories approach each other exponentially fast up to a compact term which can grow in time. Showing this property- formulated as quasi-stability estimate -is the key and technically demanding issue that requires suitable tools. These include: weighted energy inequalities, compensated compactness, Carleman's estimates and some elements of microlocal analysis.

A global attractor for a fluid--plate interaction model

We study asymptotic dynamics of a coupled system consisting of linearized 3D Navier--Stokes equations in a bounded domain and a classical (nonlinear) elastic plate equation for transversal displacement on a flexible flat part of the boundary. We show that this problem generates a semiflow on appropriate phase space. Our main result states the existence of a compact finite-dimensional global attractor for this semiflow. We do not assume any kind of mechanical damping in the plate component. Thus our results means that dissipation of the energy in the fluid due to viscosity is sufficient to stabilize the system. To achieve the result we first study the corresponding linearized model and show that this linear model generates strongly continuous exponentially stable semigroup.

Long-time dynamics of Kirchhoff wave models with strong nonlinear damping

We study well-posedness and long-time dynamics of a class of quasilinear wave equations with a strong damping. We accept the Kirchhoff hypotheses and assume that the stiffness and damping coefficients are $C^1$ functions of the $L_2$-norm of the gradient of the displacement. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and study their properties for a rather wide class of nonlinearities which covers the case of possible degeneration (or even negativity) of the stiffness coefficient and the case of a supercritical source term. Our main results deal with global attractors. In the case of strictly positive stiffness factors we prove that in the natural energy space endowed with a partially strong topology there exists a global attractor whose fractal dimension is finite. In the non-supercritical case the partially strong topology becomes strong and a finite dimensional attractor exists in the strong topology of the energy space. Moreover, in this case we also establish the existence of a fractal exponential attractor and give conditions that guarantee the existence of a finite number of determining functionals. Our arguments involve a recently developed method based on "compensated" compactness and quasi-stability estimates.

Quantum Zakharov Model in a Bounded Domain

We consider an initial boundary value problem for a quantum version of the Zakharov system arising in plasma physics. We prove the global well-posedness of this problem in some Sobolev type classes and study properties of solutions. This result confirms the conclusion recently made in physical literature concerning the absence of collapse in the quantum Langmuir waves. In the dissipative case the existence of a finite dimensional global attractor is established and regularity properties of this attractor are studied. For this we use the recently developed method of quasi-stability estimates. In the case when external loads are $C^\infty$ functions we show that every trajectory from the attractor is $C^\infty$ both in time and spatial variables. This can be interpret as the absence of sharp coherent structures in the limiting dynamics.

Unsteady interaction of a viscous fluid with an elastic shell modeled by full von Karman equations

We study well-posedness and asymptotic dynamics of a coupled system consisting of linearized 3D Navier--Stokes equations in a bounded domain and a classical (nonlinear) full von Karman shallow shell equations that accounts for both transversal and lateral displacements on a flexible part of the boundary. We also take into account rotational inertia of filaments of the shell. Out main result shows that the problem generates a semiflow in an appropriate phase space. The regularity provided by viscous dissipation in the fluid allows us to consider simultaneously both cases of presence inertia in the lateral displacements and its absence. Our second result states the existence of a compact global attractor for this semiflow in the case of presence of (rotational) damping in the transversal component and a particular structure of external forces.

A global attractor for a fluid--plate interaction model accounting only for longitudinal deformations of the plate

We study asymptotic dynamics of a coupled system consisting of linearized 3D Navier--Stokes equations in a bounded domain and the classical (nonlinear) elastic plate equation for in-plane motions on a flexible flat part of the boundary. The main peculiarity of the model is the assumption that the transversal displacements of the plate are negligible relative to in-plane displacements. This kind of models arises in the study of blood flows in large arteries. Our main result states the existence of a compact global attractor of finite dimension. We also show that the corresponding linearized system generates exponentially stable $C_0$-semigroup. We do not assume any kind of mechanical damping in the plate component. Thus our results means that dissipation of the energy in the fluid due to viscosity is sufficient to stabilize the system.

Long-time dynamics in plate models with strong nonlinear damping

We study long-time dynamics of a class of abstract second order in time evolution equations in a Hilbert space with the damping term depending both on displacement and velocity. This damping represents the nonlinear strong dissipation phenomenon perturbed with relatively compact terms. Our main result states the existence of a compact finite dimensional attractor. We study properties of this attractor. We also establish the existence of a fractal exponential attractor and give the conditions that guarantee the existence of a finite number of determining functionals. In the case when the set of equilibria is finite and hyperbolic we show that every trajectory is attracted by some equilibrium with exponential rate. Our arguments involve a recently developed method based on the "compensated" compactness and quasi-stability estimates. As an application we consider the nonlinear Kirchhoff, Karman and Berger plate models with different types of boundary conditions and strong damping terms. Our results can be also applied to the nonlinear wave equations.

Stochastic 2D hydrodynamical systems: Wong-Zakai approximation and Support theorem

We deal with a class of abstract nonlinear stochastic models with multiplicative noise, which covers many 2D hydrodynamical models including the 2D Navier-Stokes equations, 2D MHD models and 2D magnetic Bénard problems as well as some shell models of turbulence. Our main result describes the support of the distribution of solutions. Both inclusions are proved by means of a general Wong-Zakai type result of convergence in probability for non linear stochastic PDEs driven by a Hilbert-valued Brownian motion and some adapted finite dimensional approximation of this process.

Stochastic 2D hydrodynamical type systems: Well posedness and large deviations

We deal with a class of abstract nonlinear stochastic models, which covers many 2D hydrodynamical models including 2D Navier-Stokes equations, 2D MHD models and 2D magnetic Bénard problem and also some shell models of turbulence. We first prove the existence and uniqueness theorem for the class considered. Our main result is a Wentzell-Freidlin type large deviation principle for small multiplicative noise which we prove by weak convergence method.

Determining functionals for random partial differential equations

Determining functionals are tools to describe the finite dimensional long-term dynamics of infinite dimensional dynamical systems. There also exist several applications to infinite dimensional {\em random} dynamical systems. In these applications the convergence condition of the trajectories of an infinite dimensional random dynamical system with respect to a finite set of linear functionals is assumed to be either in mean or {\em exponential} with respect to the convergence almost surely. In contrast to these ideas we introduce a convergence concept which is based on the convergence in probability. By this ansatz we get rid of the assumption of exponential convergence. In addition, setting the random terms to zero we obtain usual deterministic results.\\ We apply our results to the 2D Navier - Stokes equations forced by a white noise.

Probabilistic Dynamics of Two-Layer Geophysical Flows

The two-layer quasigeostrophic flow model is an intermidiate system between the single-layer 2D barotropic flow model and the continuously stratified, 3D baroclinic flow model. This model is widely used to investigate basic mechanisms in geophysical flows, such as baroclinic effects, the Gulf Stream and subtropical gyres. The wind forcing acts only on the top layer. We consider the two-layer quasigeostrophic model under stochastic wind forcing. We first transformed this system into a coupled system of random partial differential equations and then show that the asymptotic probabilistic dynamics of this system depends only on the top fluid layer. Namely, in the probability sense and asymptotically, the dynamics of the two-layer quasigeostrophic fluid system is determinied by the top fluid layer, or, the bottom fluid layer is slaved by the top fluid layer. This conclusion is true provided that the Wiener process and the fluid parameters satisfy a certain condition. In particular, this latter condition is satisfied when the trace of the covariance operator of the Wiener process is controled by a certain upper bound, and the Ekman constant $r$ is sufficiently large. Note that the generalized time derivative of the Wiener process models the fluctuating part of the wind stress forcing on the top fluid layer, and the Ekman constant $r$ measures the rate for vorticity decay due to the friction in the bottom Ekman layer.
