Room Temperature Thermoelectric Properties of Isostructural Selenides Ta2PdS6 and Ta2PdSe6

We have measured thermoelectric properties of Ta2PdX6 (X=S, Se) around room temperature using single crystal samples. We find that the power factor of Ta2PdX6 is relatively high from middle-low to room temperatures, and notably Ta2PdSe6 shows the largest power factor among thermoelectric materials with an electrical conductivity of 10-2 Ωcm at 300 K. Ta2PdS6 will be a possible candidate for a Peltier cooling material if the lattice thermal conductivity is reduced by chemical substitution.

Ferromagnetic Cluster Glass Phase Embedded in a Paramagnetic and Metallic Host in Non-uniform Magnetic System CaRu_{1-x}Sc_{x}O_{3}

We have investigated both static and dynamic magnetic properties of polycrystalline CaRu1−x_{1-x}Scx_{x}O3_{3} system in order to clarify the role of Sc ions as a disorder for magnetic ordering. We have observed typical features of a ferromagnetic cluster glass state below around 40 K: (i) a broad, frequency-dependent peak in the ac magnetic susceptibility, (ii) a slow relaxation of the magnetization, and (iii) a continuous increase in the dc magnetic susceptibility in field cooling process. The composition dependence of characteristic parameters for the cluster glass state suggests that chemical segregation can hardly explain the clustering mechanism. We propose a possible picture that the ferromagnetic clusters are distributed uniformly and form the glassy state embedded in the paramagnetic and metallic host of CaRuO3_{3}.

Intrinsic Enhancement of Dielectric Permittivity in (Nb + In) co-doped TiO2 single crystals

The development of dielectric materials with colossal permittivity is important for the miniaturization of electronic devices and fabrication of high-density energy-storage devices. The electron-pinned defect-dipoles has been recently proposed to boost the permittivity of (Nb + In) co-doped TiO2 to 105. However, the follow-up studies suggest an extrinsic contribution to the colossal permittivity from thermally excited carriers. Herein, we demonstrate a marked enhancement in the permittivity of (Nb + In) co-doped TiO2 single crystals at sufficiently low temperatures such that the thermally excited carriers are frozen out and exert no influence on the dielectric response. The results indicate that the permittivity attains quadruple of that for pure TiO2. This finding suggests that the electron-pinned defect-dipoles add an extra dielectric response to that of the TiO2 host matrix. The results offer a novel approach for the development of functional dielectric materials with large permittivity by engineering complex defects into bulk materials.

Novel Charge Ordering in the Trimer Iridium Oxide BaIrO3

We have prepared polycrystalline samples of the trimer Ir oxide BaIrO3 with face-shared Ir3O12 trimers, and have investigated the origin of the phase transition at 182 K by measuring resistivity, thermopower, magnetization and synchrotron x-ray diffraction. We propose a possible electronic model and transition mechanism, starting from a localized electron picture on the basis of the Rietveld refinement. Within this model, BaIrO3 can be basically regarded as a Mott insulator, when the Ir3O12 trimer is identified to one pseudo-atom or one lattice site. The transition can be viewed as a transition from the Mott insulator phase to a kind of charge ordered insulator phase.

Non-uniform magnetic system driven by non-magnetic ion substitution in CaRu1-xScxO3:Two-component analysis

We have studied magnetic and transport properties in polycrystalline CaRu1-xScxO3 for 0 =< x =< 0.20 in order to clarify the substitution effects of a non-magnetic trivalent ion. We find that a ferromagnetic transition with Tc = 30 K is observed in Sc-substituted samples. The composition dependence of the Curie-Weiss temperature implies that the magnetic susceptibility has a paramagnetic contribution with negative theta and a ferromagnetic contribution with positive theta. The field dependence of magnetization at 2 K is also understood as a summation of the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic components. These results suggest that CaRu1-xScxO3 is a non-uniform magnetic system. The relationship between the ferromagnetic ordering and the transport properties is also discussed.

Unconventional magnetism in the layered oxide LaSrRhO4_4

We have prepared polycrystalline samples of LaSrRh1−x_{1-x}Gax_xO4_4 and LaSr1−x_{1-x}Cax_xRhO4_4,and have measured the x-ray diffraction, resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, magnetization and electron spin resonance in order to evaluate their electronic states. The energy gap evaluated from the resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient systematically changes with the Ga concentration, and suggests that the system changes from a small polaron insulator to a band insulator. We find that all the samples show Curie-Weiss-like susceptibility with a small Weiss temperature of the order of 1 K, which is seriously incompatible with the collective wisdom that a trivalent rhodium ion is nonmagnetic. We have determined the gg factor to be gg=2.3 from the electron spin resonance, and the spin number to be SS=1 from the magnetization-field curves by fitting with a modified Brillouin function. The fraction of the SS=1 spins is 2--5%, which depends on the degree of disorder in the La/Sr/Ca-site, which implies that disorder near the apical oxygen is related to the magnetism of this system. A possible origin for the magnetic Rh3+^{3+} ions is discussed.

Dielectric Anomaly in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Frustrated Spin-1/2 System Rb2_{2}(Cu1−x_{1-x}Mx_{x})2_{2}Mo3_{3}O12_{12} (M=Ni and Zn)

Dielectric and magnetic properties have been studied for poly-crystalline samples of quasi-one-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 system Rb2_{2}(Cu1−x_{1-x}Mx_{x})2_{2}Mo3_{3}O12_{12}(M=Ni and Zn) which does not exhibit a three-dimensional magnetic transition due to quantum spin fluctuation and low dimensionality. A broad peak in the magnetic susceptibility - temperature curves originated from a short range helical ordering at low temperature is suppressed by the Ni and Zn substitution for Cu sites. The capacitance is found to anomalously increase with decreasing T below ~50 K, which is also suppressed by the impurity doping. The behavior of the anomalous capacitance component is found to be strongly connected with that of the magnetic susceptibility for Rb2_{2}(Cu1−x_{1-x}Mx_{x})2_{2}Mo3_{3}O12_{12} which indicates that the low-temperature dielectric response is driven by the magnetism.

Optical Conductivity Measurement of a Dimer-Mott to Charge-Order Phase Transition in a Two-Dimensional Quarter-Filled Organic Salt Compound

We report a novel insulator-insulator transition arising from the internal charge degrees of freedom in the two-dimensional quarter-filled organic salt beta-(meso-DMBEDT-TTF)2PF6. The optical conductivity spectra above Tc = 70 K display a prominent feature of the dimer-Mott insulator, characterized by a substantial growth of a dimer peak near 0.6 eV with decreasing temperature. The dimer-peak growth is rapidly quenched as soon as a peak of the charge order shows up below Tc, indicating a competition between the two insulating phases. Our infrared imaging spectroscopy has further revealed a spatially competitive electronic phases far below Tc, suggesting a nature of quantum phase transition driven by material-parameter variations.

Spin state of Co3+^{3+} in LaCo1−x_{1-x}Rhx_{x}O3_{3} investigated by structural phenomena

Neutron diffraction for a polycrystalline sample of LaCo0.8_{0.8}Rh0.2_{0.2}O3_{3} and synchrotron x-ray diffraction for polycrystalline samples of LaCo0.9_{0.9}Rh0.1_{0.1}O3_{3} and LaCo0.8_{0.8}Rh0.2_{0.2}O3_{3} have been carried out in order to investigate the structural properties related with the spin state of Co3+^{3+} ions. We have found that the values of the Co(Rh)-O bond lengths in the Co(Rh)O6_{6} octahedron of LaCo0.8_{0.8}Rh0.2_{0.2}O3_{3} are nearly identical at 10 K. The lattice volume for the Rh3+^{3+} substituted samples decreases with the thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of LaCoO3_{3} from room temperature, and ceases to decrease around 70 K. These experimental results favor a mixed state consisting of the high-spin-state and low-spin-state Co3+^{3+} ions, and suggest that the high-spin-state Co3+^{3+} ions are thermally excited in addition to those pinned by the substituted Rh3+^{3+} ions.

X-ray crystal structure analysis and the Ru valence of Ba4Ru3O10 single crystals

We present the single-crystalline x-ray diffraction study on the Ba4Ru3O10 consisting of the corner-shared Ru3O12 trimers. The crystal structure is re-determined from 78 to 300 K across an antiferromagnetic transition at 105 K. The orthorhombic symmetry (Cmca, space group No. 64) is preserved at all temperatures measured. This structure presents exceptionally long Ru-O distances characterized by a significant distribution within the Ru3O12 trimer. A bond valence sum calculation suggests that the charge disproportionation within the Ru3O12 trimer emerges even at room temperature, which we ascribe to molecular orbital formation in the Ru3O12 trimer, as supported by recent theoretical calculations. Based on the analyzed crystal structure, the electronic states and the nature of the phase transition at 105 K are discussed.

Ga3+^{3+}-substitution effects in the weak ferromagnetic oxide LaCo0.8_{0.8}Rh0.2_{0.2}O3_{3}

Magnetization and x-ray diffraction have been measured on polycrystalline samples of LaCo0.8−y_{0.8-y}Rh0.2_{0.2}Gay_{y}O3_{3} for 0≤y≤0.150 \leq y \leq 0.15 in order to understand the spin state of Co3+^{3+} through the Ga3+^{3+} substitution effect. The ferromagnetic order in LaCo0.8_{0.8}Rh0.2_{0.2}O3_{3} below 15 K is dramatically suppressed by the Ga3+^{3+} substitution, where the ferromagnetic volume fraction is linearly decreased. The normal state susceptibility also systematically decreases with the Ga content, from which we find that one Ga3+^{3+} ion reduces 4.6 μBμ_{\rm B} per formula unit. We have evaluated how the concentration of the high-spin state Co3+^{3+} changes with temperature by using an extended Curie-Weiss law, and have found that the substituted Rh3+^{3+} ion stabilizes the high-spin state Co3+^{3+} ion down to low temperatures. We find that Ga3+^{3+} preferentially replaces the high-spin state Co3+^{3+}, which makes a remarkable contrast to our previous finding that Rh3+^{3+} preferentially replaces the low-spin state Co3+^{3+}. These results strongly suggest that the magnetically excited state of LaCoO3_{3} at room temperature is a mixed state of high-spin state Co3+^{3+} and low-spin state Co3+^{3+}.

High-temperature thermoelectric properties of the double-perovskite ruthenium oxide (Sr1−x_{1-x}Lax_x)2_2ErRuO6_6

We have prepared polycrystalline samples of (Sr1−x_{1-x}Lax_x)2_2ErRuO6_6 and (Sr1−x_{1-x}Lax_x)2_2YRuO6_6, and have measured the resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, susceptibility and x-ray absorption in order to evaluate the electronic states and thermoelectric properties of the doped double-perovskite ruthenates. We have observed a large Seebeck coefficient of -160 μμV/K and a low thermal conductivity of 7 mW/cmK for xx=0.1 at 800 K in air. These two values are suitable for efficient oxide thermoelectrics, although the resistivity is still as high as 1 ΩΩcm. From the susceptibility and x-ray absorption measurements, we find that the doped electrons exist as Ru4+^{4+} in the low spin state. On the basis of the measured results, the electronic states and the conduction mechanism are discussed.

Photo-Seebeck Effect in ZnO

We examine how the photo-induced carriers contribute the thermoelectric transport, i.e. the nature of the photo-Seebeck effect, in the wide-gap oxide semiconductor ZnO for the first time. We measure the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient with illuminating light. The light illumination considerably changes the Seebeck coefficient as well as the conductivity, which is sensitive to the photon energy of the illuminated light. By using a simple parallel-circuit model, we evaluate the contributions of the photo-induced carriers to the conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient, whose relationship shows a remarkable resemblance to that in doped semiconductors. Our results also demonstrate that the light illumination increases both the carrier concentration and the mobility, which can be compared with impurity-doping case for ZnO. Future prospects for thermoelectrics using light are discussed.

High-temperature oxide thermoelectrics

We have evaluated the power factor of transition metal oxides at high temperatures using the Heikes formula and the Ioffe-Regel conductivity. The evaluated power factor is found to be nearly independent of carrier concentration in a wide range of doping, and well explains the experimental data for cobalt oxides. This suggests that the same power factor can be obtained with a thermopower larger than 2kB/e2k_B/e, and also suggests a reasonably high value of the dimensionless figure of merit ZTZT. We propose an oxide thermoelectric power generator by using materials having a thermopower larger than 300 μμV/K.

Weak Ferromagnetism in LaCo1-xRhxO3: Anomalous Magnetism Emerging between Two Nonmagnetic End Phases

Magnetization has been measured for polycrystalline samples of LaCo1-xRhxO3 (0 {\leq} x {\leq} 0.9) in order to investigate magnetism induced in the solid solution of two nonmagnetic end phases of LaCoO3 and LaRhO3. It is found that a ferromagnetic transition is observed below 15 K in the range of x from 0.1 to 0.4. The effective Bohr magnetic moment evaluated from the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility at around room temperature is independent of x for 0 < x < 0.5 (approximately 3 μB per formula unit), and rapidly decreases above x = 0.5. On the basis of detailed magnetization measurements, the spin state and magnetic ordering of LaCo1-xRhxO3 are discussed.

Anomalous dielectric response in the dimer Mott insulator κκ-(BEDT-TTF)2_2Cu2_2(CN)3_3

We have measured and analyzed the dielectric constant of the dimer Mott insulator κ−κ-(BEDT-TTF)2_2Cu2_2(CN)3_3, which is known as a playground for a spin-liquid state. Most unexpectedly, this particular organic salt has nontrivial charge degrees of freedom, being characterized by a dipole-glass-like dielectric relaxation below around 60 K. This is ascribed to the charge disproportionation within the dimer due to the intersite Coulomb repulsion. In this respect, the dipole observed here is purely quantum mechanical, and thereby exhibits unexpected responses.

Nonequilibrium Peierls Transition

Nonequlibrium phase transition of an open Takayama-Lin Liu-Maki chain coupled with two reservoirs is investigated by combining a mean-field approximation and a formula characterizing nonequlibrium steady states, which is obtained from the algebraic field approach to nonequlibrium statistical mechanics. When the bias voltage is chosen to be a control parameter, the phase transition between ordered and normal phases is found to be first or second order. Then, the voltage-current characteristics is S-shaped in some parameter region. In contrast, when the current is chosen to be a control parameter, all the non-trivial solutions of the self-consistent equation are found to become stable. In this case, the phase transition between the ordered and normal phases is always second order and negative differential conductivity appears at low temperature.
