Enhanced Seebeck coefficient through the magnetic fluctuations in Sr$_2$Ru$_{1-x}M_x$O$_4$ ($M = $ Co, Mn)

The layered perovskite Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is a most intensively studied superconductor, but its pairing mechanism, which is often coupled intimately with magnetic fluctuations in correlated materials, is still an open question. Here we present a systematic evolution of the Seebeck coefficient in Co- and Mn-substituted Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ single crystals, in which ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic glassy states respectively emerge in proximity to the superconducting phase of the parent compound. We find that the Seebeck coefficient $S$ divided by temperature $T$, $S/T$, shows a maximum near characteristic temperatures seen in the irreversible magnetization $M_{\rm ir}$ in both of the Co- and Mn-substituted crystals, demonstrating both of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic fluctuations to enhance the Seebeck coefficient. Interestingly, $S/T$ increases with lowering temperature in the parent compound, reminiscent of non-Fermi-liquid behavior, indicating an essential role of coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic fluctuations for the itinerant electrons in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Presolar stardust in asteroid Ryugu

We have conducted a NanoSIMS-based search for presolar material in samples recently returned from C-type asteroid Ryugu as part of JAXA's Hayabusa2 mission. We report the detection of all major presolar grain types with O- and C-anomalous isotopic compositions typically identified in carbonaceous chondrite meteorites: 1 silicate, 1 oxide, 1 O-anomalous supernova grain of ambiguous phase, 38 SiC, and 16 carbonaceous grains. At least two of the carbonaceous grains are presolar graphites, whereas several grains with moderate C isotopic anomalies are probably organics. The presolar silicate was located in a clast with a less altered lithology than the typical extensively aqueously altered Ryugu matrix. The matrix-normalized presolar grain abundances in Ryugu are 4.8$^{+4.7}_{-2.6}$ ppm for O-anomalous grains, 25$^{+6}_{-5}$ ppm for SiC grains and 11$^{+5}_{-3}$ ppm for carbonaceous grains. Ryugu is isotopically and petrologically similar to carbonaceous Ivuna-type (CI) chondrites. To compare the in situ presolar grain abundances of Ryugu with CI chondrites, we also mapped Ivuna and Orgueil samples and found a total of SiC grains and 6 carbonaceous grains. No O-anomalous grains were detected. The matrix-normalized presolar grain abundances in the CI chondrites are similar to those in Ryugu: 23 $^{+7}_{-6}$ ppm SiC and 9.0$^{+5.3}_{-4.6}$ ppm carbonaceous grains. Thus, our results provide further evidence in support of the Ryugu-CI connection. They also reveal intriguing hints of small-scale heterogeneities in the Ryugu samples, such as locally distinct degrees of alteration that allowed the preservation of delicate presolar material.

Prominent electron-hole asymmetry in thermoelectric transport of LaCoO$_3$

We have measured the electrical resistivity and the thermopower of the electron-doped perovskite cobaltites LaCo$_{1-y}$Te$_y$O$_3$. In contrast to the hole-doped systems such as metallic ferromagnets La$_{1-x}M_x$CoO$_3$ ($M$ = Ca, Sr, Ba), the electron-doped samples show an insulating behavior even in a heavily doped range due to a spin-state blockade mechanism that an electron hopping from high-spin Co$^{2+}$ to low-spin Co$^{3+}$ site is energetically suppressed. We find that, despite the electron doping, the thermopower shows relatively large positive values above $y=0.05$, strikingly distinct from the hole-doped case where it comes close to zero with doping. This prominent electron-hole asymmetry seen in the thermopower originates from a bipolar conduction which consists of a slight amount of mobile holes and the main immobile electrons, demonstrating an impact of spin-state blockade on thermoelectric transport.

Third-order Electrical Conductivity of the Charge-ordered Organic Salt $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$

We performed third-order electrical conductivity measurements on the organic conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ using an ac bridge technique sensitive to nonlinear signals. Third-order conductance $G_3$ is clearly observed even at low electric fields, and interestingly, $G_3$ is critically enhanced above the charge-order transition temperature $T_{\rm CO}=136$~K. The observed frequency dependence of $G_3$ is incompatible with a percolation model, in which a Joule heating in a random resistor network is relevant to the nonlinear conduction. We instead argue the nonlinearity of the relaxation time according to a phenomenological model on the mobility in materials with large dielectric constants, and find that the third-order conductance $G_3$ corresponds to the third-order electric susceptibility $χ_3$. Since the nonlinear susceptibility is known as a probe for higher-order multipole ordering, the present observation of the divergent behavior of $G_3$ above $T_{\rm CO}$ reveals an underlying quadrupole instability at the charge-order transition of the organic system.

Ferromagnetic Cluster Glass Phase Embedded in a Paramagnetic and Metallic Host in Non-uniform Magnetic System CaRu_{1-x}Sc_{x}O_{3}

We have investigated both static and dynamic magnetic properties of polycrystalline CaRu$_{1-x}$Sc$_{x}$O$_{3}$ system in order to clarify the role of Sc ions as a disorder for magnetic ordering. We have observed typical features of a ferromagnetic cluster glass state below around 40 K: (i) a broad, frequency-dependent peak in the ac magnetic susceptibility, (ii) a slow relaxation of the magnetization, and (iii) a continuous increase in the dc magnetic susceptibility in field cooling process. The composition dependence of characteristic parameters for the cluster glass state suggests that chemical segregation can hardly explain the clustering mechanism. We propose a possible picture that the ferromagnetic clusters are distributed uniformly and form the glassy state embedded in the paramagnetic and metallic host of CaRuO$_{3}$.

Novel Charge Ordering in the Trimer Iridium Oxide BaIrO3

We have prepared polycrystalline samples of the trimer Ir oxide BaIrO3 with face-shared Ir3O12 trimers, and have investigated the origin of the phase transition at 182 K by measuring resistivity, thermopower, magnetization and synchrotron x-ray diffraction. We propose a possible electronic model and transition mechanism, starting from a localized electron picture on the basis of the Rietveld refinement. Within this model, BaIrO3 can be basically regarded as a Mott insulator, when the Ir3O12 trimer is identified to one pseudo-atom or one lattice site. The transition can be viewed as a transition from the Mott insulator phase to a kind of charge ordered insulator phase.

Thermoelectric transport in the layered Ca$_3$Co$_{4-x}$Rh$_x$O$_9$ single crystals

We have examined an isovalent Rh substitution effect on the transport properties of the thermoelectric oxide Ca$_3$Co$_{4}$O$_9$ using single-crystalline form. With increasing Rh content $x$, both the electrical resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient change systematically up to $x=0.6$ for Ca$_3$Co$_{4-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_9$ samples. In the Fermi-liquid regime where the resistivity behaves as $ρ=ρ_0+AT^2$ around 120 K, the $A$ value decreases with increasing Rh content, indicating that the correlation effect is weakened by Rh $4d$ electrons with extended orbitals. We find that, in contrast to such a weak correlation effect observed in the resistivity of Rh-substituted samples, the low-temperature Seebeck coefficient is increased with increasing Rh content, which is explained with a possible enhancement of a pseudogap associated with the short-range order of spin density wave. In high-temperature range above room temperature, we show that the resistivity is largely suppressed by Rh substitution while the Seebeck coefficient becomes almost temperature-independent, leading to a significant improvement of the power factor in Rh-substituted samples. This result is also discussed in terms of the differences in the orbital size and the associated spin state between Co $3d$ and Rh $4d$ electrons.

Non-uniform magnetic system driven by non-magnetic ion substitution in CaRu1-xScxO3:Two-component analysis

We have studied magnetic and transport properties in polycrystalline CaRu1-xScxO3 for 0 =< x =< 0.20 in order to clarify the substitution effects of a non-magnetic trivalent ion. We find that a ferromagnetic transition with Tc = 30 K is observed in Sc-substituted samples. The composition dependence of the Curie-Weiss temperature implies that the magnetic susceptibility has a paramagnetic contribution with negative theta and a ferromagnetic contribution with positive theta. The field dependence of magnetization at 2 K is also understood as a summation of the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic components. These results suggest that CaRu1-xScxO3 is a non-uniform magnetic system. The relationship between the ferromagnetic ordering and the transport properties is also discussed.

Unconventional magnetism in the layered oxide LaSrRhO$_4$

We have prepared polycrystalline samples of LaSrRh$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$O$_4$ and LaSr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RhO$_4$,and have measured the x-ray diffraction, resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, magnetization and electron spin resonance in order to evaluate their electronic states. The energy gap evaluated from the resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient systematically changes with the Ga concentration, and suggests that the system changes from a small polaron insulator to a band insulator. We find that all the samples show Curie-Weiss-like susceptibility with a small Weiss temperature of the order of 1 K, which is seriously incompatible with the collective wisdom that a trivalent rhodium ion is nonmagnetic. We have determined the $g$ factor to be $g$=2.3 from the electron spin resonance, and the spin number to be $S$=1 from the magnetization-field curves by fitting with a modified Brillouin function. The fraction of the $S$=1 spins is 2--5%, which depends on the degree of disorder in the La/Sr/Ca-site, which implies that disorder near the apical oxygen is related to the magnetism of this system. A possible origin for the magnetic Rh$^{3+}$ ions is discussed.

Dielectric Anomaly in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Frustrated Spin-1/2 System Rb$_{2}$(Cu$_{1-x}$M$_{x}$)$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$ (M=Ni and Zn)

Dielectric and magnetic properties have been studied for poly-crystalline samples of quasi-one-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 system Rb$_{2}$(Cu$_{1-x}$M$_{x}$)$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$(M=Ni and Zn) which does not exhibit a three-dimensional magnetic transition due to quantum spin fluctuation and low dimensionality. A broad peak in the magnetic susceptibility - temperature curves originated from a short range helical ordering at low temperature is suppressed by the Ni and Zn substitution for Cu sites. The capacitance is found to anomalously increase with decreasing T below ~50 K, which is also suppressed by the impurity doping. The behavior of the anomalous capacitance component is found to be strongly connected with that of the magnetic susceptibility for Rb$_{2}$(Cu$_{1-x}$M$_{x}$)$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$ which indicates that the low-temperature dielectric response is driven by the magnetism.

Optical Conductivity Measurement of a Dimer-Mott to Charge-Order Phase Transition in a Two-Dimensional Quarter-Filled Organic Salt Compound

We report a novel insulator-insulator transition arising from the internal charge degrees of freedom in the two-dimensional quarter-filled organic salt beta-(meso-DMBEDT-TTF)2PF6. The optical conductivity spectra above Tc = 70 K display a prominent feature of the dimer-Mott insulator, characterized by a substantial growth of a dimer peak near 0.6 eV with decreasing temperature. The dimer-peak growth is rapidly quenched as soon as a peak of the charge order shows up below Tc, indicating a competition between the two insulating phases. Our infrared imaging spectroscopy has further revealed a spatially competitive electronic phases far below Tc, suggesting a nature of quantum phase transition driven by material-parameter variations.

Spin state of Co$^{3+}$ in LaCo$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_{3}$ investigated by structural phenomena

Neutron diffraction for a polycrystalline sample of LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ and synchrotron x-ray diffraction for polycrystalline samples of LaCo$_{0.9}$Rh$_{0.1}$O$_{3}$ and LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ have been carried out in order to investigate the structural properties related with the spin state of Co$^{3+}$ ions. We have found that the values of the Co(Rh)-O bond lengths in the Co(Rh)O$_{6}$ octahedron of LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ are nearly identical at 10 K. The lattice volume for the Rh$^{3+}$ substituted samples decreases with the thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of LaCoO$_{3}$ from room temperature, and ceases to decrease around 70 K. These experimental results favor a mixed state consisting of the high-spin-state and low-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions, and suggest that the high-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions are thermally excited in addition to those pinned by the substituted Rh$^{3+}$ ions.

X-ray crystal structure analysis and the Ru valence of Ba4Ru3O10 single crystals

We present the single-crystalline x-ray diffraction study on the Ba4Ru3O10 consisting of the corner-shared Ru3O12 trimers. The crystal structure is re-determined from 78 to 300 K across an antiferromagnetic transition at 105 K. The orthorhombic symmetry (Cmca, space group No. 64) is preserved at all temperatures measured. This structure presents exceptionally long Ru-O distances characterized by a significant distribution within the Ru3O12 trimer. A bond valence sum calculation suggests that the charge disproportionation within the Ru3O12 trimer emerges even at room temperature, which we ascribe to molecular orbital formation in the Ru3O12 trimer, as supported by recent theoretical calculations. Based on the analyzed crystal structure, the electronic states and the nature of the phase transition at 105 K are discussed.

Ga$^{3+}$-substitution effects in the weak ferromagnetic oxide LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$

Magnetization and x-ray diffraction have been measured on polycrystalline samples of LaCo$_{0.8-y}$Rh$_{0.2}$Ga$_{y}$O$_{3}$ for $0 \leq y \leq 0.15$ in order to understand the spin state of Co$^{3+}$ through the Ga$^{3+}$ substitution effect. The ferromagnetic order in LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ below 15 K is dramatically suppressed by the Ga$^{3+}$ substitution, where the ferromagnetic volume fraction is linearly decreased. The normal state susceptibility also systematically decreases with the Ga content, from which we find that one Ga$^{3+}$ ion reduces 4.6 $μ_{\rm B}$ per formula unit. We have evaluated how the concentration of the high-spin state Co$^{3+}$ changes with temperature by using an extended Curie-Weiss law, and have found that the substituted Rh$^{3+}$ ion stabilizes the high-spin state Co$^{3+}$ ion down to low temperatures. We find that Ga$^{3+}$ preferentially replaces the high-spin state Co$^{3+}$, which makes a remarkable contrast to our previous finding that Rh$^{3+}$ preferentially replaces the low-spin state Co$^{3+}$. These results strongly suggest that the magnetically excited state of LaCoO$_{3}$ at room temperature is a mixed state of high-spin state Co$^{3+}$ and low-spin state Co$^{3+}$.

High-temperature thermoelectric properties of the double-perovskite ruthenium oxide (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$ErRuO$_6$

We have prepared polycrystalline samples of (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$ErRuO$_6$ and (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$YRuO$_6$, and have measured the resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, susceptibility and x-ray absorption in order to evaluate the electronic states and thermoelectric properties of the doped double-perovskite ruthenates. We have observed a large Seebeck coefficient of -160 $μ$V/K and a low thermal conductivity of 7 mW/cmK for $x$=0.1 at 800 K in air. These two values are suitable for efficient oxide thermoelectrics, although the resistivity is still as high as 1 $Ω$cm. From the susceptibility and x-ray absorption measurements, we find that the doped electrons exist as Ru$^{4+}$ in the low spin state. On the basis of the measured results, the electronic states and the conduction mechanism are discussed.

Photo-Seebeck Effect in ZnO

We examine how the photo-induced carriers contribute the thermoelectric transport, i.e. the nature of the photo-Seebeck effect, in the wide-gap oxide semiconductor ZnO for the first time. We measure the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient with illuminating light. The light illumination considerably changes the Seebeck coefficient as well as the conductivity, which is sensitive to the photon energy of the illuminated light. By using a simple parallel-circuit model, we evaluate the contributions of the photo-induced carriers to the conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient, whose relationship shows a remarkable resemblance to that in doped semiconductors. Our results also demonstrate that the light illumination increases both the carrier concentration and the mobility, which can be compared with impurity-doping case for ZnO. Future prospects for thermoelectrics using light are discussed.

Charge doping-induced quasiparticle scattering in iron-pnictide superconductors as probed by vortex pinning

Charge doping of iron-pnictide superconductors leads to collective pinning of flux vortices, whereas isovalent doping does not. Moreover, flux pinning in the charge-doped compounds is consistently described by the mean-free path fluctuations introduced by the dopant atoms, allowing for the extraction of the elastic quasiparticle scattering rate. The absence of scattering by dopant atoms in isovalently doped BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ is consistent with the observation of a linear temperature dependence of the low-temperature penetration depth in this material.
