Optical Properties of an Axially Symmetric Black Hole in the Rastall Gravity

This work is devoted to the study of the optical properties of the charged-rotating-NUT-Kiselev (CRNK) black hole in the Rastall theory of gravity. By investigating the motion of photons in the CRNK black hole spacetime in the Rastall gravity we show that the deflection angle of photons due to the gravitational lensing is mostly influenced by the NUT charge, parameter of the equation of state for the quintessence and the quintessential intensity. We observe that the effects of the rest of the spacetime parameters are negligible on the deflection angle. We present the shape of the shadow cast by the CRNK black hole in the Rastall gravity for various values of the spacetime parameters. We demonstrate that spin parameter $a$ of the black hole changes the position and size of the shadow of the black hole very little. While changing the values of the rest of the spacetime parameters can alter the shape and the size of the observed shadow of the black hole significantly. We observe that the radius of the black hole shadow and the deflection angle of a photon are bigger for the CRNK black hole in the Rastall gravity, as compared with the case of the Kerr black hole. Lastly, we show how the spacetime parameters can change the observables $R_s$ and $δ_s$, being the average radius of the shadow and the distortion parameter that measures the deviation of the shape of the shadow from a perfect circle with radius $R_s$, respectively. Our results show that in most scenarios, for bigger values of $R_s$ we get smaller values of the parameter $δ_s$.

A study of positive energy condition in Bianchi V spacetimes via Noether symmetries

In this paper we use Noether symmetries of the geodesic Lagrangian in Bianchi V spacetimes to study various cosmological solutions of Einstein's field equations. Our first result is the identification of the subalgebras of Noether symmetries of the equations of motions in such spacetimes with dimension 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 or 10 of the maximal algebra of Lie point symmetries of dimension 13. Secondly we give physical interpretation of new cosmological solutions which satisfy positive energy condition and yield critical bounds on the expansion coefficient $α$, in which the underlying non-flat spacetimes carry interesting physical properties. Specifically the energy density behaves in one of the following ways. (i) It is positive and constant for all time. (ii) It varies with time and attains a global maximum after some time and then asymptotically converges to zero. (iii) It increases for all time and attains a maximum value at the asymptotic limit $t\rightarrow \infty$. In particular a non-flat spacetime is obtained that mimics the expansion in a flat FRW universe dominated by vacuum energy such that the expansion factor has the same form in both. However, the energy density is dynamical in the former.

Marginally Stable Circular Orbits in Schwarzschild Black Hole Surrounded by Quintessence Matter

Marginally stable circular orbits (MSCOs) of a massive test particle are investigated in the spacetime geometry of Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by quintessence. For that matter we consider three important scenarios where the equation of state parameter $ω_{q}$, has one of the following forms (i) $ω_q=-1$ (ii) $ω_q=-2/3$ and (iii) $ω_q= -1/3$. The existence of such marginally stable circular orbits in these scenarios depend on the range of normalization factor $α$. Briefly, we show that in the first case such orbits exist only if $0<α<4/16875$. Moreover in the second case which is a special Kiselev black hole it is found that MSCOs exist when the value of the normalization factor satisfy $0<α\leq 0.00536165238$. In the last case the MSCOs are also shown to exist.

A Slowly Rotating Black Hole in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity and a 3+1 Dimensional Topological Black Hole: Motion of Particles and BSW Mechanism

The motion of a neutral particle in the vicinity of a slowly rotating black hole in the Horava-Lifshitz theory of gravity and 3+1 dimensional topological Lifshitz black hole is investigated. Geodesics for radial motion of the particles are also plotted. Some different cases of the orbital motion of the particle are discussed where maximum and minimum values of the effective potential are calculated. Further the Bañados, Silk and West (BSW) mechanism is studied for these black holes. It is shown that the centre-of-mass energy (CME) of two colliding uncharged particles at the horizon of these black holes remains finite. Thus the BSW effect cannot be seen in these cases.

Dynamics of a Charged Particle Around a Slowly Rotating Kerr Black Hole Immersed in Magnetic Field

The dynamics of a charged particle moving around a slowly rotating Kerr black hole in the presence of an external magnetic field is investigated. We are interested to explore the conditions under which the charged particle can escape from the gravitational field of the black hole after colliding with another particle. The escape velocity of the charged particle in the innermost stable circular orbit is calculated. The effective potential and escape velocity of the charged particle with angular momentum in the presence of magnetic field is analyzed. This work serves as an extension of a preceding paper dealing with the Schwarzschild black hole [Zahrani {\it et al}, Phys. Rev. D 87, 084043 (2013)].

Effect of quintessence on the energy of the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole

The energy content of the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole surrounded by quintessence is investigated using approximate Lie symmetry methods. It is mainly done by assuming mass and charge of the black hole as small quantities ($ε$), and by retaining its second power in the perturbed geodesic equations for such black hole while neglecting its higher powers. Due to the presence of trivial second-order approximate Lie symmetries of these perturbed geodesic equations, a rescaling of the geodetic parameter gives a rescaling of the energy in this black hole. Interestingly we obtain an explicit relation of the rescaling factor that depends on the square of the charge to mass ratio of the black hole, the normalization factor $α$, which is related to the state parameter of the quintessence matter, and the coordinate $r$. A comparison of this rescaling factor with that of the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole (Hussain et. al SIGMA, 2007), without quintessence is given. It is observed that the presence of the quintessence field reduces the energy in this black hole spacetime. Further it is found that there exists a point outside the event horizon of this black hole where the effect of quintessence balances the energy content in this black hole without quintessence, and where the total energy of the underlying spacetime becomes zero.

Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics for FRW Cosmology with Power-Law Entropy Correction

In this work, we have considered the power law correction of entropy on the horizon. If the flat FRW Universe is filled with the n components fluid with interactions, the GSL of thermodynamics for apparent and event horizons have been investigated for equilibrium and non-equilibrium cases. If we consider a small perturbation around the de Sitter space-time, the general conditions of the validity of GSL have been found. Also if a phantom dominated Universe has a polelike type scale factor, the validity of GSL has also been analyzed. Further we have obtained constraints on the power-law parameter α in the phantom and quintessence dominated regimes. Finally we obtain conditions under which GSL breaks down in a cosmological background.

Accretion of Phantom Energy and Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics for Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet Black Hole

We have investigated the accretion of phantom energy onto a 5-dimensional extreme Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet (EMGB) black hole. It is shown that the evolution of the EMGB black hole mass due to phantom energy accretion depends only on the pressure and density of the phantom energy and not on the black hole mass. Further we study the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSL) at the event horizon and obtain a lower bound on the pressure of the phantom energy.

Cosmic Evolution in Brans-Dicke Chameleon Cosmology

We have investigated the Brans-Dicke Chameleon theory of gravity and obtained exact solutions of the scale factor $a(t)$, scalar field $ϕ(t)$, an arbitrary function $f(ϕ)$ which interact with the matter Lagrangian in the action of the Brans-Dicke Chameleon theory and potential $V(ϕ)$ for different epochs of the cosmic evolution. We plot the functions $a(t)$, $ϕ(t)$, $f(t)$ and $V(ϕ)$ for different values of the Brans-Dicke parameter. In our models, there is no accelerating solution, only decelerating one with $q>0$. The physical cosmological distances have been investigated carefully. Further the statefinder parameters pair and deceleration parameter are discussed.

Thermodynamics of phantom energy in the presence of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole

In this paper, we study the validity of the generalized second law (GSL) in phantom dominated universe in the presence of a Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole. Our study is independent of the origin of the phantom like behavior of the considered universe. We also discuss the GSL in the neighborhood of transition from quintessence to phantom regime. We show that for a constant equation of state parameter, the GSL may be satisfied provided that the temperature is proportional to de Sitter temperature. It is shown that in models with (only) a transition from quintessence to phantom regime the generalized second law does not hold in the transition epoch. Next we show that if the phantom energy has a chemical potential, then the GSL will hold if the mass of black hole is above from a critical value.

A Proposal for Determining the Energy Content of Gravitational Waves by Using Approximate Symmetries of Differential Equations

Since gravitational wave spacetimes are time-varying vacuum solutions of Einstein's field equations, there is no unambiguous means to define their energy content. However, Weber and Wheeler had demonstrated that they do impart energy to test particles. There have been various proposals to define the energy content but they have not met with great success. Here we propose a definition using "slightly broken" Noether symmetries. We check whether this definition is physically acceptable. The procedure adopted is to appeal to "approximate symmetries" as defined in Lie analysis and use them in the limit of the exact symmetry holding. A problem is noted with the use of the proposal for plane-fronted gravitational waves. To attain a better understanding of the implications of this proposal we also use an artificially constructed time-varying non-vacuum metric and evaluate its Weyl and stress-energy tensors so as to obtain the gravitational and matter components separately and compare them with the energy content obtained by our proposal. The procedure is also used for cylindrical gravitational wave solutions. The usefulness of the definition is demonstrated by the fact that it leads to a result on whether gravitational waves suffer self-damping.
