Alignment function as a new kind of transverse momentum dependent functions

We argue the existence of new $k_\perp$-dependent functions which can be manifested in the Drell-Yan (SIDIS)-like processes. The presented new functions resemble the well-known Boer-Mulders function associated with the quark spin asymmetry, but in contrast they are sensitive to the transverse motion of partons inside the hadron due to the collective alignment of quark spin vectors.

Conceptual design of the Spin Physics Detector

The Spin Physics Detector, a universal facility for studying the nucleon spin structure and other spin-related phenomena with polarized proton and deuteron beams, is proposed to be placed in one of the two interaction points of the NICA collider that is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia). At the heart of the project there is huge experience with polarized beams at JINR. The main objective of the proposed experiment is the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon. Spin measurements at the Spin Physics Detector at the NICA collider have bright perspectives to make a unique contribution and challenge our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon. In this document the Conceptual Design of the Spin Physics Detector is presented.

On the decomposition theorem for gluons

Recently, the problem of spin and orbital angular momentum (AM) separation has widely been discussed. Nowadays, all discussions about the possibility to separate the spin AM from the orbital AM in the gauge invariant manner are based on the ansatz that the gluon field can be presented in form of the decomposition where the physical gluon components are additive to the pure gauge gluon components, i.e. $A_μ= A_μ^{\text{phys}}+A_μ^{\text{pure}}$. In the present paper, we show that in the non-Abelian gauge theory this gluon decomposition has a strong mathematical evidence in the frame of the contour gauge conception. In other words, we reformulate the gluon decomposition ansatz as a theorem on decomposition and, then, we use the contour gauge to prove this theorem. In the first time, we also demonstrate that the contour gauge possesses the special kind of residual gauge related to the boundary field configurations and expressed in terms of the pure gauge fields. As a result, the trivial boundary conditions lead to the inference that the decomposition includes the physical gluon configurations only provided the contour gauge condition.

The contour gauge in use: telling untold

In Quantum Field Theory, we discuss the main features of the (non-local) contour gauge which extends the local axial-type gauge used in most approaches. Based on the gluon geometry, we demonstrate that the contour gauge does not suffer from the residual gauge. We discuss the useful correspondence between the contour gauge conception and the Hamiltonian (Lagrangian) formalism. Having compared the local and non-local gauges, we again advocate the advantage of the contour gauge use.

Constraining gluon poles

In this letter, we revise the QED gauge invariance for the hadron tensor of Drell-Yan type processes with the transversely polarized hadron. We perform our analysis within the Feynman gauge for gluons and make a comparison with the results obtained within the light-cone gauge. We demonstrate that QED gauge invariance leads, first, to the need of a non-standard diagram and, second, to the absence of gluon poles in the correlators $\langle\barψγ_\perp A^+ψ\rangle$ related traditionally to $dT(x,x)/dx$. As a result, these terms disappear from the final QED gauge invariant hadron tensor. We also verify the absence of such poles by analysing the corresponding light-cone Dirac algebra.

Electroproduction of the $N^\ast(1535)$ nucleon resonance in QCD

Following the 12 GeV upgrade, a dedicated experiment is planned with the Hall B CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab, with the aim to study electroproduction of nucleon resonances at high photon virtualities up to $Q^2 = 12$ GeV$^2$. In this work we present a QCD-based approach to the theoretical interpretation of these upcoming results in the framework of light-cone sum rules that combine perturbative calculations with dispersion relations and duality. The form factors are thus expressed in terms of $N^\ast(1535)$ light-front wave functions at small transverse separations, called distribution amplitudes. The distribution amplitudes can therefore be determined from the comparison with the experimental data on form factors and compared to the results of lattice QCD simulations. The results of the corresponding next-to-leading order calculation are presented and compared with the existing data. We find that the form factors are dominated by the twist-four distribution amplitudes that are related to the $P$-wave three-quark wave functions of the $N^\ast(1535)$, i.e. to contributions of orbital angular momentum.

Gauge invariance and gluon poles for direct photon production

We discuss the hadron tensor of the direct photon production. We study the effects which lead to the soft breaking of factorization by inspection of the corresponding QCD gauge invariance. We emphasize that the special role is played by the contour gauge for gluon fields. We demonstrate that the different prescriptions in the gluonic pole contributions are dictated by the presence of initial or final state interactions in diagrams. Moreover, the different prescriptions that correspond to the initial of final state interactions are needed to ensure the QCD gauge invariance.

New contributions to gluon poles in direct photon production

We consider the direct photon production in two hadron collision with one of the hadrons being transversely polarized. By using the contour gauge for gluon fields, we find that there are new twist-$3$ terms present in the hadron tensor of the considering process in addition to the standard twist-$3$ terms. In this work, we demonstrate that the significance of these new terms are two-fold: first, they are crucial to both the QED and QCD gauge invariance and, second, their contributions to the hadron tensor are at least the same as those from the standard ones. We also study the resuting effects which are responsible for the universality breaking of the corresponding twist-$3$ parton distributions.

Novel effects in twist-three SSA

We discuss the role of gluon poles and the gauge invariance for the hadron tensors of Drell-Yan and direct photon production processes with the transversely polarized hadron. These hadron tensors are needed to construct the corresponding single spin asymmetries. For the Drell-Yan process, we perform our analysis within both the Feynman and axial-type (contour) gauges for gluons. In both the Feynman and contour gauges, we demonstrate that the gauge invariance leads to the need of the new (non-standard) diagrams. Moreover, in the Feynman gauge, we argue the absence of gluon poles in the correlators $\langle\barψγ_\perp A^+ψ\rangle$ related traditionally to $dT(x,x)/dx$. As a result, these terms disappear from the final QED gauge invariant Drell-Yan hadron tensor. For the direct photon production, by using the contour gauge for gluon fields, we find that there are new twist-$3$ terms present in the hadron tensor of the considering process in addition to the standard twist-$3$ terms.

NLO light-cone sum rules for the nucleon electromagnetic form factors

We study the electromagnetic nucleon form factors within the approach based on light-cone sum rules. We include the next-to-leading-order corrections for the contributions of twist-three and twist-four operators and a consistent treatment of the nucleon mass corrections in our calculation. It turns out that a self-consistent picture arises when the three valence quarks carry $40\%:30\%:30\%$ of the proton momentum.

Nucleon Form Factors and Distribution Amplitudes in QCD

We derive light-cone sum rules for the electromagnetic nucleon form factors including the next-to-leading-order corrections for the contribution of twist-three and twist-four operators and a consistent treatment of the nucleon mass corrections. The essence of this approach is that soft Feynman contributions are calculated in terms of small transverse distance quantities using dispersion relations and duality. The form factors are thus expressed in terms of nucleon wave functions at small transverse separations, called distribution amplitudes, without any additional parameters. The distribution amplitudes, therefore, can be extracted from the comparison with the experimental data on form factors and compared to the results of lattice QCD simulations. A selfconsistent picture emerges, with the three valence quarks carrying 40%:30%:30% of the proton momentum.

Space-time structure of polynomiality and positivity for GPDs

We study the space-time structure of polynomiality and positivity---the most important properties which are inherent to the generalized parton distributions (GPDs). In this connection, we re-examine the issue of the time- and normal- ordering in the operator definition of GPDs. We demonstrate that the contribution of the anti-commutator matrix element in the collinear kinematics, which was previously argued to vanish, has to be added in order to satisfy the polynomiality condition. Furthermore, we schematically show that a new contribution due to the anti-commutator modifies likewise the so-called positivity constraint, i.e., the Cauchy-Bunyakovsky-Schwarz inequality, which is another important feature of the GPDs.

Asymmetries associated with higher twists: gauge invariance, gluonic poles and twist three

We explore the electromagnetic gauge invariance of the hadron tensor of the Drell-Yan process with one transversely polarized hadron. Due to the special role of the contour gauge for gluon fields, the prescription for the gluonic pole in the twist 3 correlator can be related to the causality prescriptions for exclusive hard processes. Because of this, we find the extra contributions, which naively do not have an imaginary phase. The single spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan process is accordingly enhanced by the factor of two.

Gauge invariance of DVCS off an arbitrary spin hadron: the deuteron target case

Using twist 3 contributions and the relations, which emanate from the QCD equations of motion, we derive the gauge invariant amplitude for the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off hadron with an arbitrary spin. We emphasize that our derivation is not based on a certain parametrization of the relevant hadron matrix elements of the quark(gluon) operators. As an application, we present the gauge invariant amplitude for the DVCS off spin-one hadron. Using the derived gauge invariant amplitude, the single spin asymmetry is discussed.

High Energy exclusive Leptoproduction of the rho-meson: Theory and Phenomenology

We describe the hard leptoproduction of transversally polarized rho-meson, up to twist 3 accuracy, including 2- and 3- particles Fock-states, in the HERA kinematics of high center-of-mass energy. We first build a model based on a simple approach to the unintegrated gluon density (the parton impact factor) that we compare with H1 and ZEUS data for the ratios of helicity amplitudes T(gamma*T -> rhoT)/T(gamma*L -> rhoL) and T(gamma*T -> rhoL)/T(gamma*L -> rhoL) and get a good description of the data. We also show how saturation effects can be included in this model by extending the dipole representation of the scattering amplitude in coordinate space up to twist 3.

Theory and phenomenology of helicity amplitudes for high energy exclusive leptoproduction of the rho-meson

We review here two approaches to describe hard leptoproduction of transversally polarized rho-meson, based on recent calculation of the gamma*T -> rhoT impact factor up to twist 3 accuracy in the collinear factorization frame, including 2- and 3- particles Fock-states. The first approach uses a model of the unintegrated gluon density (the proton impact factor) which allows a comparison of our predictions with H1 and ZEUS data for the ratios of helicity amplitudes T(gamma*T -> rhoT)/T(gamma*L -> rhoL) and T(gamma*T -> rhoL)/T(gamma*L -> rhoL). In the second approach, we transform the gamma*T -> rhoT impact factor into the impact parameter space. We show that the transformed amplitude factorizes according to conventional dipole picture. We shortly discuss a way to implement the nucleon saturation effects in our approach.

A phenomenological study of helicity amplitudes of high energy exclusive leptoproduction of the rho meson

We apply a previously developed scheme to consistently include the twist-3 distribution amplitudes for transversely polarized rho meson in order to evaluate, in the framework of kT factorization, the helicity amplitudes for exclusive leptoproduction of a light vector meson, at leading order in alphaS. We compare our results with high energy experimental data for the ratios of helicity amplitudes T11/T00 and T01/T00 and get a good description of the data.

On high energy exclusive leptoproduction of the rho meson up to twist 3

The Regge inspired k_T-factorization scheme expresses the scattering amplitude for exclusive leptoproduction of a light vector meson rho in terms of two impact factors, one for the gamma* - rho transition and the other one for the nucleon to nucleon transition, with, at leading order, a two "reggeized" gluon exchange in the t-channel. We report here on a recent phenomenological study where we apply a previously developped scheme which consistently takes into account the twist 3 distribution amplitudes for transversely polarized rho meson. The computation of the gamma* to rho impact factor are performed within collinear factorization of QCD, up to the twist 3 level, based on the Collinear Factorization scheme applied to the amplitudes gamma*g to g rho . Our results are in good agreement with high energy experimental data for the ratios of helicity amplitudes.

Exclusive electroproduction of rhoT meson with twist three accuracy

Exclusive electroproduction of vector mesons is a crucial way to probe QCD factorization properties. Such a factorization is up to now only proven, at the twist 2 level, for a longitudinaly polarized meson. It is crucial to extend our understanding to the case of transversely polarized vector mesons. As a first step in this direction, we evaluate the impact factor of the transition gamma* -> rhoT, which is the relevant part of the amplitude within the kt-factorization approach valid at large energies, taking into account the twist 3 contributions, coming both from quark antiquark and from quark antiquark gluon correlators. We show that a gauge invariant expression is obtained with the help of QCD equations of motion.

Hard exclusive electroproduction of rhoT at twist 3

Exclusive processes in hard electroproduction are one of the best place for understanding QCD in view of its factorization properties. In particular, in the limit of asymptotic gamma* p center of mass energy, they give an access to the perturbative Regge properties of QCD. The HERA experiment recently provided precise data for rho electroproduction, including all spin density matrix elements. From QCD, it is expected that such a process should factorize between a hard (calculable) coefficient function, and hadronic (p and rho) matrix elements. Such a factorization is up to now only proven for a longitudinaly polarized rho. Within the kt-factorization approach (valid at large gamma* p invariant mass), we evaluate the impact factor of the transition gamma* -> rhoT taking into account the twist 3 contributions. We show that a gauge invariant expression is obtained with the help of QCD equations of motion. More generally, relying on these equations and on the invariance under rotation on the light-cone of the factorized amplitude, the non-perturbative Distribution Amplitudes can be reduced to a minimal set. This opens the way to a consistent treatment of factorization for exclusive processes with a transversally polarized vector meson, and clarifies the equivalence of two proposed parametrizations of the rhoT distribution amplitudes, illustrated here by the gamma* -> rhoT impact factor.

QCD factorization beyond leading twist in exclusive processes: rhoT-meson production

Exclusive processes in hard electroproduction is one of the best place for understanding the factorization properties of QCD. Within the kt-factorization approach (valid at large s_{gamma* p}), we evaluate the impact factor of the transition gamma* -> rhoT taking into account the twist 3 contributions. We show that a gauge invariant expression is obtained with the help of QCD equations of motion. More generally, relying on these equations and on the invariance under rotation on the light-cone of the factorized amplitude, the non-perturbative Distribution Amplitudes can be reduced to a minimal set. We prove the equivalence of two proposed parametrizations of the rhoT distribution amplitudes.
