Alignment function as a new kind of transverse momentum dependent functions

We argue the existence of new $k_\perp$-dependent functions which can be manifested in the Drell-Yan (SIDIS)-like processes. The presented new functions resemble the well-known Boer-Mulders function associated with the quark spin asymmetry, but in contrast they are sensitive to the transverse motion of partons inside the hadron due to the collective alignment of quark spin vectors.

Progress and Opportunities in Backward angle (u-channel) Physics

Backward angle (u-channel) scattering provides complementary information for studies of hadron spectroscopy and structure, but has been less comprehensively studied than the corresponding forward angle case. As a result, the physics of u-channel scattering poses a range of new experimental and theoretical opportunities and questions. We summarize recent progress in measuring and understanding high energy reactions with baryon charge exchange in the u-channel, as discussed in the first backward angle (u-channel) Physics Workshop. In particular, we discuss backward angle measurements and their theoretical description via both hadronic models and the collinear factorization approach, and discuss planned future measurements of u-channel physics. Finally, we propose outstanding questions and challenges for u-channel physics.

Transition distribution amplitudes and hard exclusive reactions with baryon number transfer

Baryon-to-meson and baryon-to-photon transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) arise in the collinear factorized description of a class of hard exclusive reactions characterized by the exchange of a non-zero baryon number in the cross channel. These TDAs extend the concepts of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and baryon distribution amplitudes (DAs). In this review, we discuss the general properties and physical interpretation of baryon-to-meson and baryon-to-photon TDAs. We argue that these non-perturbative objects are a convenient complementary tool to explore the structure of baryons at the partonic level. We present an overview of hard exclusive reactions admitting a description in terms of TDAs. We discuss the first signals from hard exclusive backward meson electroproduction at JLab with the 6 GeV electron beam and explore further experimental opportunities to access TDAs at JLab@12 GeV, PANDA, J-PARC and EIC.

Diffractive two-meson electroproduction with a nucleon and deuteron target

The diffractive electro- or photo-production of two mesons separated by a large rapidity gap gives access to generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in a very specific way. First, these reactions allow to easily access the chiral-odd transversity quark GPDs by selecting one of the produced vector meson to be transversely polarized. Second, they are only sensitive to the so-called ERBL region where GPDs are not much constrained by forward quark distributions. Third, the skewness parameter $ξ$ is not related to the Bjorken $x_\text{Bj}$ variable, but to the size of the rapidity gap. We analyze different channels ($ρ_L^0\,ρ_{L/T}, ρ^0_L\,ω_{L/T}$ and $ρ^0_L\,π$ production) on nucleon and deuteron targets. The analysis is performed in the kinematical domain where a large momentum transfer from the photon to the diffractively produced vector meson introduces a hard scale (the virtuality of the exchanged hard Pomeron). This enables the description of the hadronic part of the process in the framework of collinear factorization of GPDs. We show that the unpolarized cross sections depend very much on the parameterizations of both chiral-even and chiral-odd quark distributions of the nucleon, as well as on the shape of the meson distribution amplitudes. The rates are shown to be in the range of the capacities of a future electron-ion collider.

Electroproduction of a large invariant mass photon pair

We study the exclusive electroproduction of a photon pair in the kinematical regime where the diphoton invariant mass is large and where the nucleon flies almost in its original direction. We discuss the relative importance of the QCD process where the two photons originate from a quark line compared to the single (double) Bethe-Heitler processes where one (two) photons originate from the lepton line. This process turns out to be a promising tool to study generalized parton distributions in the nucleon, both at the medium energy of JLab and at a high energy electron ion collider.

High-energy resummation effects in the production of Mueller-Navelet dijet at the LHC

We study the production of two forward jets with a large interval of rapidity at hadron colliders, which was proposed by Mueller and Navelet as a possible test of the high energy dynamics of QCD, within a complete next-to-leading logarithm framework. We show that using the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie procedure to fix the renormalization scale leads to a very good description of the recent CMS data at the LHC for the azimuthal correlations of the jets. We show that the inclusion of next-to-leading order corrections to the jet vertex significantly reduces the importance of energy-momentum non-conservation which is inherent to the BFKL approach, for an asymmetric jet configuration. Finally, we argue that the double parton scattering contribution is negligible in the kinematics of actual CMS measurements.

On the one loop $γ^{(*)}\to q\bar{q}$ impact factor and the exclusive diffractive cross sections for the production of two or three jets

We present the calculation of the impact factor for the $γ^{(*)}\to q\bar{q}$ transition with one loop accuracy in arbitrary kinematics. The calculation was done within Balitsky's high energy operator expansion. Together with our previous result for the $γ^{(*)}\to q\bar{q} g$ Born impact factor it allows one to derive cross-sections for 2- (one loop) and 3-jet (Born) difractive electroproduction. We write such cross sections for the 2 and 3 jet exclusive diffractive electroproduction off a proton in terms of hadronic matrix elements of Wilson lines. For the 2-jet cross section we demonstrate the cancellation of IR, collinear and rapidity singularities. Our result can be directly exploited to describe the recently analyzed data on exclusive dijet production at HERA and used for the study of jet photoproduction in ultraperipheral proton or nuclear scattering.

Photoproduction of a large invariant mass $γρ$ pair at small momentum transfer

The collinear factorization framework allows to describe the exclusive photoproduction of a $γ\,ρ$ pair in the generalized Bjorken regime in terms of a perturbatively calculable coefficient function and universal generalized parton distributions. The kinematics are defined by a large invariant mass of the $γρ$ pair and a small transverse momentum of the final nucleon. We calculate the scattering amplitude at leading order in $α_s$ and the differential cross sections for the process where the $ρ-$meson is either longitudinally or transversely polarized, in the kinematics of the near future Jlab experiments. Our estimate of the cross section demonstrates that this process is measurable at JLab 12-GeV.

Probing BFKL dynamics in Mueller-Navelet jet production at the LHC

We review the results of our studies on the production of two jets with a large interval of rapidity at hadron colliders, which was proposed by Mueller and Navelet as a possible test of the high energy dynamics of QCD, within the next-to-leading logarithm framework. The application of the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie procedure to fix the renormalization scale leads to a very good description of the available CMS data at the LHC for the azimuthal correlations of the jets. We show that the inclusion of next-to-leading order corrections to the jet vertex significantly reduces the importance of energy-momentum non-conservation which is inherent to the BFKL approach, for an asymmetric jet configuration.

Probing the transversity spin structure of a nucleon in neutrino-production of a charmed meson

Including O(m_c) terms in the coefficient functions and/or O(m_D) twist 3 contributions in the heavy meson distribution amplitudes leads to a non-zero transverse amplitude for exclusive neutrino production of a D pseudoscalar charmed meson on an unpolarized target. We work in the framework of the collinear QCD approach where chiral-odd transversity generalized parton distributions (GPDs) factorize from perturbatively calculable coefficient functions.

QCD description of charmonium plus light meson production in antiproton-nucleon annihilation

The associated production of a $J/ψ$ and a $π$-meson in antiproton-nucleon annihilation is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. In this approach, a hard subprocess responsible for the production of the heavy quark-antiquark pair factorizes from soft hadronic matrix elements, such as the antiproton (nucleon) distribution amplitude and the nucleon-to-pion (antiproton-to-pion) transition distribution amplitude. This reaction mechanism should dominate the forward and backward kinematical regions, where the cross sections are expected to be measurable in the set-up of the PANDA experiment at the GSI-Fair facility.

Revealing transversity GPDs through the photoproduction of a photon and a $ρ$ meson

Photoproduction of a pair of particles with large invariant mass is a natural extension of collinear QCD factorization theorems which have been much studied for deeply virtual Compton scattering and deeply virtual meson production. We discuss the production of a photon and a meson, where the wide angle Compton scattering on a meson subprocess factorizes from generalized parton distribution. We calculate at dominant twist and leading order in $α_s$, the production cross-section of a transversely polarized $ρ$ meson which is sensitive to chiral-odd GPDs, and show that it may be measurable in near future JLab experiments.

Evaluating the double parton scattering contribution to Mueller-Navelet jets production at the LHC

We propose a model to study the importance of double parton scattering (DPS) in Mueller-Navelet jets production at the LHC which is consistent with the BFKL framework used to compute the single parton scattering contribution to this process. We study this model in kinematics corresponding to existing and possible future measurements at the LHC and estimate the importance of this DPS contribution on relevant observables for this process, namely the cross section and the azimuthal correlation of the jets.

Exclusive photoproduction of a heavy vector meson in QCD

The process of exclusive heavy vector meson photoproduction, gamma p -> V p, is studied in the framework of QCD factorization. The mass of the produced meson, V = Upsilon or J/Psi, provides a hard scale for the process. We demonstrate, that in the heavy quark limit and at the one-loop order in perturbation theory, the amplitude factorizes in a convolution of a perturbatively calculable hard-scattering amplitude with the generalized parton densities and the nonrelativistic QCD matrix element <O_1>_V. We evaluate the hard scattering amplitude at one-loop order and compare the data with theoretical predictions using an available model for generalized parton distributions.

Lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral collisions at AFTER@LHC

We investigate the potentialities offered by the study of lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral collisions at a fixed-target experiment using the proton and ion LHC beams. In these collisions, exclusive or semi-exclusive lepton-pair production can be used as luminosity monitor as well as a check of the equivalent-photon approximation, via the measurement of the Bethe-Heitler cross section. It can also serve as a probe of the inner hadron structure via the measurement of the lepton-pair azimuthal asymmetry which is sensitive to the timelike virtual Compton scattering. We also briefly discuss the possibility offered by the study of eta(c) production. Finally, we outline the possibilities for lepton-pair production by Pomeron-Odderon fusion in exclusive pp and pA collisions.

Mueller-Navelet jets at the LHC

We report on our NLL BFKL studies of Mueller-Navelet jets. We first perform a complete NLL BFKL analysis supplemented by a BLM renormalization scale fixing procedure, which is successfully compared with recent CMS data. Second, we argue for the need of a measurement of an asymmetric jet configuration in order to perform a valuable comparison with fixed order approaches. Third, we predict that the energy-momentum violation is rather tiny in the NLL BFKL approach, for an asymmetric jet configuration. Finally, we argue that the double parton scattering contribution is negligible in the kinematics of actual CMS measurements.

Neutrino-production of a charmed meson and the transverse spin structure of the nucleon

We calculate the amplitude for exclusive neutrino production of a charmed meson on an unpolarized target, in the colinear QCD approach where generalized parton distributions (GPDs) factorize from perturbatively calculable coefficient functions. We demonstrate that the transversity chiral odd GPDs contribute to the transverse cross section if the hard amplitude is calculated up to order mc/Q. We show how to access these GPDs through the azimuthal dependence of the nu N -> mu D N differential cross section.

On $γN \to γρN'$ at large $γρ$ invariant mass

Photoproduction of a pair of particles with large invariant mass is a natural extension of collinear QCD factorization theorems which have been much studied for deeply virtual Compton scattering and deeply virtual meson production. We consider the case where the wide angle Compton scattering subprocess $γ(q\bar q) \to γρ$ factorizes from generalized parton distribution. At dominant twist, separating the transverse (respectively longitudinal) polarization of the $ρ$ meson allows one to get access to chiral-odd (respectively chiral-even) GPDs. This opens a new way to the extraction of these elusive transversity GPDs.

Production of a forward J/psi and a backward jet at the LHC

We study the production of a forward $J/ψ$ meson and a backward jet with a large rapidity separation at the LHC using the BFKL formalism. We compare the predictions given by the Non Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) approach to charmonium prediction and by the Color Evaporation Model. In NRQCD, we find that the $^3 S_1^{\, 8}$ part of the onium wavefunction is completely dominating the process. NRQCD and the color evaporation model give similar results, although a discrepancy seems to appear as the value of the transverse momenta of the charmonium and of the jet decrease.

QCD description of backward vector meson hard electroproduction

We consider backward vector meson exclusive electroproduction off nucleons in the framework of collinear QCD factorization. Nucleon to vector meson transition distribution amplitudes arise as building blocks for the corresponding factorized amplitudes. In the near-backward kinematics, the suggested factorization mechanism results in the dominance of the transverse cross section of vector meson production ($σ_T \gg σ_L$) and in the characteristic $1/Q^8$-scaling behavior of the cross section. We evaluate nucleon to vector meson TDAs in the cross-channel nucleon exchange model and present estimates of the differential cross section for backward $ρ^0$, $ω$ and $ϕ$ meson production off protons. The resulting cross sections are shown to be measurable in the forthcoming JLab@12 GeV experiments.

Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions: status and prospects

We provide a concise overview on transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions, their application to topical issues in high-energy physics phenomenology, and their theoretical connections with QCD resummation, evolution and factorization theorems. We illustrate the use of TMDs via examples of multi-scale problems in hadronic collisions. These include transverse momentum q_T spectra of Higgs and vector bosons for low q_T, and azimuthal correlations in the production of multiple jets associated with heavy bosons at large jet masses. We discuss computational tools for TMDs, and present an application of a new tool, TMDlib, to parton density fits and parameterizations.

Confronting BFKL dynamics with experimental studies of Mueller-Navelet jets at the LHC

The study of the production of Mueller-Navelet jets at hadron colliders, characterized as two forward jets separated by a large interval of rapidity, is known to be one of the best possible tests of the high energy dynamics of QCD. We analyze this process within a complete next-to-leading logarithm framework à la BFKL. In addition, we use the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie procedure, here extended to the perturbative Regge dynamics, to fix the renormalization scale to its optimal value. The obtained results provide a very good description of the recent CMS data at the LHC for the azimuthal correlations of the jets.

Crossed channel analysis of quark and gluon generalized parton distributions with helicity flip

Quark and gluon helicity flip generalized parton distributions (GPDs) address the transversity quark and gluon structure of the nucleon. In order to construct a theoretically consistent parametrization of these hadronic matrix elements, we work out the set of combinations of those GPDs suitable for the ${\rm SO}(3)$ partial wave (PW) expansion in the cross-channel. This universal result will help to build up a flexible parametrization of these important hadronic non-perturbative quantities, using for instance the approaches based on the conformal PW expansion of GPDs such as the Mellin-Barnes integral or the dual parametrization techniques.

Mueller-Navelet jets at LHC: an observable to reveal high energy resummation effects?

More than 25 years ago, Mueller and Navelet proposed to study the production of two jets separated by a large interval of rapidity at hadron colliders to look for high-energy resummation effects. We here present the results of a next-to-leading logarithmic BFKL study of the azimuthal decorrelation of these jets. This includes next-to-leading corrections both to the Green's function and to the jet vertices. We compare our results with recent LHC data and results obtained in a fixed order treatment.

NLO QCD corrections for DVCS and TCS

The inclusion of QCD corrections to the Born amplitude of deeply virtual Compton scattering in both spacelike (DVCS) and timelike (TCS) regimes modifies the extraction process of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) from observables. In particular, gluon contributions are by no means negligible even in the medium energy range accessible at JLab12. We emphasize the complementarity of spacelike and timelike measurements and raise the question of factorization scale dependence of the O(alpha_S) results.

On Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering at next-to-leading order

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering in the near forward kinematic region is the golden access to Generalized Parton Distributions. We studied the O(alphaS) corrections to the scattering amplitude for both spacelike and timelike kinematics relevant respectively to the leptoproduction of a real photon and to the photoproduction of a lepton pair. It turns out that these corrections are phenomenologically important and that the gluonic contributions are by no means negligible, even in the moderate energy range of JLab12 and of the COMPASS-II experiment at CERN.

On higher twist chiral-odd pion generalized parton distributions

We define in the framework of light-cone collinear factorization method, the chiral-odd generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of a pseudoscalar hadron (such as the $π^0$) up to twist 6. For that, we introduce the relevant matrix elements for 2-parton non-local operators, as well as matrix elements for 3-parton non-local correlators. Their detailed parametrization is fixed based on parity, charge conjugation and time reversal invariance. This leads to the introduction of 28 real GPDs, which are subject to constraints coming from the QCD equations of motion.

Phenomenology of the polarized cross-sections of the rho meson leptoproduction at high energy

We present a model for the polarized cross-sections of the hard diffractive leptoproduction of rho meson in the high energy limit. Our model is based on the light-cone collinear factorization of the virtual photon to rho meson impact factor when using the impact factor representation of the helicity amplitudes of the rho meson leptoproduction. This gauge invariant treatment when expressed in impact parameter space, leads to the factorization on one hand of the color dipole scattering amplitude and on the other hand of the distribution amplitudes of the rho meson up to twist 2 and 3. We show that the results of this approach are in good agreement with HERA data for virtualities above ~5 GeV^2.

Toward modelization of quark and gluon transversity generalized parton distributions

Quark and gluon helicity flip generalized parton distributions (GPDs) encode the information on the nucleon structure in the transversity sector. In order to build a theoretically consistent phenomenological parametrization for these hadronic matrix element within the framework of the dual parametrization of GPDs (or with the equivalent approach of the SO(3) partial waves (PW) expansion with the Mellin-Barnes integral techniques) we establish the set of combinations of parton helicity flip GPDs suitable for the expansion in the cross channel SO(3) PWs.

Violation of energy-momentum conservation in Mueller-Navelet jets production

We study effects related to violation of energy-momentum conservation inherent to the BFKL approach, in the particular case of Mueller-Navelet jets production. We argue, based on the comparison of the lowest order non trivial corrections $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$ to the cross section with predictions of an exact calculation, that the inclusion of next-to-leading order BFKL corrections to the jet production vertex significantly reduces the importance of these effects.

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN

This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts. The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing, accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated luminosity of O(100) fb$^{-1}$. It will become the cleanest high resolution microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by the LHC.

A model for high energy rho meson leptoproduction based on collinear factorization and dipole models

We present a phenomenological model for the helicity amplitudes T11 and T00 of the rho meson exclusive diffractive leptoproduction in the forward limit. This model leads to a very good description of the polarized cross-sections sigmaT and sigmaL when compared to HERA data. This model is based on the impact factor representation of the helicity amplitudes. The gamma* -> rho impact factor is computed within the light-cone collinear factorization scheme, the impact parameter space representation allowing to factorize out the dipole-target amplitude. Finally our description combines a model for the dipole-target amplitude that includes the saturation effects with the results for the impact factor where the twist 2 and twist 3 distribution amplitudes of the rho meson are involved.

Chiral-odd pion generalized parton distributions beyond leading twist

We define in a systematic way, based on the light-cone collinear factorization method, the chiral-odd generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of a pseudoscalar hadron (such as the pi0) up to twist 5. For that, we introduce the relevant matrix elements for 2-parton non-local operators, as well as matrix elements for 3-parton non-local correlators. Their detailed parametrization is fixed based on parity, charge conjugation and time reversal invariance. This leads to the introduction of 20 real GPDs, whose symmetry properties are explicitely given. The reduction of these GPDs to a minimal set is performed by the use of constraints provided by QCD equations of motion and rotation on the light-cone. We show that these 20 GPDs can be expressed through 8 GPDs which satisfy 4 integral sum rules. A surprising outcome of this analysis is the fact that, when assuming the vanishing of 3-parton correlators, as in the so-called Wandzura-Wilczek approximation, the whole set of GPDs vanishes.

Confronting Mueller-Navelet jets in NLL BFKL with LHC experiments at 7 TeV

More than 25 years ago, Mueller Navelet jets were proposed as a decisive test of BFKL dynamics at hadron colliders. We here study this process at NLL BFKL accuracy, taking into account NLL corrections to the Green's function and to the jet vertices. We present detailed predictions for various observables that can be measured at LHC in ongoing experiments like ATLAS or CMS at sqrt{s}=7 TeV: the cross-section, the azimuthal correlations and the angular distribution of these jets. For this purpose, we apply realistic kinematical cuts and binning, and study the dependence of our results with respect to several parameters. We then compare our results with those that can be obtained in a fixed order NLO treatment, and propose specific observables which could actually be used as a probe of BFKL dynamics.

Double logarithms resummation in exclusive processes : the surprising behavior of DVCS

Double logarithms resummation has been much studied in inclusive as well as exclusive processes. The Sudakov mechanism has often be the crucial tool to exponentiate potentially large contributions to amplitudes or cross-sections near phase-space boundaries. We report on a recent work where a very different pattern emerges : the DVCS quark coefficient function C(x,ξ) develops, near the particular point x=ξ, a non-alternate series in α_s^n log^{2n}(x-ξ) which may be resummed in a cosh[K sqrt α_s log(x-ξ)] factor. This result is at odds with the known result for the corresponding coefficient function for the pion transition form factor near the end point C(z) although they are much related through a z -> x/ξcorrespondence.

High energy rho meson leptoproduction

We investigate the longitudinal and transverse polarized cross-sections of the leptoproduction of the rho meson in the high energy limit. Our model is based on the computation of the impact factor gamma*(lambda_gamma) -> rho(lambda_rho) using the twist expansion in the forward limit and expressed in the impact parameter space. This treatment involves in the final stage the twist 2 and twist 3 distribution amplitudes (DAs) of the rho meson and the dipole scattering amplitude. Taking models that exist for the DAs and for the dipole cross-section, we get a phenomenological model for the helicity amplitudes, we compare our predictions with HERA data and get a fairly good description for large enough virtualities of the photon.

Nucleon-to-pion transition distribution amplitudes: a challenge for PANDA

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description of amplitudes for a class of hard exclusive reactions, prominent examples being hard exclusive pion electroproduction off a nucleon in the backward region and baryon-antibaryon annihilation into a pion and a lepton pair or a charmonium. Baryon-to-meson TDAs extend both the concepts of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and baryon distribution amplitudes (DAs) encoding valuable complementary information on the hadronic structure. We review the basic properties of baryon-to-meson TDAs and discuss the perspectives for the experimental access with the PANDA detector.

Saturation effects in exclusive rhoT, rhoL meson electroproduction

We use recent results for the gamma*L -> rhoL and gamma*T -> rhoT impact factors, computed in the impact parameter representation within the collinear factorization scheme, to get predictions for the polarized cross-sections sigmaT and sigmaL of the diffractive leptoproduction of the rho meson at high energy. In this approach the helicity amplitude is a convolution of the scattering amplitude of a color dipole with a target, together with the virtual gamma wave function and with the first moments of the rho meson wave function (in the transverse momentum space), given by the distribution amplitudes up to twist 3 for the gamma*T -> rhoT impact factor and up to twist 2 for the gamma*L -> rhoL impact factor. Combining these results with recent dipole models fitted to DIS data, which include saturation effects, we show that the predictions are in good agreement with HERA data for photon virtuality (Q**2) larger than typically 5 GeV**2, without free parameters and with a weak dependence on the choice of the factorization scale, i.e. the shape of the DAs, for both longitudinally and transversely polarized rho meson. For lower values of Q**2, the inclusion of saturation effects is not enough to provide a good description of HERA data. We believe that it is a signal of a need for higher twist contributions in the rho meson DAs. We also analyze the radial distributions of dipoles between the initial gamma* and the final rho meson states.

Ultraperipheral collisions with proton or ion beams may also be used at RHIC and at collider or fixed target experiments at LHC.

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN: Report on the Physics and Design Concepts for Machine and Detector

The physics programme and the design are described of a new collider for particle and nuclear physics, the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), in which a newly built electron beam of 60 GeV, up to possibly 140 GeV, energy collides with the intense hadron beams of the LHC. Compared to HERA, the kinematic range covered is extended by a factor of twenty in the negative four-momentum squared, $Q^2$, and in the inverse Bjorken $x$, while with the design luminosity of $10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ the LHeC is projected to exceed the integrated HERA luminosity by two orders of magnitude. The physics programme is devoted to an exploration of the energy frontier, complementing the LHC and its discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model with high precision deep inelastic scattering measurements. These are designed to investigate a variety of fundamental questions in strong and electroweak interactions. The physics programme also includes electron-deuteron and electron-ion scattering in a $(Q^2, 1/x)$ range extended by four orders of magnitude as compared to previous lepton-nucleus DIS experiments for novel investigations of neutron's and nuclear structure, the initial conditions of Quark-Gluon Plasma formation and further quantum chromodynamic phenomena. The LHeC may be realised either as a ring-ring or as a linac-ring collider. Optics and beam dynamics studies are presented for both versions, along with technical design considerations on the interaction region, magnets and further components, together with a design study for a high acceptance detector. Civil engineering and installation studies are presented for the accelerator and the detector. The LHeC can be built within a decade and thus be operated while the LHC runs in its high-luminosity phase. It thus represents a major opportunity for progress in particle physics exploiting the investment made in the LHC.

Accessing baryon to meson transition distribution amplitudes in meson production in association with a high invariant mass lepton pair at GSI-FAIR with PANDA

Nucleon antinucleon annihilation into a near backward (or forward) produced meson and a high invariant mass lepton pair admits a factorized description in terms of antinucleon (or nucleon) distribution amplitudes and nucleon to meson (or antinucleon to meson) transition distribution amplitudes. We estimate the cross section of backward (and forward) pion and eta meson production in association with a high invariant mass lepton pair for the kinematical conditions of GSI-FAIR. The cross sections are found to be large enough to be measured with the PANDA detector. Interesting phenomenological applications of the approach are thus expected.

High Energy exclusive Leptoproduction of the rho-meson: Theory and Phenomenology

We describe the hard leptoproduction of transversally polarized rho-meson, up to twist 3 accuracy, including 2- and 3- particles Fock-states, in the HERA kinematics of high center-of-mass energy. We first build a model based on a simple approach to the unintegrated gluon density (the parton impact factor) that we compare with H1 and ZEUS data for the ratios of helicity amplitudes T(gamma*T -> rhoT)/T(gamma*L -> rhoL) and T(gamma*T -> rhoL)/T(gamma*L -> rhoL) and get a good description of the data. We also show how saturation effects can be included in this model by extending the dipole representation of the scattering amplitude in coordinate space up to twist 3.

Mueller-Navelet jets at LHC: the first complete NLL BFKL study

Mueller Navelet jets were proposed 25 years ago as a decisive test of BFKL dynamics at hadron colliders. We here present the first next-to-leading BFKL study of the cross section and azimuthal decorrelation of these jets. This includes both next-to-leading corrections to the Green's function and next-to-leading corrections to the Mueller Navelet vertices. The obtained results for standard observables proposed for studies of Mueller Navelet jets show that both sources of corrections are of equal and big importance for final magnitude and behavior of observables, in particular for the LHC kinematics investigated here in detail. Our analysis reveals that the observables obtained within the complete next-to-leading order BFKL framework of the present work are quite similar to the same observables obtained within next-to-leading logarithm DGLAP type treatment. There is still a noticeable difference in both treatments for the ratio of the azimuthal angular moments < cos (2 phi) > / < cos phi >.

Nucleon-to-pion transition distribution amplitudes and backward electroproduction of pions

Baryon to meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs), non-diagonal matrix elements of the nonlocal three quark operator between a nucleon and a meson state, extend the concept of generalized parton distributions. These non-perturbative objects which encode the information on three quark correlations inside the nucleon may be accessed experimentally in backward meson electroproduction reactions. We suggest a general framework for modelling nucleon to pion (pi N) TDAs employing the spectral representation for pi N TDAs in terms of quadruple distributions. The factorized Ansatz for quadruple distributions with input from the soft-pion theorem for pi N TDAs is proposed. It is to be complemented with a D-term like contribution from the nucleon exchange in the cross channel. We present our estimates of the unpolarized cross section and of the transverse target single spin asymmetry for backward pion electroproduction within the QCD collinear factorization approach in which the non-perturbative part of the amplitude involves pi N TDAs. The cross section is sizable enough to be studied in high luminosity experiments such as J-lab@12GeV and EIC.

On timelike and spacelike hard exclusive reactions

We show to next-to-leading order accuracy in the strong coupling alpha_s how the collinear factorization properties of QCD in the generalized Bjorken regime relate exclusive amplitudes for spacelike and timelike hadronic processes. This yields simple space--to--timelike relations linking the amplitudes for electroproduction of a photon or meson to those for photo- or meso-production of a lepton pair. These relations constitute a new test of the relevance of leading twist analyzes of experimental data.

Resumming soft and collinear contributions in deeply virtual Compton scattering

We calculate the quark coefficient function Tq(x,xi) that enters the factorized amplitude for deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) at all order in a soft and collinear gluon approximation, focusing on the leading double logarithmic behavior in x +/- xi, where x +/- xi is the light cone momentum fraction of the incoming/outgoing quarks. We show that the dominant part of the known one loop result can be understood in an axial gauge as the result of a semi-eikonal approximation to the box diagram. We then derive an all order result for the leading contribution of the ladder diagrams and deduce a resummation formula valid in the vicinity of the boundaries of the regions defining the energy flows of the incoming/outcoming quarks, i.e. x = +/- xi. The resummed series results in a simple closed expression.

The dipole representation of vector meson electroproduction beyond leading twist

We link the recent computation beyond leading twist of the impact factor of the transition gamma*T -> rhoT performed in the light-cone collinear approach, to the dipole picture by expressing the hard part of the process through its Fourier transform in coordinate space. We show that in the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation the impact factor up to twist 3 factorises in the wave function of the photon combined with the distribution amplitudes of the rho-meson and the colour dipole scattering amplitude with the t-channel gluons. We show also that beyond the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation, the hard contribution of the amplitude still exhibits the signature of the interaction of a single colour dipole with the t-channel gluons. This result allows a phenomenological approach of the helicity amplitudes of the leptoproduction of vector meson, by combining our results to a dipole/target scattering amplitude model.

Theory and phenomenology of helicity amplitudes for high energy exclusive leptoproduction of the rho-meson

We review here two approaches to describe hard leptoproduction of transversally polarized rho-meson, based on recent calculation of the gamma*T -> rhoT impact factor up to twist 3 accuracy in the collinear factorization frame, including 2- and 3- particles Fock-states. The first approach uses a model of the unintegrated gluon density (the proton impact factor) which allows a comparison of our predictions with H1 and ZEUS data for the ratios of helicity amplitudes T(gamma*T -> rhoT)/T(gamma*L -> rhoL) and T(gamma*T -> rhoL)/T(gamma*L -> rhoL). In the second approach, we transform the gamma*T -> rhoT impact factor into the impact parameter space. We show that the transformed amplitude factorizes according to conventional dipole picture. We shortly discuss a way to implement the nucleon saturation effects in our approach.

Timelike Compton Scattering from JLAB to RHIC and LHC energies

Timelike Compton scattering (TCS) i.e. the exclusive photoproduction of a lepton pair with large invariant mass nicely complements the already successful experimental study of deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS). The same Generalized Parton Distributions enter both amplitudes, which offer a promissing way to access the quark and gluon nucleon structure. We review recent progress in this domain, emphasizing the fact that analyticity and factorization properties dictate the relation of the NLO corrections to TCS to those of DVCS. We also stress that data on TCS at high energy should be available soon thanks to the proposed experimental program at JLab at 12 GeV, and that, before the future high energy electron ion colliders become reality, the study of ultraperipheral collisions at the RHIC and LHC may open a window on quark and gluon GPDs at very small skewness. .

A consistent model for πN transition distribution amplitudes and backward pion electroproduction

The extension of the concept of generalized parton distributions leads to the introduction of baryon to meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs), non-diagonal matrix elements of the nonlocal three quark operator between a nucleon and a meson state. We present a general framework for modelling nucleon to pion ($πN$) TDAs. Our main tool is the spectral representation for πN TDAs in terms of quadruple distributions. We propose a factorized Ansatz for quadruple distributions with input from the soft-pion theorem for πN TDAs. The spectral representation is complemented with a D-term like contribution from the nucleon exchange in the cross channel. We then study backward pion electroproduction in the QCD collinear factorization approach in which the non-perturbative part of the amplitude involves πN TDAs. Within our two component model for πN TDAs we update previous leading-twist estimates of the unpolarized cross section. Finally, we compute the transverse target single spin asymmetry as a function of skewness. We find it to be sizable in the valence region and sensitive to the phenomenological input of our πN TDA model.

Cross section and single transverse target spin asymmetry for backward pion electroproduction

Nucleon to meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs), non-diagonal matrix elements of nonlocal three quark operators between a nucleon and a meson states, arise within the collinear factorized description of hard exclusive electroproduction of mesons off nucleons in the backward direction. Below we address the problem of modelling pion to nucleon TDAs. We suggest a factorized Ansatz for quadruple distributions with input from the soft pion theorem for pi N TDAs. In order to satisfy the polynomiality property in its full form the spectral representation is complemented with a D-term like contribution from the nucleon exchange in the u-channel of the reaction. We present our estimates for the backward pion electroproduction unpolarized cross section and its transverse target single spin asymmetry within our composite model for pi N TDAs.

Gluons and the quark sea at high energies: distributions, polarization, tomography

This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii) three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executive summary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews for each of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions on various aspects of the scientific opportunities presented by an EIC.

New results in exclusive hard reactions

Generalized Parton Distributions offer a new way to access the quark and gluon nucleon structure. We review recent progress in this domain, emphasizing the need to supplement the experimental study of DVCS by its crossed version, timelike Compton scattering (TCS), where data at high energy should appear thanks to the study of ultraperipheral collisions at the LHC. This will open the access to very low skewness quark and gluon GPDs. Our leading order estimates show that the factorization scale dependence of the amplitudes is quite high. This fact demands the understanding of higher order contributions with the hope that they will stabilize this scale dependence. The magnitudes of the NLO coefficient functions are not small and neither is the difference of the coefficient functions appearing respectively in the DVCS and TCS amplitudes. The conclusion is that extracting the universal GPDs from both TCS and DVCS reactions requires much care. We also describe the extension of the GPD concept to three quark operators and the relevance of their nucleon to meson matrix elements, namely the transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) which factorize in hard exclusive pion electroproduction off a nucleon in the backward region and baryon-antibaryon annihilation into a pion and a lepton pair. We discuss the main properties of the TDAs.

Special attention is devoted to studies of the difference between the next to leading order timelike and spacelike coefficient functions, which plays for this process a role analogous to the large K factor which was much discussed in the analysis of inclusive Drell Yan cross sections. Also in the present studies the timelike nature of the hard scale gives rise to new absorptive part of the amplitude and to the presence of characteristic pi^2 terms, which can potentially lead to sizeable corrections.

On high energy exclusive leptoproduction of the rho meson up to twist 3

The Regge inspired k_T-factorization scheme expresses the scattering amplitude for exclusive leptoproduction of a light vector meson rho in terms of two impact factors, one for the gamma* - rho transition and the other one for the nucleon to nucleon transition, with, at leading order, a two "reggeized" gluon exchange in the t-channel. We report here on a recent phenomenological study where we apply a previously developped scheme which consistently takes into account the twist 3 distribution amplitudes for transversely polarized rho meson. The computation of the gamma* to rho impact factor are performed within collinear factorization of QCD, up to the twist 3 level, based on the Collinear Factorization scheme applied to the amplitudes gamma*g to g rho . Our results are in good agreement with high energy experimental data for the ratios of helicity amplitudes.

Hard exclusive electroproduction of rhoT at twist 3

Exclusive processes in hard electroproduction are one of the best place for understanding QCD in view of its factorization properties. In particular, in the limit of asymptotic gamma* p center of mass energy, they give an access to the perturbative Regge properties of QCD. The HERA experiment recently provided precise data for rho electroproduction, including all spin density matrix elements. From QCD, it is expected that such a process should factorize between a hard (calculable) coefficient function, and hadronic (p and rho) matrix elements. Such a factorization is up to now only proven for a longitudinaly polarized rho. Within the kt-factorization approach (valid at large gamma* p invariant mass), we evaluate the impact factor of the transition gamma* -> rhoT taking into account the twist 3 contributions. We show that a gauge invariant expression is obtained with the help of QCD equations of motion. More generally, relying on these equations and on the invariance under rotation on the light-cone of the factorized amplitude, the non-perturbative Distribution Amplitudes can be reduced to a minimal set. This opens the way to a consistent treatment of factorization for exclusive processes with a transversally polarized vector meson, and clarifies the equivalence of two proposed parametrizations of the rhoT distribution amplitudes, illustrated here by the gamma* -> rhoT impact factor.

New ways to access the transverse spin content of the nucleon

We first describe a new way to access the chiral odd transversity parton distribution in the proton through the photoproduction of lepton pairs. The basic ingredient is the interference of the usual Bethe-Heitler or Drell-Yan amplitudes with the amplitude of a process, where the photon couples to quarks through its chiral-odd distribution amplitude, which is normalized to the magnetic susceptibility of the QCD vacuum. We also show how the chiral-odd transversity generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the nucleon can be accessed experimentally through the exclusive electro - or photoproduction process of a meson pair with a large invariant mass and when the final nucleon has a small transverse momentum. We show that the scattering amplitude simultaneously factorizes in two quite different ways: the part with transverse photons is described by the QCD factorization formula involving the generalized distribution amplitude of two final $ρ$ mesons, whereas the part with longitudinally polarized photons takes the QCD factorized form with the $γ^*_L \to ρ^0_L$ transition distribution amplitude. Perturbative expressions for these, in general, non-perturbative functions are obtained in terms of the $ρ-$meson distribution amplitude.

$γ^* γ^* \to ρρ$ at very high energy

The next generation of $e^+e^-$-colliders will offer a possibility of clean testing of QCD dynamics in the Regge limit. Recent progress in the theoretical description of exclusive processes permits for many of them a consistent use of the perturbative QCD methods. We advocate that the exclusive diffractive production of two $ρ$ mesons from virtual photons at very high energies should be measurable at the future linear collider (LC).

A QCD analysis of \bar p N -> gamma^* pi and \bar p N -> gamma^* gamma. Where is the pion in the proton ?

We study the scaling regime of nucleon-anti-nucleon annihilation into a deeply virtual photon and a photon or meson, \bar p N -> gamma ^* pi, \bar p N -> gamma ^* gamma, in the forward direction. The leading twist amplitude factorizes into an antiproton distribution amplitude, a short-distance matrix element and a long-distance dominated transition distribution amplitude (TDA) which describes the nucleon to meson or photon transition. The impact representation of this TDA maps out the transverse locations of the small size core and the meson or photon cloud inside the proton.

Hard Exclusive QCD Processes at the Linear Collider

The next generation of $e^+e^-$ colliders will offer a possibility of clean testing of QCD dynamics. Recent progress in the theoretical description of exclusive processes permits for many of them a consistent use of the perturbative QCD methods. We find that already on the basis of Born approximation, the exclusive diffractive production of two $ρ$ mesons from virtual photons at very high energies should be measurable at the linear collider (LC).

Probing the partonic structure of pentaquarks in hard electroproduction

Exclusive electroproduction of a K or K* meson on the nucleon can give a Theta+ pentaquark in the final state. This reaction offers an opportunity to investigate the structure of pentaquark baryons at parton level. We discuss the generalized parton distributions for the N-->Theta+ transition and give the leading order amplitude for electroproduction in the Bjorken regime. Different production channels contain complementary information about the distribution of partons in a pentaquark compared with their distribution in the nucleon. Measurement of these processes may thus provide deeper insight into the very nature of pentaquarks.

Probing Transversity in Electroproduction of Two Vector Mesons

Electroproduction of two vector mesons with a large rapidity gap between them provides the first feasible selective access to chiral-odd GPDs. The scattering amplitude of the process $ γ^* N \to ρ_L^0 ρ_T^+ N'$ may be represented as a convolution of an impact factor describing the $γ^* \to ρ_L^0$ transition and an amplitude describing the $N\to ρ_T^+ N'$ transition, analogously to deeply exclusive electroproduction of a meson, the virtual photon being replaced by a Pomeron. The production of a transversely polarized vector meson $ρ_T^+$ selects a chiral-odd GPD in the proton.

Hunting the QCD-Odderon in hard diffractive electroproduction of two pions

Charge asymmetries in diffractive electroproduction of two mesons are proportional to the interference of Pomeron and Odderon exchange amplitudes. We calculate in the framework of QCD and in the Born approximation a forward-backward charge asymmetry which turns out to be sizable in a kinematical domain accessible to HERA experiments. We predict a distinctive dependence of this asymmetry on the invariant mass of the two pions. Testing this prediction is a crucial step in the discovery of the QCD-Odderon.

Pomeron-Odderon interference effects in electroproduction of two pions

We study Pomeron-Odderon interference effects giving rise to charge and single-spin asymmetries in diffractive electroproduction of a pi+ pi- pair. We calculate these asymmetries originating from both longitudinal and transverse polarizations of the virtual photon in the framework of QCD and in the Born approximation, in a kinematical domain accessible to HERA experiments. We predict a sizable charge asymmetry with a characteristic dependence on the invariant mass of the pi+ pi- pair, which makes this observable very important for establishing the magnitude of the Odderon exchange in hard processes. The single spin asymmetry turns out to be rather small. We briefly discuss future improvements of our calculations and their possible effects on the results.

Probing chiral-odd GPD's in diffractive electroproduction of two vector mesons

We consider the electroproduction of two vector mesons with a large rapidity gap between them on a nucleon target in the process $ γ^* N \to ρ_1 ρ_2 N'$. We calculate the Born term for this process within the collinear factorization framework. The resulting scattering amplitude may be represented as a convolution of an impact factor describing the $γ^* \to ρ_1$ transition and an amplitude describing the $N\to ρ_2 N'$ transition. The latter amplitude is analogous to deeply virtual electroproduction of a meson, the virtual photon being replaced by two gluon (Pomeron) exchange . The long distance part of this amplitude is described by Generalized Parton Distributions (GPD) and meson light-cone distributions. The selection of a transversely polarized vector meson $ρ_2$ provides the first feasible selective access to chiral-odd GPD.

Direct J/Psi hadroproduction in k_\perp-factorization and the color octet mechanism

The hadroproduction of direct J/Psi in the framework of the k_\perp-factorization approach is studied. The color-singlet contribution is essentially larger than in the collinear approach but is still an order of magnitude below the data. The deficit may be well described by the color octet contribution with the value of the matrix element <0|O^{J/Ψ}_8(^3S_1)|0> substantially decreased in comparison with the fits in the collinear factorization. This should lead to a reduction of the large transverse polarization, predicted in the collinear approach.

Towards a solution of the charmonium production controversy: k_t-factorization versus color octet mechanism

The cross section of χ_{cJ} hadroproduction is calculated in the k_t-factorization approach. We find a significant contribution of the χ_{c1} state due to non-applicability of the Landau-Yang theorem because of off-shell gluons. The results are in agreement with data and, in contrast to the collinear factorization, show a dominance of the color singlet part and a strong suppression of the color octet contribution. Our results could therefore lead to a solution of the longstanding controversy between the color singlet model and the color octet mechanism.

The gluon field of a fast moving nucleus and the effective langrangian for QCD at high energy

Starting from the effective lagrangian for QCD at high energy we calculate the lowest perturbative contributions to the potential of a relativistic nucleus and compare our results to those derived by Kovchegov (see Y.V. Kovchegov, Phys. Rev. {\bf D55}, 5445 (1997)). The results differ already at order g^3 which can be traced to the fact that the meaning of the underlying gluon fields is different. (The effective gluon field we use is a gauge invariant object.) Both approaches should therefore be seen as alternatives, the relative merits of which have to be judged by their phenomenological success.

Small-x behaviour of the polarized structure function $F_3^γ(x,Q^2)$

We study the small-$x$ behaviour of the polarized photon structure function $F_3^{\ga}$, measuring the gluon transversity distribution, in the leading logarithmic approximation of perturbative QCD. There are two contributions, both arising from two-gluon exchange. The leading contribution to small-$x$ is related to the BFKL pomeron and behaves like $x^{-1-\om_2}$, $\om_2 = {\cal O}(\al_S)$. The other contribution includes in particular the ones summed by the DGLAP equation and behaves like $x^{1-\om_0^{(+)}}$, $\om_0^{(+)} = {\cal O}(\sqrt{\al_S})$.

Diffractive meson production from virtual photons with odd charge-parity exchange

We calculate the cross section of diffractive charge-parity C=+1 neutral meson production in virtual photon proton collision at high energies. Due to the opposite C-parities of photon and meson M (M = eta_C, pi^0, a_2) this process probes the t-channel C=-1 odderon exchange which is described here as noninteracting three-gluon exchange. Estimates for the cross section of the inelastic diffractive process gamma^* p -> eta_C X_p are presented. The total cross section of diffractive η_C meson photoproduction is found to be 47 pb. The cross sections for the diffractive production of light mesons (pi^0, a_2) in γ^* p collisions are of the same order if the photon virtuality Q^2 is m^2_C.
