Generalization of the Bargmann-Wigner approach to constructing relativistic fields

We review the method for constructing local relativistic fields corresponding to the Bargmann-Wigner wave functions that describe the unitary irreducible representations of the $4D$ Poincaré group. The method is based on the use of the generalized Wigner operator connecting the wave functions of induced representations and local relativistic fields. Applications of this operator for constructing massive local relativistic fields as well as massless helicity local fields and massless local infinite spin fields are considered.

General Cubic Interacting Vertex for Massless Integer Higher Spin Fields

We consider a massless higher spin field theory within the BRST approach and construct a general off-shell cubic vertex corresponding to irreducible higher spin fields of helicities $s_1, s_2, s_3$. Unlike the previous works on cubic vertices, which do not take into account of the trace constraints, we use the complete BRST operator, including the trace constraints that describe an irreducible representation with definite integer helicity. As a result, we generalize the cubic vertex found in [arXiv:1205.3131 [hep-th]] and calculate the new contributions to the vertex, which contain additional terms with a smaller number space-time derivatives of the fields as well as the terms without derivatives.

Light-front description of infinite spin fields in six-dimensional Minkowski space

We present a new $6D$ infinite spin field theory in the light-front formulation. The Lorentz-covariant counterparts of these fields depend on 6-vector coordinates and additional spinor variables. Casimir operators in this realization are found. We obtain infinite-spin fields in the light-cone frame which depend on two sets of the $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-harmonic variables. The generators of the $6D$ Poincaré group and the infinite spin field action in the light-front formulation are presented.

On a structure of the one-loop divergences in $4D, {\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric sigma-model

We study the quantum structure of four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ superfield sigma-model formulated in harmonic superspace in terms of the omega-hypermultiplet superfield $ω$. The model is described by harmonic superfield sigma-model metric $g_{ab}(ω)$ and two potential-like superfields $L^{++}_{a}(ω)$ and $L^{(+4)}(ω)$. In bosonic component sector this model describes some hyper-Kähler manifold. The manifestly ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric covariant background-quantum splitting is constructed and the superfield proper-time technique is developed to calculate the one-loop effective action. The one-loop divergences of the superfield effective action are found for arbitrary $g_{ab}(ω), L^{++}_{a}(ω), L^{(+4)}(ω)$, where some specific analogy between the algebra of covariant derivatives in the sigma-model and the corresponding algebra in the ${\cal N}=2$ SYM theory is used. The component structure of divergences in the bosonic sector is discussed.

On the off-shell superfield Lagrangian formulation of $4D$, $\mathcal{N}{=}\,1$ supersymmetric infinite spin theory

We develop a complete off-shell Lagrangian description of the free $4D, {\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theory of infinite spin. Bosonic and fermionic fields are formulated in terms of spin-tensor fields with dotted and undotted indices. The corresponding Lagrangians for bosonic and fermionic infinite spin fields entering into the on-shell supersymmetric model are derived within the BRST method. Lagrangian for this supersymmetric model is written in terms of the complex infinite spin bosonic field and infinite spin fermionic Weyl field subject to supersymmetry transformations. The fields involved into the on-shell supersymmetric Lagrangian can be considered as components of six infinite spin chiral and antichiral multiplets. These multiplets are extended to the corresponding infinite spin chiral and antichiral superfields so that two chiral and antichiral superfields contain among the components the basic fields of an infinite spin supermultiplet and extra four chiral and antichiral superfields containing only the auxiliary fields needed for the Lagrangian formulation. The superfield Lagrangian is constructed in terms of these six chiral and antichiral supefields, and we show that the component form of this superfield Lagrangian exactly coincides with the previously found component supersymmetric Lagrangian after eliminating the component fields added to construct (anti)chiral superfields.

Superspace BRST/BV operators of superfield gauge theories

We consider the superspace BRST and BV description of $4D,~\mathcal{N}=1$ Super Maxwell theory and its non-abelian generalization Super Yang-Mills. By fermionizing the superspace gauge transformation of the gauge superfields we define the nilpotent superspace BRST symmetry transformation ($\mathscr{s}$). After introducing an appropriate set of anti-superfields and define the superspace antibracket, we use it to construct the BV-BRST nilpotent differential operator ($\mathfrak{s}$) in terms of superspace covariant derivatives. The anti-superfield independent terms of $\mathfrak{s}$ provide a superspace generalization of the Koszul-Tate resolution ($δ$). In the linearized limit, the set of superspace differential operators that appear in $\mathfrak{s}$ satisfy a nonlinear algebra which can be used to construct a BRST charge $Q$ without requiring pure spinor variables. $Q$ acts on the Hilbert space of superfield states and its cohomology generates the expected superspace equations of motion.

Massless finite and infinite spin representations of Poincaré group in six dimensions

We study the massless irreducible representations of the Poincaré group in the six-dimensional Minkowski space. The Casimir operators are constructed and their eigenvalues are found. It is shown that the finite spin (helicity) representation is defined by two integer or half-integer numbers while the infinite spin representation is defined by the real parameter $μ^2$ and one integer or half-integer number.

Hierarchy of Supersymmetric Higher Spin Connections

We focus on the geometrical reformulation of free higher spin supermultiplets in $4\rm{D},~\mathcal{N}=1$ flat superspace. We find that there is a de Wit-Freedman like hierarchy of superconnections with simple gauge transformations. The requirement for sensible free equations of motion imposes constraints on the gauge parameter superfields. Unlike the nonsupersymmetric case, we find several different constraints that can decouple the higher superconnections. By lifting these constraints nongeometrically via compensators we recover all known descriptions of arbitrary integer and half-integer gauge supermultiplets. In the constrained formulation we find a new description of half-integer supermultiplets, generalizing the new-minimal and virial formulations of linearized supergravity to higher spins. However this description can be formulated using compensators. The various descriptions can be labeled as geometrical or nongeometrical if the equations of motion can be expressed purely in terms of superconnections or not.

Superfield realization of hidden $R$-symmetry in extended supersymmetric gauge theories and its applications

We present the explicit superfield realizations of the hidden $SU(4)$ and $O(5)$ $R$-symmetries in $4D, {\cal N}=4$ and $5D, {\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in the harmonic superspace approach. The $R$-symmetry transformations are constructed and their algebraic structure is studied. It is shown that such transformations are consistent with both manifest and hidden supersymmetry transformations. These symmetries can serve as an alternative tool for constructing the relevant complete low-energy superfield effective actions determined earlier from the hidden supersymmetry considerations.

Supergraph calculation of one-loop divergences in higher-derivative $6D$ SYM theory

We apply the harmonic superspace approach for calculating the divergent part of the one-loop effective action of $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric higher-derivative gauge theory with a dimensionless coupling constant. Our consideration uses the background superfield method allowing to carry out the analysis of the effective action in a manifestly gauge covariant and ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric way. We exploit the regularization by dimensional reduction in which the divergences are absorbed into a renormalization of the coupling constant. Having the expression for the one-loop divergences, we calculate the relevant $β$-function. Its sign is specified by the overall sign of the classical action which in higher-derivative theories is not fixed {\it a priori}. The result agrees with the earlier calculations in the component approach. The superfield calculation is simpler and provides possibilities for various generalizations.

The renormalization structure of $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric higher-derivative gauge theory

We consider the harmonic superspace formulation of higher-derivative $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric gauge theory and its minimal coupling to a hypermultiplet. In components, the kinetic term for the gauge field in such a theory involves four space-time derivatives. The theory is quantized in the framework of the superfield background method ensuring manifest $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetry and the classical gauge invariance of the quantum effective action. We evaluate the superficial degree of divergence and prove it to be independent of the number of loops. Using the regularization by dimensional reduction, we find possible counterterms and show that they can be removed by the coupling constant renormalization for any number of loops, while the divergences in the hypermultiplet sector are absent at all. Assuming that the deviation of the gauge-fixing term from that in the Feynman gauge is small, we explicitly calculate the divergent part of the one-loop effective action in the lowest order in this deviation. In the approximation considered, the result is independent of the gauge-fixing parameter and agrees with the earlier calculation for the theory without a hypermultiplet.

Low-energy $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ SYM effective action beyond the leading approximation

For $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ SYM theory formulated in ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ harmonic superspace as a theory of interacting gauge multiplet and hypermultiplet we construct the ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetric Heisenberg-Euler-type superfield effective action. The effective action is computed for the slowly varying on-shell background fields and involves, in the bosonic sector, all powers of a constant abelian strength.

On the component structure of one-loop effective actions in $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ and ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetric gauge theories

We study the six-dimensional ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ and ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theories in the component formulation. The one-loop divergencies of effective action are calculated. The leading one-loop low-energy contributions to bosonic sector of effective action are found. It is explicitly demonstrated that the contribution to effective potential for the constant background scalar fields are absent in the ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ SYM theory.

Quantum calculation of the low-energy effective action in $5D$, ${\cal N}=2$ SYM theory

We consider $5D$, ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory in $5D$, ${\cal N}=1$ harmonic superspace as a theory of the interacting adjoint $5D$, ${\cal N}=1$ gauge multiplet and hypermultiplet. Using the background superfield method, we compute the leading low-energy contribution to the one-loop effective action. The result of quantum calculations precisely matches the effective action derived earlier in {\tt arXiv:1812.07206} on the pure symmetry grounds.

Induced low-energy effective action in the 6D, N=(1,0) hypermultiplet theory on the vector multiplet background

We consider the six dimensional N=(1,0) hypermultiplet model coupled to an external field of the Abelian vector multiplet in harmonic superspace approach. Using the superfield proper-time technique we find the divergent part of the effective action and derive the complete finite induced low-energy superfield effective action. This effective action depends on external field and contains in bosonic sector all the powers of the constant Maxwell field strength. The obtained result can be treated as the 6D, N=(1,0) supersymmetric Heisenberg-Euler type effective action.

One-loop divergences in the 6D, N=(1,0) abelian gauge theory

We consider, in the harmonic superspace approach, the six-dimensional N=(1,0) supersymmetric model of abelian gauge multiplet coupled to a hypermultiplet. The superficial degree of divergence is evaluated and the structure of possible one-loop divergences is analyzed. Using the superfield proper-time and background-field technique, we compute the divergent part of the one-loop effective action depending on both the gauge multiplet and the hypermultiplet. The corresponding counterterms contain the purely gauge multiplet contribution together with the mixed contributions of the gauge multiplet and hypermultiplet. We show that the theory is on-shell one-loop finite in the gauge multiplet sector in agreement with the results of [1]. The divergences in the mixed sector cannot be eliminated by any field redefinition, implying the theory to be UV divergent at one loop.

Unfolded equations for massive higher spin supermultiplets in AdS_3

In this paper we give an explicit construction of unfolded equations for massive higher spin supermultiplets of the minimal (1,0) supersymmetry in AdS_3 space. For that purpose we use an unfolded formulation for massive bosonic and fermionic higher spins and find supertransformations leaving appropriate set of unfolded equations invariant. We provide two general supermultiplets (s, s+1/2) and (s, s-1/2) with arbitrary integer s, as well as a number of lower spin examples.

BRST Analysis of the Supersymmetric Higher Spin Field Models

We develop the BRST approach for all massless integer and half-integer higher spins in 4D Minkowski space, using the two component spinor nota- tion and develop the Lagrangian formulation for supersymmetric higher spin models. It is shown that the problem of second class constraints disappears and the BRST procedure becomes much more simple than in tensorial nota- tion. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the BRST procedure automatically provides extra auxiliary components that belong in the set of supersymmetry auxiliary components. Finally, we demonstrate how supersymmetry transfo- rmations are realized in such an approach. As a result, we conclude that the BRST approach to higher spin supersymmetric theories allows to derive both the Lagrangian and the supersymmetry transformations. Although most part of the work is devoted to massless component supersymmetric models, we also discuss generalization for massive component supersymmetric models and for superfield models.

Construction of 6D supersymmetric field models in N=(1,0) harmonic superspace

We consider the six dimensional hypermultiplet, vector and tensor multiplet models in (1,0) harmonic superspace and discuss the corresponding superfield actions. The actions for free (2,0) tensor multiplet and for interacting vector/tensor multiplet system are constructed. Using the superfield formulation of the hypermultiplet coupled to the vector/tensor system we develop an approach to calculation of the one-loop superfield effective action and find its divergent structure.

Effective actions in ${\cal N}$=1, D5 supersymmetric gauge theories: harmonic superspace approach

We consider the off-shell formulation of the 5D, $ {\cal N}$=1 super Yang-Mills and super Chern-Simons theories in harmonic superspace. Using such a formulation we develop a manifestly supersymmetric and gauge invariant approach to constructing the one-loop effective action both in super Yang-Mills and super Chern-Simons models. On the base of this approach we compute the leading low-energy quantum contribution to the effective action on the Abelian vector multiplet background. This contribution corresponds to $F^4$ invariant which is given in 5D superfield form.

Lagrangian formulation of massive fermionic higher spin fields on a constant electromagnetic background

We consider massive half-integer higher spin fields coupled to an external constant electromagnetic field in flat space of an arbitrary dimension and construct a gauge invariant Lagrangian in the linear approximation in the external field. A procedure for finding the gauge-invariant Lagrangians is based on the BRST construction where no off-shell constraints on the fields and on the gauge parameters are imposed from the very beginning. As an example of the general procedure, we derive a gauge invariant Lagrangian for a massive fermionic field with spin 3/2 which contains a set of auxiliary fields and gauge symmetries.

Lagrangian formulation of the massive higher spin supermultiplets in three dimensional space-time

We give explicit construction for massive higher spin supermultiplets for the case of minimal supersymmetry in d=3 and find the corresponding Lagrangian formulations. We show that all such massive supermultiplets can be straightforwardly constructed out of the appropriately chosen set of massless ones exactly in the same way as the gauge invariant description for the massive bosonic (fermionic) field with spin s can be obtained using a set of massless fields with spins s,s-1,...,0(1/2). Moreover, such construction for the massive supermultiplets turns out to be perfectly consistent with our previous results on the gauge invariant Lagrangian formulation for massive higher spin bosons and fermions in d=3.

We consider a six dimensional (1,0) hypermultiplet model coupled to an external field of vector/tensor system and study the structure of the low-energy effective action of this model. Manifestly a (1,0) supersymmetric procedure of computing the effective action is developed in the framework of the superfield proper-time technique. The leading low-energy contribution to the effective action is calculated.

Manifestly N=2 supersymmetric regularization for N=2 supersymmetric field theories

We formulate the higher covariant derivative regularization for N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in N=2 harmonic superspace. This regularization is constructed by adding the N=2 supersymmetric higher derivative term to the classical action and inserting the N=2 supersymmetric Pauli--Villars determinants into the generating functional for removing one-loop divergencies. Unlike all other regularization schemes in N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theory, this regularization preserves by construction the manifest N=2 supersymmetry at all steps of calculating loop corrections to the effective action. Together with N=2 supersymmetric background field method this regularization allows to calculate quantum corrections without breaking the manifest gauge symmetry and N=2 supersymmetry. Thus, we justify the assumption about existence of a regularization preserving N=2 supersymmetry, which is a key element of the N=2 non-renormalization theorem. As a result, we give the prove of the N=2 non-renormalization theorem which does not require any additional assumptions.

On effective Kähler potential in N=2, d=3 SQED

We compute the two-loop effective Kähler potential in three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric electrodynamics with Chern-Simons kinetic term for the gauge superfield. The effective action is constructed on the base of background field method with one parametric family of gauges. In such an approach, the quadratic part of quantum action mixes the gauge and matter quantum superfields yielding the complications in the computations of the loop supergraphs. To avoid this obstacle and preserve dependence on the gauge parameter we make a nonlocal change of quantum matter superfields after which the propagator is diagonalized, however the new vertices have appeared. We fix the suitable background and develop the efficient procedure of calculating the two-loop supergraphs with the new vertices. We compute the divergent and finite parts of the superfield effective action, find the two-loop effective Kähler potential and show that it does not depend on the gauge parameter.

Quartic interaction vertex in the massive integer higher spin field theory in a constant electromagnetic field

We consider the massive integer higher spin fields coupled to an external constant electromagnetic field in flat space of arbitrary dimension and find a gauge invariant quartic interaction vertex which is quadratic in dynamical higher spin field and quadratic in external field. Construction of the vertex is based on the BRST approach to higher spin filed theory where no off-shell constraints on the fields and on the gauge parameters are imposed from the very beginning (unconstrained formulation).

Formalism of gauge invariant curvatures and constructing the cubic vertices for massive spin-3/2 field in AdS_4 space

We study the interaction of massive spin-3/2 field with electromagnetic and gravitational fields in the four dimensional AdS space and construct the corresponding cubic vertices. Construction is based on generalization of Fradkin-Vasiliev formalism, developed for massless higher spin fields, to massive fermionic higher spin fields. The main ingredients of this formalism are the gauge invariant curvatures. We build such curvatures for the massive theory under consideration and show how the cubic vertices are written in their terms.

The Lagrangian and complete set of gauge transformations are obtained. We also develop the formalism of gauge-invariant curvatures for the massive theory under consideration and show how the Lagrangian is formulated in their terms. The massive spin-5/2 field is discussed as an example.

The higher derivative regularization and quantum corrections in ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric theories

We construct a new version of the higher covariant derivative regularization for a general ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theory formulated in terms of ${\cal N}=1$ superfields. This regularization preserves both supersymmetries of the classical action, namely, the invariance under the manifest ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry and under the second hidden on-shell supersymmetry. The regularizing ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric higher derivative term is found in the explicit form in terms of ${\cal N}=1$ superfields. Thus, ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry is broken only by the gauge fixing procedure. Then we analyze the exact NSVZ $β$-function and prove that in the considered model its higher loop structure is determined by the anomalous dimension of the chiral superfield $Φ$ in the adjoint representation which is the ${\cal N}=2$ superpartner of the gauge superfield $V$. Using the background field method we find that this anomalous dimension is related with the anomalous dimension of the hypermultiplet and vanishes if the effective action is invariant under ${\cal N}=2$ background supersymmetry. As a consequence, in this case the higher loop contributions to $β$-function also vanish. The one-loop renormalization structure in the considered regularization is also studied by the explicit calculations of the one-loop renormalization constants.

Two-loop low-energy effective action in Abelian supersymmetric Chern-Simons matter models

We compute two-loop low-energy effective actions in Abelian Chern-Simons matter models with N=2 and N=3 supersymmetry up to four-derivative order. Calculations are performed with a slowly-varying gauge superfield background. Though the gauge superfield propagator depends on the gauge fixing parameter, it is shown that the obtained results are independent of this parameter. In the massless case the considered models are superconformal. We demonstrate that the superconformal symmetry strongly restricts the form of two-loop quantum corrections to the effective actions such that the obtained terms have simpler structure than the analogous ones in the effective action of three-dimensional supersymmetric electrodynamics (SQED) with vanishing topological mass.

Massive Higher Spin Fields Coupled to a Scalar: Aspects of Interaction and Causality

We consider in detail the most general cubic Lagrangian which describes an interaction between two identical higher spin fieldsin a triplet formulation with a scalar field, all fields having the same values of the mass. After performing the gauge fixing procedure we find that for the case of massive fields the gauge invariance does not guarantee the preservation of the correct number of propagating physical degrees of freedom. In order to get the correct number of degrees of freedom for the massive higher spin field one should impose some additional conditions on parameters of the vertex. Further independent constraints are provided by the causality analysis, indicating that the requirement of causality should be imposed in addition to the requirement of gauge invariance in order to have a consistent propagation of massive higher spin fields.

Two-loop low-energy effective actions in N=2 and N=4 three-dimensional SQED

We study two-loop Euler-Heisenberg effective actions in three-dimensional N=2 and N=4 supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics (SQED) without Chern-Simons term. We find exact expressions for propagators of chiral superfields interacting with slowly-varying N=2 gauge superfield. Using these propagators we compute two-loop effective actions in the N=2 and N=4 SQED as the functionals of superfield strengths and their covariant spinor derivatives. The obtained effective actions contain new terms having no four-dimensional analogs. As an application, we find two-loop quantum corrections to the moduli space metric in the N=2 SQED.

Cubic interaction vertex of higher-spin fields with external electromagnetic field

We fulfill the detailed analysis of coupling the charged bosonic higher spin fields to external constant electromagnetic field in first order in external field strength. Cubic interaction vertex of arbitrary massive and massless bosonic higher spin fields with external field is found. Construction is based on deformation of free Lagrangian and free gauge transformations by terms linear in electromagnetic field strength. In massive case a formulation with Stueckelberg fields is used. We begin with most general form of deformations for Lagrangian and gauge transformations, admissible by Lorentz covariance and gauge invariance and containing some number of arbitrary coefficients, and require the gauge invariance of the deformed theory in first order in strength. It yields the equations for the coefficients which are exactly solved. As a result, the complete interacting Lagrangian of arbitrary bosonic higher spin fields with constant electromagnetic field in first order in electromagnetic strength is obtained. Causality of massive spin-2 and spin-3 fields propagation in the corresponding electromagnetic background is proved.

Gauge invariant Lagrangian formulation of massive higher spin fields in (A)dS_3 space

We develop the frame-like formulation of massive bosonic higher spins fields in the case of 3-dimensional $(A)dS$ space with the arbitrary cosmological constant. The formulation is based on gauge-invariant description by involving the Stueckelberg auxiliary fields. The explicit form of the Lagrangians and the gauge transformation laws are found. The theory can be written in terms of gauge-invariant objects similar to the massless theories, thus allowing us to hope to use the same methods for investigation of interactions. In the massive spin 3 field example we are able to rewrite the Lagrangian using the new the so-called separated variables, so that the study of Lagrangian formulation reduces to finding the Lagrangian containing only half of the fields. The same construction takes places for arbitrary integer spin field as well. Further working in terms of separated variables, we build Lagrangian for arbitrary integer spin and write it in terms of gauge-invariant objects. Also, we demonstrate how to restore the full set of variables, thus receiving Lagrangian for the massive fields of arbitrary spin in the terms of initial fields.

On gravitational interactions for massive higher spins in $AdS_3$

In this paper we investigate gravitational interactions of massive higher spin fields in three dimensional $AdS$ space with arbitrary value of cosmological constant including flat Minkowski space. We use frame-like gauge description for such massive fields adopted to three-dimensional case. At first, we carefully analyze the procedure of switching on gravitational interactions in the linear approximation on the example of massive spin-3 field and then proceed with the generalization to the case of arbitrary integer spin field. As a result we construct a cubic interaction vertex linear in spin-2 field and quadratic in higher spin field on $AdS_3$ background. As in the massless case the vertex does not contain any higher derivative corrections to the Lagrangian and/or gauge transformations. Thus, even after switching on gravitational interactions, one can freely consider any massless or partially massless limits as well as the flat one.

Superconformal N=3 SYM Low-Energy Effective Action

We construct a manifestly N=3 supersymmetric low-energy effective action of N=3 super Yang-Mills theory. The effective action is written in the N=3 harmonic superspace and respects the full N=3 superconformal symmetry. On mass shell this action is responsible for the four-derivative terms in the N=4 SYM effective action, such as F^4/X^4 and its supersymmetric completions, while off shell it involves also higher-derivative terms. For constant Maxwell and scalar fields its bosonic part coincides, up to the F^6/X^8 order, with the bosonic part of the D3 brane action in the AdS_5 x S^5 background. We also argue that in the sector of scalar fields it involves the correctly normalized Wess-Zumino term with the implicit SU(3) symmetry.

Two-loop effective potentials in general N=2, d=3 chiral superfield model

We study local superspace contributions to low-energy effective action in general chiral three-dimensional superfield model. The effective Kahler and chiral potentials are computed in explicit form up to the two-loop order. In accordance with the non-renormalization theorem, the ultraviolet divergences appear only in the full superspace while the effective chiral potential receives only finite quantum contributions in the massless case. As an application, the two-loop effective scalar potential is found for the three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric Wess-Zumino model.

On manifolds admitting the consistent Lagrangian formulation for higher spin fields

We study a possibility of Lagrangian formulation for free higher spin bosonic totally symmetric tensor field on the background manifold characterizing by the arbitrary metric, vector and third rank tensor fields in framework of BRST approach. Assuming existence of massless and flat limits in the Lagrangian and using the most general form of the operators of constraints we show that the algebra generated by these operators will be closed only for constant curvature space with no nontrivial coupling to the third rank tensor and the strength of the vector fields. This result finally proves that the consistent Lagrangian formulation at the conditions under consideration is possible only in constant curvature Riemann space.

BRST Lagrangian construction for spin-2 field in Einstein space

We explore a new possibility of BRST construction in higher spin field theory to obtain a consistent Lagrangian for massive spin-2 field in Einstein space. Such approach automatically leads to gauge invariant Lagrangian with suitable auxiliary and Stuckelberg fields. It is proved that in this case a propagation of spin-2 field is hyperbolic and causal. Also we extend notion of partial masslessness for spin-2 field in the background under consideration.

Effective action of three-dimensional extended supersymmetric matter on gauge superfield background

We study the low-energy effective actions for gauge superfields induced by quantum N=2 and N=4 supersymmetric matter fields in three-dimensional Minkowski space. Analyzing the superconformal invariants in the N=2 superspace we propose a general form of the N=2 gauge invariant and superconformal effective action. The leading terms in this action are fixed by the symmetry up to the coefficients while the higher order terms with respect to the Maxwell field strength are found up to one arbitrary function of quasi-primary N=2 superfields constructed from the superfield strength and its covariant spinor derivatives. Then we find this function and the coefficients by direct quantum computations in the N=2 superspace. The effective action of N=4 gauge multiplet is obtained by generalizing the N=2 effective action.

Low-energy effective actions in three-dimensional extended SYM theories

We develop the background field method in the N=2, d=3 superspace for studying effective actions in three-dimensional SYM models which live in the world-volume of various 2-branes. In particular, the low-energy effective action for the N=2 quiver gauge theory with four chiral superfields in the bifundamental representation is studied. This gauge theory describes the D2 brane probing the conifold singularity. Surprisingly, the leading terms in this effective action reproduce the classical action of the Abelian ABJM theory confirming the fact that the M2 brane can be considered as the effective theory for the D2 brane at strong coupling. Apart from this N=2 quiver gauge theory we study the low-energy effective action in pure N=2, N=4 and N=8 SYM theories with gauge group SU(N) spontaneously broken down to an Abelian subgroup. In particular, for the N=4 SYM we find similar correspondence between the leading terms in its effective action and the classical action of the Abelian Gaiotto-Witten theory.

ABJM models in N=3 harmonic superspace

We construct the classical action of the Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) model in the N=3, d=3 harmonic superspace. In such a formulation three out of six supersymmetries are realized off shell while the other three mix the superfields and close on shell. The superfield action involves two hypermultiplet superfields in the bifundamental representation of the gauge group and two Chern-Simons gauge superfields corresponding to the left and right gauge groups. The N=3 superconformal invariance allows only for a minimal gauge interaction of the hypermultiplets. Amazingly, the correct sextic scalar potential of ABJM emerges after the elimination of auxiliary fields. Besides the original U(N)xU(N) ABJM model, we also construct N=3 superfield formulations of some generalizations. For the SU(2)xSU(2) case we give a simple superfield proof of its enhanced N=8 supersymmetry and SO(8) R-symmetry.

Since the central charge breaks the U(4) R-symmetry group of the N=4 superalgebra down to USp(4), we consider the superparticle dynamics in N=4 harmonic superspace with USp(4)/(U(1)xU(1)) harmonic variables. We show that the quantization of a massive superparticle with central charge leads to a superfield realization of the N=4 massive vector multiplet in N=4 harmonic superspace. In the massless case without central charge the superparticle quantization reproduces three different multiplets: the N=4 SYM multiplet, the N=4 gravitino multiplet and N=4 supergravity multiplet. The SYM multiplet is described by six analytic superfield strengths with different types of analyticity. We show that these strengths solve the N=4 SYM constraints and can be used for the construction of actions in N=4 harmonic superspace.

Quartet unconstrained formulation for massive higher spin fields

We generalize the unconstrained description of free massless higher spin fields previously developed in [Nucl.Phys. B 779 (2007) 155] to the case of free massive higher spin fields in a flat space of arbitrary dimension. The Lagrangian is given in an easy-to-handle form for an arbitrary value of spin. It is local, free from higher derivative terms, and involves a minimal number of auxiliary fields needed for an unconstrained gauge invariant description of a free massive higher spin field in arbitrary dimension.

Renormalizability of non-anticommutative N=(1,1) theories with singlet deformation

We study the quantum properties of two theories with a non-anticommutative (or nilpotent) chiral singlet deformation of N=(1,1) supersymmetry: the abelian model of a vector gauge multiplet and the model of a gauge multiplet interacting with a neutral hypermultiplet. In spite of the presence of a negative-mass-dimension coupling constant (deformation parameter), both theories are shown to be finite in the sense that the full effective action is one-loop exact and contains finitely many divergent terms, which vanish on-shell. The beta-function for the coupling constant is equal to zero. The divergencies can all be removed off shell by a redefinition of one of the two scalar fields of the gauge multiplet. These notable quantum properties are tightly related to the existence of a Seiberg-Witten-type transformation in both models.

BRST approach to Lagrangian construction for fermionic massless higher spin fields

We develop the BRST approach to Lagrangian formulation for all massless half-integer higher spin fields on an arbitrary dimensional flat space. General procedure of Lagrangian construction describing the dynamics of fermionic field with any spin is given. It is shown that in fermionic case the higher spin field model is a reducible gauge theory and the order of reducibility grows with the value of spin. No off-shell constraints on the fields and the gauge parameters are used. We prove that in four dimensions after partial gauge fixing the Lagrangian obtained can be transformed to Fang-Fronsdal form however, in general case, it includes the auxiliary fields and possesses the more gauge symmetries in compare with Fang-Fronsdal Lagrangian. As an example of general procedure, we derive the new Lagrangian for spin 5/2 field containing all set of auxiliary fields and gauge symmetries of free fermionic higher spin field theory.

Gauge invariant Lagrangian construction for massive bosonic higher spin fields in D dimentions

We develop the BRST approach to Lagrangian formulation for massive higher integer spin fields on a flat space-time of arbitrary dimension. General procedure of gauge invariant Lagrangian construction describing the dynamics of massive bosonic field with any spin is given. No off-shell constraints on the fields (like tracelessness) and the gauge parameters are imposed. The procedure is based on construction of new representation for the closed algebra generated by the constraints defining an irreducible massive bosonic representation of the Poincare group. We also construct Lagrangian describing propagation of all massive bosonic fields simultaneously. As an example of the general procedure, we derive the Lagrangians for spin-1, spin-2 and spin-3 fields containing total set of auxiliary fields and gauge symmetries of free massive bosonic higher spin field theory.

Massive 4D, N = 1 Superspin 1 & 3/2 Multiplets and Dualities

Lagrangians for several new off-shell 4D, N = 1 supersymmetric descriptions of massive superspin-1 and superspin-3/2 multiplets are described. Taken together with the models previously constructed, there are now four off-shell formulations for the massive gravitino multiplet (superspin-1) and six off-shell formulations for the massive graviton multiplet (superspin-3/2). Duality transformations are derived which relate some of these dynamical systems.

Renormalization of the energy-momentum tensor in noncommutative complex scalar field theory

We study the renormalization of dimension four composite operators and the energy-momentum tensor in noncommutative complex scalar field theory. The proper operator basis is defined and it is proved that the bare composite operators are expressed via renormalized ones with the help of an appropriate mixing matrix which is calculated in the one-loop approximation. The number and form of the operators in the basis and the structure of the mixing matrix essentially differ from those in the corresponding commutative theory and in noncommutative real scalar field theory. We show that the energy-momentum tensor in the noncommutative complex scalar field theory is defined up to six arbitrary constants. The canonically defined energy-momentum tensor is not finite and must be replaced by the "improved" one, in order to provide finiteness. Suitable "improving" terms are found. Renormalization of dimension four composite operators at zero momentum transfer is also studied. It is shown that the mixing matrices are different for the cases of arbitrary and zero momentum transfer. The energy-momentum vector, unlike the energy-momentum tensor, is defined unambigously and does not require "improving", in order to be conserved and finite, at least in the one-loop approximation.

Complete Low-Energy Effective action in N=4 SYM: a Direct N=2 Supergraph Calculation

Using the covariant N=2 harmonic supergraph techniques we calculate the one-loop low-energy effective action of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb branch with gauge group SU(2) spontaneously broken down to U(1). The full dependence of the low-energy effective action on both the hypermultiplet and gauge fields is determined. The direct quantum calculation confirms the correctness of the exact N=4 SYM low-energy effective action derived in hep-th/0111062 on the purely algebraic ground by invoking a hidden N=2 supersymmetry which completes the manifest N=2 one to N=4. Our results provide an exhaustive solution to the problem of finding out the exact completely N=4 supersymmetric low-energy effective action for the theory under consideration.

New 4D, N = 1 Superfield Theory: Model of Free Massive Superspin-3/2 Multiplet

We present a Lagrangian formulation for the free superspin-3/2 massive 4D, N=1 superfield. The model is described by a dynamical real vector superfield and an auxiliary real scalar superfield. The corresponding multiplet contains spin-1, spin-2 and two spin-3/2 propagating component fields on-shell. The auxillary superfield is needed to ensure that the on-shell vector superfield carries only the irreducible representation of the Poincare supergroup with a given mass and the fixed superspin of 3/2. The bosonic sector of the component level of the model is also presented.

Low-Energy Effective Action in N=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory

We consider N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory formulated in terms of N=2 superfields in harmonic superspace. Using the background field method we define manifestly gauge invariant and N=2 supersymmetric effective action depending on N=2 strength superfields and develop a general procedure for its calculation in one-loop approximation. Explicit form for this effective action is found for the case of SU(2) gauge group broken down to U(1).

On a Gauge Invariant Quantum Formulation for Non-gauge Classical Theory

We propose a method of constructing a gauge invariant canonical formulation for non-gauge classical theory which depends on a set of parameters. Requirement of closure for algebra of operators generating quantum gauge transformations leads to restrictions on parameters of the theory. This approach is then applied for illustration to bosonic string theory coupled to background tachyonic field. It is shown that within the proposed canonical formulation the known mass-shell condition for tachyon is produced.

Massive fields dynamics in open bosonic string theory

We consider the theory of open bosonic string in massive background fields. The general structure of renormalization is investigated. A general covariant action for a string in background fields of the first massive level is suggested and its symmetries are described. Equations of motion for the background fields are obtained by demanding that the renormalized operator of the energy-momentum tensor trace vanishes.

Higher spins dynamics in the closed string theory

The general $σ$-model-type string action including both massless and massive higher spins background fields is suggested. Field equations for background fields are followed from the requirement of quantum Weyl invariance. It is shown that renormalization of the theory can be produced level by level. The detailed consideration of background fields structure and corresponding fields equations is given for the first massive level of the closed bosonic string.
