Superfield realization of hidden $R$-symmetry in extended supersymmetric gauge theories and its applications

We present the explicit superfield realizations of the hidden $SU(4)$ and $O(5)$ $R$-symmetries in $4D, {\cal N}=4$ and $5D, {\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in the harmonic superspace approach. The $R$-symmetry transformations are constructed and their algebraic structure is studied. It is shown that such transformations are consistent with both manifest and hidden supersymmetry transformations. These symmetries can serve as an alternative tool for constructing the relevant complete low-energy superfield effective actions determined earlier from the hidden supersymmetry considerations.

Supergraph calculation of one-loop divergences in higher-derivative $6D$ SYM theory

We apply the harmonic superspace approach for calculating the divergent part of the one-loop effective action of $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric higher-derivative gauge theory with a dimensionless coupling constant. Our consideration uses the background superfield method allowing to carry out the analysis of the effective action in a manifestly gauge covariant and ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric way. We exploit the regularization by dimensional reduction in which the divergences are absorbed into a renormalization of the coupling constant. Having the expression for the one-loop divergences, we calculate the relevant $β$-function. Its sign is specified by the overall sign of the classical action which in higher-derivative theories is not fixed {\it a priori}. The result agrees with the earlier calculations in the component approach. The superfield calculation is simpler and provides possibilities for various generalizations.

The renormalization structure of $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric higher-derivative gauge theory

We consider the harmonic superspace formulation of higher-derivative $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric gauge theory and its minimal coupling to a hypermultiplet. In components, the kinetic term for the gauge field in such a theory involves four space-time derivatives. The theory is quantized in the framework of the superfield background method ensuring manifest $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetry and the classical gauge invariance of the quantum effective action. We evaluate the superficial degree of divergence and prove it to be independent of the number of loops. Using the regularization by dimensional reduction, we find possible counterterms and show that they can be removed by the coupling constant renormalization for any number of loops, while the divergences in the hypermultiplet sector are absent at all. Assuming that the deviation of the gauge-fixing term from that in the Feynman gauge is small, we explicitly calculate the divergent part of the one-loop effective action in the lowest order in this deviation. In the approximation considered, the result is independent of the gauge-fixing parameter and agrees with the earlier calculation for the theory without a hypermultiplet.

Low-energy $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ SYM effective action beyond the leading approximation

For $6D$, ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ SYM theory formulated in ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ harmonic superspace as a theory of interacting gauge multiplet and hypermultiplet we construct the ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetric Heisenberg-Euler-type superfield effective action. The effective action is computed for the slowly varying on-shell background fields and involves, in the bosonic sector, all powers of a constant abelian strength.

Quantum calculation of the low-energy effective action in $5D$, ${\cal N}=2$ SYM theory

We consider $5D$, ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory in $5D$, ${\cal N}=1$ harmonic superspace as a theory of the interacting adjoint $5D$, ${\cal N}=1$ gauge multiplet and hypermultiplet. Using the background superfield method, we compute the leading low-energy contribution to the one-loop effective action. The result of quantum calculations precisely matches the effective action derived earlier in {\tt arXiv:1812.07206} on the pure symmetry grounds.

One-loop divergences in the 6D, N=(1,0) abelian gauge theory

We consider, in the harmonic superspace approach, the six-dimensional N=(1,0) supersymmetric model of abelian gauge multiplet coupled to a hypermultiplet. The superficial degree of divergence is evaluated and the structure of possible one-loop divergences is analyzed. Using the superfield proper-time and background-field technique, we compute the divergent part of the one-loop effective action depending on both the gauge multiplet and the hypermultiplet. The corresponding counterterms contain the purely gauge multiplet contribution together with the mixed contributions of the gauge multiplet and hypermultiplet. We show that the theory is on-shell one-loop finite in the gauge multiplet sector in agreement with the results of [1]. The divergences in the mixed sector cannot be eliminated by any field redefinition, implying the theory to be UV divergent at one loop.

Self-Dual N=2 Born-Infeld Theory Through Auxiliary Superfields

There is an evidence that the N=2 Born-Infeld theory with spontaneously broken N=4 supersymmetry exhibits self-duality. We perform a further check of this hypothesis by constructing a new representation for the N=2 Born-Infeld action through the auxiliary chiral superfield U. In such a formulation, self-duality is equivalent to U(1) invariance of the U interaction. We explicitly calculate the auxiliary interaction up to the 10th order and show its U(1) duality invariance, thus proving that the original action is self-dual to the same order. We also suggest a new method of recursive computation of the N=2 Born-Infeld action in the standard formulation, based solely on the nonlinear realization of the N=4 central charge on the N=2 superfield strengths W, \bar W.

Unifying the PST and the auxiliary tensor field formulations of 4D self-duality

We unify the Lorentz- and O(2) duality-covariant approach to 4D self-dual theories by Pasti, Sorokin and Tonin (PST) with the formulation involving an auxiliary tensor field. We present the basic features of the new hybrid approach, including symmetries of the relevant generalized PST action. Its salient peculiarity is the unique form of the realization of the PST gauge symmetries. The corresponding transformations do not affect the auxiliary tensor field, which guarantees the self-duality of the nonlinear actions in which the O(2) invariant interactions are constructed out of the tensor field.

Bispinor Auxiliary Fields in Duality-Invariant Electrodynamics Revisited

Motivated by a recent progress in studying the duality-symmetric models of nonlinear electrodynamics, we revert to the auxiliary tensorial (bispinor) field formulation of the O(2) duality proposed by us in arXiv:hep-th/0110074, arXiv:hep-th/0303192. In this approach, the entire information about the given duality-symmetric system is encoded in the O(2) invariant interaction Lagrangian which is a function of the auxiliary fields V_{αβ}, \bar V_{\dot α\dot β}. We extend this setting to duality-symmetric systems with higher derivatives and show that the recently employed "nonlinear twisted self-duality constraints" amount to the equations of motion for the auxiliary tensorial fields in our approach. Some other related issues are briefly discussed and a few instructive examples are explicitly worked out.

Bispinor Auxiliary Fields in Duality-Invariant Electrodynamics Revisited: The U(N) Case

We update and detail the formulation of the duality-invariant systems of N interacting abelian gauge fields with N auxiliary bispinor fields added. In this setting, the self-duality amounts to U(N) invariance of the nonlinear interaction of the auxiliary fields. The U(N) self-dual Lagrangians arise after solving the nonlinear equations of motion for the auxiliary fields. We also elaborate on a new extended version of the bispinor field formulation involving some additional scalar auxiliary fields and study U(N) invariant interactions with derivatives of the auxiliary bispinor fields. Such interactions generate higher-derivative U(N) self-dual theories.

Dirac Operator on Complex Manifolds and Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

We explore a new simple N=2 SQM model describing the motion over complex manifolds in external gauge fields. The nilpotent supercharge Q of the model can be interpreted as a (twisted) exterior holomorphic derivative, such that the model realizes the twisted Dolbeault complex. The sum Q + \bar Q can be interpreted as the Dirac operator: the standard Dirac operator if the manifold is Kähler and a certain "truncated" Dirac operator for a generic complex manifold. Focusing on the Kähler case, we give new simple physical proofs of the two mathematical facts: (i) the equivalence of the twisted Dirac and twisted Dolbeault complexes and (ii) the Atiyah-Singer theorem.

Superconformal N=3 SYM Low-Energy Effective Action

We construct a manifestly N=3 supersymmetric low-energy effective action of N=3 super Yang-Mills theory. The effective action is written in the N=3 harmonic superspace and respects the full N=3 superconformal symmetry. On mass shell this action is responsible for the four-derivative terms in the N=4 SYM effective action, such as F^4/X^4 and its supersymmetric completions, while off shell it involves also higher-derivative terms. For constant Maxwell and scalar fields its bosonic part coincides, up to the F^6/X^8 order, with the bosonic part of the D3 brane action in the AdS_5 x S^5 background. We also argue that in the sector of scalar fields it involves the correctly normalized Wess-Zumino term with the implicit SU(3) symmetry.

ABJM models in N=3 harmonic superspace

We construct the classical action of the Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) model in the N=3, d=3 harmonic superspace. In such a formulation three out of six supersymmetries are realized off shell while the other three mix the superfields and close on shell. The superfield action involves two hypermultiplet superfields in the bifundamental representation of the gauge group and two Chern-Simons gauge superfields corresponding to the left and right gauge groups. The N=3 superconformal invariance allows only for a minimal gauge interaction of the hypermultiplets. Amazingly, the correct sextic scalar potential of ABJM emerges after the elimination of auxiliary fields. Besides the original U(N)xU(N) ABJM model, we also construct N=3 superfield formulations of some generalizations. For the SU(2)xSU(2) case we give a simple superfield proof of its enhanced N=8 supersymmetry and SO(8) R-symmetry.

Cryptoreality of nonanticommutative Hamiltonians

We note that, though nonanticommutative (NAC) deformations of Minkowski supersymmetric theories do not respect the reality condition and seem to lead to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians H, the latter belong to the class of ``cryptoreal'' Hamiltonians considered recently by Bender and collaborators. They can be made manifestly Hermitian via the similarity transformation H -> exp{R} H exp{-R} with a properly chosen R. The deformed model enjoys the same supersymmetry algebra as the undeformed one, though being realized differently on the involved canonical variables. Besides quantum-mechanical models, we treat, along similar lines, some NAC deformed field models in 4D Minkowski space.

Renormalizability of non-anticommutative N=(1,1) theories with singlet deformation

We study the quantum properties of two theories with a non-anticommutative (or nilpotent) chiral singlet deformation of N=(1,1) supersymmetry: the abelian model of a vector gauge multiplet and the model of a gauge multiplet interacting with a neutral hypermultiplet. In spite of the presence of a negative-mass-dimension coupling constant (deformation parameter), both theories are shown to be finite in the sense that the full effective action is one-loop exact and contains finitely many divergent terms, which vanish on-shell. The beta-function for the coupling constant is equal to zero. The divergencies can all be removed off shell by a redefinition of one of the two scalar fields of the gauge multiplet. These notable quantum properties are tightly related to the existence of a Seiberg-Witten-type transformation in both models.

Non-Anticommutative Deformations of N=(1,1) Supersymmetric Theories

We discuss chirality-preserving nilpotent deformations of four-dimensional N=(1,1) Euclidean harmonic superspace and their implications in N=(1,1) supersymmetric gauge and hypermultiplet theories, basically following [hep-th/0308012] and [hep-th/0405049]. For the SO(4) x SU(2) invariant deformation, we present non-anticommutative Euclidean analogs of the N=2 gauge multiplet and hypermultiplet off-shell actions. As a new result, we consider a specific non-anticommutative hypermultiplet model with N=(1,0) supersymmetry. It involves free scalar fields and interacting right-handed spinor fields.

Complete Low-Energy Effective action in N=4 SYM: a Direct N=2 Supergraph Calculation

Using the covariant N=2 harmonic supergraph techniques we calculate the one-loop low-energy effective action of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb branch with gauge group SU(2) spontaneously broken down to U(1). The full dependence of the low-energy effective action on both the hypermultiplet and gauge fields is determined. The direct quantum calculation confirms the correctness of the exact N=4 SYM low-energy effective action derived in hep-th/0111062 on the purely algebraic ground by invoking a hidden N=2 supersymmetry which completes the manifest N=2 one to N=4. Our results provide an exhaustive solution to the problem of finding out the exact completely N=4 supersymmetric low-energy effective action for the theory under consideration.
