Nonequilibrium Theory of Photoinduced Valley Hall Effect

A recent scientific debate has arisen: Which processes underlie the actual ground of the valley Hall effect (VHE) in two-dimensional materials? The original VHE emerges in samples with ballistic transport of electrons due to the anomalous velocity terms resulting from the Berry phase effect. In disordered samples though, alternative mechanisms associated with electron scattering off impurities have been suggested: (i) asymmetric electron scattering, called skew scattering, and (ii) a shift of the electron wave packet in real space, called a side jump. It has been claimed that the side jump not only contributes to the VHE but fully offsets the anomalous terms regardless of the drag force for fundamental reasons and, thus, the side-jump together with skew scattering become the dominant mechanisms. However, this claim is based on equilibrium theories without any external valley-selective optical pumping, which makes the results fundamentally interesting but incomplete and impracticable. We develop in this paper a microscopic theory of the photoinduced VHE using the Keldysh nonequilibrium diagrammatic technique and find that the asymmetric skew scattering mechanism is dominant in the vicinity of the interband absorption edge. This allows us to explain the operation of optical transistors based on the VHE.

Acoustomagnetoelectric effect in two-dimensional materials: Geometric resonances and Weiss oscillations

We study electron transport in two-dimensional materials with parabolic and linear (graphene) dispersions of the carriers in the presence of surface acoustic waves and an external magnetic field using semiclassical Boltzmann equations approach. We observe an oscillatory behavior of both the longitudinal and Hall electric currents as functions of the surface acoustic wave frequency at a fixed magnetic field and as functions of the inverse magnetic field at a fixed frequency of the acoustic wave. We explain the former by the phenomenon of geometric resonances, while we relate the latter to the Weiss-like oscillations in the presence of the dynamic superlattice created by the acoustic wave. Thus we demonstrate the dual nature of the acoustomagnetoelectric effect in two-dimensional electron gas.

Coherent photogalvanic effect in fluctuating superconductors

We develop a theory of the coherent photogalvanic effect (CPGE) in low-dimensional superconductors in the fluctuating regime. It manifests itself in the appearance of a stationary electric current of Cooper pairs under the action of two coherent electromagnetic fields of light with frequencies lying in the sub-terahertz range. We derive the general formula for the electric current density, study the particular cases of linear and circular polarizations of the external light fields, and show that the current might have a non-monotonous spectrum at certain polarization angles and turns out very sensitive to the proximity of the ambient temperature to the critical temperature of superconducting transition: Approaching the critical temperature, the peak in the spectrum becomes narrower, its frequency experiences a redshift, and the intensity of the peak drastically grows.

Interplay between collective modes in hybrid electron gas-superconductor structures

We study hybridization of collective plasmon and Carlson-Goldman-Artemenko-Volkov modes in a hybrid system, consisting of a two-dimensional layers of electron gas in the normal state and superconductor, coupled by long-range Coulomb forces. The interaction between these collective modes is not possible in a regular single-layer two-dimensional system since they exist in non-overlapping domains of dimensionless parameter $ωτ$, where $ω$ is the external electromagnetic field frequency and $τ$ is electron scattering time. Thus, in a single-layer structure, these modes are mutually exclusive. However, the coupling may become possible in a hybrid system consisting of two separated in space materials with different properties, in particular, the electron scattering time. We investigate the electromagnetic power absorption by the hybrid system and reveal the conditions necessary for the hybridization of collective modes.

Partial quantum revivals of localized condensates in distorted lattices

We report on a peculiar propagation of bosons loaded by a short Laguerre-Gaussian pulse in a nearly flat band of a lattice potential. Taking a system of exciton-polaritons in a kagome lattice as an example, we show that an initially localized condensate propagates in a specific direction in space if anisotropy is taken into account. This propagation consists of quantum jumps, collapses, and revivals of the whole compact states, and it persists given any direction of anisotropy. This property reveals its signatures in the tight-binding model and, surprisingly, it is much more pronounced in a continuous model. Quantum revivals are robust to the repulsive interaction and finite lifetime of the particles. Since no magnetic field or spin-orbit interaction is required, this system provides a new kind of easily implementable optical logic.

Proposal for Plasmon Spectroscopy of Fluctuations in Low-Dimensional Superconductors

We propose to employ an optical spectroscopy technique to monitor the superconductivity and properties of superconductors in the fluctuating regime. This technique is operational close to the plasmon resonance frequency of the material, and it intimately connects with the superconducting fluctuations slightly above the critical temperature $T_c$. We find the Aslamazov-Larkin corrections to AC linear and DC nonlinear electric currents in a generic two-dimensional system exposed to an external longitudinal electromagnetic field. First, we study the plasmon resonance of normal electrons near $T_c$, taking into account their interaction with superconducting fluctuations, and show that fluctuating Cooper pairs reveal a redshift of the plasmon dispersion and an additional mechanism of plasmon scattering, which surpasses both the electron-impurity and the Landau dampings. Second, we demonstrate the emergence of a drag effect of superconducting fluctuations by the external field resulting in considerable, experimentally measurable corrections to the electric current in the vicinity of the plasmon resonance.

Ultrafast exciton-polariton scattering towards the Dirac points

Using the Feynman-Dyson diagram technique, we study nonlinear polariton-polariton scattering in a two-dimensional micropillar-based optical superlattice with hexagonal symmetry. We demonstrate that both the emerging polariton chirality and the loop Feynman diagrams up to infinite order should be strictly accounted for in the evaluation of the self-energy of the system. Further, we explicitly show that in such a design the time of polariton scattering towards the Dirac points can be drastically decreased which can be used, for instance, in engineering novel classes of polariton lasers with substantially reduced thresholds.

Collective state transitions of exciton-polaritons loaded into a periodic potential

We study the loading of a nonequilibrium, dissipative system of composite bosons -- exciton polaritons -- into a one dimensional periodic lattice potential. Utilizing momentum resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, we observe a transition between an incoherent Bose gas and a polariton condensate, which undergoes further transitions between different energy states in the band-gap spectrum of the periodic potential with increasing pumping power. We demonstrate controlled loading into distinct energy bands by modifying the size and shape of the excitation beam. The observed effects are comprehensively described in the framework of a nonequilibrium model of polariton condensation. In particular, we implement a stochastic treatment of quantum and thermal fluctuations in the system and confirm that polariton-phonon scattering is a key energy relaxation mechanism enabling transitions from the highly nonequilibrium polariton condensate in the gap to the ground band condensation for large pump powers.

Dissipative soliton protocols in semiconductor microcavities at finite temperatures

We consider exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity with a saturable absorber in the growth direction of the heterostructure. This feature promotes additional nonlinear losses of the system with the emergence of bistability of the condensate particles number on the nonresonant (electrical or optical) excitation intensity. Further we demonstrate a new type of bright spatial dissipative exciton-polariton soliton which emerges in the equilibrium between the regions with different particle density. We develop protocols of soliton creation and destruction. The switch to a soliton-like behavior occurs if the cavity is exposed by a short strong laser pulse with certain energy and duration. We estimate the characteristic times of soliton switch on and off and the time of return to the initial cycle. In particular, we demonstrate surprising narrowing of the spatial profile of the soliton and its vanishing at certain temperature due to interaction of the system with the thermal bath of acoustic phonons. We also address the role of polariton-polariton interaction (Kerr-like nonlinearity) on formation of dissipative solitons and show that the soliton may exist both in its presence and absence.

Fluctuations of work in nearly adiabatically driven open quantum systems

We extend the quantum jump method to nearly adiabatically driven open quantum systems in a way that allows for an accurate account of the external driving in the system-environment interaction. Using this framework, we construct the corresponding trajectory-dependent work performed on the system and derive the integral fluctuation theorem and the Jarzynski equality for nearly adiabatic driving. We show that such identities hold as long as the stochastic dynamics and work variable are consistently defined. We numerically study the emerging work statistics for a two-level quantum system and find that the conventional diabatic approximation is unable to capture some prominent features arising from driving such as the continuity of the probability density of work. Our results reveal the necessity of using accurate expressions for the drive-dressed heat exchange in future experiments probing jump time distributions.

Parity measurement of remote qubits using dispersive coupling and photodetection

Parity measurement is a key step in many entanglement generation and quantum error correction schemes. We propose a protocol for non-destructive parity measurement of two remote qubits, i.e., macroscopically separated qubits with no direct interaction. The qubits are instead dispersively coupled to separate resonators that radiate to shared photodetectors. The scheme is deterministic in the sense that there is no fundamental bound on the success probability. Compared to previous proposals, our protocol addresses the scenario where number resolving photodetectors are available but the qubit-resonator coupling is time-independent and only dispersive.

Quantum Treatment for Bose-Einstein Condensation in Non-Equilibrium Systems

We develop an approach based on stochastic quantum trajectories for an incoherently pumped system of interacting bosons relaxing their energy in a thermal reservoir. Our approach enables the study of the versatile coherence properties of the system. We apply the model to exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity. Our results demonstrate the onset of macroscopic occupation in the lowest-energy mode accompanied by the establishment of both temporal and spatial coherence. We show that temporal coherence exhibits a transition from a thermal to coherent statistics and the spatial coherence reveals off-diagonal long-range order.

Proposal for a Detector of Photons with Zero Projection of Spin

We suggest an indirect method of detection of photons with zero projection of spin mediated by emission of terahertz photons. This terahertz source is based on a system of microcavity exciton polaritons in the regime of polariton BEC formation when the cavity photons acquire an effective mass being localised in the cavity and therefore receive the third spin degree of freedom (corresponding to the longitudinal polarization with chirality l = 0). The optical transitions can occur between two polariton ground states based on the light-hole and heavy-hole excitons, respectively, accompanied by the emission of terahertz radiation with controllable characteristics. We calculate the dipole matrix element of such transitions and corresponding rate of spontaneous emission for a realistic cavity based on InAlGaAs alloys, investigate its dynamics and estimate quantum efficiency of the terahertz source.

Spatial Coherence Properties of One-Dimensional Exciton-Polariton-Condensates

In this work, we combine a systematic experimental investigation of the power- and temperaturedependent evolution of the spatial coherence function, g(1) (r), in a one-dimensional excitonpolariton channel with a modern microscopic numerical theory based on a stochastic master equation approach. The spatial coherence function g(1) (r) is extracted via high-precision Michelson interferometry, which allows us to demonstrate that in the regime of non-resonant excitation, the dependence g(1) (r) reaches a saturation value with a plateau, determined by the intensity of pump and effective temperature of the crystal lattice. The theory, which was extended to allow for treating incoherent excitation in a stochastic frame, matches the experimental data with good qualitative and quantitative agreement. This allows us to verify the prediction that the decay of the off-diagonal long range order can be almost fully suppressed in one-dimensional condensate systems.

An exciton-polariton mediated all-optical router

We propose an all-optical nonlinear router based on a double barrier gate connected to periodically modulated guides. A semiconductor microcavity is driven nonresonantly in-between the barriers to form an exciton-polariton condensate on a discrete state that is subject to the exciton blueshift. The subsequent coherent optical signal is allowed to propagate through a guide provided that the condensate energy is resonant with a miniband or is blocked if it faces a gap. While a symmetric sample operates as an optical switch, its asymmetric counterpart embodies a router turned to be polarization selective under applied magnetic field.

Density-matrix approach for an interacting polariton system

Using the Lindblad approach we develop a general formalism for theoretical description of a spatially inhomogeneous bosonic system with dissipation provided by the interaction of bosons with a phonon bath. We apply our results to model the dynamics of an interacting one-dimensional polariton system in real space and time, analyzing in detail the role of polariton-polariton and polariton-phonon interactions.

Giant Rabi splitting in metallic cluster-cavity system

We investigate theoretically the photo absorbtion of the cluster of alkali atoms embedded into a single mode quantum microcavity. We show that when the energy of the giant plasmonic resonance lies close to the energy of the cavity mode, the strong coupling between plasmon and cavity photon can occur, which is characterized by mode anticrossing and observation of the doublet structure in ptotoabsorbtion. The characteristic values of the Rabi splitting are expected to be several orders of magnitude larger then those observed in single quantum dot-cavity systems.

Nonlinear Effects in Multi-Photon Polaritonics

We consider theoretically nonlinear effects in a semiconductor quantum well embedded inside a photonic microcavity. Two-photon absorption by a 2p exciton state is considered and investigated; the matrix element of two-photon absorption is calculated. We compute the emission spectrum of the sample and demonstrate that under coherent pumping the nonlinearity of the two photon absorption process gives rise to bistability.

Nonlinear Terahertz Emission in Semiconductor Microcavities

We consider the nonlinear terahertz emission by the system of cavity polaritons in the regime of polariton lasing. To account for the quantum nature of terahertz-polariton coupling we use the Lindblad master equation approach and demonstrate that quantum microcavities reveal rich variety of the nonlinear phenomena in terahertz range, including bistability, short THz pulse generation and THz switching.

Phase diagrams of magnetopolariton gases

The magnetic field effect on phase transitions in electrically neutral bosonic systems is much less studied than those in fermionic systems, such as superconducting or ferromagnetic phase transitions. Nevertheless, composite bosons are strongly sensitive to magnetic fields: both their internal structure and motion as whole particles may be affected. A joint effort of ten laboratories has been focused on studies of polariton lasers, where non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates of bosonic quasiparticles, exciton-polaritons, may appear or disappear under an effect of applied magnetic fields. Polariton lasers based on pillar or planar microcavities were excited both optically and electrically. In all cases a pronounced dependence of the onset to lasing on the magnetic field has been observed. For the sake of comparison, photon lasing (lasing by an electron-hole plasma) in the presence of a magnetic field has been studied on the same samples as polariton lasing. The threshold to photon lasing is essentially governed by the excitonic Mott transition which appears to be sensitive to magnetic fields too. All the observed experimental features are qualitatively described within a uniform model based on coupled diffusion equations for electrons, holes and excitons and the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for exciton-polariton condensates. Our research sheds more light on the physics of non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates and the results manifest high potentiality of polariton lasers for spin-based quantum logic applications.

Rashba plasmon polaritons in semiconductor heterostructures

We propose a concept of surface plasmon-polariton amplification in the structure comprising interface between dielectric, metal and asymmetric quantum well. Due to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, mimina of dispersion relation for electrons in conduction band are shifted with respect to the maximum of dispersion dependence for holes in $Γ$-point. When energy and momentum intervals between extrema in dispersion relations of electrons and holes match dispersion relation of plasmons, indirect radiative transition can amplify the plasmons; excitation of leaky modes is forbidden due to the selection rules. Efficiency of the indirect radiative transition is calculated and design of the structure is analysed.

Spin multistability in dissipative polariton channels

We present a model for theoretical description of the dynamics of a system of spinor cavity polaritons in real space and time accounting for all relevant types of the interactions and effective magnetic fields. We apply our general formalism for the consideration of the polarization dynamics of the coherently driven one dimensional polariton channel. We investigate effect of the temperature and the longitudinal-transverse splitting on the spin (polarization) multistability and hysteresis arising from the polarization-dependent polariton-polariton interaction. We show that the effect of the phase of the driving laser pump is as important as its strength and demonstrate that the multistability behavior can survive up to high temperatures in presence of longitudinal-transverse splitting.

Spin transport in Aharonov-Bohm ring with exchange interaction

We investigate spin-dependent conductance through a quantum Aharonov-Bohm ring containing localized electrons which interact with the propagating flow of electrons via exchange interaction of the ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic type. We analyze the conductance oscillations as a function of both the chemical potential determined by the concentration of the carriers and external magnetic field. It is demonstrated that the amplitude of the conductance oscillations in the ballistic regime is governed by the value of the non-compensated spin localized in the ring. The results are in agreement with the concept of fractional quantization of the ballistic conductance, proposed by us earlier [Phys. Rev. B 71,113311 (2005)].

Stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii Equation for the Dynamical Thermalization of Bose-Einstein Condensates

We present a theory for the description of energy relaxation in a nonequilibrium condensate of bosonic particles. The approach is based on coupling to a thermal bath of other particles (e.g., phonons in a crystal, or noncondensed atoms in a cold atom system), which are treated with a Monte Carlo type approach. Together with a full account of particle-particle interactions, dynamic driving, and particle loss, this offers a complete description of recent experiments in which Bose-Einstein condensates are seen to relax their energy as they propagate in real space and time. As an example, we apply the theory to the solid-state system of microcavity exciton polaritons, in which nonequilibrium effects are particularly prominent.

Asymmetric quantum dot in microcavity as a nonlinear optical element

We have investigated theoretically the interaction between individual quantum dot with broken inversion symmetry and electromagnetic field of a single-mode quantum microcavity. It is shown that in the strong coupling regime the system demonstrates nonlinear optical properties and can serve as emitter of the terahertz radiation at Rabi frequency of the system. Analytical results for simplest physical situations are obtained and numerical quantum approach for calculating emission spectrum is developed.
