1/2-BPS membrane instantons in AdS$_4 \times$S$^7 / \mathbf{Z}_k$

According to the covariant open superstring description of D-branes in the AdS$_4 \times \mathbf{CP}^3$ background, 1/2-BPS D2-branes are purely instantonic. Based on this and by taking the eleven dimensional viewpoint, we identify the 1/2-BPS instantonic M2-brane configurations in the AdS$_4 \times$ S$^7 / \mathbf{Z}_k$ background, which reduces to the AdS$_4 \times \mathbf{CP}^3$ under the large $k$ limit, and evaluate their action values. We also consider the previously known 1/2-BPS instantonic objects in ten dimensions from the M2-brane viewpoint to compare with our results.

Holographic Entanglement Entropy of Mass-deformed ABJM Theory

We investigate the effect of supersymmetry preserving mass deformation near the UV fixed point represented by the ${\cal N}=6$ ABJM theory. In the context of the gauge/gravity duality, we analytically calculate the leading small mass effect on the renormalized entanglement entropy (REE) for the most general Lin-Lunin-Maldacena (LLM) geometries in the cases of the strip and disk shaped entangling surfaces. Our result shows that the properties of the REE in (2+1)-dimensions are consistent with those of the $c$-function in (1+1)-dimensions. We also discuss the validity of our computations in terms of the curvature behavior of the LLM geometry in the large $N$ limit and the relation between the correlation length and the mass parameter for a special LLM solution.

Surface/state correspondence and bulk local operators in pp-wave holography

We apply the surface/state correspondence proposal of Miyaji et al. to IIB pp-waves and propose that the bulk local operators should be D-instantons. In line with ordinary AdS/CFT correspondence, the bulk local operators in pp-waves also create a hole, or a boundary, in the dual gauge theory as pointed out by H. Verlinde, and by Y. Nakayama and H. Ooguri. We also present simple calculations which illustrate how to extract the spacetime metric from D-instanton states.

No pair production of open strings in a plane-wave background

We consider whether an external electric field may cause the pair production of open strings in a type IIA plane-wave background. The boundary states of D-branes with condensates are constructed in the Green-Schwarz formulation of superstring theory with the light-cone gauge. The cylinder diagrams are computed with massive theta functions. Although the value of the electric field is bounded by the upper value, there is no pole in the amplitudes and it indicates that no pair production occurs in the plane-wave background. This result would be universal for a class of plane-wave backgrounds.

Renormalized Entanglement Entropy Flow in Mass-deformed ABJM Theory

We investigate a mass deformation effect on the renormalized entanglement entropy (REE) near the UV fixed point in (2+1)-dimensional field theory. In the context of the gauge/gravity duality, we use the Lin-Lunin-Maldacena (LLM) geometries corresponding to the vacua of the mass-deformed ABJM theory. We analytically compute the small mass effect for various droplet configurations and show in holographic point of view that the REE is monotonically decreasing, positive, and stationary at the UV fixed point. These properties of the REE in (2+1)-dimensions are consistent with the Zamolodchikov $c$-function proposed in (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory.

Complete type IIA superstring action on IIA plane wave background

We construct the type IIA Green-Schwarz superstring action on a ten-dimensional IIA plane wave background with 24 supersymmetries keeping the full 32 fermionic coordinates. Starting from the symmetry superalgebra for the maximally supersymmetric eleven dimensional plane wave background, we obtain the eleven dimensional superfields. The Kaluza-Klein reduction leads to the ten dimensional superfields for the IIA plane wave background, from which the type IIA superstring action is constructed. We show that the superstring action reduces correctly to the previously known light-cone gauge fixed action upon imposing the light-cone $κ$-symmetry fixing condition.

Consistent bilinear Wess-Zumino term for open AdS superstring

We consider the open superstring action in AdS_5 x S^5 background with the bilinear Wess-Zumino term, which has been modified in such a way that a certain total derivative term is absent, and give the covariant description of supersymmetric D-branes. We show that the modification of bilinear Wess-Zumino term is necessary to describe correctly the 1/2-BPS D(-1)-brane in AdS_5 x S^5 background, while the classification of other supersymmetric D-branes does not depend on such modification.

Fermionic T-duality and Morita Equivalence

In this paper we investigate the relationship between the so-called fermionic T-duality and the Morita equivalence of noncommutative supertori. We first get an action satisfying the BRST invariance under nonvanishing constant R-R and NS-NS backgrounds in the hybrid formalism. We investigate the effect of bosonic T-duality transformation together with fermionic T-duality transformation in this background and look for the resultant symmetry of transformations. We find that the duality transformations correspond to Morita equivalence of noncommutative supertori. In particular, we obtain the symmetry group $SO(2,2,{\cal V}_{\Z}^0)$ in two dimensions, where ${\cal V}_{\Z}^0$ denotes Grassmann even number whose body part belongs to ${\Z}$.

Probing Smearing Effect by Point-Like Graviton in Plane-Wave Matrix Model

We investigate the interaction between flat membrane and point-like graviton in the plane-wave matrix model. The one-loop effective potential in the large distance limit is computed and is shown to be of r^{-3} type where r is the distance between two objects. This type of interaction has been interpreted as the one incorporating the smearing effect due to the configuration of flat membrane in plane-wave background. Our result supports this interpretation and provides one more evidence about it.

Semiclassical Analysis of M2-brane in AdS_4 x S^7 / Z_k

We start from the classical action describing a single M2-brane on AdS_4 x S^7/ Z_k and consider semiclassical fluctuaitions around a static, 1/2 BPS configuration whose shape is AdS_2 x S^1. The internal manifold S^7/ Z_k is described as a U(1) fibration over CP^3 and the static configuration is wrapped on the U(1) fiber. Then the configuration is reduced to an AdS_2 world-sheet of type IIA string on AdS_4 x CP^3 through the Kaluza-Klein reduction on the S^1. It is shown that the fluctuations form an infinite set of N=1 supermultiplets on AdS_2, for k=1,2. The set is invariant under SO(8) which may be consistent with N=8 supersymmetry on AdS_2. We discuss the behavior of the fluctuations around the boundary of AdS_2 and its relation to deformations of Wilson loop operator.

Membrane Fuzzy Sphere Dynamics in Plane-Wave Matrix Model

In plane-wave matrix model, the membrane fuzzy sphere extended in the SO(3) symmetric space is allowed to have periodic motion on a sub-plane in the SO(6) symmetric space. We consider a background configuration composed of two such fuzzy spheres moving on the same sub-plane and the one-loop quantum corrections to it. The one-loop effective action describing the fuzzy sphere interaction is computed up to the sub-leading order in the limit that the mean distance $r$ between two fuzzy spheres is very large. We show that the leading order interaction is of the 1/r^7 type and thus the membrane fuzzy spheres interpreted as giant gravitons really behave as gravitons.

Thermodynamics of Fuzzy Spheres in PP-wave Matrix Model

We discuss thermodynamics of fuzzy spheres in a matrix model on a pp-wave background. The exact free energy in the fuzzy sphere vacuum is computed in the μ-> \infty limit for an arbitrary matrix size N. The trivial vacuum dominates the fuzzy sphere vacuum at low temperature while the fuzzy sphere vacuum is more stable than the trivial vacuum at sufficiently high temperature. Our result supports that the fluctuations around the trivial vacuum would condense to form an irreducible fuzzy sphere above a certain temperature.

Covariant Description of D-branes in IIA Plane-Wave Background

We work out boundary conditions for the covariant open string in the type IIA plane wave background, which corresponds to the D-branes in the type IIA theory. We use the kappa symmetric string action and see what kind of boundary conditions should be imposed to retain kappa symmetry. We find half BPS as well as quarter BPS branes and the analysis agrees with the previous work in the light cone gauge if the result is available. Finally we find that D0-brane is non-supersymmetric.

One-Loop Flatness of Membrane Fuzzy Sphere Interaction in Plane-Wave Matrix Model

In the plane-wave matrix model, the background configuration of two membrane fuzzy spheres, one of which rotates around the other one in the SO(6) symmetric space, is allowed as a classical solution. We study the one-loop quantum corrections to this background in the path integral formulation. Firstly, we show that each fuzzy sphere is stable under the quantum correction. Secondly, the effective potential describing the interaction between fuzzy spheres is obtained as a function of r, which is the distance between two fuzzy spheres. It is shown that the effective potential is flat and hence the fuzzy spheres do not feel any force. The possibility on the existence of flat directions is discussed.

Partition Function and Open/Closed String Duality in Type IIA String Theory on a PP-wave

We discuss partition functions of N=(4,4) type IIA string theory on the pp-wave background. This theory is shown to be modular invariant. The boundary states are constructed and possible D-brane instantons are classified. Then we calculate cylinder amplitudes in both closed and open string descriptions and check the open/closed string duality. Furthermore we consider general properties of modular invariant partition functions in the case of pp-waves.

Solvable N=(4,4) Type IIA String Theory in Plane-Wave Background and D-Branes

We study various aspects of N=(4,4) type IIA GS superstring theory in the pp-wave background, which arises as the compactification of maximally supersymmetric eleven-dimensional pp-wave geometry along the spacelike isometry direction. We show the supersymmetry algebra of N=(4,4) worldsheet supersymmetry as well as non-linearly realized supersymmetry. We also give quantization of closed string and open string incorporating various boundary conditions. From the open string boundary conditions, we find configurations of D-branes which preserve half the supersymmetries. Among these we identify D4 brane configurations with longitudinal five brane configurations in matrix model on the eleven-dimensional pp-wave geometry.

Eleven-dimensional massless superparticles and matrix theory spin-orbit couplings revisited

The classical probe dynamics of the eleven-dimensional massless superparticles in the background geometry produced by N source M-momenta is investigated in the framework of N-sector DLCQ supergravity. We expand the probe action up to the two fermion terms and find that the fermionic contributions are the spin-orbit couplings, which precisely agree with the matrix theory calculations. We comment on the lack of non-perturbative corrections in the one-loop matrix quantum mechanics effective action and its compatibility with the supergravity analysis.

Non-perturbative membrane spin-orbit couplings in M/IIA theory

Membrane source-probe dynamics is investigated in the framework of the finite N-sector DLCQ M theory compactified on a transverse two-torus for an arbitrary size of the longitudinal dimension. The non-perturbative two fermion terms in the effective action of the matrix theory, the (2+1)-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, that are related to the four derivative F^4 terms by the supersymmetry transformation are obtained, including the one-loop term and full instanton corrections. On the supergravity side, we compute the classical probe action up to two fermion terms based on the classical supermembrane formulation in an arbitrary curved background geometry produced by source membranes satisfying the BPS condition; two fermion terms correspond to the spin-orbit couplings for membranes. We find precise agreement between two approaches when the background space-time is chosen to be that of the DLCQ M theory, which is asymptotically locally Anti-de Sitter.
