1/2-BPS membrane instantons in AdS$_4 \times$S$^7 / \mathbf{Z}_k$

According to the covariant open superstring description of D-branes in the AdS$_4 \times \mathbf{CP}^3$ background, 1/2-BPS D2-branes are purely instantonic. Based on this and by taking the eleven dimensional viewpoint, we identify the 1/2-BPS instantonic M2-brane configurations in the AdS$_4 \times$ S$^7 / \mathbf{Z}_k$ background, which reduces to the AdS$_4 \times \mathbf{CP}^3$ under the large $k$ limit, and evaluate their action values. We also consider the previously known 1/2-BPS instantonic objects in ten dimensions from the M2-brane viewpoint to compare with our results.

6d strings and exceptional instantons

We propose new ADHM-like methods to compute the Coulomb branch instanton partition functions of 5d and 6d supersymmetric gauge theories, with certain exceptional gauge groups or exceptional matters. We study $G_2$ theories with $n_{\bf 7}\leq 3$ matters in ${\bf 7}$, and $SO(7)$ theories with $n_{\bf 8}\leq 4$ matters in the spinor representation ${\bf 8}$. We also study the elliptic genera of self-dual instanton strings of 6d SCFTs with exceptional gauge groups or matters, including all non-Higgsable atomic SCFTs with rank $2$ or $3$ tensor branches. Some of them are tested with topological vertex calculus. We also explore a D-brane-based method to study instanton particles of 5d $SO(7)$ and $SO(8)$ gauge theories with matters in spinor representations, which further tests our ADHM-like proposals.

6d strings from new chiral gauge theories

We study the 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ superconformal field theory with smallest non-Higgsable gauge symmetry $SU(3)$. In particular, we propose new 2d gauge theory descriptions of its self-dual strings in the tensor branch. We use our gauge theories to compute the elliptic genera of the self-dual strings, which completely agree with the partial data known from topological strings. We further study the strings of the $(E_6,E_6)$ conformal matter by generalizing our 2d gauge theories. We also show that anomalies of all our gauge theories agree with the self-dual string anomalies computed by inflows from 6d.

Factorization of the 3d superconformal index with an adjoint matter

We work out the factorization of the 3d superconformal index for N = 2 $U(N_c)$ gauge theory withone adjoint chiral multiplet as well as $N_f$ fundamental, $N_a$ anti-fundamental chiral multiplets. Using the factorization, one can prove the Seiberg-like duality for N = 4 $U(N_c)$ theory with $N_f$ hypermultiplets at the index level. We explicitlyshow that monopole operators violating unitarity bound in a bad theory are mapped to free hypermultiplets in the dual side. For N = 2 $U(N_c)$ theory with one adjoint matter $X$, $N_f$ fundamental, $N_a$ anti-fundamental chiral multiplets with superpotential $W = tr X^{n+1}$, we work out Seiberg-like duality for this theory. The index computation provides combinatorial identities for a dual pair, which we carry out intensive numerical checks.

General instanton counting and 5d SCFT

Instanton partition functions of 5d N=1 gauge theories are Witten indices for the ADHM gauged quantum mechanics with (0,4) SUSY. We derive the integral contour prescriptions for these indices using the Jeffrey-Kirwan method, for gauge theories with hypermultiplets in various representations. The results can be used to study various 4d/5d/6d QFTs. In this paper, we study 5d SCFTs which are at the UV fixed points of 5d SYM theories. In particular, we focus on the Sp(N) theories with N_f \leq 7 fundamental and 1 antisymmetric hypermultiplets, living on the D4-D8-O8 systems. Their superconformal indices calculated from instantons all show E_{N_f+1} symmetry enhancements. We also discuss some aspects of the 6d SCFTs living on the M5-M9 system. It is crucial to understand the UV incompleteness of the 5d SYM, coming from small instantons in our problem. We explain in our examples how to fix them. As an aside, we derive the index for general gauged quantum mechanics with (0,2) SUSY.

Hilbert Series for Theories with Aharony Duals

The algebraic structure of moduli spaces of 3d N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories is studied by computing the Hilbert series which is a generating function that counts gauge invariant operators in the chiral ring. These U(N_c) theories with N_f flavors have Aharony duals and their moduli spaces receive contributions from both mesonic and monopole operators. In order to compute the Hilbert series, recently developed techniques for Coulomb branch Hilbert series in 3d N=4 are extended to 3d N=2. The Hilbert series computation leads to a general expression of the algebraic variety which represents the moduli space of the U(N_c) theory with N_f flavors and its Aharony dual theory. A detailed analysis of the moduli space is given, including an analysis of the various components of the moduli space.

Super-Yang-Mills theories on S4 x R

We construct super-Yang-Mills theories on S4 x R, S4 x S1 and S4 x interval with the field content of maximal SYM, coupled to boundary degrees in the last case. These theories provide building blocks of the `5d uplifts' of gauge theories on S4, obtained by compactifying the 6d (2,0) theory. We pay special attention to the N=2* theory on S4. We also explain how to construct maximal SYM on S5 x R, and clarify when SYM theories can be put on S^n x R.

Aharony Dualities for 3d Theories with Adjoint Matter

We study Aharony dualities for 3d N=2 gauge theories of classical gauge group with one adjoint and fundamental matters. We work out the 3d superconformal index for the dual pairs to find the perfect matchings. Along with it, we enumerate the independent monopole operators parametrizing the Coulomb branches and confirm the nonperturbative truncation of the chiral rings, consistent with the proposed dualities.

Factorization of the 3d superconformal index

We prove that 3d superconformal index for general $\mathcal N=2$ U(N) gauge group with fundamentals and anti-fundmentals with/without Chern-Simons terms is factorized into vortex and anti-vortex partition function. We show that for simple cases, 3d vortex partition function coincides with a suitable topological open string partition function. We provide much more elegant derivation at the index level for $\mathcal N=2$ Seiberg-like dualities of unitary gauge groups with fundamantal matters and $\mathcal N=4$ mirror symmetry

Superconformal Index and 3d-3d Correspondence for Mapping Cylinder/Torus

We probe the 3d-3d correspondence for mapping cylinder/torus using the superconformal index. We focus on the case when the fiber is a once-punctured torus (Σ_{1,1}). The corresponding 3d field theories can be realized using duality domain wall theories in 4d N=2* theory. We show that the superconformal indices of the 3d theories are the SL(2,C) Chern-Simons partition function on the mapping cylinder/torus. For the mapping torus, we also consider another realization of the corresponding 3d theory associated with ideal triangulation. The equality between the indices from the two descriptions for the mapping torus theory is reduced to a basis change of the Hilbert space for the SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory on RxΣ_{1,1}.

Complete type IIA superstring action on IIA plane wave background

We construct the type IIA Green-Schwarz superstring action on a ten-dimensional IIA plane wave background with 24 supersymmetries keeping the full 32 fermionic coordinates. Starting from the symmetry superalgebra for the maximally supersymmetric eleven dimensional plane wave background, we obtain the eleven dimensional superfields. The Kaluza-Klein reduction leads to the ten dimensional superfields for the IIA plane wave background, from which the type IIA superstring action is constructed. We show that the superstring action reduces correctly to the previously known light-cone gauge fixed action upon imposing the light-cone $κ$-symmetry fixing condition.

Duality between N=5 and N=6 Chern-Simons matter theory

We provide evidences for the duality between ${\cal N}=6$ $U(M)_{4} \times U(N)_{-4}$ Chern-Simons matter theory and ${\cal N}=5$ $O(\hat{M})_{2} \times USp(2\hat{N})_{-1}$ theory for a suitable $\hat{M},\hat{N}$ by working out the superconformal index, which shows perfect matching. For ${\cal N}=5$ theories, we show that supersymmetry is enhanced to ${\cal N}=6$ by explicitly constructing monopole operators filling in $SO(6)_R$ $R$-currents. Finally we work out the large $N$ index of $O(2N)_{2k} \times USp(2N)_{-k}$ and show that it exactly matches with the gravity index on $AdS_4 \times S^7/D_k$, which further provides additional evidence for the duality between the ${\cal N}=5$ and ${\cal N}=6$ theory for $k=1$

Ab Initio Wall-Crossing

We derive supersymmetric quantum mechanics of n BPS objects with 3n position degrees of freedom and 4n fermionic partners with SO(4) R-symmetry. The potential terms, essential and sufficient for the index problem for non-threshold BPS states, are universal, and 2(n-1) dimensional classical moduli spaces M_n emerge from zero locus of the potential energy. We emphasize that there is no natural reduction of the quantum mechanics to M_n, contrary to the conventional wisdom. Nevertheless, via an index-preserving deformation that breaks supersymmetry partially, we derive a Dirac index on M_n as the fundamental state counting quantity. This rigorously fills a missing link in the "Coulomb phase" wall-crossing formula in literature. We then impose Bose/Fermi statistics of identical centers, and derive the general wall-crossing formula, applicable to both BPS black holes and BPS dyons. Also explained dynamically is how the rational invariant ~Ω(β)/p^2, appearing repeatedly in wall-crossing formulae, can be understood as the universal multiplicative factor due to p identical, coincident, yet unbound, BPS particles of charge β. Along the way, we also clarify relationships between field theory state countings and quantum mechanical indices.

Annulus amplitude of FZZT branes revisited

We revisit the annulus amplitude of FZZT branes with general matter sectors (r,s) using the recent development of matrix model and minimal Liouville gravity. Following the boundary description of the 1-matrix model and bulk resonance transformation between primary operators we find the consistency of the brane decomposition into (1,1)-branes. We also investigate the corresponding results obtained directly from the minimal Liouville gravity and demonstrate the perfect agreement with the matrix results.

Dualities for 3d Theories with Tensor Matter

We study dualities for ${\cal N}=2$ 3d Chern-Simons matter theories with gauge groups U/Sp/O, matter in the two-index tensor representations (adjoint/symmetric/antisymmetric) in addition to the fundamental representation, and a superpotential. These dualities are analogous to Kutasov-Schwimmer-Seiberg dualities in 4d. We test them by computing the superconformal index and the partition function on $S^3$ for many dual pairs and find perfect agreement. In some cases we find a simple dual description for theories with tensor matter and no superpotential, thereby generalizing the "Duality Appetizer" of Jafferis and Yin to an infinite class of theories. We also investigate nonperturbative truncation of the chiral ring proposed in the context of 4d dualities.

Emergent Schrodinger geometries from mass-deformed CFT

We study an M-theory solution for the holographic flow of AdS4 times Sasaki-Einstein 7-manifolds with skew-whiffing, perturbed by a mass operator. The infrared solution contains the 5 dimensional Schrodinger geometry after considering the gravity dual of the standard non-relativistic limit of relativistic field theories. The mass deformation of the field theory is discussed in detail for the case with 7 manifold being a round sphere.

Refined test of AdS4/CFT3 correspondence for N=2,3 theories

We investigate the superconformal indices for the Chern-Simons-matter theories proposed for M2-branes probing the cones over N^{010}/Z_k, Q^{111}, M^{32} with N=2,3 supersymmetries and compare them with the corresponding dual gravity indices. For N^{010}, we find perfect agreements. In addition, for N^{010}/Z_k, we also find an agreement with the gravity index including the contributions from two types of D6-branes wrapping RP^3. For Q^{111}, we find that the model obtained by adding fundamental flavors to the N=6 theory has the right structure to be the correct model. For M^{32}, we find the matching with the gravity index modulo contributions from peculiar saddle points.

AGT on the S-duality Wall

Three-dimensional gauge theory T[G] arises on a domain wall between four-dimensional N=4 SYM theories with the gauge groups G and its S-dual G^L. We argue that the N=2^* mass deformation of the bulk theory induces a mass-deformation of the theory T[G] on the wall. The partition functions of the theory T[SU(2)] and its mass-deformation on the three-sphere are shown to coincide with the transformation coefficient of Liouville one-point conformal block on torus under the S-duality.

Probing AdS4/CFT3 proposals beyond chiral rings

We calculate the superconformal Witten index for the Chern-Simons-matter theory which was proposed to describe multiple M2-branes on $C^2 X C^2/Z_k$. We consider a variant of this model, which exhibits explicit N=3 supersymmetry and has the advantage of not having an exotic branch of the moduli space. At $k=1$, we compare the index with that from the proposed gravity dual and find a disagreement.

The BPS spectrum of monopole operators in ABJM: towards a field theory description of the giant torus

We study the BPS spectrum of monopole operators in ABJM theory. First we work out the complete spectrum of the chiral ring by using a semiclassical analysis of the field theory compactified on a two sphere. By properly taking into account the full quantization condition of monopole charges, we show that the moduli space of ABJM theory with Chern-Simons level k, -k is a particular Z_k cover of the symmetric product of C^4/Z_k. We also work out in detail the spectrum of fluctuations around half-BPS monopole configurations and we find candidate states for a dual BPS configuration to the giant torus solution found by Nishioka and Takayanagi in the supergravity limit. We also discuss more general BPS states.

Heterotic Action in SUGRA-SYM Background

We consider the generalization of the heterotic action considered by Cherkis and Schwarz where the chiral bosons are introduced in a manifestly covariant way using an auxiliary field. In particular, we construct the kappa-symmetric heterotic action in ten-dimensional supergravity background coupled to super Yang-Mills theory and prove its kappa-symmetry. The usual Bianchi identity of Type I supergravity with super Yang-Mills $dH_3= -\tr F\wedge F$ is crucially used. For technical reason, the Yang-Mills field is restricted to be abelian.

A Holographic QCD and Excited Baryons from String Theory

We study baryons of arbitrary isospin in a stringy holographic QCD model. In this D4-D8 holographic setting, the flavor symmetry is promoted to a gauge symmetry in the bulk, and produces, as KK modes of the gauge field, pions and spin one mesons of low energy QCD. Baryons of arbitrary isospins are represented as instanton solitons with isospin and spin quantum numbers locked, in a manner similar to the Skyrmion model. The soliton picture leads to a natural effective field theory of arbitrary baryons interacting with mesons. Couplings of baryons to axial mesons, including pions, are dominated in the large $N_c$ limit by a direct coupling to the flavor field strength in five dimensions. We delineate the relevant couplings and determine their strengths. This work generalizes part of hep-th/0701276 and arXiv:0705.2632 [hep-th] to all excited baryons. Due to technical difficulties in introducing relativistic higher spin fields, we perform all computations in the nonrelativistic regime, which suffices for the leading $N_c$ predictions.

A Nonperturbative Test of M2-Brane Theory

We discuss non-perturbative effects in the ABJM model due to monopole instantons. We begin by constructing the instanton solutions in the $U(2)\times U(2)$ model, explicitly, and computing the Euclidean action. The Wick-rotated Lagrangian is complex and its BPS monopole instantons are found to be a delicate version of the usual 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole solutions. They are generically 1/3 BPS but become 1/2 BPS at special locus in the moduli space of two M2-branes, yet each instanton carries eight fermionic zero modes, regardless of the vacuum choice. The low energy effective action induced by monopole instantons are quartic order in derivatives. The resulting vertices are nonperturbative in $1/k$, as expected, but are rational functions of the vacuum moduli. We also analyze the system of two M2-branes in the supergravity framework and compute the higher order interactions via 11-dimensional supergraviton exchange. The comparison of the two shows that the instanton vertices are precisely reproduced by this M2-brane picture, supporting the proposal that the ABJM model describes multiple M2-branes.

D-instanton derivation of multi-fermion F-terms in supersymmetric QCD

We investigate effects of field theory instantons by considering D-instantons in a suitable D3-brane background. In supersymmetric QCD with SU(N_c) gauge group with N_f=N_c flavors, the moduli space of vacua is deformed by instantons. This effect can be described by the chiral interactions which are called multi-fermion F-terms. We derive these chiral interaction terms as D-instanton effects in the presence of D3-branes. For SU(2), the obtained result agrees with the previous result worked out by Beasley and Witten [hep-th/0409149]. We also explicitly work out those for the case of the symplectic gauge group, and show that they describe the deformation of the moduli space.

N=4 Superconformal Chern-Simons Theories with Hyper and Twisted Hyper Multiplets

We extend the N=4 superconformal Chern-Simons theories of Gaiotto and Witten to those with additional twisted hyper-multiplets. The new theories are generically linear quiver gauge theories with the two types of hyper-multiplets alternating between gauge groups. Our construction includes the Bagger-Lambert model of SO(4) gauge group. A family of abelian theories are identified with those proposed earlier in the context of the M-crystal model for M2-branes probing (C^2/Z_n)^2 orbifolds. Possible extension with non-abelian BF couplings and string/M-theory realization are briefly discussed.

A note on D-brane Interactions in the IIA Plane-Wave Background

We compute the D-brane tensions in the type IIA plane-wave background by comparing the interaction potential between widely separated D-branes in string theory with the supergravity mode exchange between the D-branes. We found that the D-brane tensions and RR charges in the plane-wave background are the same as those in the flat space. Also we work out the stringy halo behavior of the $DpD\bar{p}$ spacelike branes and find the explicit dependence on the light cone separation $r^+$. This suggests that the detailed tachyon dynamics for the spacelike $DpD\bar{p}$ branes are different from those in the flat space case. We also discuss specific features of the exchange amplitudes in relation to the geometric properties of the IIA plane wave background. When branes are located at focal points, full or partial restoration of the translation invariance occurs and the amplitudes are similar to those in the flat space.

D3 instantons in Calabi-Yau orientifolds with(out) fluxes

We investigate the instanton effect due to D3 branes wrapping a four-cycle in a Calabi-Yau orientifold with D7 branes. We study the condition for the nonzero superpotentials from the D3 instantons. For that matter we work out the zero mode structures of D3 branes wrapping a four-cycle both in the presence of the fluxes and in the absence of the fluxes. In the presence of the fluxes, the condition for the nonzero superpotential could be different from that without the fluxes. We explicitly work out a simple example of the orientifold of $K3 \times T^2/Z_2$ with a suitable flux to show such behavior. The effects of D3-D7 sectors are interesting and give further constraints for the nonzero superpotential. In a special configuration where D3 branes and D7 branes wrap the same four-cycle, multi-instanton calculus of D3 branes could be reduced to that of a suitable field theory. The structure of D5 instantons in Type I theory is briefly discussed.

Boundary States in IIA Plane-Wave Background

We work out boundary states for Type IIA string theory on a plane wave background. By directly utilizing the channel duality, the induced conditions from the open string boundary conditions are imposed on the boundary states. The resulting boundary states correctly reproduce the partition functions of the open string theory for $DpDp$ and $DpD\bar{p}$ cases where $Dp$ branes are half BPS brane if located at the origin of the plane wave background.

Covariant Description of D-branes in IIA Plane-Wave Background

We work out boundary conditions for the covariant open string in the type IIA plane wave background, which corresponds to the D-branes in the type IIA theory. We use the kappa symmetric string action and see what kind of boundary conditions should be imposed to retain kappa symmetry. We find half BPS as well as quarter BPS branes and the analysis agrees with the previous work in the light cone gauge if the result is available. Finally we find that D0-brane is non-supersymmetric.

Black Hole Solutions of Kaluza-Klein Supergravity Theories and String Theory

We find U(1)_{E} \times U(1)_{M} non-extremal black hole solutions of 6-dimensional Kaluza-Klein supergravity theories. Extremal solutions were found by Cvetič and Youm\cite{C-Y}. Multi black hole solutions are also presented. After electro-magnetic duality transformation is performed, these multi black hole solutions are mapped into the the exact solutions found by Horowitz and Tseytlin\cite{H-T} in 5-dimensional string theory compactified into 4-dimensions. The massless fields of this theory can be embedded into the heterotic string theory compactified on a 6-torus. Rotating black hole solutions can be read off those of the heterotic string theory found by Sen\cite{Sen3}.

Mass vs. Charge: Quantum Radiation from Zero Temperature Black Holes

We study the mass-charge relation for the semiclassical extremal black hole of the $S$-wave sector Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to $N$ conformal scalars. The classical ratio $M/{|Q|}=1$ is shown to be modified to $M/{|Q|} \simeq 1-k/6$ for small $ k \equiv N\hbar/(12πQ^{2})$. Furthermore, numerical study for $k<2$ shows that $M/|Q|$ is a monotonically decreasing function of $k$. We speculate on the consequence of such a modification in the 4-dimensional context.
