AdS Q-Soliton and Inhomogeneously mass-deformed ABJM Model

We study dual geometries to a deformed ABJM model with spatially dependent source functions at finite temperature. These source functions are proportional to the mass function $m(x)= m_0 \sin k x$ and its derivative $m'(x)$. As dual geometries, we find hairy black branes and AdS solitons corresponding to deconfinement phase and confining phase of the dual field theory, respectively. It turns out that the hairy AdS solitons have lower free energy than the black branes when the Hawking temperature is smaller than the confining scale. Therefore the dual system undergoes the first order phase transition. Even though our study is limited to the so-called Q-lattice ansatz, the solution space contains a set of solutions dual to a supersymmetric mass deformation. As a physical quantity to probe the confining phase, we investigate the holographic entanglement entropy and discuss its behavior in terms of modulation effect.

Thermodynamics of Inhomogeneously Mass-deformed ABJM Model and Pressure Anisotropy

In this paper we study the thermodynamics of black branes with a modulated complex scalar in the context of bulk and boundary theories. The modulation induces inhomogeneity to the dual field theory, anisotropic pressure, and brane charge to the bulk geometry. The first law of thermodynamics and the Smarr relation are obtained using the off-shell ADT and the reduced action formalisms. We discuss the prescription for the mass of black branes, which relies on relevant and marginal deformations in the dual field theory. One of the cases is the gravity dual to a ABJM model with a sinusoidal mass function depending on a spatial coordinate. This is the first study of the deformed ABJM model at finite temperature including bulk thermodynamics.

Canonical energy and hairy AdS black holes

We propose the modified version of the canonical energy which was introduced originally by Hollands and Wald. Our construction depends only on the Euler-Lagrange expression of the system and thus is independent of the ambiguity in the Lagrangian. After some comments on our construction, we briefly mention on the relevance of our construction to the boundary information metric in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We also study the stability of three-dimensional hairy extremal black holes by using our construction.

Holography without counter terms

By considering the behavior of the reduced action under the scaling transformation, we present a unified derivation of the Smarr-like relation for asymptotically anti-de-Sitter planar black holes. This novel Smarr-like relation leads to useful information in the condensed matter systems through the AdS/CMT correspondence. By using our results, we provide an efficient way to obtain the holographically renormalized on-shell action without the information on the explicit forms of counter terms. We find the complete consistency of our results with those in various models discussed in the recent literatures and obtain new implications.

Frame-independent holographic conserved charges

We propose the modified form of the conventional holographic conserved charges which provides us the frame-independent expressions for charges. This form is also preferable to the conventional one since it is independent of the holographic renormalization scheme. We show the frame and scheme independence through the matching of our holographic expression to the covariant bulk expression of conserved charges. As an explicit example, we consider five-dimensional AdS Kerr black holes and show that our form of holographic conserved charges gives us the identical expressions in the rotating and non-rotating frames.

Scaling symmetry and scalar hairy Lifshitz black holes

By utilizing the scaling symmetry of the reduced action for planar black holes, we obtain the corresponding conserved charge. We use the conserved charge to find the generalized Smarr relation of static hairy planar black holes in various dimensions. Our results not only reproduce the relation in the various known cases but also give the new relation in the Lifshitz planar black holes with the scalar hair.

Quasi-local charges and asymptotic symmetry generators

The quasi-local formulation of conserved charges through the off-shell approach is extended to cover the asymptotic symmetry generators. By introducing identically conserved currents which are appropriate for asymptotic Killing vectors, we show that the asymptotic symmetry generators can be understood as quasi-local charges. We also show that this construction is completely consistent with the on-shell method.

preprint2014arXiv

Quasi-local conserved charges and holography

We construct a quasi-local formalism for conserved charges in a theory of gravity in the presence of matter fields which may have slow falloff behaviors at the asymptotic infinity. This construction depends only on equations of motion and so it is irrespective of ambiguities in the total derivatives of the Lagrangian. By using identically conserved currents, we show that this formalism leads to the same expressions of conserved charges as those in the covariant phase space approach. At the boundary of the asymptotic AdS space, we also introduce an identically conserved boundary current which has the same structure as the bulk current and then show that this boundary current gives us the holographic conserved charges identical with those from the boundary stress tensor method. In our quasi-local formalism we present a general proof that conserved charges from the bulk potential are identical with those from the boundary current. Our results can be regarded as the extension of the existing results on the equivalence of conserved charges by the covariant phase space approach and by the boundary stress tensor method.

Aging Logarithmic Galilean Field Theories

We analytically compute correlation and response functions of scalar operators for the systems with Galilean and corresponding aging symmetries for general spatial dimensions $d$ and dynamical exponent $z$, along with their logarithmic and logarithmic squared extensions, using the gauge/gravity duality. These non-conformal extensions of the aging geometry are marked by two dimensionful parameters, eigenvalue $\mathcal M$ of an internal coordinate and aging parameter $α$. We further perform systematic investigations on two-time response functions for general $d$ and $z$, and identify the growth exponent as a function of the scaling dimensions $Δ$ of the dual field theory operators and aging parameter $α$ in our theory. The initial growth exponent is only controlled by $Δ$, while its late time behavior by $α$ as well as $Δ$. These behaviors are separated by a time scale order of the waiting time. We attempt to make contact our results with some field theoretical growth models, such as Kim-Kosterlitz model at higher number of spatial dimensions $d$.

Aging Logarithmic Conformal Field Theory : a holographic view

We consider logarithmic extensions of the correlation and response functions of scalar operators for the systems with aging as well as Schrödinger symmetry. Aging is known to be the simplest nonequilibrium phenomena, and its physical significances can be understood by the two-time correlation and response functions. Their logarithmic part is completely fixed by the bulk geometry in terms of the conformal weight of the dual operator and the dual particle number. Motivated by recent experimental realizations of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class in growth phenomena and its subsequent theoretical extension to aging, we investigate our two-time correlation functions out of equilibrium, which show several qualitatively different behaviors depending on the parameters in our theory. They exhibit either growing or aging, i.e. power-law decaying, behaviors for the entire range of our scaling time. Surprisingly, for some parameter ranges, they exhibit growing at early times as well as aging at later times.

Finite Temperature Aging Holography

We construct the gravity background which describes the dual field theory with aging invariance. We choose the decay modes of the bulk scalar field in the internal spectator direction to obtain the dissipative behavior of the boundary correlation functions of the dual scalar fields. In particular, the two-time correlation function at zero temperature has the characteristic features of the aging system: power law decay, broken time translation and dynamical scaling. We also construct the black hole backgrounds with asymptotic aging invariance. We extensively study characteristic behavior of the finite temperature two-point correlation function via analytic and numerical methods.

On Classical Equivalence Between Noncritical and Einstein Gravity : The AdS/CFT Perspectives

We find that noncritical gravity, a special class of higher derivative gravity, is classically equivalent to Einstein gravity at the full nonlinear level. We obtain the viscosity-to-entropy ratio and the second order transport coefficients of the dual fluid of noncritical gravity to all orders in the coupling of higher derivative terms. We also compute the holographic entanglement entropy in the dual CFT of noncritical gravity. All these results confirm the nonlinear equivalence between noncritical gravity and Einstein gravity at the classical level.

Noncritical Einstein-Weyl Gravity and the AdS/CFT Correspondence

We explore four-dimensional Einstein-Weyl gravity and supergravity on anti-de Sitter spacetime. For a specific range of the coupling with appropriate boundary conditions, we show the effective equivalence of the theory with Einstein gravity and AdS supergravity at the quadratic Lagrangian level. Furthermore we show that these equivalences can be promoted to the full nonlinear level. We also show that the similar behavior holds for the generalized Gibbons-Hawking terms. From this we find that the correlation functions in the dual conformal field theory of Einstein-Weyl gravity and supergravity can be readily read off from corresponding ones from Einstein gravity and AdS supergravity. We also give comments on some issues in critical gravity and supergravity as well as conformal gravity and supergravity.

Entropy Function and Universal Entropy of Two-Dimensional Extremal Black Holes

The entropy for two-dimensional black holes is obtained through the entropy function with the condition that the geometry approaches an $AdS_2$ spacetime in the near horizon limit. It is shown that the entropy is universal and proportional to the value of the dilaton field at the event horizon as expected. We find this universal behavior holds even after the inclusion of higher derivative terms, only modifying the proportional constant. More specifically, a variety of models of the dilaton gravity in two dimensions are considered, in which it is shown that the universal entropy coincides with the well-known results in the previous literatures.

Formation of Three-Dimensional Black Strings from Gravitational Collapse of Dust Cloud

We study the formation of black strings from a gravitational collapse of cylindrical dust clouds in the three-dimensional low-energy string theory. New junction conditions for the dilaton as well as two junction conditions for metrics and extrinsic curvatures between both regions of the clouds are presented. As a result, it is found that the collapsing dust cloud always collapses to a black string within a finite collapse time, and then a curvature singularity formed at origin is cloaked by an event horizon. Moreover, it is also shown that the collapse process can form a naked singularity within finite time, regardless of the choice of initial data.

Topological B-model and ${\hat c}=1$ String Theory

We study the topological B-model on a deformed $\Z_2$ orbifolded conifold by investigating variation of complex structures via quantum Kodaira-Spencer theories. The fermionic/brane formulation together with systematic utilization of symmetries of the geometry gives rise to a free fermion realization of the amplitudes. We derive Ward identities which solve the perturbed free energy exactly. We also obtain the corresponding Kontsevich-like matrix model. All these confirm the recent conjecture on the connection of the theory with ${\hat c}=1$ type 0A string theory compactified at the radius $R=\sqrt{α'/2}$.

Open-Closed String Duality from Orbifolded Conifolds

We study large N dualities for a class of ${\cal N} = 1$ theories realized on type IIB D5 branes wrapping 2-cycles of local Calabi-Yau threefolds which is obtained from resolving orbifolded conifolds or as effective field theories on D4 branes in type IIA brane configurations. The field theory is $\mathcal{N} =1$ supersymmetric $\prod U(N_{ij})$ Yang-Mills gauge theory. Strong coupling effects are analyzed in the deformed geometry. We propose open-closed string duality via a geometric transition in toric geometry. The T-dual type IIA picture and M-theory lifting are also considered.

3D N=2 massive super Yang-Mills and membranes/D2-branes in a curved background

We present a three dimensional novel massive N=2 super Yang-Mills action as a low energy effective worldvolume description of the D2-branes on a pp-wave. The action contains the Myers term, mass terms for three Higgs, and terms mixing the electric fields with other two Higgs. We derive the action in three different ways, from the M-theory matrix model, from the supermembrane action, and from the Dirac-Born-Infeld action. We verify the consistent mutual agreement and comment how each approach is complementary to another. In particular, we give the eleven dimensional geometric interpretation of the vacua in the worldvolume theory as the membranes tilted to the eleventh direction with the giant gravitons around.

Covariant Description of D-branes in IIA Plane-Wave Background

We work out boundary conditions for the covariant open string in the type IIA plane wave background, which corresponds to the D-branes in the type IIA theory. We use the kappa symmetric string action and see what kind of boundary conditions should be imposed to retain kappa symmetry. We find half BPS as well as quarter BPS branes and the analysis agrees with the previous work in the light cone gauge if the result is available. Finally we find that D0-brane is non-supersymmetric.

Solvable N=(4,4) Type IIA String Theory in Plane-Wave Background and D-Branes

We study various aspects of N=(4,4) type IIA GS superstring theory in the pp-wave background, which arises as the compactification of maximally supersymmetric eleven-dimensional pp-wave geometry along the spacelike isometry direction. We show the supersymmetry algebra of N=(4,4) worldsheet supersymmetry as well as non-linearly realized supersymmetry. We also give quantization of closed string and open string incorporating various boundary conditions. From the open string boundary conditions, we find configurations of D-branes which preserve half the supersymmetries. Among these we identify D4 brane configurations with longitudinal five brane configurations in matrix model on the eleven-dimensional pp-wave geometry.

Thermodynamic behavior of IIA string theory on a pp-wave

We obtain the thermal one loop free energy and the Hagedorn temperature of IIA superstring theory on the pp-wave geometry which comes from the circle compactification of the maximally supersymmetric eleven dimensional one. We use both operator and path integral methods and find the complete agreement between them in the free energy expression. In particular, the free energy in the $μ\to \infty$ limit is shown to be identical with that of IIB string theory on maximally supersymmetric pp-wave, which indicates the universal thermal behavior of strings in the large class of pp-wave backgrounds. We show that the zero point energy and the modular properties of the free energy are naturally incorporated into the path integral formalism.

5D action for longitudinal five branes on a pp-wave

String modes in a pp-wave background are generically massive, and the worldvolume description of the branes is to be given by `massive' gauge theories. In this paper, we present a five dimensional super Yang-Mills action with the Kahler-Chern-Simons term plus the Myers term as a low energy worldvolume description of the longitudinal five branes in a maximally supersymmetric pp-wave background. We derive the action from the M-theory matrix model on the pp-wave. We utilize the previously found 4/32 BPS solution of rotating five branes with stacks of membranes, but, to obtain the static configuration, we reformulate the matrix model in a rotating coordinate system which provides the inertial frame for the branes. Expanding the matrix model around the solution, we first obtain a non-commutative field theory action naturally equipped with the full sixteen dynamical supersymmetries. In the commutative limit, we show only four supersymmetries survive, resulting in a novel five dimensional "N=1/2" theory.

Conifolds with Discrete Torsion and Noncommutativity

We study D3 branes at orbifolded conifold singularities in the presence of discrete torsion. The vacuum moduli space of open strings becomes non-commutative due to a deformation of the superpotential and is studied via the representation theory of the moduli algebra. It is also shown that the center of the moduli algebra correctly describes the underlying orbifolded conifolds. The field theory can be obtained by a marginal deformation of the ${\cal N} = 1$ gauge theory on D3 branes at conifold singularity, the global symmetry being broken from $SU(2) \times SU(2)$ to $U(1) \times U(1)$. By using the AdS/CFT correspondence we argue that the marginal deformation is related to massless KK modes of NSNS and RR two form reduced on the compact space $T^{1,1}$. We build a $T^2$ fibration of $T^{1,1}$ and show that a D3 brane in the bulk correspond to a D5 brane on the $T^2$ fibre. We also discuss the possible brane construction of the system.

Eleven-dimensional massless superparticles and matrix theory spin-orbit couplings revisited

The classical probe dynamics of the eleven-dimensional massless superparticles in the background geometry produced by N source M-momenta is investigated in the framework of N-sector DLCQ supergravity. We expand the probe action up to the two fermion terms and find that the fermionic contributions are the spin-orbit couplings, which precisely agree with the matrix theory calculations. We comment on the lack of non-perturbative corrections in the one-loop matrix quantum mechanics effective action and its compatibility with the supergravity analysis.

Non-perturbative membrane spin-orbit couplings in M/IIA theory

Membrane source-probe dynamics is investigated in the framework of the finite N-sector DLCQ M theory compactified on a transverse two-torus for an arbitrary size of the longitudinal dimension. The non-perturbative two fermion terms in the effective action of the matrix theory, the (2+1)-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, that are related to the four derivative F^4 terms by the supersymmetry transformation are obtained, including the one-loop term and full instanton corrections. On the supergravity side, we compute the classical probe action up to two fermion terms based on the classical supermembrane formulation in an arbitrary curved background geometry produced by source membranes satisfying the BPS condition; two fermion terms correspond to the spin-orbit couplings for membranes. We find precise agreement between two approaches when the background space-time is chosen to be that of the DLCQ M theory, which is asymptotically locally Anti-de Sitter.

Background geometry of DLCQ M theory on a p-torus and holography

Via supergravity, we argue that the infinite Lorentz boost along the M theory circle a la Seiberg toward the DLCQ M theory compactified on a p-torus (p<5) implies the holographic description of the microscopic theory. This argument lets us identify the background geometries of DLCQ $M$ theory on a p-torus; for p=0 (p=1), the background geometry turns out to be eleven-dimensional (ten-dimensional) flat Minkowski space-time, respectively. Holography for these cases results from the localization of the light-cone momentum. For p = 2,3,4, the background geometries are the tensor products of an Anti de Sitter space and a sphere, which, according to the AdS/CFT correspondence, have the holographic conformal field theory description. These holographic descriptions are compatible to the microscopic theory of Seiberg based on $\tilde{M}$ theory on a spatial circle with the rescaled Planck length, giving an understanding of the validity of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Vortex solutions of a Maxwell-Chern-Simons field coupled to four-fermion theory

We find the static vortex solutions of the model of Maxwell-Chern-Simons gauge field coupled to a (2+1)-dimensional four-fermion theory. Especially, we introduce two matter currents coupled to the gauge field minimally: the electromagnetic current and a topological current associated with the electromagnetic current. Unlike other Chern-Simons solitons the N-soliton solution of this theory has binding energy and the stability of the solutions is maintained by the charge conservation laws.
