Projective Hilbert Modules and Sequential Approximation

We show that, when $A$ is a separable C*-algebra, every countably generated Hilbert $A$-module is projective (with bounded module maps as morphisms). We also study the approximate extensions of bounded module maps. In the case that $A$ is a $σ$-unital simple C*-algebra with strict comparison and every strictly positive lower semicontinuous affine function on quasitraces can be realized as the rank of an element in Cuntz semigroup, we show that the Cuntz semigroup is the same as unitarily equivalent class of countably generated Hilbert $A$-modules if and only if $A$ has stable rank one.

Hereditary uniform property $Γ$

We study the uniform property $Γ$ for separable simple $C^*$-algebras which have quasitraces and may not be exact. We show that a stably finite separable simple $C^*$-algebra $A$ with strict comparison and uniform property $Γ$ has tracial approximate oscillation zero and stable rank one. Moreover in this case, its hereditary $C^*$-subalgebras also have a version of uniform property $Γ.$ If a separable non-elementary simple amenable $C^*$-algebra $A$ with strict comparison has this hereditary uniform property $Γ,$ then $A$ is ${\cal Z}$-stable.

Non-amenable simple C*-algebras with tracial approximation

We construct two types of unital separable simple $C^*$-alebras $A_z^{C_1}$ and $A_z^{C_2},$ one is exact but not amenable, and the other is non-exact. Both have the same Elliott invariant as the Jiang-Su algebra, namely, $A_z^{C_i}$ has a unique tracial state, $$(K_0(A_z^{C_i}), K_0(A_z^{C_i})_+, [1_{A_z^{C_i}} ])=(\mathbb Z, \mathbb Z_+,1)$$ and $K_{1}(A_z^{C_i})=\{0\}$ ($i=1,2$). We show that $A_z^{C_i}$ ($i=1,2$) is essentially tracially in the class of separable ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-alebras of nuclear dimension 1. $A_z^{C_i}$ has stable rank one, strict comparison for positive elements and no 2-quasitrace other than the unique tracial state. We also produce models of unital separable simple non-exact $C^*$-alebras which are essentially tracially in the class of simple separable nuclear ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-alebras and the models exhaust all possible weakly unperforated Elliott invariants. We also discuss some basic properties of essential tracial approximation.

On classification of non-unital amenable simple C*-algebras, III, the range and the reduction

Following Elliott's earlier work, we show that the Elliott invariant of any finite separable simple $C^*$-algebra with finite nuclear dimension can always be described as a scaled simple ordered group pairing together with a countable abelian group which unifies the unital and nonunital, as well as stably projectionless cases. We also show that, for any given such invariant set, there is a finite separable simple $C^*$-algebra, whose Elliott invariant is the given set, a refinement of the range theorem of Elliott in the stable case. In the stably projectionless case, modified model $C^*$-algebras are constructed in such a way that they are of generalized tracial rank one and have other technical features. We also show that every stably projectionless separable simple amenable $C^*$-algebra in the UCT class has rationally generalized tracial rank one.

Extensions of C*-algebas by a small ideal

We classify all essential extensions of the form $$0 \rightarrow \W \rightarrow \D \rightarrow A \rightarrow 0$$ where $\W$ is the unique separable simple C*-algebra with a unique tracial state, with finite nuclear dimension and with $K_i(\W)=\{0\}$ ($i=0,1$) which satisfies the Universal Coefficient theorem (UCT), and $A$ is a separable amenable $\W$-embeddable C*-algebra which satisfies the UCT. We actually prove more general results. We also classify a class of amenable \CA s which have only one proper closed ideal $\W.$

On classification of simple non-unital amenable C*-algebras, II

We present a classification theorem for amenable simple stably projectionless C*-algebras with generalized tracial rank one whose $K_0$ vanish on traces which satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem. One of them is denoted by ${\cal Z}_0$ which has a unique tracial state and $K_0({\cal Z}_0)=\mathbb{Z}$ and $K_1({\cal Z}_0)=\{0\}.$ Let $A$ and $B$ be two separable simple $C^*$-algebras satisfying the UCT and have finite nuclear dimension. We show that $A\otimes {\cal Z}_0\cong B\otimes {\cal Z}_0$ if and only if ${\rm Ell}(B\otimes {\cal Z}_0)={\rm Ell}(B\otimes {\cal Z}_0).$ A class of simple separable $C^*$-algebras which are approximately sub-homogeneous whose spectra having bounded dimension is shown to exhaust all possible Elliott invariant for $C^*$-algebras of the form $A\otimes {\cal Z}_0,$ where $A$ is any finite separable simple amenable $C^*$-algebras. Suppose that $A$ and $B$ are two finite separable simple $C^*$-algebras with finite nuclear dimension satisfying the UCT such that traces vanishe on $K_0(A)$ and $K_0(B)$ (but arbitrary $K_1$). One consequence of the main results in this situation is that $A\cong B$ if and only if $A$ and $B$ have the isomorphic Elliott invariant.

Classification of finite simple amenable ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-algebras

We present a classification theorem for a class of unital simple separable amenable ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-algebras by the Elliott invariant. This class of simple $C^*$-algebras exhausts all possible Elliott invariant for unital stably finite simple separable amenable ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-algebras. Moreover, it contains all unital simple separable amenable $C^*$-alegbras which satisfy the UCT and have finite rational tracial rank.

Crossed products and minimal dynamical systems

Let $X$ be an infinite compact metric space with finite covering dimension and let $α, β: X\to X$ be two minimal homeomorphisms. We prove that the crossed product $C^*$-algebras $C(X)\rtimes_α\Z$ and $C(X)\rtimes_\belta\Z$ are isomorphic if and only if they have isomorphic Elliott invariant. In a more general setting, we show that if $X$ is an infinite compact metric space and if $α: X\to X$ is a minimal homeomorphism such that $(X, α)$ has mean dimension zero, then the tensor product of the crossed product with a UHF-algebra of infinite type has generalized tracial rank at most one. This implies that the crossed product is in a classifiable class of amenable simple $C^*$-algebras.

Distance between unitary orbits of normal elements in simple C*-algebras of real rank zero

Let $x, y$ be two normal elements in a unital simple C*-algebra $A.$ We introduce a function $D_c(x, y)$ and show that in a unital simple AF-algebra there is a constant $1>C>0$ such that $$ C\cdot D_c(x, y)\le {\rm dist}({\cal U}(x),{\cal U}(y))\le D_c(x,y), $$ where ${\cal U}(x)$ and ${\cal U}(y)$ are the closures of the unitary orbits of $x$ and of $y,$ respectively. We also generalize this to unital simple C*-algebras with real rank zero, stable rank one and weakly unperforated $K_0$-group. More complicated estimates are given in the presence of non-trivial $K_1$-information.

Homomorphisms from AH-algebras

Let $C$ be a general unital AH-algebra and let $A$ be a unital simple $C^*$-algebra with tracial rank at most one. Suppose that $ϕ, ψ: C\to A$ are two unital monomorphisms. We show that $ϕ$ and $ψ$ are approximately unitarily equivalent if and only if \beq[ϕ]&=&[ψ] {\rm in} KL(C,A), ϕ_{\sharp}&=&ψ_{\sharp}\tand ϕ^†&=&ψ^†, \eneq where $ϕ_{\sharp}$ and $ψ_{\sharp}$ are continuous affine maps from tracial state space $T(A)$ of $A$ to faithful tracial state space $T_{\rm f}(C)$ of $C$ induced by $ϕ$ and $ψ,$ respectively, and $ϕ^‡$ and $ψ^‡$ are induced homomorphisms from $K_1(C)$ into $\Aff(T(A))/\bar{ρ_A(K_0(A))},$ where $\Aff(T(A))$ is the space of all real affine continuous functions on $T(A)$ and $\bar{ρ_A(K_0(A))}$ is the closure of the image of $K_0(A)$ in the affine space $\Aff(T(A)).$ In particular, the above holds for $C=C(X),$ the algebra of continuous functions on a compact metric space. An approximate version of this is also obtained. We also show that, given a triple of compatible elements $κ\in KL_e(C,A)^{++},$ an affine map $γ: T(C)\to T_{\rm f}(C)$ and a \hm $\af: K_1(C)\to \Aff(T(A))/\bar{ρ_A(K_0(A))},$ there exists a unital monomorphism $ϕ: C\to A$ such that $[h]=κ,$ $h_{\sharp}=γ$ and $ϕ^†=\af.$

Tensor Products of Classifiable C*-algebras

Let ${\cal A}_1$ be the class of all unital separable simple $C^*$-algebras $A$ such that $A\otimes U$ has tracial rank at most one for all UHF-algebras of infinite type. It has been shown that amenable ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-algebras in ${\cal A}_1$ which satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem can be classified up to isomorphism by the Elliott invariant. We show that $A\in {\cal A}_1$ if and only if $A\otimes B$ has tracial rank at most one for one of unital simple infinite dimensional AF-algebra $B.$ In fact, we show that $A\in {\cal A}_1$ if and only if $A\otimes B\in {\cal A}_1$ for some unital simple AH-algebra $B.$ Other results regarding the tensor products of $C^*$-algebras in ${\cal A}_1$ are also obtained

The classification of simple separable unital locally ASH algebras

Let $A$ be a simple separable unital locally approximately subhomogeneous C*-algebra (locally ASH algebra). It is shown that $A\otimes Q$ can be tracially approximated by unital Elliott-Thomsen algebras with trivial $\textrm{K}_1$-group, where $Q$ is the universal UHF algebra. In particular, it follows that $A$ is classifiable by the Elliott invariant if $A$ is Jiang-Su stable.

Determinant Rank of C*-algebras

Let $A$ be a unital $C^*$-algebra and let $U_0(A)$ be the group of unitaries of $A$ which are path connected to the identity. Denote by $CU(A)$ the closure of the commutator subgroup of $U_0(A).$ Let $i_A^{(1, n)}\colon U_0(A)/CU(A)\rightarrow U_0(\mathrm M_n(A))/CU(\mathrm M_n(A))$ be the \hm\, defined by sending $u$ to ${\rm diag}(u,1_n).$ We study the problem when the map $i_A^{(1,n)}$ is an isomorphism for all $n.$ We show that it is always surjective and is injective when $A$ has stable rank one. It is also injective when $A$ is a unital $C^*$-algebra of real rank zero, or $A$ has no tracial state. We prove that the map is an isomorphism when $A$ is the Villadsen's simple AH--algebra of stable rank $k>1.$ We also prove that the map is an isomorphism for all Blackadar's unital projectionless separable simple $C^*$-algebras. Let $A=\mathrm M_n(C(X)),$ where $X$ is any compact metric space. It is noted that the map $i_A^{(1, n)}$ is an isomorphism for all $n.$ As a consequence, the map $i_A^{(1, n)}$ is always an isomorphism for any unital $C^*$-algebra $A$ that is an inductive limit of finite direct sum of $C^*$-algebras of the form $\mathrm M_n(C(X))$ as above. Nevertheless we show that there are unital $C^*$-algebras $A$ such that $i_A^{(1,2)}$ is not an isomorphism.

Rotation algebras and Exel trace formula

We found that if $u$ and $v$ are any two unitaries in a unital $C^*$-algebra with $\|uv-vu\|<2$ such that $uvu^*v^*$ commutes with $u$ and $v,$ then the \SCA\, $A_{u,v}$ generated by $u$ and $v$ is isomorphic to a quotient of the rotation algebra $A_θ$ provided that $A_{u,v}$ has a unique tracial state. We also found that the Exel trace formula holds in any unital $C^*$-algebra. Let $θ\in (-1/2, 1/2)$ be a rational number. We prove the following: For any $\ep>0,$ there exists $\dt>0$ satisfying the following: if $u$ and $v$ are two unitary matrices such that $$ \|uv-e^{2πiθ}vu\|<\dt\andeqn {1\over{2πi}}τ(\log(uvu^*v^*))=θ, $$ then there exists a pair of unitary matrices $\tilde{u}$ and $\tilde{v}$ such that $$ \tilde{u}\tilde{v}=e^{2πiθ} \tilde{v}\tilde{u},\,\, \|u-\tilde{u}\|<\ep\andeqn \|v-\tilde{v}\|<\ep. $$ Furthermore, a generalization of this for all real $θ$ is obtained for unitaries in unital infinite dimensional simple $C^*$-algebras of tracial rank zero.

Asymptotic unitary equivalence in $C^*$-algebras

Let $C=C(X)$ be the unital $C^*$-algebra of all continuous functions on a finite CW complex $X$ and let $A$ be a unital simple $C^*$-algebra with tracial rank at most one. We show that two unital monomorphisms $ϕ, ψ: C\to A$ are asymptotically unitarily equivalent, i.e., there exists a continuous path of unitaries $\{u_t: t\in [0,1)\}\subset A$ such that $$ \lim_{t\to 1} u_t^*ϕ(f)u_t=ψ(f) {\rm for all} \in C(X), $$ if and only if \beq [ϕ]&=&[ψ] {\rm in} KK(C, A), τ\circ ϕ&=&τ\circ ψ{\rm for all} τ\in T(A), and ϕ^†&=&ψ^†, \eneq where $T(A)$ is the simplex of tracial states of $A$ and $ϕ^†, ψ^†: U(M_{\infty}(C))/DU(M_{\infty}(C))\to$ $U(M_{\infty}(A))/DU(M_{\infty}(A))$ are induced homomorphisms and where $U(M_{\infty}(A))$ and $U(M_{\infty}(C))$ are groups of union of unitary groups of $M_k(A)$ and $M_k(C)$ for all integer $k\ge 1,$ $DU(M_{\infty}(A))$ and $DU(M_{\infty}(C))$ are commutator subgroups of $U(M_{\infty}(A))$ and $U(M_{\infty}(C)),$ respectively. We actually prove a more general result for the case that $C$ is any general unital AH-algebra.

Exponential rank and exponential length for Z-stable simple C*-algebras

Let $A$ be a unital separable simple ${\cal Z}$-stable C*-algebra which has rational tracial rank at most one and let $u\in U_0(A),$ the connected component of the unitary group of $A.$ We show that, for any $ε>0,$ there exists a self-adjoint element $h\in A$ such that $$ |u-\exp(ih)|<ε. $$ The lower bound of $|h|$ could be as large as one wants. If $u\in CU(A),$ the closure of the commutator subgroup of the unitary group, we prove that there exists a self-adjoint element $h\in A$ such that $$ |u-\exp(ih)| <εand |h|\le 2π. $$ Examples are given that the bound $2π$ for $|h|$ is the optimal in general. For the Jiang-Su algebra ${\cal Z},$ we show that, if $u\in U_0({\cal Z})$ and $ε>0,$ there exists a real number $-π<t\le π$ and a self-adjoint element $h\in {\cal Z}$ with $|h|\le 2π$ such that $$ |e^{it}u-\exp(ih)|<ε. $$

Kishimoto's Conjugacy Theorems in simple $C^*$-algebras of tracial rank one

Let $A$ be a unital separable simple amenable $C^*$-algebra with finite tracial rank which satisfies the Universal Coefficient Theorem (UCT). Suppose $\af$ and $\bt$ are two automorphisms with the Rokhlin property that {induce the same action on the $K$-theoretical data of $A$.} We show that $\af$ and $\bt$ are strongly cocycle conjugate and uniformly approximately conjugate, that is, there exists a sequence of unitaries $\{u_n\}\subset A$ and a sequence of strongly asymptotically inner automorphisms $σ_n$ such that $$ \af={\rm Ad}\, u_n\circ σ_n\circ \bt\circ σ_n^{-1}\andeqn \lim_{n\to\infty}\|u_n-1\|=0, $$ and that the converse holds. {We then give a $K$-theoretic description as to exactly when $\af$ and $\bt$ are cocycle conjugate, at least under a mild restriction. Moreover, we show that given any $K$-theoretical data, there exists an automorphism $\af$ with the Rokhlin property which has the same $K$-theoretical data.

We also show that this holds for some AH-algebras $A.$ {Moreover, if $κ\in KL(A,B)$ preserves the order and the identity, $λ: \aff(\tr(A))\to \aff(\tr(B))$ is a continuous affine map and $γ: U(A)/CU(A)\to U(B)/CU(B)$ is a \hm\, which are compatible, we also show that there is a unital \hm\, $ϕ: A\to B$ so that $([ϕ],ϕ_{\sharp},ϕ^‡)=(κ, λ, γ),$ at least in the case that $K_1(A)$ is a free group,

On generalized universal irrational rotation algebras and the operator $u+v$

We introduce a class of generalized universal irrational rotation $C^*$-algebras $A_{θ,γ}=C^*(x,w)$ which is characterized by the relations $w^*w=ww^*=1$, $x^*x=γ(w)$, $xx^*=γ(e^{-2πiθ}w)$, and $xw=e^{-2πiθ}wx$, where $θ$ is an irrational number and $γ(z)\in C(\mathbb{T})$ is a positive function. We characterize tracial linear functionals, simplicity, and $K$-groups of $A_{θ,γ}$ in terms of zero points of $γ(z)$. We show that if $A_{θ,γ}$ is simple then $A_{θ,γ}$ is an $A{\mathbb T}$-algebra of real rank zero. We classify $A_{θ,γ}$ in terms of $θ$ and zero points of $γ(z)$. Let $A_θ=C^*(u,v)$ be the universal irrational rotation $C^*$-algebra with $vu=e^{2πiθ}uv$. Then $C^*(u+v)\cong A_{θ,|1+z|^2}$. As an application, we show that $C^*(u+v)$ is a proper simple $C^*$-subalgebra of $A_θ$ which has a unique trace, $K_1(C^*(u+v))\cong \mathbb{Z}$, and there is an order isomorphism of $K_0(C^*(u+v))$ onto $\mathbb{Z}+\mathbb{Z}θ$. {Moreover, $C^*(u+v)$ is a unital simple $A{\mathbb T}$-algebra of real rank zero.} We also calculate the spectrum and the Brown measure of $u+v$.

We also show that unital separable simple $C^*$-algebrass which are "tracially" locally AH with slow dimension growth are ${\cal Z}$-stable. As a consequence, unital separable simple $C^*$-algebras which are locally AH with no dimension growth are isomorphic to a unital simple AH-algebra with no dimension growth.

Cuntz semigroups of C*-algebras of stable rank one and projective Hilbert modules

The Rohlin property for automorphisms on simple C*-algebras

We study a general Kishimoto's problem for automorphisms on simple C*-algebras with tracial rank zero. Let $A$ be a unital separable simple C*-algebra with tracial rank zero and let $α$ be an automorphism. Under the assumption that $α$ has certain Rokhlin property, we present a proof that $A\rtimes_α\Z$ has tracial rank zero. We also show that if the induced map $α_{*0}$ on $K_0(A)$ fixes a "dense" subgroup of $K_0(A)$ then the tracial Rokhlin property implies a stronger Rokhlin property. Consequently, the induced crossed product C*-algebras have tracial rank zero.

Minimal dynamical systems on the product of the Cantor set and the circle

We prove that a crossed product algebra arising from a minimal dynamical system on the product of the Cantor set and the circle has real rank zero if and only if that system is rigid. In the case that cocycles take values in the rotation group, it is also shown that rigidity implies tracial rank zero, and in particular, the crossed product algebra is isomorphic to a unital simple AT-algebra of real rank zero. Under the same assumption, we show that two systems are approximately $K$-conjugate if and only if there exists a sequence of isomorphisms between two associated crossed products which approximately maps $C(X\times \T)$ onto $C(X\times \T)$.
