Analytic Deep Learning-based Surrogate Model for Operational Planning with Dynamic TTC Constraints

The increased penetration of wind power introduces more operational changes of critical corridors and the traditional time-consuming transient stability constrained total transfer capability (TTC) operational planning is unable to meet the real-time monitoring need. This paper develops a more computationally efficient approach to address that challenge via the analytical deep learning-based surrogate model. The key idea is to resort to the deep learning for developing a computationally cheap surrogate model to replace the original time-consuming differential-algebraic constraints related to TTC. However, the deep learning-based surrogate model introduces implicit rules that are difficult to handle in the optimization process. To this end, we derive the Jacobian and Hessian matrices of the implicit surrogate models and finally transfer them into an analytical formulation that can be easily solved by the interior point method. Surrogate modeling and problem reformulation allow us to achieve significantly improved computational efficiency and the yielded solutions can be used for operational planning. Numerical results carried out on the modified IEEE 39-bus system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in dealing with com-plicated TTC constraints while balancing the computational efficiency and accuracy.

Direct Measurement of the Electronic Structure and band gap nature of atomic-layer-thick 2H-MoTe2

The millimeter sized monolayer and bilayer 2H-MoTe2 single crystal samples are prepared by a new mechanical exfoliation method. Based on such high-quality samples, we report the first direct electronic structure study on them, using standard high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). A direct band gap of 0.924eV is found at K in the rubidium-doped monolayer MoTe2. Similar valence band alignment is also observed in bilayer MoTe2,supporting an assumption of a analogous direct gap semiconductor on it. Our measurements indicate a rather large band splitting of 212meV at the valence band maximum (VBM) in monolayer MoTe2, and the splitting is systematically enlarged with layer stacking, from monolayer to bilayer and to bulk. Meanwhile, our PBE band calculation on these materials show excellent agreement with ARPES results. Some fundamental electronic parameters are derived from the experimental and calculated electronic structures. Our findings lay a foundation for further application-related study on monolayer and bilayer MoTe2.

On weak-strong uniqueness and singular limit for the compressible Primitive Equations

This paper addresses the weak-strong uniqueness property and singular limit for the compressible Primitive Equations (PE). We show that a weak solution coincides with the strong solution emanating from the same initial data. On the other hand, we prove compressible PE will approach the incompressible inviscid PE equations in the regime of low Mach number and large Reynolds number in the case of well-prepared initial data. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first work to bridge the link between the compressible PE with incompressible inviscid PE.

Rough Path Theory to approximate Random Dynamical Systems

We consider the rough differential equation $dY=f(Y)d\bm \om$ where $\bm \om=(ω,\bbomega)$ is a rough path defined by a Brownian motion $ω$ on $\RR^m$. Under the usual regularity assumption on $f$, namely $f\in C^3_b (\RR^d, \RR^{d\times m})$, the rough differential equation has a unique solution that defines a random dynamical system $ϕ_0$. On the other hand, we also consider an ordinary random differential equation $dY_δ=f(Y_δ)dω_\de$, where $ω_\de$ is a random process with stationary increments and continuously differentiable paths that approximates $ω$. The latter differential equation generates a random dynamical system $ϕ_δ$ as well. We show the convergence of the random dynamical system $ϕ_δ$ to $ϕ_0$ for $δ\to 0$ in Hölder norm.

The Cauchy problem for fractional Camassa-Holm equation in Besov space

In this paper, we consider the fractional Camassa-Holm equation modelling the propagation of small-but-finite amplitude long unidirectional waves in a nonlocally and nonlinearly elastic medium. First, we establish the local well-posedness in Besov space $B^{s_0}_{2,1}$ with $s_0=2ν-\frac 1 2$ for $ν>\frac 3 2 $ and $s_0=\frac 5 2$ for $1<ν\leq \frac 3 2 $. Then, with a given analytic initial data, we establish the analyticity of the solutions in both variables, globally in space and locally in time.

Exponential Stability of Solutions to Stochastic Differential Equations Driven by G-Levy Process

In this paper, BDG-type inequality for G-stochastic calculus with respect to G-Levy process is obtained and solutions of stochastic differential equations driven by G-Levy process under non-Lipschitz condition are constructed. Moreover, we establish the mean square exponential stability and quasi sure exponential stability of the solutions be means of G-Lyapunov function method. An example is presented to illustrate the efficiency of the obtained results.

A Stochastic Generalized Ginzburg-Landau Equation Driven by Jump Noise

This paper is concerned with the stochastic generalized Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by a multiplicative noise of jump type. By a prior estimate, weak convergence and monotonicity technique, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution of an initial-boundary value problem with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. However, for the generalized Ginzburg-Landau equation, such a locally monotonic condition of the nonlinear term can not be satisfied in a straight way. For this, we utilize the characteristic structure of nonlinear term and refined analysis to overcome this gap.

Stochastic 3D Navier-Stokes equations with nonlinear damping: martingale solution, strong solution and small time large deviation principles

In this paper, by using classical Faedo-Galerkin approximation and compactness method, the existence of martingale solutions for the stochastic 3D Navier-Stokes equations with nonlinear damping is obtained. The existence and uniqueness of strong solution are proved for $β> 3$ with any $α>0$ and $α\geq \frac12$ as $β= 3$. Meanwhile, a small time large deviation principle for the stochastic 3D Navier-Stokes equation with damping is proved for $β> 3$ with any $α>0$ and $α\geq \frac12$ as $β= 3$.

Analysis of a non-autonomous mutualism model driven by Levy jumps

This article is concerned with a mutualism ecological model with Levy noise. The local existence and uniqueness of a positive solution are obtained with positive initial value, and the asymptotic behavior to the problem is studied. Moreover, we show that the solution is stochastically bounded and stochastic permanence. The sufficient conditions for the system to be extinct are given and the condition for the system to be persistent are also established.

Analysis of a mutualism model with stochastic perturbations

This article is concerned with a mutualism ecological model with stochastic perturbations. the local existence and uniqueness of a positive solution are obtained with positive initial value, and the asymptotic behavior to the problem is studied. Moreover, we show that the solution is stochastically bounded, uniformly continuous and stochastic permanence. The sufficient conditions for the system to be extinct are given and the condition for the system to be persistent are also established. At last, some figures are presented to illustrate our main results.

Persistent metal-insulator transition at the surface of an oxygen-deficient, epitaxial manganite film

The oxygen stoichiometry has a large influence on the physical and chemical properties of complex oxides. Most of the functionality in e.g. catalysis and electrochemistry depends in particular on control of the oxygen stoichiometry. In order to understand the fundamental properties of intrinsic surfaces of oxygen-deficient complex oxides, we report on in situ temperature dependent scanning tunnelling spectroscopy experiments on pristine oxygen deficient, epitaxial manganite films. Although these films are insulating in subsequent ex situ in-plane electronic transport experiments at all temperatures, in situ scanning tunnelling spectroscopic data reveal that the surface of these films exhibits a metal-insulator transition (MIT) at 120 K, coincident with the onset of ferromagnetic ordering of small clusters in the bulk of the oxygen-deficient film. The surprising proximity of the surface MIT transition temperature of nonstoichiometric films with that of the fully oxygenated bulk suggests that the electronic properties in the surface region are not significantly affected by oxygen deficiency in the bulk. This carries important implications for the understanding and functional design of complex oxides and their interfaces with specific electronic properties for catalysis, oxide electronics and electrochemistry.

Global solutions for a nonlocal Ginzberg-Landau equation and a nonlocal Fokker-Plank equation

This work is devoted to the study of a nonlocal Ginzberg-Landau equation by the semigroup method and a nonlocal Fokker-Plank equation by the viscosity vanishing method. For the nonlocal Ginzberg-Landau equation, there exists a unique global solution in the set $C^0(\mathbb{R}^+,\,H_0^{\fracα{2}}(D))\cap L_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^+,\,H_0^α(D))$, for $α\in (0,\,2)$. For the nonlocal Fokker-Plank equation, the regularity of the solution is weaker than that of the nonlocal Ginzberg-Landau equation due to the drift term.

Graphyne- and Graphdiyne-based Nanoribbons: Density Functional Theory Calculations of Electronic Structures

We report on the configurations and electronic properties of graphyne and graphdiyne nanoribbons with armchair and zigzag edges investigated with first principles calculations. Our results show that all the nanoribbons are semiconductors with suitable band gaps similar to silicon. And their band gaps decrease as widths of nanoribbons increase. We also find that the band gap is at the Gamma point for all graphdiyne ribbons and it is at the X point for all graphyne ribbons. Of particular interest, the band gap of zigzag graphyne nanoribbons show a unique step effect as the width increases. This property is good for tuning of the energy band gap, as in a certain range of the ribbon width, the energy gap remains constant and in reality the edge cannot be as neat as that in a theoretic model.

Stochastic Wave Equations with Nonlinear Damping and Source Terms

In this paper, we discuss an initial boundary value problem for the stochastic wave equation involving the nonlinear damping term $|u_t|^{q-2}u_t$ and a source term of the type $|u|^{p-2}u$. We firstly establish the local existence and uniqueness of solution by the Galerkin approximation method and show that the solution is global for $q\geq p$. Secondly, by an appropriate energy inequality, the local solution of the stochastic equations will blow up with positive probability or explosive in energy sense for $p>q$.

Pressure-induced Superconductivity in Crystalline Boron Nanowires

We report high-pressure induced superconductivity in boron nanowires (BNWs) with rhombohedral crystal structure. Obviously different from bulk rhombohedral boron, these BNWs show a semiconductor-metal transition at much lower pressure than bulk boron. Also, we found these BNWs become superconductors with Tc=1.5 K at 84 GPa, at the pressure of which bulk boron is still a semiconductor, via in-situ resistance measurements in a diamond anvil cell. With increasing pressure, Tc of the BNWs increases. The occurrence of superconductivity in the BNWs at a pressure as low as 84 GPa probably arises from the size effect.

Dynamics of the Thermohaline Circulation under Wind forcing

The ocean thermohaline circulation, also called meridional overturning circulation, is caused by water density contrasts. This circulation has large capacity of carrying heat around the globe and it thus affects the energy budget and further affects the climate. We consider a thermohaline circulation model in the meridional plane under external wind forcing. We show that, when there is no wind forcing, the stream function and the density fluctuation (under appropriate metrics) tend to zero exponentially fast as time goes to infinity. With rapidly oscillating wind forcing, we obtain an averaging principle for the thermohaline circulation model. This averaging principle provides convergence results and comparison estimates between the original thermohaline circulation and the averaged thermohaline circulation, where the wind forcing is replaced by its time average. This establishes the validity for using the averaged thermohaline circulation model for numerical simulations at long time scales.

Averaging Principle for Quasi-Geostrophic Motions under Rapidly Oscillating Forcing

In this paper, the averaging principle for quasi-geostrophic motions with rapidly oscillating forcing is proved, both on finite but large time intervals and on the entire time axis. This includes comparison estimate, stability estimate, and convergence result between quasi-geostrophic motions and its averaged motions. Furthermore, the existence of almost periodic quasi-geostrophic motions and attractor convergence are also investigated.
