Mixed quantum skew Howe duality and link invariants of type A

We define a ribbon category $\mathsf{Sp}(β)$, depending on a parameter $β$, which encompasses Cautis, Kamnitzer and Morrison's spider category, and describes for $β=m-n$ the monoidal category of representations of $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n})$ generated by exterior powers of the vector representation and their duals. We identify this category $\mathsf{Sp}(β)$ with a direct limit of quotients of a dual idempotented quantum group $\dot{\mathsf{U}}_q(\mathfrak{gl}_{r+s})$, proving a mixed version of skew Howe duality in which exterior powers and their duals appear at the same time. We show that the category $\mathsf{Sp}(β)$ gives a unified natural setting for defining the colored $\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n}$ link invariant (for $β=m-n$) and the colored HOMFLY-PT polynomial (for $β$ generic).

Skein Modules from Skew Howe Duality and Affine Extensions

We show that we can release the rigidity of the skew Howe duality process for ${\mathfrak sl}_n$ knot invariants by rescaling the quantum Weyl group action, and recover skein modules for web-tangles. This skew Howe duality phenomenon can be extended to the affine ${\mathfrak sl}_m$ case, corresponding to looking at tangles embedded in a solid torus. We investigate the relations between the invariants constructed by evaluation representations (and affinization of them) and usual skein modules, and give tools for interpretations of annular skein modules as sub-algebras of intertwiners for particular $U_q({\mathfrak sl}_n)$ representations. The categorification proposed in a joint work with A. Lauda and D. Rose also admits a direct extension in the affine case.

Sutured annular Khovanov-Rozansky homology

We introduce an sl(n) homology theory for knots and links in the thickened annulus. To do so, we first give a fresh perspective on sutured annular Khovanov homology, showing that its definition follows naturally from trace decategorifications of enhanced sl(2) foams and categorified quantum gl(m), via classical skew Howe duality. This framework then extends to give our annular sl(n) link homology theory, which we call sutured annular Khovanov-Rozansky homology. We show that the sl(n) sutured annular Khovanov-Rozansky homology of an annular link carries an action of the Lie algebra sl(n), which in the n=2 case recovers a result of Grigsby-Licata-Wehrli.

The $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ foam 2-category: a combinatorial formulation of Khovanov-Rozansky homology via categorical skew Howe duality

We give a purely combinatorial construction of colored $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ link homology. The invariant takes values in a 2-category where 2-morphisms are given by foams, singular cobordisms between $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ webs; applying a (TQFT-like) representable functor recovers (colored) Khovanov-Rozansky homology. Novel features of the theory include the introduction of `enhanced' foam facets which fix sign issues associated with the original matrix factorization formulation and the use of skew Howe duality to show that (enhanced) closed foams can be evaluated in a completely combinatorial manner. The latter answers a question posed in math.GT/0708.2228.

Khovanov homology is a skew Howe 2-representation of categorified quantum sl(m)

We show that Khovanov homology (and its sl(3) variant) can be understood in the context of higher representation theory. Specifically, we show that the combinatorially defined foam constructions of these theories arise as a family of 2-representations of categorified quantum sl(m) via categorical skew Howe duality. Utilizing Cautis-Rozansky categorified clasps we also obtain a unified construction of foam-based categorifications of Jones-Wenzl projectors and their sl(3) analogs purely from the higher representation theory of categorified quantum groups. In the sl(2) case, this work reveals the importance of a modified class of foams introduced by Christian Blanchet which in turn suggest a similar modified version of the sl(3) foam category introduced here.
