The transition matrix between the Specht and $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ web bases is unitriangular with respect to shadow containment

Webs are planar graphs with boundary that describe morphisms in a diagrammatic representation category for $\mathfrak{sl}_k$. They are studied extensively by knot theorists because braiding maps provide a categorical way to express link diagrams in terms of webs, producing quantum invariants like the well-known Jones polynomial. One important question in representation theory is to identify the relationships between different bases; coefficients in the change-of-basis matrix often describe combinatorial, algebraic, or geometric quantities (like, e.g., Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials). By "flattening" the braiding maps, webs can also be viewed as the basis elements of a symmetric-group representation. In this paper, we define two new combinatorial structures for webs: band diagrams and their one-dimensional projections, shadows, that measure depths of regions inside the web. As an application, we resolve an open conjecture that the change-of-basis between the so-called Specht basis and web basis of this symmetric-group representation is unitriangular for $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-webs. We do this using band diagrams and shadows to construct a new partial order on webs that is a refinement of the usual partial order. In fact, we prove that for $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-webs, our new partial order coincides with the tableau partial order on webs studied by the authors and others. We also prove that though the new partial order for $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-webs is a refinement of the previously-studied tableau order, the two partial orders do not agree for $\mathfrak{sl}_3$.

Dehn coloring and the dimer model for knots

Fox coloring provides a combinatorial framework for studying dihedral representations of the knot group. The less well-known concept of Dehn coloring captures the same data. Recent work of Carter-Silver-Williams clarifies the relationship between the two focusing on how one transitions between Fox and Dehn colorings. In our work, we relate Dehn coloring to the dimer model for knots showing that Dehn coloring data is encoded by a certain weighted balanced overlaid Tait graph. Using Kasteleyn theory, we provide graph theoretic methods for computing the determinant and Smith normal form of a knot. These constructions are closely related to Kauffman's work on a state sum for the Alexander polynomial.

An explicit bijection between semistandard tableaux and non-elliptic sl_3 webs

The sl_3 spider is a diagrammatic category used to study the representation theory of the quantum group U_q(sl_3). The morphisms in this category are generated by a basis of non-elliptic webs. Khovanov- Kuperberg observed that non-elliptic webs are indexed by semistandard Young tableaux. They establish this bijection via a recursive growth algorithm. Recently, Tymoczko gave a simple version of this bijection in the case that the tableaux are standard and used it to study rotation and joins of webs. We build on Tymoczko's bijection to give a simple and explicit algorithm for constructing all non-elliptic sl_3 webs.

Oddification of the cohomology of type A Springer varieties

We identify the ring of odd symmetric functions introduced by Ellis and Khovanov as the space of skew polynomials fixed by a natural action of the Hecke algebra at q=-1. This allows us to define graded modules over the Hecke algebra at q=-1 that are `odd' analogs of the cohomology of type A Springer varieties. The graded module associated to the full flag variety corresponds to the quotient of the skew polynomial ring by the left ideal of nonconstant odd symmetric functions. The top degree component of the odd cohomology of Springer varieties is identified with the corresponding Specht module of the Hecke algebra at q=-1.

A topological construction for all two-row Springer varieties

Springer varieties appear in both geometric representation theory and knot theory. Motivated by knot theory and categorification Khovanov provides a topological construction of $(n/2, n/2)$ Springer varieties. We extend Khovanov's construction to all two-row Springer varieties. Using the combinatorial and diagrammatic properties of this construction we provide a particularly useful homology basis and construct the Springer representation using this basis. We also provide a skein-theoretic formulation of the representation in this case.

Springer representations on the Khovanov Springer varieties

Springer varieties are studied because their cohomology carries a natural action of the symmetric group $S_n$ and their top-dimensional cohomology is irreducible. In his work on tangle invariants, Khovanov constructed a family of Springer varieties $X_n$ as subvarieties of the product of spheres $(S^2)^n$. We show that if $X_n$ is embedded antipodally in $(S^2)^n$ then the natural $S_n$-action on $(S^2)^n$ induces an $S_n$-representation on the image of $H_*(X_n)$. This representation is the Springer representation. Our construction admits an elementary (and geometrically natural) combinatorial description, which we use to prove that the Springer representation on $H_*(X_n)$ is irreducible in each degree. We explicitly identify the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis for the irreducible representation of $S_n$ corresponding to the partition $(n/2,n/2)$.

The Bar-Natan skein module of the solid torus and the homology of (n,n) Springer varieties

This paper establishes an isomorphism between the Bar-Natan skein module of the solid torus with a particular boundary curve system and the homology of the (n,n) Springer variety. The results build on Khovanov's work with crossingless matchings and the cohomology of the (n,n) Springer variety. We also give a formula for comultiplication in the Bar-Natan skein module for this specific three-manifold and boundary curve system.
