Relativistic spin hydrodynamics with torsion and linear response theory for spin relaxation

Using the second law of local thermodynamics and the first-order Palatini formalism, we formulate relativistic spin hydrodynamics for quantum field theories with Dirac fermions, such as QED and QCD, in a torsionful curved background. We work in a regime where spin density, which is assumed to relax much slower than other non-hydrodynamic modes, is treated as an independent degree of freedom in an extended hydrodynamic description. Spin hydrodynamics in our approach contains only three non-hydrodynamic modes corresponding to a spin vector, whose relaxation time is controlled by a new transport coefficient: the rotational viscosity. We study linear response theory and observe an interesting mode mixing phenomenon between the transverse shear and the spin density modes. We propose several field-theoretical ways to compute the spin relaxation time and the rotational viscosity, via the Green-Kubo formula based on retarded correlation functions.

Spin relaxation rate for heavy quarks in weakly coupled QCD plasma

We compute the relaxation rate of the spin density of heavy quarks in a perturbative QCD plasma to leading-log order in the coupling constant $g$. The spin relaxation rate $Γ_s$ in spin hydrodynamics is shown to be $Γ_s\sim g^4\log(1/g)T (T/M)^2$ in the heavy-quark limit $T/M\ll 1$, which is smaller than the relaxation rate of other non-hydrodynamic modes by additional powers of $T/M$. We demonstrate three different methods to evaluate the spin relaxation rate: 1) the Green-Kubo formula in the spin hydrodynamic regime, 2) the spin density correlation function in the strict hydrodynamic limit, and 3) quantum kinetic theory of the spin distribution function in momentum space. We highlight the interesting differences between these methods, while they are ultimately connected to each other by the underlying Ward-Takahashi identity for the non-conserved spin density.

The phase diagram of ultra quantum liquids

We discuss the dependence of the phase diagram of a hypothetical isotope of helium with nuclear mass less than 4 atomic mass units. We argue that with decreasing nucleus mass, the temperature of the superfluid phase transition (about 2.2 K in real He-4) increases, while that of the liquid-gas critical point (about 5.2 K in real He-4) decreases. We discuss various scenarios that may occur when the two temperatures approach each other and the order parameters of the superfluid and the liquid-gas phase transitions interact with each other. The simplest scenario, in which both order parameters become critical at particular values of the nuclear mass, temperature, and pressure, can be ruled out through on an analysis of the Landau theory. We argue that in the most likely scenario, as the nuclear mass decreases, first, a tricritical point appears on the line separating the superfluid and the normal fluid phase, then the critical point disappears under the first-order part of superfluid phase transition line, and in the end the tricritical point disappears. The last change in the phase diagram occurs when the two-body scattering length crosses zero, which corresponds to the nuclear mass of about 1.55 u. We develop a quantitative theory that allows one to determine the phase diagram in the vicinity of this point. Finally, we discuss several ways to physically realize such liquids.

Fluctuation dynamics in a relativistic fluid with a critical point

To describe dynamics of bulk and fluctuations near the QCD critical point we develop general relativistic fluctuation formalism for a fluid carrying baryon charge. Feedback of fluctuations modifies hydrodynamic coefficients including bulk viscosity and conductivity and introduces nonlocal and non-instantaneous terms in constitutive equations. We perform necessary ultraviolet (short-distance) renormalization to obtain cutoff independent deterministic equations suitable for numerical implementation. We use the equations to calculate the universal non-analytic small-frequency dependence of transport coefficients due to fluctuations (long-time tails). Focusing on the critical mode we show how this general formalism matches existing Hydro+ description of fluctuations near the QCD critical point and nontrivially extends it inside and outside of the critical region.

Topology of Generalized Spinors and Chiral Anomaly

Weyl fermions with nonlinear dispersion have appeared in real world systems, such as in the Weyl semi-metals and topological insulators. We consider the most general form of Dirac operators, and study its topological properties embedded in the chiral anomaly, in the index theorem, and in the odd-dimensional partition function, by employing the heat kernel. We find that all of these topological quantities are enhanced by a winding number defined by the Dirac operator in the momentum space, regardless of the spacetime dimensions. The chiral anomaly in $d=3+1$, in particular, is also confirmed via the conventional Feynman diagram. These interconnected results allow us to clarify the relationship between the chiral anomaly and the Chern number of the Berry connection, under dispute in some recent literatures, and also lead to a compact proof of the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem.

Heavy Quark Diffusion in Strong Magnetic Fields at Weak Coupling and Implications for Elliptic Flow

We compute the momentum diffusion coefficients of heavy quarks, $κ_\parallel$ and $κ_\perp$, in a strong magnetic field $B$ along the directions parallel and perpendicular to $B$, respectively, at the leading order in QCD coupling constant $α_s$. We consider a regime relevant for the relativistic heavy ion collisions, $α_s eB\ll T^2\ll eB$, so that thermal excitations of light quarks are restricted to the lowest Landau level (LLL) states. In the vanishing light-quark mass limit, we find $κ_\perp^{\rm LO}\propto α_s^2 T eB$ in the leading order that arises from screened Coulomb scatterings with (1+1)-dimensional LLL quarks, while $κ_\parallel$ gets no contribution from the scatterings with LLL quarks due to kinematic restrictions. We show that the first non-zero leading order contributions to $κ_\parallel^{\rm LO}$ come from the two separate effects: 1) the screened Coulomb scatterings with thermal gluons, and 2) a finite light-quark mass $m_q$. The former leads to $κ_\parallel^{\rm LO,\,gluon} \propto α_s^2 T^3$ and the latter to $κ_\parallel^{\rm LO,\,massive}\propto α_s (α_s eB)^{1/2} m_q^2$. Based on our results, we propose a new scenario for the large value of heavy-quark elliptic flow observed in RHIC and LHC. Namely, when $κ_\perp\ggκ_\parallel$, an anisotropy in drag forces gives rise to a sizable amount of the heavy-quark elliptic flow even if heavy quarks do not fully belong to an ellipsoidally expanding background fluid.

Heavy-Quark Diffusion Dynamics in Quark-Gluon Plasma under Strong Magnetic Fields

We discuss heavy-quark dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma under a strong magnetic field induced by colliding nuclei. By the use of the diagrammatic resummation techniques for Hard Thermal Loop and the external magnetic field, we show analytic results of heavy-quark diffusion coefficient and drag force which become anisotropic due to the preferred spatial orientation in the magnetic field. We argue that the anisotropic diffusion coefficient gives rise to an enhancement/suppression of the heavy-quark elliptic flow depending on the transverse momentum.

Jet quenching parameter of quark-gluon plasma in strong magnetic field: Perturbative QCD and AdS/CFT correspondence

We compute the jet quenching parameter $\hat q$ of QCD plasma in the presence of strong magnetic field in both weakly and strongly coupled regimes. In weakly coupled regime, we compute $\hat q$ in perturbative QCD at complete leading order (that is, leading log as well as the constant under the log) in QCD coupling constant $α_s$, assuming the hierarchy of scales $α_s eB\ll T^2\ll eB$. We consider two cases of jet orientations with respect to the magnetic field: 1) the case of jet moving parallel to the magnetic field, 2) the case jet moving perpendicular to the magnetic field. In the former case, we find $\hat q\sim α_s^2 (eB)T\log(1/α_s)$, while in the latter we have $\hat q\sim α_s^2 (eB)T\log(T^2/α_seB)$. In both cases, this leading order result arises from the scatterings with thermally populated lowest Landau level quarks. In strongly coupled regime described by AdS/CFT correspondence, we find $\hat q\sim \sqrtλ(eB)T$ or $\hat q\sim\sqrtλ\sqrt{eB}T^2$ in the same hierarchy of $T^2\ll eB$ depending on whether the jet is moving parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic field, respectively, which indicates a universal dependence of $\hat q$ on $(eB)T$ in both regimes for the parallel case, the origin of which should be the transverse density of lowest Landau level states proportional to $eB$. Finally, the asymmetric transverse momentum diffusion in the case of jet moving perpendicular to the magnetic field may give an interesting azimuthal asymmetry of the gluon Bremsstrahlung spectrum in the BDMPS-Z formalism.

Spin Polarized Photons from Axially Charged Plasma at Weak Coupling: Complete Leading Order

In the presence of (approximately conserved) axial charge in the QCD plasma at finite temperature, the emitted photons are spin-aligned, which is a unique P- and CP-odd signature of axial charge in the photon emission observables. We compute this "P-odd photon emission rate" in weak coupling regime at high temperature limit to complete leading order in the QCD coupling constant: the leading log as well as the constant under the log. As in the P-even total emission rate in the literature, the computation of P-odd emission rate at leading order consists of three parts: 1) Compton and Pair Annihilation processes with hard momentum exchange, 2) soft t- and u-channel contributions with Hard Thermal Loop re-summation, 3) Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) re-summation of collinear Bremstrahlung and Pair Annihilation. We present analytical and numerical evaluations of these contributions to our P-odd photon emission rate observable.

Gradient Correction to Photon Emission Rate at Strong Coupling

We compute the correction to the photon emission rate in first order of shear components of fluid velocity gradients, $σ_{ij}$, in near-equilibrium hydrodynamic plasma at strong coupling regime, using the real-time Schwinger-Keldysh formalism in AdS/CFT correspondence. Our result is an integral of an analytic expression. We observe that the gradient correction to the photon emission rate at strong coupling is about 0.3 - 0.4 times of the equilibrium rate in units of $σ_{ij}/T$.

Second Order Transport Coefficient from Chiral Anomaly at Weak Coupling: Diagrammatic Resummation

We compute one of the second order transport coefficients arising from the chiral anomaly in a high temperature weakly coupled regime of quark-gluon plasma. This transport coefficient is responsible for the CP-odd current that is proportional to the time derivative of the magnetic field, and can be considered as a first correction to the chiral magnetic conductivity at finite, small frequency. We observe that this transport coefficient has a non-analytic dependence on the coupling as $\sim 1/(g^4 \log(1/g))$ at weak coupling regime, which necessitates a re-summation of infinite ladder diagrams with leading pinch singularities to get a correct leading log result: a feature quite similar to that one finds in the computation of electric conductivity. We formulate and solve the relevant CP-odd Schwinger-Dyson equation in real-time perturbation theory that reduces to a coupled set of second order differential equations at leading log order. Our result for this second order transport coefficient indicates that chiral magnetic current has some resistance to the time change of magnetic field, which may be called "chiral induction effect". We also discuss the case of color current induced by color magnetic field.

The no-drag frame for anomalous chiral fluid

We show that for an anomalous fluid carrying dissipationless chiral magnetic and/or vortical currents there is a frame in which a stationary obstacle experiences no drag, but energy and charge currents do not vanish, resembling superfluidity. However, unlike ordinary superfluid flow, the anomalous chiral currents do transport entropy in this frame. We show that the second law of thermodynamics completely determines the amounts of these anomalous non-dissipative currents in the "no-drag frame" as polynomials in temperature and chemical potential with known anomaly coefficients. These general results are illustrated and confirmed by a calculation in the chiral kinetic theory and quark-gluon plasma at high temperature.

Thermalization of Quark-Gluon Plasma in Magnetic Field at Strong Coupling

We study thermalization of strongly coupled gauge theory plasma in the presence of magnetic field using the AdS/CFT correspondence. We utilize the falling energy-shell model as a holographic description of gauge theory plasma undergoing thermalization, and find the effect of magnetic field on thermalization time in various space-time dimensions. Our results demonstrate that magnetic field universally hastens thermalization of strongly coupled gauge theory plasma.

Chiral Magnetic and Vortical Effects in Higher Dimensions at Weak Coupling

Chiral Magnetic Effect and Chiral Vortical Effect are parity odd transport phenomena originating from chiral anomaly, and have generalizations to all even dimensional space-time higher than four dimensions. We attempt to compute the associated P-odd retarded response functions in the weak coupling limit of chiral fermion theory in all even dimensions, using the diagrammatic technique of real-time perturbation theory. We also clarify the necessary Kubo formula relating the computed P-odd retarded correlation functions and the associated anomalous transport coefficients. We speculate on the 8-fold classification of topological phases.

Chiral Magnetic Effect at Weak Coupling with Relaxation Dynamics

We provide a resolution of an old issue in weak coupling computation of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) current, where a free chiral fermion theory gives two different results depending on the order of the two limits, $ω\rightarrow 0$ (frequency) and $k\rightarrow 0$ (spatial momentum). We first argue based on hydrodynamics that in any reasonable interacting theory of chiral fermions the non-commutativity between the two limits should be absent, and we demonstrate this at weak coupling regime in two different frameworks: kinetic theory in the relaxation time approximation, and diagrammatic computation with resummation of damping rate. In the latter computation, we also show that the "pinch" singularity, which would make the summation of ladder diagrams necessary as in the P-even correlation function, is absent in the relevant P-odd correlation function. The correct value of CME current is reproduced even in the presence of relaxation dynamics in both computations.

Collective Modes of Chiral Kinetic Theory in Magnetic Field

We study collective excitations in systems described by chiral kinetic theory in external magnetic field. We consider high-temperature weak-coupling plasma, as well as high-density Landau Fermi liquid with interaction not restricted to be weak. We show that chiral magnetic wave (CMW) emerges in hydrodynamic regime (at frequencies smaller than collision relaxation rate) and the CMW velocity is determined by thermodynamic properties only. We find that in a plasma of opposite chiralities, at frequencies smaller than the chirality-flipping rate, the CMW excitation turns into a vector-like diffusion mode. In the interacting Fermi liquid, the CMW turns into the Landau zero sound mode in the high-frequency collisionless regime.

Lorentz Invariance in Chiral Kinetic Theory

We show that Lorentz invariance is realized nontrivially in the classical action of a massless spin-$\frac12$ particle with definite helicity. We find that the ordinary Lorentz transformation is modified by a shift orthogonal to the boost vector and the particle momentum. The shift ensures angular momentum conservation in particle collisions and implies a nonlocality of the collision term in the Lorentz-invariant kinetic theory due to side jumps. We show that 2/3 of the chiral-vortical effect for a uniformly rotating particle distribution can be attributed to the magnetic moment coupling required by the Lorentz invariance. We also show how the classical action can be obtained by taking the classical limit of the path integral for a Weyl particle.

Realistic Implementation of Chiral Magnetic Wave in Heavy Ion Collisions

Chiral Magnetic Wave (CMW) is a gapless collective excitation of chiral charges along the direction of magnetic field in the Quark-Gluon Plasma that arises from the triangle anomaly of QCD. We perform reliable study of the CMW in the realistic simulation of heavy ion collisions, and find that the CMW contributions to the charge dependent elliptic flow of pions, $Δv_2 = v_2(π^-)-v_2(π^+)$, linearly depending on the net charge asymmetry $A_\pm\equiv (N_+-N_-)/(N_++N_-)$ with a positive slope $r$, is comparable to the recent experimental results from RHIC. We identify "Freezeout Hole Effect", which is a direct consequence of the propagation of CMW during the realistic evolution of fireball, as the dominant physics effect responsible for a sizable contribution from the CMW to the slope parameter $r$, and emphasize that a proper treatment of the freeze out condition is crucial in any reliable computation of the CMW contribution to the slope parameter $r$. We also implement chiral phase transition effect in our study, which illustrates the sensitivity of the results to chiral phase transition temperature, and suggest that the CMW can be an important probe of QCD chiral phase transition. Our results on the impact parameter dependence compare well with the RHIC experiments. We also give predictions for the LHC energy.

Triangle anomaly in Weyl semi-metals

Weyl semimetals possess massless chiral quasi-particles, and are thus affected by the triangle anomalies. We discuss the features of the chiral magnetic and chiral vortical effects specific to Weyl semimetals, and then propose three novel phenomena caused by the triangle anomalies in this material: 1) anomaly cooling; 2) charge transport by soliton waves as described by the Burgers' equation, and 3) the shift of the BKT phase transition of superfluid vortices coupled to Weyl fermions. In addition, we establish the conditions under which the chiral magnetic current exists in real materials.

Universality of plasmon excitations in Dirac semimetals

The recent experimental discovery of ${\rm Cd_3 As_2}$ and ${\rm Na_3 Bi}$ Dirac semimetals enables the study of the properties of chiral quasi-particles in three spatial dimensions. As demonstrated by photoemission, Dirac semimetals are characterized by a linear dispersion relation for fermion quasi-particles, and thus represent three dimensional analogs of graphene. While the distinctive behavior of chiral fermions (e.g. Klein tunneling) is already evident in two dimensional graphene, the physics of chirality in three dimensions opens a number of new possibilities. In this paper we investigate the properties of the collective plasmon excitations in Dirac semimetals by using the methods of relativistic field theory. We find a strong and narrow plasmon excitation whose frequency is in the terahertz (THz) range which may be important for practical applications. The properties of the plasmon appear universal for all Dirac semimetals, due to the large degeneracy of the quasi-particles and the small Fermi velocity, $v_F \ll c$. This universality is closely analogous to the phenomenon of "dimensional transmutation", that is responsible for the emergence of dimensionful scales in relativistic field theories such as Quantum Chromodynamics, the modern theory of nuclear physics.

"Strongly interacting matter in magnetic fields": an overview

This is an introduction to the volume of Lecture Notes in Physics on "Strongly interacting matter in magnetic fields". The volume combines contributions written by a number of experts on different aspects of the problem. The response of QCD matter to intense magnetic fields has attracted a lot of interest recently. On the theoretical side, this interest stems from the possibility to explore the plethora of novel phenomena arising from the interplay of magnetic field with QCD dynamics. On the experimental side, the interest is motivated by the recent results on the behavior of quark-gluon plasma in a strong magnetic field created in relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. The purpose of this introduction is to provide a brief overview and a guide to the individual contributions where these topics are covered in detail.

Charged elliptic flow at zero charge asymmetry

The difference between the flow ellipticities of oppositely charged pions, Δv_2=v_2[π-]-v_2[π+], measured recently by STAR collaboration at RHIC shows a linear dependence on the event charge asymmetry A_+-={(N_+-N_-)/ (N_++N_-)}: Δv_2(A_+-)= Δv_2(0)+ r A_+- with a slope r>0 and a non-zero intercept Δv_2(0)>0 of order 10^{-4}. We point out two novel mechanisms which could explain the non-zero value of the charged elliptic flow Δv_2 at zero charge asymmetry A_+-=0, i.e., the non-zero positive intercept Δv_2(0). Both effects are due to the electric fields created by the colliding ions. These fields have quadrupole asymmetry of the magnitude and the sign needed to account for the nonzero intercept Δv_2(0) in the RHIC data. One of the mechanisms also involves chiral magnetic effect. This mechanism, although negligible at RHIC energies, may become important at LHC energies.

Chiral Electronics

We consider the properties of electric circuits involving Weyl semimetals. The existence of the anomaly-induced chiral magnetic current in a Weyl semimetal subjected to magnetic field causes an interesting and unusual behavior of such circuits. We consider two explicit examples: i) a circuit involving the "chiral battery" and ii) a circuit that can be used as a "quantum amplifier" of magnetic field. The unique properties of these circuits stem from the chiral anomaly and may be utilized for creating "chiral electronic" devices.

Flows and polarization of early photons with magnetic field at strong coupling

Recent experimental results from RHIC and LHC on hard photon emission rates in heavy-ion collisions indicate a large azimuthal asymmetry of photon emission rate parameterized by the elliptic flow v_2. Motivated by a recent proposal that the early magnetic field created by two colliding heavy-ions may be responsible for this large azimuthal asymmetry of photon emission rate, we compute the azimuthal dependence of the photon emission rate from a strongly coupled finite temperature plasma with magnetic field in the framework of gauge/gravity correspondence. We also propose and compute a new observable, "in/out-plane polarization asymmetry", constructed from the polarization dependence of the photon emission rates. We observe that both the azimuthal and polarization asymmetry of photon emissions are strongly affected by the triangle anomaly (chiral anomaly) for low frequency regime below 1 GeV.

Out-of-Equilibrium Chiral Magnetic Effect at Strong Coupling

We study the charge transports originating from triangle anomaly in out-of-equilibrium conditions in the framework of AdS/CFT correspondence at strong coupling, to gain useful insights on possible charge separation effects that may happen in the very early stages of heavy-ion collisions. We first construct a gravity background of a homogeneous mass shell with a finite (axial) charge density gravitationally collapsing to a charged blackhole, which serves as a dual model for out-of-equilibrium charged plasma undergoing thermalization. We find that a finite charge density in the plasma slows down the thermalization. We then study the out-of-equilibrium properties of Chiral Magnetic Effect and Chiral Magnetic Wave in this background. As the medium thermalizes, the magnitude of chiral magnetic conductivity and the response time delay grow. We find a dynamical peak in the spectral function of retarded current correlator, which we identify as an out-of-equilibrium chiral magnetic wave. The group velocity of the out-of-equilibrium chiral magnetic wave is shown to receive a dominant contribution from a non-equilibrium effect, making the wave moving much faster than in the equilibrium, which may enhance the charge transports via triangle anomaly in the early stage of heavy-ion collisions.

Spin Polarized Photons and Di-leptons from Axially Charged Plasma

Axial charge in a QCD plasma is P- and CP-odd. We propose and study P- and CP-odd observables in photon and di-lepton emissions from an axially charged QCD plasma, which may provide possible experimental evidences of axial charge fluctuation and triangle anomaly in the plasma created in heavy-ion collisions. Our observables measure spin alignments of the emitted photons and di-leptons, and are shown to be related to the imaginary part of chiral magnetic conductivity at finite frequency-momentum, which ultimately arises from the underlying triangle anomaly of the QCD plasma with a finite axial charge density. We present an exemplar computation of these observables in strongly coupled regime using AdS/CFT correspondence.

Holographic Pomeron and the Schwinger Mechanism

We revisit the problem of dipole-dipole scattering via exchanges of soft Pomerons in the context of holographic QCD. We show that a single closed string exchange contribution to the eikonalized dipole-dipole scattering amplitude yields a Regge behavior of the elastic amplitude; the corresponding slope and intercept are different from previous results obtained by a variational analysis of semi-classical surfaces. We provide a physical interpretation of the semi-classical worldsheets driving the Regge behavior for (-t)>0 in terms of worldsheet instantons. The latter describe the Schwinger mechanism for string pair creation by an electric field, where the longitudinal electric field E_L=σ_T tanh(χ/2) at the origin of this non-perturbative mechanism is induced by the relative rapidity χ of the scattering dipoles. Our analysis naturally explains the diffusion in the impact parameter space encoded in the Pomeron exchange; in our picture, it is due to the Unruh temperature of accelerated strings under the electric field. We also argue for the existence of a "micro-fireball" in the middle of the transverse space due to the soft Pomeron exchange, which may be at the origin of the thermal character of multiparticle production in ep/pp collisions. After summing over uncorrelated multi-Pomeron exchanges, we find that the total dipole-dipole cross section obeys the Froissart unitarity bound.

Anomalies and time reversal invariance in relativistic hydrodynamics: the second order and higher dimensional formulations

We present two new results on relativistic hydrodynamics with anomalies and external electromagnetic fields, "Chiral MagnetoHydroDynamics" (CMHD). First, we study CMHD in four dimensions at second order in the derivative expansion assuming the conformal/Weyl invariance. We classify all possible independent conformal second order viscous corrections to the energy-momentum tensor and to the U(1) current in the presence of external electric and/or magnetic fields, and identify eighteen terms that originate from the triangle anomaly. We then propose and motivate the following guiding principle to constrain the CMHD: the anomaly--induced terms that are even under the time reversal invariance should not contribute to the local entropy production rate. This allows us to fix thirteen out of the eighteen transport coefficients that enter the second order formulation of CMHD. We also relate one of our second order transport coefficients to the chiral shear waves. Our second subject is hydrodynamics with (N+1)-gon anomaly in an arbitrary 2N dimensions. The effects from the (N+1)-gon anomaly appear in hydrodynamics at (N-1)'th order in the derivative expansion, and we identify precisely N such corrections to the U(1) current. The time reversal constraint is powerful enough to allow us to find the analytic expressions for all transport coefficients. We confirm the validity of our results (and of the proposed guiding principle) by an explicit fluid/gravity computation within the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Anomaly-induced Quadrupole Moment of the Neutron in Magnetic Field

The neutrons cannot possess a quadrupole moment in the vacuum. Nevertheless, we show that in the presence of an external magnetic field the neutrons acquire a new type of quadrupole moment $Q^{ij}= χ\,σ^i B^j$ involving the components of spin and magnetic field. This "chiral magnetic" quadrupole moment arises from the interplay of the chiral anomaly and the magnetic field; we estimate its value for the neutron in the static limit, and find $χ\simeq 1.35\cdot10^{-2}\,{\rm fm}^4$. The detection of the quadrupole moment of the neutron would provide a novel test of the role of the chiral anomaly in low-energy QCD and can be possible in the presence of both magnetic and inhomogeneous electric fields. The quadrupole moment of the neutron may affect e.g. the properties of neutron stars and magnetars.

Chiral helix in AdS/CFT with flavor

The D3/D7 holographic model aims at a better approximation to QCD by adding to N=4 SYM theory N_f of N=2 supersymmetric hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation of SU(N_c) -- the "flavor fields" representing the quarks. Motivated by a recent observation of the importance of the Wess-Zumino-like (WZ) term for realizing the chiral magnetic effect within this model, we revisit the phase diagram of the finite temperature, massless D3/D7 model in the presence of external electric/magnetic fields and at finite chemical potential. We point out that the A-V-V triangle anomaly represented by the WZ term in the D7 brane probe action implies the existence of new phases that have been overlooked in the previous studies. In the case of an external magnetic field and at finite chemical potential, we find a "chiral helix" phase in which the U(1)_A angle of D7 brane embedding increases monotonically along the direction of the magnetic field -- this is a geometric realization of the chiral spiral phase in QCD. We also show that in the case of parallel electric and magnetic fields (E,B) there exists a phase in which the D7 brane spontaneously begins to rotate, so that the U(1)_A angle changes as a function of time -- this may be called the "spontaneous rotation" phase; it is a geometrical realization of a phase with non-zero chiral chemical potential. Our results call for a more thorough study of the (T,B,E,μ) phase diagram of the massless D3/D7 model taking a complete account of the WZ term. We also speculate about the possible phase diagram in the massive case.

Chiral Magnetic Wave

We consider a relativistic plasma containing charged chiral fermions in an external magnetic field, e.g a chirally symmetric quark-gluon plasma created in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We show that triangle anomalies imply the existence of a new type of collective gapless excitation in this system that stems from the coupling between the density waves of the electric and chiral charges; we call it "the Chiral Magnetic Wave" (CMW). The CMW exists even in a neutral plasma, i.e. in the absence of the axial and vector chemical potentials. We demonstrate the existence of CMW and study its properties using three different approaches: i) relativistic magnetohydrodynamics; ii) dimensional reduction to $(1+1)$ Sine-Gordon model, appropriate in a strong magnetic field; and iii) holographic QCD (Sakai-Sugimoto model), appropriate at strong coupling. We also briefly discuss the phenomenological implications of the CMW for heavy ion collisions.

Chiral magnetic wave at finite baryon density and the electric quadrupole moment of quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions

Chiral Magnetic Wave (CMW) is a gapless collective excitation of quark-gluon plasma in the presence of external magnetic field that stems from the interplay of Chiral Magnetic (CME) and Chiral Separation Effects (CSE); it is composed by the waves of the electric and chiral charge densities coupled by the axial anomaly. We consider CMW at finite baryon density and find that it induces the electric quadrupole moment of the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy ion collisions: the "poles" of the produced fireball (pointing outside of the reaction plane) acquire additional positive electric charge, and the "equator" acquires additional negative charge. We point out that this electric quadrupole deformation lifts the degeneracy between the elliptic flows of positive and negative pions leading to $v_2(π^+) < v_2(π^-)$, and estimate the magnitude of the effect.

Holographic two dimensional QCD and Chern-Simons term

We present a holographic realization of large Nc massless QCD in two dimensions using a D2/D8 brane construction. The flavor axial anomaly is dual to a three dimensional Chern-Simons term which turns out to be of leading order, and it affects the meson spectrum and holographic renormalization in crucial ways. The massless flavor bosons that exist in the spectrum are found to decouple from the heavier mesons, in agreement with the general lore of non-Abelian bosonization. We also show that an external dynamical photon acquires a mass through the three dimensional Chern-Simons term as expected from the Schwinger mechanism. Massless two dimensional QCD at large Nc exhibits anti-vector-meson dominance due to the axial anomaly.

Jet Quenching via Gravitational Radiation in Thermal AdS

We argue that classical bulk gravitational radiation effects in AdS/CFT, previously ignored because of their subleading nature in the 1/Nc-expansion, are magnified by powers of large Lorentz factors gamma for ultrarelativistic jets, thereby dominating other forms of jet energy loss in holography at finite temperature. We make use of the induced gravitational self-force in thermal AdS5 to estimate its effects. In a thermal medium, relativistic jets may loose most of their energy through longitudinal drag caused by the energy accumulated in their nearby field as they zip through the strongly coupled plasma.

Self-force and synchrotron radiation in odd space-time dimensions

Classical electrodynamics in flat 3+1 space-time has a very special retarded propagator delta(x^2) localized on the light cone, so that a particle does not interact with its past field. However, this is an exception, and in flat odd-dimensional space-times as well as generic curved spaces this is not so. In this work we show that the so called self-force is not only non-zero, but it matches (in 2+1 dimensions) the radiation reaction force derived from the radiation intensity.

Electrified plasma in AdS/CFT correspondence

We construct new gravity backgrounds holographic dual to neutral plasma with U(1) global symmetry in the presence of constant electric field, considering its full back-reactions to the metric. As the electric field and the induced current cause a net energy in-flow to the system, the plasma is continually heated up and the corresponding gravity solution has an expanding horizon. After proposing a consistent late-time expansion scheme, we present analytic solutions in the scheme up to next-leading order, and our solutions are new time-dependent solutions of 5D asymptotic AdS Einstein-Maxwell(-Chern-Simons) theory. To extract dual CFT stress tensor and U(1) current from the solutions, we perform a rigorous holographic renormalization of Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory including full back-reactions, which can in itself be an interesting addition to literatures. As by-products, we obtain interesting modifications of energy-momentum/current Ward identities due to the U(1) symmetry and its triangle anomaly.

Holographic aspects of three dimensional QCD from string theory

We study two aspects of 3D QCD with massless fermions in a holographic set-up from string theory, based on D3/D7 branes; parity anomaly and baryons as baby Skyrmions. We first give a novel account of parity anomaly of 3D QCD with odd number of flavors from the IR holographic viewpoint by observing a subtle point in D7 brane embeddings with a given fixed UV theory. We also discuss its UV origin in terms of weakly coupled D-brane pictures. We then focus on the parity-symmetric case of even number of N_F flavors, and study baryons in the holographic model. We identify the monopoles of U(N_F) gauge theory dynamically broken down to U(N_F/2)x U(N_F/2) in the holographic 4 dimensional bulk as a holographic counter-part of 3D baby-Skyrmions for baryons in large N limit, and work out some details how the mapping goes. In particular, we show that the correct baryon charges emerge from the Witten effect with a space-varying theta angle.

Holographic chiral magnetic spiral

We study the ground state of baryonic/axial matter at zero temperature chiral-symmetry broken phase under a large magnetic field, in the framework of holographic QCD by Sakai-Sugimoto. Our study is motivated by a recent proposal of chiral magnetic spiral phase that has been argued to be favored against previously studied phase of homogeneous distribution of axial/baryonic currents in terms of meson super-currents dictated by triangle anomalies in QCD. Our results provide an existence proof of chiral magnetic spiral in strong coupling regime via holography, at least for large axial chemical potentials, whereas we don't find the phenomenon in the case of purely baryonic chemical potential.

Holographic Chiral Magnetic Conductivity

We present holographic computations of the time-dependent chiral magnetic conductivity in the framework of gauge/gravity correspondence. Chiral magnetic effect is a phenomenon where an electromagnetic current parallel to an applied magnetic field is induced in the presence of a finite axial chemical potential. Motivated by a recent weak-coupling perturbative QCD calculation, our aim is to provide a couple of complementary computations for strongly coupled regime which might be relevant for strongly coupled RHIC plasma. We take two prototypical holographic set-ups for computing chiral magnetic conductivity; the first model is Einstein gravity with U(1)_L X U(1)_R Maxwell theory, and our second set-up is based on the Sakai-Sugimoto model in a deconfined and chiral symmetry restored phase. While the former takes into account full back-reaction while the latter not, the common feature is an important role played by the appropriate 5-dimensional Chern-Simons term corresponding to the 4-dimensional axial anomaly.

Holographic chiral shear waves from anomaly

We study dispersion relations of hydrodynamic waves of hot N=4 SYM plasma at strong coupling with a finite U(1) R-charge chemical potential via holography. We first provide complete equations of motion of linearized fluctuations out of a charged AdS black-hole background according to their helicity, and observe that helicity +1 and -1 transverse shear modes receive a new parity-odd contribution from the 5D Chern-Simons term, which is dual to 4D U(1)^3 anomaly. We present a systematic solution of the helicity +1,-1 wave equations in long wave-length expansion, and obtain the corresponding dispersion relations. The results depend on the sign of helicity, which may be called chiral shear waves.

Parity asymmetric boost invariant plasma in AdS/CFT correspondence

We consider a simple extension to the previously found gravity solution corresponding to a boost invariant Bjorken plasma, by allowing components that are asymmetric under parity flipping of the spacetime rapidity. Besides the question whether this may have a realization in collisions of different species of projectiles, such as lead-gold collision, our new time dependent gravity background can serve as a test ground for the recently proposed second order conformal viscous hydrodynamics. We find that non-trivial parity-asymmetric effects start to appear at second order in late time expansion, and we map the corresponding energy-momentum tensor to the second order conformal hydrodynamics to find certain second order transport coefficients. Our results are in agreement with the previous results in literature, giving one more corroborative evidence for the validity of the framework.

BPS String Webs in the 6-dim (2,0) Theories

In the Coulomb phase of the 6-dim (2,0) superconformal theories, the 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 BPS selfdual string webs are argued to exist such that the spatial SO(5) and internal SO(5) rotations are correlated. The basic constituents are 1/2 BPS strings and 1/4 BPS string junctions. One support comes from the existence of the similar BPS dyonic monostring webs in 5-dim maximally supersymmetric gauge theories. Another comes from the study of the supersymmetry of the intersecting M2 brane stripes terminating on M5 branes. We also discuss the related BPS webs in little string theories and other theories.

Holography, Dimensional Reduction and the Bekenstein Bound

We consider dimensional reduction of the lightlike holography of the covariant entropy bound from D+1 dimensional geometry of M X S to the D dimensional geometry M. With a warping factor, the local Bekenstein bound in D+1 dimensions leads to a more refined form of the bound from the D dimensional view point. With this new local Bekenstein bound, it is quite possible to saturate the lightlike holography even with nonvanishing expansion rate. With a Kaluza-Klein gauge field, the dimensional reduction implies a stronger bound where the energy momentum tensor contribution is replaced by the energy momentum tensor with the electromagnetic contribution subtracted.

Open/Closed Duality, Unstable D-Branes, and Coarse-Grained Closed Strings

At the final stage of unstable D-brane decay in the effective field theory approach, all energy and momentum of the initial state are taken up by two types of fluids, known as string fluid and tachyon matter. In this note, we compare motion of this fluid system to that of macroscopic collection of stretched closed strings and find a precise match at classical level. The string fluid reflects low frequency undulation of the stretched strings while the tachyon matter encodes the average effect of high frequency oscillations turned on those strings. In particular, the combined fluid system has been known to have a reduced speed of light, depending on the composition, and we show that this property is exactly reproduced in classical motion on the closed string side. Finally we illustrate how the tachyon matter may be viewed as an effective degrees of freedom carrying high frequency energy-momentum of Nambu-Goto strings by coarse-graining the dynamics of the latter.

The N=1* Theories on R^{1+2} X S^1 with Twisted Boundary Conditions

We explore the N=1* theories compactified on a circle with twisted boundary conditions. The gauge algebra of these theories are the so-called twisted affine Lie algebra. We propose the exact superpotentials by guessing the sum of all monopole-instanton contributions and also by requiring SL(2,Z) modular properties. The latter is inherited from the N=4 theory, which will be justified in the M theory setting. Interestingly all twisted theories possess full SL(2,Z) invariance, even though none of them are simply-laced. We further notice that these superpotentials are associated with certain integrable models widely known as elliptic Calogero-Moser models. Finally, we argue that the glueball superpotential must be independent of the compactification radius, and thus of the twisting, and confirm this by expanding it in terms of glueball superfield in weak coupling expansion.

Universal Extra Dimensions and the Higgs Boson Mass

We study the combined constraints on the compactification scale 1/R and the Higgs mass m_H in the standard model with one or two universal extra dimensions. Focusing on precision measurements and employing the Peskin-Takeuchi S and T parameters, we analyze the allowed region in the (m_H, 1/R) parameter space consistent with current experiments. For this purpose, we calculate complete one-loop KK mode contributions to S, T, and U, and also estimate the contributions from physics above the cutoff of the higher-dimensional standard model. A compactification scale 1/R as low as 250 GeV and significantly extended regions of m_H are found to be consistent with current precision data.
