Electromagnetic radii of the nucleon in soft-wall holographic QCD

We revisit the electromagnetic form factors of the proton and neutron in the original-minimal soft-wall holographic QCD, which has only two parameters, i.e., the mass scale $κ$ and the twist parameter of the nucleon $τ$. We first fix $τ=3$ by the hard scattering rule, and extract $κ=0.402~\text{GeV}$ from the world data (including the Mainz A1 data) of the Sachs magnetic form factor of the proton $G_M^p$. We then predict among others, the charge radius of the proton to be $\bf{r_{p}=0.831\,\pm\,0.008\,\,\text{fm}}$, in perfect agreement with the recent charge radius of the proton measured by the PRad collaboration at Jefferson Lab, and in agreement with the muonic hydrogen experiments. Our prediction for the proton elastic form factor ratio $μ_pG_E^p/G_M^p$ is also in very good agreement with the recent high precision Jefferson Lab recoil polarization experiment E08-007 for $Q^2=0.3\,-\,0.6~\text{GeV}^2$, and with the recent high precision Mainz A1 experiment for $Q^2< 0.13~\text{GeV}^2$.

Entanglement entropy and flow in two dimensional QCD: parton and string duality

We discuss quantum entanglement between fast and slow degrees of freedom, in a two dimensional (2D) large $N_c$ gauge theory with Dirac quarks, quantized on the light front. Using the 't Hooft wave functions, we construct the reduced density matrix for an interval in the momentum fraction $x$-space, and calculate its von Neumann entropy in terms of structure functions, that are measured by DIS on mesons (hadrons in general). We found that the entropy is bounded by an area law with logarithmic divergences, proportional to the rapidity of the meson. The evolution of the entanglement entropy with rapidity, is fixed by the cumulative singlet PDF, and bounded from above by a Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of 1. At low-$x$, the entanglement exhibits an asymptotic expansion, similar to the forward meson-meson scattering amplitude in the Regge limit. The evolution of the entanglement entropy in parton-$x$ per unit rapidity, measures the meson singlet PDF. The re-summed entanglement entropy along the single meson Regge trajectory, is string-like. We suggest that its extension to multi-meson states, models DIS scattering on a large 2D $^\prime$nucleus$^\prime$. The result, is a large rate of change of the entanglement entropy with rapidity, that matches the current Bekenstein-Bremermann bound for maximum quantum information flow. This mechanism may be at the origin of the large entropy deposition and rapid thermalization, reported in current heavy ion colliders, and may extend to future electron-ion colliders.

Hadronic structure on the light-front I.\ Instanton effects and quark-antiquark effective potentials

This is the first of a sequence of papers that address the non-perturbative origin of the central, and spin-dependent forces between quarks. Its main thrust is a focus on meson spectroscopy in the center of mass frame. We suggest a "dense instanton ensemble" model for the QCD vacuum, to explain the interquark forces in mesons, from quarkonia to heavy-light and light-light ones, to the extent it is possible. The sequels will show how to export these interactions to the light front, and derive the corresponding Hamiltonians and mesonic wavefunctions.

Hadronic structure on the light-front II: QCD strings, Wilson lines and potentials

This is the second paper on hadronic wave functions in the light front formulation. We first consider only confinement effects, using the classical Nambu-Gotto string with massive end points in the light cone gauge. We derive the light-front Hamiltonian and show how to solve it, using an expansion in suitable basis functions. We next discuss the correlators of Wilson lines on the light front, leading to an effective Hamiltonian that includes spin effects. At the end, we consider a separate problem of instanton-induced interactions, at the origin of the pion as a massless Goldstone mode on the light front.

Hyperons and $Θ_s^+$ in Holographic QCD

We revisit the holographic description of strange baryons in the context of the Sakai-Sugimoto construction, by considering the strange quark mass as heavy. Hyperons are described by a massive $(K,K^*)$ multiplet, bound to a light-flavor instanton in bulk, much in the spirit of the Callan-Klebanov construction. The modular Hamiltonian maps onto the Landau problem, a charged particle in a 2-dimensional external magnetic field, induced by the bulk Chern-Simons interaction, plus spin-orbit coupling. The ensuing holographic hyperon spectrum compares fairly with the empirical one. The holographic strange pentaquark baryon $Θ^+_s$ is shown to be unbound.

Instanton effects in Euclidean vacuum, real time production and in the light front wave functions

Nontrivial topological structures of non-Abelian gauge fields were discovered in the 1970's. Instanton solutions, describing vacuum tunneling through topological barriers, have fermionic zero modes which are at the origin of $^\prime$t Hooft effective Lagrangian. In the 1980's instanton ensembles have been used to explain chiral symmetry breaking. In the 1990's a large set of numerical simulations were performed deriving Euclidean correlation functions. The special role of scalar diquarks in nucleons, and color superconductivity in dense quark matter have been elucidated. In these lectures, we discuss further developments of physics related to gauge topology. We show that the instanton-antiinstanton "streamline" configurations describe "sphaleron transitions" in high energy collisions, which result in production of hadronic clusters with nontrivial topological/chiral charges. (They are not yet observed, but discussions of dedicated experiments at LHC and RHIC are ongoing.) Another new direction is instanton effects in hadronic spectroscopy, both in the rest frame and on the light front. We will discuss their role in central and spin-dependent potentials, formfactors and antiquark nuclear "sea". Finally, we summarize the advances in the semiclassical theory of deconfinement, and chiral phase transitions at finite temperature, in QCD and in some of its "deformed" versions.

Meson structure on the light-front III : The Hamiltonian, heavy quarkonia, spin and orbit mixing

This is the third paper on hadronic light front wave functions (LFWFs). We derive a light front Hamiltonian from first principles using the key features of the QCD vacuum at low resolution. In the first approximation, it gives transverse oscillator and longitudinal harmonic modes and yields the correct Regge trajectories. For heavy quarkonia, we compare its spectrum to that obtained from the usual Schroedinger equation in the rest frame. We use the same approach for light quarks, and investigate the role of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in the quark-antiquark sector. We then study spin-spin and spin-orbit mixing, resulting in e.g. quadrupole moments of vector mesons. For the light mesons, we show how to extend the famed t$^\prime$Hooft interaction to the light front, which solves the U(1) problem and helps produce a light pion. We use the ensuing light front wavefunctions, to derive the pertinent parton distribution functions, parton amplitudes and low energy constants.

Rapidity evolution of the entanglement entropy in quarkonium: parton and string duality

We investigate the quantum entanglement in rapidity space of the soft gluon wave function of a quarkonium, in theories with non-trivial rapidity evolutions. We found that the rapidity evolution drastically changes the behavior of the entanglement entropy, at any given order in perturbation theory. At large $N_c$, the reduced density matrices that "resum" the leading rapidity-logs can be explicitly constructed, and shown to satisfy Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK)-like evolution equations. We study their entanglement entropy in a simplified $1+1$ toy model, and in 3D QCD. The entanglement entropy in these cases, after re-summation, is shown to saturate the Kolmogorov-Sinai bound of 1. Remarkably, in 3D QCD the essential growth rate of the entanglement entropy is found to vanish at large rapidities, a result of kinematical "quenching" in transverse space. The one-body reduction of the entangled density matrix obeys a BFKL evolution equation, which can be recast as an evolution in an emergent AdS space, at large impact-parameter and large rapidity. This observation allows the extension of the perturbative wee parton evolution at low-x, to a dual non-perturbative evolution of string bits in curved AdS$_5$ space, with manifest entanglement entropy in the confining regime.

Holographic charm and bottom pentaquarks I: Mass spectra with spin effects

We revisit the three non-strange pentaquarks $[\frac 12\frac 12^-]_{S=0,1}$ and $[\frac 12\frac 32^-]_{S=1}$ predicted using the holographic dual description, where chiral and heavy quark symmetry are manifest in the triple limit of a large number of colors, large quark mass and strong $^\prime$t Hooft gauge coupling. In the heavy quark limit, the pentaquarks with internal heavy quark spin $S$ are all degenerate. The holographic pentaquarks are dual to an instanton bound to heavy mesons in bulk, without the shortcomings related to the nature of the interaction and the choice of the hard core inherent to the molecular constructions. We explicitly derive the spin-spin and spin-orbit couplings arising from next to leading order in the heavy quark mass, and lift totally the internal spin degeneray, in fair agreement with the newly reported charmed pentaquarks from LHCb. New charm and bottom pentaquark states are predicted.

Holographic charm and bottom pentaquarks II: Open and hidden decay widths

We analyze the decay modes of the three $[\frac 12\frac 12^-]_{S=0,1}$ and $[\frac 12\frac 32^-]_{S=1}$ non-strange pentaquarks with hidden charm and bottom, predicted by holographic QCD in the heavy quark limit. In leading order, the pentaquarks %are composed of heavy-light mesons in bulk bound to an instanton core. They are degenerate and stable by heavy quark symmetry. At next to leading order, the spin interactions lift the degeneracy and cause the pentaquarks to decay. We show that the open charm (bottom) decay modes dwarf the hidden charm (bottom) ones, with total widths that are consistent with those recently reported by LHCb for charm pentaquarks. Predictions for bottom pentaquarks are given.

Holographic charm and bottom pentaquarks III: Excitations through photo-production of heavy mesons

We consider the photo-excitation of charm and bottom pentaquarks with the holographic assignments $[\frac 12\frac 12^-]_{S=0,1}$ and $[\frac 12\frac 32^-]_{S=1}$, in the photo-production of heavy vector mesons such as charmonia and bottomonia near threshold. We use a Witten diagram to combine the s-channel photo-excitation of holographic pentaquarks with a massive t-channel graviton or tensor glueball exchange, to extract the scattering amplitude for heavy meson photo-production in the threshold region. The pentaquark signal is too weak to be detected at current electron facilities.

Pion and Kaon Distribution Amplitudes up to twist-3 in the QCD Instanton Vacuum

We discuss the pion and kaon distribution amplitudes up to twist-3 in the context of the random instanton vacuum (RIV). We construct explicitly the pertinent quasi-pion and quasi-kaon distributions in the RIV, and analyze them in leading order in the diluteness factor, at a resolution fixed by the inverse instanton size. The distribution amplitudes (DA) follow from the large momentum limit. The results at higher resolution are discussed using QCD evolution, and compared to their asymptotic limits and some lattice results.

Small size instanton contributions to the quark quasi-PDF and matching kernel

We investigate the non-perturbative contribution of instantons to current matching kernels used in the context of the large momentum effective theory (LaMET). We derive explicitly these contributions using first principle semi-classical calculus for the unpolarized and polarized quark parton distributions and the matching kernel, and show that they are part of a trans-series expansion. These contributions are substantial at current lattice matching momenta.

Pion and Kaon parton distributions in the QCD instanton vacuum

We discuss a general diagrammatic description of n-point functions in the QCD instanton vacuum that resums planar diagrams, enforces gauge invariance and spontaneously broken chiral symmetry. We use these diagrammatic rules to derive the pion and kaon quasi-parton amplitude and distribution functions at leading order in the instanton packing fraction for large but finite momentum. The instanton and anti-instanton zero modes and non-zero modes are found to contribute to the quasi-distributions, but the latter are shown to drop out in the large momentum limit. The pertinent pion and kaon parton distribution amplitudes and functions are made explicit at the low renormalization scale fixed by the inverse instanton size. Assuming that factorization holds, the pion parton distributions are evolved to higher renormalization scales with one-loop DGLAP and compared to existing data.

Deep Inelastic Scattering on an Extremal RN-AdS Black Hole II: Holographic Fermi Surface

We consider deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a dense nucleus described as an extremal RN-AdS black hole with holographic quantum fermions in the bulk. We evaluate the 1-loop fermion contribution to the R-current on the charged black hole, and map it on scattering off a Fermi surface of a dense and large nucleus with fixed atomic number. Near the black hole horizon, the geometry is that of AdS$_2\times $R$^3$ where the fermions develop an emergent Fermi surface with anomalous dimensions. DIS scattering off these fermions yields to anomalous partonic distributions mostly at large-x, as well as modified hard scattering rules. The pertinent R-ratio for the black hole is discussed. For comparison, the structure functions and the R-ratio in the probe or dilute limit with no back-reaction on the geometry, are also derived. We formulate a hybrid holographic model for DIS scattering on heavy and light nuclei, which compares favorably to the existing data for Pb, Au, Fe, C and He over a wide range of parton-x.

Diffractive photoproduction of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ using holographic QCD: gravitational form factors and GPD of gluons in the proton

We present a holographic analysis of diffractive photoproducton of charmonium $J/ψ$ and upsilonium $Υ$ on a proton, considered as a bulk Dirac fermion, for all ranges of $\sqrt{s}$, i.e., from near threshold to very high energy. Using the bulk wave functions of the proton and vector mesons, within holographic QCD, and employing Witten diagrams in the bulk, we compute the diffractive photoproduction amplitude of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$. The holographic amplitude shows elements of the strictures of vector meson dominance (VMD). It is dominated by the exchange of a massive graviton or $2^{++}$ glueball resonances near threshold, and its higher spin-j counterparts that reggeize at higher energies. Both the differential and total cross sections are controlled by the gravitational form factor $A(t)$, and compare well to the recent results reported by the GlueX collaboration near threshold and the world data at large $\sqrt{s}$. The holographic gravitational form factors, including the D-term, which is due to the exchange of massive spin-0 glueballs, are in good agreement with lattice simulations. We use it to extract the holographic pressure and shear forces inside the proton. Finally, using a pertinent integral representation of the holographic gravitational form factor $A(t)$ near threshold, and its Pomeron counterpart way above threshold, we extract the generalized parton distribution (GPD) of gluons inside the proton at different resolutions.

Heavy Holographic Exotics: Tetraquarks as Efimov States

We provide a holographic description of non-strange multiquark exotics as compact topological molecules by binding heavy-light mesons to a tunneling configuration in D8-D$\bar 8$ that is homotopic to the vacuum state with fixed Chern-Simons number. In the tunneling process, the heavy-light mesons transmute to fermions. Their binding is generic and arises from a trade-off between the dipole attraction induced by the Chern-Simons term and the U(1) fermionic repulsion. In the heavy quark limit, the open-flavor tetraquark exotics $QQ\bar q\bar q$ and $\bar Q\bar Q qq$, emerge as bound Efimov states in a degenerate multiplet $IJ^π=(00^+ , 01^+)$ with opposite intrinsic Chern-Simons numbers $\pm \frac 12$. The hidden-flavor tetraquark exotics such as $Q\bar Q q\bar q$, $QQ\bar Q\bar q$ and $QQ\bar Q\bar Q$ as compact topological molecules are unbound. Other exotics are also discussed.

We consider deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a large nucleus described as an extremal RN-AdS black hole using the holographic principle. Using the R-current correlators we determine the structure functions as a function Bjorken-x, and map it on a finite but large nucleus with fixed atomic number. The R-ratio of the nuclear structure functions exhibit strong shadowing at low-x.

Chiral Random Matrix Model at Finite Chemical Potential: Characteristic Determinant and Edge Universality

We derive an exact formula for the stochastic evolution of the characteristic determinant of a class of deformed Wishart matrices following from a chiral random matrix model of QCD at finite chemical potential. In the WKB approximation, the characteristic determinant describes a sharp droplet of eigenvalues that deforms and expands at large stochastic times. Beyond the WKB limit, the edges of the droplet are fuzzy and described by universal edge functions. At the chiral point, the characteristic determinant in the microscopic limit is universal. Remarkably, the physical chiral condensate at finite chemical potential may be extracted from current and quenched lattice Dirac spectra using the universal edge scaling laws, without having to solve the QCD sign problem.

CP violation during the electroweak sphaleron transitions

We suggest a specific semiclassical background field, the so called pure gauge sphaleron explosion, to evaluate the magnitude of the CP violation stemming from the standard phase of the CKM matrix. We use it to evaluate the matrix elements of some next-to-leading order effective CP-violating operators suggested in the literature. We also derive the scale dependence of the corresponding coefficients. Finally, we discuss the expected magnitude of the CP violation in the cold electroweak scenario.

Light Adjoint Quarks in the Instanton-Dyon Liquid Model IV

We discuss the instanton-dyon liquid model with $N_f$ Majorana quark flavors in the adjoint representation of color $SU_c(2)$ at finite temperature. We briefly recall the index theorem on $S^1\times R^3$ for twisted adjoint fermions in a BPS dyon background of arbitrary holonomy, and use the ADHM construction to explicit the adjoint anti-periodic zero modes. We use these results to derive the partition function of an interacting instanton-dyon ensemble with $N_f$ light and anti-periodic adjoint quarks. We develop the model in details by mapping the theory on a 3-dimensional quantum effective theory with adjoint quarks with manifest $SU(N_f)\times Z_{4N_f}$ symmetry. Using a mean-field analysis at weak coupling and strong screening, we show that center symmetry requires the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry, which is shown to only take place for $N_f=1$. For a sufficiently dense liquid, we find that the ground state is center symmetric and breaks spontaneously flavor symmetry through $SU(N_f)\times Z_{4N_f}\rightarrow O(N_f)$. As the liquid dilutes with increasing temperature, center symmetry and chiral symmetry are restored. We present numerical and analytical estimates for the transition temperatures.

QCD Dirac Spectrum at Finite Chemical Potential: Anomalous Effective Action, Berry Phase and Composite Fermions

We show that the QCD Dirac spectrum at finite chemical potential using a matrix model in the spontaneously broken phase, is amenable to a generic 2-dimensional effective action. The eigenvalues form a droplet with strong screening and plasmon oscillation. The droplet is threaded by a magnetic vortex which is at the origin of a Berry phase. For quarks in the complex or Dirac representation, the anomalous transport in the droplet of eigenvalues bear some similarities with that in droplets of composite fermions at half filling suggesting that the latters maybe Dirac fermions.

The Instanton-Dyon Liquid Model III: Finite Chemical Potential

We discuss an extension of the instanton-dyon liquid model that includes light quarks at finite chemical potential in the center symmetric phase. We develop the model in details for the case of SU_c(2)\times SU_f(2) by mapping the theory on a 3-dimensional quantum effective theory. We analyze the different phases in the mean-field approximation. We extend this analysis to the general case of SU_c(N_c)\times SU_f(N_f) and note that the chiral and diquark pairings are always comparable.

The Instanton-Dyon Liquid Model V: Twisted Light Quarks

We discuss an extension of the instanton-dyon liquid model that includes twisted light quarks in the fundamental representation with explicit $Z_{N_c}$ symmetry for the case with equal number of colors $N_c$ and flavors $N_f$. We map the model on a 3-dimensional quantum effective theory, and analyze it in the mean-field approximation. The effective potential and the vacuum chiral condensates are made explicit for $N_f=N_c=2, 3$. The low temperature phase is center symmetric but breaks spontaneously flavor symmetry with $N_f-1$ massless pions. The high temperature phase breaks center symmetry but supports finite and unequal quark condensates.

Confining Dyon-Anti-Dyon Coulomb Liquid Model I

We revisit the dyon-anti-dyon liquid model for the Yang-Mills confining vacuum discussed by Diakonov and Petrov, by retaining the effects of the classical interactions mediated by the streamline between the dyons and anti-dyons. In the SU(2) case the model describes a 4-component strongly interacting Coulomb liquid in the center symmetric phase. We show that in the linearized screening approximation the streamline interactions yield Debye-Huckel type corrections to the bulk parameters such as the pressure and densities, but do not alter significantly the large distance behavior of the correlation functions in leading order. The static scalar and charged structure factors are consistent with a plasma of a dyon-anti-dyon liquid with a Coulomb parameter $Γ_{D\bar D}\approx 1$ in the dyon-anti-dyon channel. Heavy quarks are still linearly confined and the large spatial Wilson loops still exhibit area laws in leading order. The t$^\prime$ Hooft loop is shown to be 1 modulo Coulomb corrections.

Hydrodynamical Description of the QCD Dirac Spectrum at Finite Chemical Potential

We present a hydrodynamical description of the QCD Dirac spectrum at finite chemical potential as an uncompressible droplet in the complex eigenvalue space. For a large droplet, the fluctuation spectrum around the hydrostatic solution is gapped by a longitudinal Coulomb plasmon, and exhibits a frictionless odd viscosity. The stochastic relaxation time for the restoration/breaking of chiral symmetry is set by twice the plasmon frequency. The leading droplet size correction to the relaxation time is fixed by a universal odd viscosity to density ratio $η_O/ρ_0=(β-2)/4$ for the three Dyson ensembles $β=1,2,4$.

Hydrodynamics of the Chiral Dirac Spectrum

We derive a hydrodynamical description of the eigenvalues of the chiral Dirac spectrum in the vacuum and in the large $N$ (volume) limit. The linearized hydrodynamics supports sound waves. The stochastic relaxation of the eigenvalues is captured by a hydrodynamical instanton configuration which follows from a pertinent form of Euler equation. The relaxation from a phase of localized eigenvalues and unbroken chiral symmetry to a phase of de-localized eigenvalues and broken chiral symmetry occurs over a time set by the speed of sound. We show that the time is $Δτ=πρ(0)/2βN$ with $ρ(0)$ the spectral density at zero virtuality and $β=1,2,4$ for the three Dyson ensembles that characterize QCD with different quark representations in the ergodic regime.

Hydrodynamics of the Polyakov Line in SU$(N_c)$ Yang-Mills

We discuss a hydrodynamical description of the eigenvalues of the Polyakov line at large but finite $N_c$ for Yang-Mills theory in even and odd space-time dimensions. The hydro-static solutions for the eigenvalue densities are shown to interpolate between a uniform distribution in the confined phase and a localized distribution in the de-confined phase. The resulting critical temperatures are in overall agreement with those measured on the lattice over a broad range of $N_c$, and are consistent with the string model results at $N_c=\infty$. The stochastic relaxation of the eigenvalues of the Polyakov line out of equilibrium is captured by a hydrodynamical instanton. An estimate of the probability of formation of a Z(N$_c)$ bubble using a piece-wise sound wave is suggested.

Light Quarks in the Screened Dyon-Anti-Dyon Coulomb Liquid Model II

We discuss an extension of the dyon-anti-dyon liquid model that includes light quarks in the dense center symmetric Coulomb phase. In this work, like in our previous one, we use the simplest color SU(2) group. We start with a single fermion flavor $N_f=1$ and explicitly map the theory onto a 3-dimensional quantum effective theory with a fermion that is only U$_V(1)$ symmetric. We use it to show that the dense center symmetric plasma develops, in the mean field approximation, a nonzero chiral condensate, although the ensuing Goldstone mode is massive due to the U$_A(1)$ axial-anomaly. We estimate the chiral condensate and $σ,η$ meson masses for $N_f=1$. We then extend our analysis to several flavors $N_f>1$ and colors $N_c>2$ and show that center symmetry and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking disappear simultaneously when $x=N_f/N_c\geq 2$ in the dense plasma phase. A reorganization of the dense plasma phase into a gas of dyon-antidyon molecules restores chiral symmetry, but may preserve center symmetry in the linearized approximation. We estimate the corresponding critical temperature.

Streched String with Self-Interaction at the Hagedorn Point: Spatial Sizes and Black Hole

We analyze the length, mass and spatial distribution of a discretized transverse string in $D_\perp$ dimensions with fixed end-points near its Hagedorn temperature. We suggest that such a string may dominate the (holographic) Pomeron kinematics for dipole-dipole scattering at intermediate and small impact parameters. Attractive self-string interactions cause the transverse string size to contract away from its diffusive size, a mechanism reminiscent of the string-black-hole transmutation. The string shows sizable asymmetries in the transverse plane that translate to primordial azimuthal asymmetries in the stringy particle production in the Pomeron kinematics for current pp and pA collisions at collider energies.

Stretched String with Self-Interaction at High Resolution: Spatial Sizes and Saturation

We model the (holographic) QCD Pomeron as a long and stretched (fixed impact parameter) transverse quantum string in flat $D_\perp=3$ dimensions. After discretizing the string in $N$ string bits, we analyze its length, mass and spatial distribution for large $N$ or low-x ($x=1/N$), and away from its Hagedorn point. The string bit distribution shows sizable asymmetries in the transverse plane that may translate to azimuthal asymmetries in primordial particle production in the Pomeron kinematics, and the flow moments in minimum bias $pp$ and $pA$ events. At moderately low-x and relatively small string self-interactions $g_s\approx α_s$ (the gauge coupling), a pre-saturation phase is identified whereby the string transverse area undergoes a sharp transition from a large diffusive growth to a small fixed size area set by few string lengths $l_s$. For lower values of $x$ the transverse string bit density is shown to increase as $1/x$ before saturating at the Bekenstein bound of one bit per Planck area with the Planck length $l_P/l_s\approx α_s^{2/3}$. We argue that the effects of the AdS$_5$ curvature on the interacting string maybe estimated using an effective transverse dimension between the interacting string bits. The result is a smoother transition with a transverse string bit density increasing as $1/x^{0.31}$.

A Stringy (Holographic) Pomeron with Extrinsic Curvature

We model the soft pomeron in QCD using a scalar Polyakov string with extrinsic curvature in the bottom-up approach of holographic QCD. The overall dipole-dipole scattering amplitude in the soft pomeron kinematics is shown to be sensitive to the extrinsic curvature of the string for finite momentum transfer. The characteristics of the diffractive peak in the differential elastic $pp$ scattering are affected by a small extrinsic curvature of the string.

Electromagnetic Radiation in Hot QCD Matter: Rates, Electric Conductivity, Flavor Susceptibility and Diffusion

We discuss the general features of the electromagnetic radiation from a thermal hadronic gas as constrained by chiral symmetry. The medium effects on the electromagnetic spectral functions and the partial restoration of chiral symmetry are quantified in terms of the pion densities. The results are compared with the electromagnetic radiation from a strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma in terms of the leading gluon condensate operators. We use the spectral functions as constrained by the emission rates to estimate the electric conductivity, the light flavor susceptibility and diffusion constant across the transition from the correlated hadronic gas to a strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma.

New Regimes of Stringy (Holographic) Pomeron and High Multiplicity pp and pA Collisions

Holographic AdS/QCD models of the Pomeron unite a string-based description of hadronic reactions of the pre-QCD era with the perturbative BFKL approach. The specific version we will use due to Stoffers and Zahed, is based on a semiclassical quantization of a "tube" (closed string exchange or open string virtual pair production) in its Euclidean formulation using the scalar Polyakov action. This model has a number of phenomenologically successful results. The periodicity of a coordinate around the tube allows the introduction of a Matsubara time and therefore an effective temperature Teff on the string. We observe that at the LHC energies and for sufficiently small impact parameter, Teff approaches and even exceeds the Hagedorn temperature of the QCD strings. Based on studies of the stringy thermodynamics of pure gauge theories we suggest that there should exist two new regimes of the Pomeron: the "near-critical" and the "post-critical" ones. In the former one, string excitations create a high entropy "string ball", with high energy and entropy but small pressure/free energy. If heavy enough this ball becomes a (dual) black hole (BH). As the intrinsic temperature of the string exceeds the Hagedorn temperature, the ball becomes a post-critical explosive "QGP ball". The hydrodynamical explosion resulting from this scenario was predicted by us to have radial flow exceeding that ever seen even in heavy ion collisions, which was recently confirmed by CMS and ALICE at LHC. We also discuss the elastic scattering profile, finding some hints for new phases in it, as well as two-particle correlations.

P-Odd Pion Azimuthal Charge Correlations in Heavy Ion Collisions

We argue that the large instanton induced Pauli form factor in polarized proton-proton scattering may cause, through topological fluctuations, substantial charge-dependent azimuthal correlations for pi^+/pi^- production in peripheral heavy ion collisions both at RHIC and LHC, thanks to the large induced magnetic field. Our results compare favorably to the measured pion azimuthal correlations by the STAR and ALICE collaborations.

We discuss the quark and gluon condensates in the presence of a rectangular Wilson loop using the QCD instanton vacuum with three light dynamical quarks. Spectral Functions in V-QCD with Matter: Masses, Susceptibilities, Diffusion and Conductivity

We consider a holographic model of QCD in the Veneziano limit of a large number of colors $N_c$ and flavors $N_f$ but fixed $x=N_f/N_c$ (V-QCD). The model exhibits a first order deconfined but chirally broken transition, followed by a second order chirally restored transition in the $μ-T$ plane for a range of plausible holographic parameters. We study the quasi-normal mode spectrum, and derive the pertinent vector and axial spectral functions across the transition regions. The pole masses, susceptibilities, diffusion constants and electric conductivity are also discussed. In particular, the pole masses are found to survive the deconfining transition, to quickly dissolve in the the chirally restored phase by developing substantial widths. The flavor electric conductivities arise sharply in the transition region. The flavor susceptibility is shown to be consistent with the one derived from bulk thermodynamics.

Stringy Pomeron: Entropy and Shear Viscosity

We model the soft pomeron contribution to dipole-dipole scattering as a closed string exchange in AdS5 with a wall. The exchange of closed and long strings is characterized by an apparent Unruh temperature and entropy that are caused by the rapidity interval chi of the collision. We show that the primordial transverse shear viscosity to transverse entropy density ratio is eta-perp/s-perp=(pi k/chi)^2/(8 pi) for scattering dipoles of N-ality k, vanishing at large chi.

Chiral and Gravitational Anomalies on Fermi Surfaces

A Fermi surface threaded by a Berry phase can be described by the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term. After gauging, it produces a five-dimensional Chern-Simons term in the action. We show how this Chern-Simons term captures the essence of the Abelian, non-Abelian, and mixed gravitational anomalies in describing both in- and off-equilibrium phenomena. In particular we derive a novel contribution to the Chiral Vortical Effect that arises when a temperature gradient is present. We also discuss the issue of universality of the anomalous currents.

Chiral Disorder and Random Matrix Theory with Magnetism

We revisit the concept of chiral disorder in QCD in the presence of a QED magnetic field |eH|. Weak magnetism corresponds to |eH| < 1/rho^2 with rho\approx (1/3) fm the vacuum instanton size, while strong magnetism the reverse. Asymptotics (ultra-strong magnetism) is in the realm of perturbative QCD. We analyze weak magnetism using the concept of the quark return probability in the diffusive regime of chiral disorder. The result is in agreement with expectations from chiral perturbation theory. We analyze strong and ultra-strong magnetism in the ergodic regime using random matrix theory including the effects of finite temperature. The strong magnetism results are in agreement with the currently reported lattice data in the presence of a small shift of the Polyakov line. The ultra-strong magnetism results are consistent with expectations from perturbative QCD. We suggest a chiral random matrix effective action with matter and magnetism to analyze the QCD phase diagram near the critical points under the influence of magnetism.

High Multiplicity pp and pA Collisions: Hydrodynamics at its Edge

With growing multiplicity, the pp and pA collisions enter the domain where the macroscopic description (thermodynamics and hydrodynamics) becomes applicable. We discuss this situation, first with simplified thought experiments, then with some idealized representative cases, and finally address the real data. For clarity, we don't do it numerically but analytically, using the Gubser solution. We found that the radial flow is expected to increase from central AA to central pA, while the elliptic flow decreases, with higher harmonics being comparable. In the second part of the paper we approach the problem from the opposite side, using a string-based Pomeron model. We extensively study the magnitude and distribution of the viscous corrections, in Navier-Stokes and Israel-Stuart approximations, ending with higher gradient re-summation proposed by Lublinsky and Shuryak. We found those corrections growing, from AA to pA to pp, but remaining at the manageable size even in the last case.

Anomalous Chiral Fermi Surface

We provide a geometrical argument for the emergence of a Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term for a Fermi surface threaded by a Berry curvature. In the presence of external fields, the gauged WZW term yields a chiral (triangle) anomaly for the fermionic current at the edge of the Fermi surface. Fermion number is conserved though since the Berry curvatures occur always in pairs with opposite (monopole) charge. The anomalous vector and axial currents for a a fermionic fluid at low temperature threaded by pairs of Berry curvatures are discussed. The leading temperature correction to the chiral vortical effect in a slowly rotating Fermi surface threaded by a Berry curvature maybe tied to the gravitational anomaly.

Holographic Jets in an Expanding Plasma

We use the holographic principle to study quark jets with trailing strings in an expanding plasma that asymptotes Bjorken hydrodynamics. We make use of the fact that the trailing string is the locus of the light delay in bulk to obtain the explicit form for quark jets in the expanding plasma. From the trailing string solution we calculate the drag coefficient of a heavy quark in the strongly coupled expanding plasma. The energy scaling of the maximum penetration length of an ultrarelativistic light quark jet using light rays in bulk is estimated.

Holographic Pomeron and Entropy

In dipole-dipole scattering at large rapidity χ={\rm ln}(s/s_0), the induced instanton on the string worldsheet carries entropy S_k=2(α_{Pk}-1)χwith α_{Pk}-1 the pomeron intercept for a dipole source of N-ality k. This stringy entropy is neither coherent nor thermal. We argue that it is released promptly over a time t_R\approx (b / χ)^3 / (4 α') with α'/2 the pomeron slope and b the impact parameter. This stringy entropy may explain the 3/2 jump in the total charged multiplicities at about 10 participants reported over a wide range of collider energies by PHOBOS. We predict the charged multiplicities in pp, pA and AA collisions at LHC.

Holographic Pomeron and the Schwinger Mechanism

We revisit the problem of dipole-dipole scattering via exchanges of soft Pomerons in the context of holographic QCD. We show that a single closed string exchange contribution to the eikonalized dipole-dipole scattering amplitude yields a Regge behavior of the elastic amplitude; the corresponding slope and intercept are different from previous results obtained by a variational analysis of semi-classical surfaces. We provide a physical interpretation of the semi-classical worldsheets driving the Regge behavior for (-t)>0 in terms of worldsheet instantons. The latter describe the Schwinger mechanism for string pair creation by an electric field, where the longitudinal electric field E_L=σ_T tanh(χ/2) at the origin of this non-perturbative mechanism is induced by the relative rapidity χ of the scattering dipoles. Our analysis naturally explains the diffusion in the impact parameter space encoded in the Pomeron exchange; in our picture, it is due to the Unruh temperature of accelerated strings under the electric field. We also argue for the existence of a "micro-fireball" in the middle of the transverse space due to the soft Pomeron exchange, which may be at the origin of the thermal character of multiparticle production in ep/pp collisions. After summing over uncorrelated multi-Pomeron exchanges, we find that the total dipole-dipole cross section obeys the Froissart unitarity bound.

Holographic Pomeron: Saturation and DIS

We briefly review the approach to dipole-dipole scattering in holographic QCD developed in ARXIV:1202.0831. The Pomeron is modeled by exchanging closed strings between the dipoles and yields Regge behavior for the elastic amplitude. We calculate curvature corrections to this amplitude in both a conformal and confining background, identifying the holographic direction with the virtuality of the dipoles. The it wee-dipole density is related to the string tachyon diffusion in both virtuality and the transverse directions. We give an explicit derivation of the dipole saturation momentum both in the conformal and confining metric. Our holographic result for the dipole-dipole cross section and the it wee-dipole density in the conformal limit are shown to be identical in form to the BFKL pomeron result when the non-critical string transverse dimension is $D_\perp=3$. The total dipole-dipole cross section is compared to DIS data from HERA.

Single Spin Asymmetry through QCD Instantons

We revisit the effects of QCD instantons in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). We show that large single spin asymmetry (SSA) effects can be induced in longitudinally and transversely polarized proton targets. The results are in agreement with most of the reported data for pion and kaon production. The same effects are found to be important in polarized proton on proton scattering for both charged and chargeless pion productions. The results agree with the reported data in a wide range of \sqrt{s} = 19.4-200 GeV. We predict the SSA for π^\pm production in p_\uparrow p in the collider range of \sqrt{s} = 62.4-500 GeV. The backward π^{\pm} and π^0 productions for the SSA in p_\uparrow p collisions are predicted to coincide at large \sqrt{s}.

Anomaly-induced Quadrupole Moment of the Neutron in Magnetic Field

The neutrons cannot possess a quadrupole moment in the vacuum. Nevertheless, we show that in the presence of an external magnetic field the neutrons acquire a new type of quadrupole moment $Q^{ij}= χ\,σ^i B^j$ involving the components of spin and magnetic field. This "chiral magnetic" quadrupole moment arises from the interplay of the chiral anomaly and the magnetic field; we estimate its value for the neutron in the static limit, and find $χ\simeq 1.35\cdot10^{-2}\,{\rm fm}^4$. The detection of the quadrupole moment of the neutron would provide a novel test of the role of the chiral anomaly in low-energy QCD and can be possible in the presence of both magnetic and inhomogeneous electric fields. The quadrupole moment of the neutron may affect e.g. the properties of neutron stars and magnetars.

Holographic two dimensional QCD and Chern-Simons term

We present a holographic realization of large Nc massless QCD in two dimensions using a D2/D8 brane construction. The flavor axial anomaly is dual to a three dimensional Chern-Simons term which turns out to be of leading order, and it affects the meson spectrum and holographic renormalization in crucial ways. The massless flavor bosons that exist in the spectrum are found to decouple from the heavier mesons, in agreement with the general lore of non-Abelian bosonization. We also show that an external dynamical photon acquires a mass through the three dimensional Chern-Simons term as expected from the Schwinger mechanism. Massless two dimensional QCD at large Nc exhibits anti-vector-meson dominance due to the axial anomaly.

Improved AdS/QCD Model with Matter

We study an improved AdS/QCD model at finite temperature and chemical potential. An Ansatz for the beta-function for the boundary theory allows for the derivation of a charged dilatonic black hole in bulk. The solution is asymptotically RN-AdS in the UV and AdS2 * R3 in the IR. We discuss the thermodynamical aspects of the solution. The fermionic susceptibilities are shown to deviate from the free fermionic limits at asymptotic temperatures despite the asymptotically free nature of the gauge coupling at the boundary. The Polyakov line, the temporal and spatial string tensions dependence on both temperature and chemical potential are also discussed.

Jet Quenching via Gravitational Radiation in Thermal AdS

We argue that classical bulk gravitational radiation effects in AdS/CFT, previously ignored because of their subleading nature in the 1/Nc-expansion, are magnified by powers of large Lorentz factors gamma for ultrarelativistic jets, thereby dominating other forms of jet energy loss in holography at finite temperature. We make use of the induced gravitational self-force in thermal AdS5 to estimate its effects. In a thermal medium, relativistic jets may loose most of their energy through longitudinal drag caused by the energy accumulated in their nearby field as they zip through the strongly coupled plasma.

Self-force and synchrotron radiation in odd space-time dimensions

Classical electrodynamics in flat 3+1 space-time has a very special retarded propagator delta(x^2) localized on the light cone, so that a particle does not interact with its past field. However, this is an exception, and in flat odd-dimensional space-times as well as generic curved spaces this is not so. In this work we show that the so called self-force is not only non-zero, but it matches (in 2+1 dimensions) the radiation reaction force derived from the radiation intensity.

Anomalous Chiral Superfluidity

We discuss both the anomalous Cartan currents and the energy-momentum tensor in a left chiral theory with flavour anomalies as an effective theory for flavored chiral phonons in a chiral superfluid with the gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten term. In the mean-field (leading tadpole) approximation the anomalous Cartan currents and the energy momentum tensor take the form of constitutive currents in the chiral superfluid state. The pertinence of higher order corrections and the Adler-Bardeen theorem is briefly noted.

Classical Strongly Coupled QGP: VII. Energy Loss

We use linear response analysis and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem to derive the energy loss of a heavy quark in the SU(2) classical Coulomb plasma in terms of the $l=1$ monopole and non-static structure factor. The result is valid for all Coulomb couplings $Γ=V/K$, the ratio of the mean potential to kinetic energy. We use the Liouville equation in the collisionless limit to assess the SU(2) non-static structure factor. We find the energy loss to be strongly dependent on $Γ$. In the liquid phase with $Γ\approx 4$, the energy loss is mostly metallic and soundless with neither a Cerenkov nor a Mach cone. Our analytical results compare favorably with the SU(2) molecular dynamics simulations at large momentum and for heavy quark masses.

Classical Strongly Coupled QGP: VII. Shear Viscosity and Self Diffusion

We construct the Liouville operator for the SU(2) classical colored Coulomb plasma (cQGP) for arbitrary values of the Coulomb coupling $Γ=V/K$, the ratio of the mean Coulomb to kinetic energy. We show that its resolvent in the classical colored phase space obeys a hierarchy of equations. We use a free streaming approximation to close the hierarchy and derive an integral equation for the time-dependent structure factor. Its reduction by projection yields hydrodynamical equations in the long-wavelength limit. We discuss the character of the hydrodynamical modes at strong coupling. The shear viscosity is shown to exhibit a minimum at $Γ\approx 8$ near the liquid point. This minimum follows from the cross-over between the single particle collisional regime which drops as $1/Γ^{5/2}$ and the hydrodynamical collisional regime which rises as $Γ^{1/2}$. The self-diffusion constant drops as $1/Γ^{3/2}$ irrespective of the regime. We compare our results to molecular dynamics simulations of the SU(2) colored Coulomb plasma. We also discuss the relevance of our results for the quantum and strongly coupled quark gluon plasma (sQGP)

Dense QCD: a Holographic Dyonic Salt

Dense QCD at zero temperature with a large number of colors is a crystal. We show that in the holographic dual description, the crystal is made out of pairs of dyons with $e=g=\pm 1$ charges in a salt-like arrangement. We argue that with increasing density the dyon masses and topological charges equalize, turning the salt-like configuration to a bcc of half-instantons. The latter is dual to a cubic crystal of half-skyrmions. We estimate the transition from an fcc crystal of instantons to a bcc crystal of dyons to about 3 times nuclear matter density with a dyon binding energy of about 180 MeV.

Parton energy loss in a classical strongly coupled QGP

We investigate the energy loss of heavy quarks in the gas, liquid and solid phase of a classical quark-gluon plasma (cQGP) using molecular dynamics simulations. The model consists of massive quarks and gluons interacting as a classical non-relativistic colored Coulomb gas. We show that the electric force decorrelates on a short time scale causing the energy loss to be mostly diffusive and langevin-like in the cQGP. We find that the drag coefficient changes with the heavy quark mass, while the diffusion constant does not. The fractional collisional energy loss is much larger than the leading order estimates from a wQGP because of the core repulsion. Following recent suggestions, we show how the cQGP results can be translated to the sQGP results in the $T=(1-3)T_c$ range.

The Cheshire Cat Principle from Holography

The Cheshire cat principle states that hadronic observables at low energy do not distinguish between hard (quark) or soft (meson) constituents. As a result, the delineation between hard/soft (bag radius) is like the Cheshire cat smile in Alice in wonderland. This principle reemerges from current holographic descriptions of chiral baryons whereby the smile appears in the holographic direction. We illustrate this point for the baryonic form factor.

Thermal photons from heavy ion collisions: A spectral function approach

We analyze the photon rates from a hadronic gas in equilibrium using chiral reduction formulas and a density expansion. The chiral reduction is carried to second order in the pion density which in principal includes all kinetic processes of the type $X\to πγ$ and $X\to ππγ$. The resulting rates are encoded in the form of vacuum correlation functions which are amenable to experiment. The hadronic rates computed in this work along with the known perturbative QGP rates are integrated over the space-time evolution of a hydrodynamic model tuned to hadronic observables. The resulting yields are compared to the recent photon and low mass dilepton measurements at the SPS and RHIC. Predictions for the LHC are made.

We explore further the classical QGP using methods from classical liquids. The partition function of an ensemble of SU(N_c) colored charge spheres is constructed. The pertinent free energies are derived in both limits and compared to recent molecular dynamics results.

By enforcing the Gibbs relations, we derive the pertinent pressure and entropy densities for all Gamma. For the case of an SU(2) classical gluonic plasma our results compare well with lattice simulations. We show that the strongly coupled component of the classical QGP contributes significantly to the bulk thermodynamics across T_c.

Random Levy Matrices Revisited

We compare eigenvalue densities of Wigner random matrices whose elements are independent identically distributed (iid) random numbers with a Levy distribution and maximally random matrices with a rotationally invariant measure exhibiting a power law spectrum given by stable laws of free random variables. We compute the eigenvalue density of Wigner-Levy (WL) matrices using (and correcting) the method by Bouchaud and Cizeau (BC), and of free random Levy (FRL) rotationally invariant matrices by adapting results of free probability calculus. We compare the two types of eigenvalue spectra. Both ensembles are spectrally stable with respect to the matrix addition. The discussed ensemble of FRL matrices is maximally random in the sense that it maximizes Shannon's entropy. We find a perfect agreement between the numerically sampled spectra and the analytical results already for matrices of dimension N=100. The numerical spectra show very weak dependence on the matrix size N as can be noticed by comparing spectra for N=400. After a pertinent rescaling spectra of Wigner-Levy matrices and of symmetric FRL matrices have the same tail behavior. As we discuss towards the end of the paper the correlations of large eigenvalues in the two ensembles are however different. We illustrate the relation between the two types of stability and show that the addition of many randomly rotated Wigner-Levy matrices leads by a matrix central limit theorem to FRL spectra, providing an explicit realization of the maximal randomness principle.

A Gravity Dual of RHIC Collisions

In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence we discuss the gravity dual of a heavy-ion-like collision in a variant of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. We provide a gravity dual picture of the entire process using a model where the scattering process creates initially a holographic shower in bulk AdS. The subsequent gravitational fall leads to a moving black hole that is gravity dual to the expanding and cooling heavy-ion fireball. The front of the fireball cools at the rate of $1/τ$, while the core cools as $1/\sqrtτ$ from a cosmological-like argument. The cooling is faster than Bjorken cooling. The fireball freezes when the dual black hole background is replaced by a confining background through the Hawking-Page transition.

Cold Strongly Coupled Atoms Make a Near-perfect Liquid

Feshbach resonances of trapped ultracold alkali atoms allow to vary the atomic scattering length a. At very large values of a the system enters an universal strongly coupled regime in which its properties--the ground state energy, pressure {\it etc.}--become independent of a. We discuss transport properties of such systems. In particular, the universality arguments imply that the shear viscosity of ultracold Fermi atoms at the Feschbach resonance is proportional to the particle number density n, and the Plank constant \hbar η=\hbar n α_η, where α_ηis a universal constant. Using Heisenberg uncertainty principle and Einstein's relation between diffusion and viscosity we argue that the viscosity has the lower bound given by α_η \leq (6π)^{-1}. We relate the damping of low-frequency density oscillations of ultracold optically trapped ^{6}Li atoms to viscosity and find that the value of the coefficient α_ηis about 0.3. We also show that such a small viscosity can not be explained by kinetic theory based on binary scattering. We conclude that the system of ultracold atoms near the Feshbach resonance is a near-ideal liquid.

Chiral Doubling of Heavy-Light Hadrons: BaBar 2317 MeV and CLEO 2463 MeV Discoveries

We point out that the very recent discoveries of BaBar (2317) and CLEO II (2460) are consistent with the general pattern of spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in hadrons built of heavy and light quarks, as originally suggested by us in 1992, and independently by Bardeen and Hill in 1993. The splitting between the chiral doublers follows from a mixing between the light constituent quark mass and the velocity of the heavy quark, and vanishes for a zero constituent quark mass. The general strictures of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking constrain the axial charges in the chiral multiplet, and yield a mass splitting between the chiral doublers of about 345 MeV when the pion coupling to the doublers is half its coupling to a free quark. The chiral corrections are small. This phenomenon is generic and extends to all heavy-light hadrons. We predict the mass splitting for the chiral doublers of the excited mesons (D1,D2). We suggest that the heavy-light doubling can be used to address issues of chiral symmetry restoration in dense and/or hot hadronic matter. In particular, the relative splitting between D and D* mesons and their chiral partners decreases in matter, with consequences on charmonium evolution at RHIC.

Rethinking the Properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma at $T\sim T_c$

We argue that although at asymptotically high temperatures the QGP in bulk behaves as a gas of weakly interacting quasiparticles (modulo long-range magnetism), at temperatures up to few times the critical temperature $T_c$ it displays different properties. If the running of the QCD coupling constant continues in the Coulomb phase till the screening length scale, it reaches the strong coupling treshold $α_s(m_D)\sim 1$. As a result, the Coulomb phase supports weakly bound Coulombic s-wave $\bar c c$, light quark and even $gg$ states. The existence of shallow bound states dramatically increases the quasiparticle rescattering at low energies, reducing the viscosity and thereby explaining why heavy ion collisions at RHIC exhibit robust collective phenomena. In conformal gauge theories at finite temperature the Coulomb binding persists further in the strong coupling regime, as found for ${\cal N}=4$ SUSY YM in the Maldacena regime.

The Role of Nucleons in Electromagnetic Emission Rates

Electromagnetic emission rates from a thermalized hadronic gas are important for the interpretation of dilepton signals from heavy-ion collisions. Although there is a consensus in the literature about rates for a pure meson gas, qualitative differences appear with a finite baryon density. We show this to be essentially due to the way in which the pi-N background is treated in regards to the nucleon resonances. Using a background constrained by unitarity and broken chiral symmetry, it is emphasized that the thermalized hadronic gas can be considered dilute.

$Ψ'/Ψ$ ratio in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions : a Measure for the Chiral Symmetry Restoration Temperature ?

We argue that a decrease of the chiral scalar meson mass is responsible for re-creation of $Ψ'$ from $J/Ψ$ in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. This causes the charmonium yields to freeze out at temperatures close to the chiral symmetry restoration temperature $T_c$. As a result $Ψ'/Ψ$ may serve as a thermometer for $T_c$ itself. Results in a detailed reaction model support the conjecture. They show good agreement with recent data of NA38 and NA50 for $J/Ψ$ and $Ψ'$ production in S on U and Pb on Pb collisions.

Dilepton and Photon Emission Rates from a Hadronic Gas II

We extend our recent analysis of the dilepton and photon emission rates to the case of finite temperature and baryon density, within the context of a density expansion. To leading order, the effects of the baryon density are assessed using data (photon emission) or constraints from broken chiral symmetry (dilepton emission). Next to leading order effects are worked out, and their contribution qualitatively assessed. The opening of the $πN$ cut causes the photon rate to saturate the empirical photon yield of WA80, but may not be enough to fully account for the excess low mass dileptons seen at CERES.

A MASTER FORMULA FOR CHIRAL SYMMETRY BREAKING

We derive a master formula for chiral $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ breaking, based on the Veltman-Bell equations and the Peierls-Dyson relation. Our approach does not rely on the use of the soft pion limit or an expansion around the chiral limit, and yields exact results for on-shell pions. Threshold theorems for $πN\rightarrow πN$, $γN\rightarrow πN$, $πN\rightarrowππN$, $γN\rightarrow γπN$, $γN\rightarrow ππN$ and $πN\rightarrow πγN$ are recovered, and corrections to them are given. The reactions $π\rightarrow eνγ$, $π\rightarrow eνe^+e^-$, $γπ\rightarrow γπ$ and $γγ\rightarrow ππ$ are also discussed. A general formula for $ππ$ scattering and a new one loop effective action are obtained. The new effective action reproduces the KSFR relation, and yields specific estimates for the pion polarisabilities. A detailed comparison with baryon-free chiral perturbation theory to one loop is made. An extension of our effective action to two loops is outlined.
