Learning to hash with semantic similarity metrics and empirical KL divergence

Learning to hash is an efficient paradigm for exact and approximate nearest neighbor search from massive databases. Binary hash codes are typically extracted from an image by rounding output features from a CNN, which is trained on a supervised binary similar/ dissimilar task. Drawbacks of this approach are: (i) resulting codes do not necessarily capture semantic similarity of the input data (ii) rounding results in information loss, manifesting as decreased retrieval performance and (iii) Using only class-wise similarity as a target can lead to trivial solutions, simply encoding classifier outputs rather than learning more intricate relations, which is not detected by most performance metrics. We overcome (i) via a novel loss function encouraging the relative hash code distances of learned features to match those derived from their targets. We address (ii) via a differentiable estimate of the KL divergence between network outputs and a binary target distribution, resulting in minimal information loss when the features are rounded to binary. Finally, we resolve (iii) by focusing on a hierarchical precision metric. Efficiency of the methods is demonstrated with semantic image retrieval on the CIFAR-100, ImageNet and Conceptual Captions datasets, using similarities inferred from the WordNet label hierarchy or sentence embeddings.

Easy Holography

It is argued that the role of infinite dimensional asymptotic symmetry groups in gravity theories are essential for a holographic description of gravity and possibly to a resolution of the black hole information paradox. I present a simple toy model in two dimensional hyperbolic/ anti-de Sitter (AdS) space and describe, by very elementary considerations, how the asymptotic symmetry group is responsible for the entropy area law. Similar results apply also in three dimensional AdS space. The failure of the approach in higher dimensional AdS spaces is explained and resolved by considering other asymptotically noncompact homogeneous spaces.

Infinite symmetry on the boundary of SL(3)/SO(3)

Asymptotic symmetries of the five dimensional noncompact symmetric space SL(3)/SO(3) are found to form an infinite dimensional Lie algebra, analogously to the asymptotic symmetries of anti-de Sitter spaces in two and three dimensions. Possible exact solvability of the corresponding Chern-Simons theory and the AdS/CFT correspondence to the above mentioned and other noncompact symmetric spaces is discussed.

On generalizations of asymptotically AdS_3 spaces and geometry of SL(N)

In three and two dimensions the asymptotic symmetry groups of $AdS$ spaces are infinite dimensional. This can be explained easily by noting the relations $AdS_3 \simeq SL(2)$ and $AdS_2 \simeq SL(2)/SO(2)$, i.e. that the asymptotic symmetries are in fact that of the Lie group SL(2). As show in the author's previous work, similar infinite dimensional asymptotic symmetry groups can be found in the case of SL(3) and probably also for other noncompact Lie groups and their homogeneous spaces. The purpose of the present work is to revisit the $AdS_3$ space in detail from the Lie group point of view by finding the boundary theory energy-momentum tensor and to prepare to tackle the SL(3) and SL(N) cases.

Kraichnan like model of turbulence with stratification

A generalization to the Kraichnan gaussian, white noise in time model of turbulent velocity field is proposed. The generalization is designed to take into account the effects of stratification in the atmospheric boundary layer by introducing different scaling exponents for horizontal and vertical velocity components, leading to strong vertical anisotropy. The inevitable compressibility of the model leads one to take into account also the density statistics of the fluid, which will immediately lead to a boundary layer like structure in the flow statistics and non zero time correlations. Possible applications for passive scalar, tracer and inertial particle statistics and their anomalous scaling behavior will be discussed.

Steady state existence of passive vector fields under the Kraichnan model

The steady state existence problem for Kraichnan advected passive vector models is considered for isotropic and anisotropic initial values in arbitrary dimension. The model includes the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations, linear pressure model (LPM) and linearized Navier-Stokes (LNS) equations. In addition to reproducing the previously known results for the MHD and linear pressure model, we obtain the values of the Kraichnan model roughness parameter $ξ$ for which the LNS steady state exists.
