Reaching the equilibrium state of frustrated triangular Ising magnet Ca3Co2O6

Ca3Co2O6 is a frustrated magnet consisting of a triangular arrangement of chains of Ising spins. It shows regular magnetization steps vs magnetic field every 1.2 T that are metastable with very slow dynamics. This has puzzled the community for many years and given rise to numerous potential theories. Here we approach the problem by seeking the elusive magnetic equilibrium state at T = 2 K. To this end, we explore two approaches: (1) bypassing the slow dynamics produced by changing fields by instead field-cooling directly to the target temperature, and (2) quantum annealing in transverse magnetic fields. While we observe no measurable effect of the quantum annealing in fields up to 7 T, which is likely due to the large Ising anisotropy of Co spins in this material, we find that for the field cooling in longitudinal fields we achieve the predicted equilibrium 1/3 magnetization. We perform Monte Carlo simulations of the ground state phase diagram and we also simulate the quantum annealing process and find good agreement between experiment and theory. Thus we present an investigation of the elusive ground state properties of the canonical frustrated triangular system Ca3Co2O6.

Magnetic nano-fluctuations in a frustrated magnet

Frustrated systems exhibit remarkable properties due to the high degeneracy of their ground states. Stabilised by competing interactions, a rich diversity of typically nanometre-sized phase structures appear in polymer and colloidal systems, while the surface of ice pre-melts due to geometrically frustrated interactions. Atomic spin systems where magnetic interactions are frustrated by lattice geometry provide a fruitful source of emergent phenomena, such as fractionalised excitations analogous to magnetic monopoles. The degeneracy inherent in frustrated systems may prevail all the way down to absolute zero temperature, or it may be lifted by small perturbations or entropic effects. In the geometrically frustrated Ising--like magnet Ca3Co2O6, we follow the temporal and spatial evolution of nanoscale magnetic fluctuations firmly embedded inside the spin--density--wave magnetic structure. These fluctuations are a signature of a competing ferrimagnetic phase with an incommensurability that is different from, but determined by the host. As the temperature is lowered, the fluctuations slow down into a super-paramagnetic regime of stable spatiotemporal nano-structures.

Terahertz spectroscopy of spin waves in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ in high magnetic fields

We have studied the magnetic field dependence of far-infrared active magnetic modes in a single ferroelectric domain \BFO/ crystal at low temperature. The modes soften close to the critical field of 18.8\,T along the [001] (pseudocubic) axis, where the cycloidal structure changes to the homogeneous canted antiferromagnetic state and a new strong mode with linear field dependence appears that persists at least up to 31\,T. A microscopic model that includes two \DM/ interactions and easy-axis anisotropy describes closely both the zero-field spectroscopic modes as well as their splitting and evolution in a magnetic field. The good agreement of theory with experiment suggests that the proposed model provides the foundation for future technological applications of this multiferroic material.

Long wavelength magnetic and magnetoelectric excitations in the ferroelectric antiferromagnet BiFeO3

We present a terahertz spectroscopic study of magnetic excitations in ferroelectric antiferromagnet BiFeO3. We interpret the observed spectrum of long-wavelength magnetic resonance modes in terms of the normal modes of the material's cycloidal antiferromagnetic structure. We find that the modulated Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction leads to a splitting of the out-of-plane resonance modes. We also assign one of the observed absorption lines to an electromagnon excitation that results from the magnetoelectric coupling between the ferroelectric polarization and the cycloidal magnetic structure of BiFeO3.
